I think he was someone who didn't think he was a good presenter, but I actually think he worked his way up to being one of the best. Now that Carfection has Henry Catchpole, I think Alex felt he should step away from in front of the camera. But I hope he comes back!

I had an early 1.6 and the ex mother in law would testify to the firmness of the shocks 😀! The engine seized/ my ex was driving?? Got a 1.8 out of an A reg and yes it was smashing 🤣. I've had mk 2's and they were a proper all rounder and still massive smiles ☺️
I have 2 of these here in southafrica,one heavily modified and one stock standard,they are still common over here and parts are extremely cheap.I like my original one more,best car ever made in my opinion and super reliable....
It was simply genius, for the asking price you got a lot of car. The thing that sticks out for me is how quick it was, the throttle was very responsive with just a little pedal pressure.
I have owned 4 different marques of golf gti. And my opinion is different to that of the guy in his previous videos. I still prefer the mk4 currently driving a mk5 daily driver and having a project car 1.8t mk4 AGU with a ko4 turbo, gutted interior running about 280bhp at the wheels.
My biggest concern was the price of the mark 1. Correcting for inflation, this car cost over £30K. It cost 50% more than other Golfs at the time. Yes it was 100% better but it was not the budget giant slayer that folklore suggests. It became an aspirational yuppie toy. Today’s GTIs are criticised for being expensive but they were better built and cheaper than the mark 1. Of course the mark 1 was relatively speaking fabulous because so many cars in the mid to late 70s were dreadful. Interestingly the other amazing car, the 240Z was very little more.

An old friend of mine had one of these nicely tuned. Quick, noisy, great handling, and a ton of fun. It ate fuses like popcorn, though.
