@@YourVetOnline “Funny” story real quick. We adopted a GSD/Great Pyrenees mix out of a hoarding rescue in Virginia, with a 1-year deadline for neutering. Very informative! I have a Beagle puppy, she's 6 months old now. I considered she to be spayed before her first heat, because i'm not a breeder and i don't have any intentions to breed her. I already talked to my vet but he suggested to be spayed at least 1 year old. After i'm watching this and i think i know what his reason. I really don't want my baby prone to hypotiroidism, obesity or any joint problems in the future. Thank you so much! 🤗
Thank you so very much for the informative video! Really helpful. What about mixed breed dogs? Could you please advise me? I have a 15 month, 35kilos (around 77lb) male rescue dog. He is white/black color, a big but not huge dog, mix of Gekas (Greek Harehound hunting dog) and Greek Sheperd and maybe more breeds. I am considering having him neutered next week (he started having issues with other male intact dogs and now I cannot have him off leash) Would that be ok or you are suggesting waiting? Thank you very much in advance!

Do you think my female lab will be ok if I spay her right before her first birthday? I have a contract with my breeder to desex her before a year so I literally have her spaying about week before her birthday to give her as much time as I could to let her grow.
I just had my 11month Cane Corso neutered. I have had Rotties, Mastiffs & have never seen them this uncomfortable after. The vet said on the day, it maybe best to wait until he is 18months however, I felt it necessary as he would constantly try humping my elderly rescue girl staff & if I stopped him he would grab my clothes & family clothing & this would be non stop for hours on end. After seeing him now after the procedure I feel so bad, as he keeps whining. 😢 All the large male dogs I’ve had they were never this frustrated and persistant like this. They also were neutered early but it didn’t effect their growth. How likely is it to effect his growth please & will it make him more aggressive as I was told by the nurse he may get aggressive. Thank you.
Firstly, please ask your vet for more pain medications such as NSAIDs, or contact our vet team for a consult and we can advise vip.yourvetonline.com/ask-a-vet-a-question 2. I think he will likely be just fine growth wise. It's impossible to predict and you did the right thing. As for the comment made by the vet nurse, aggression is also unlikely. Make sure you practice socialisation skills and obedience like sit, stay, come, on your mat. I'm sure he will be fine. All the best.

Yes I'm not sure why Brachy's weren't included 🤷♀️ As far as Boas surgery it's impossible to tell 100% what is required until the dog is anaesthetised. Make sure you choose a vet who has plenty of experience performing these surgeries as they will know exactly what to look for. Did you see our video that discusses Boas? I have a 6 month Afghan hound puppy. He's very large. When is the best time to (N) fix him? I'm not a breeder and I have no intention on breeding him. These dogs are very very costly. His disposition is amazing. He's such a gentle puppy.
Sure don't spay or neuter - and if you do, do it later after growth plates close. One problem is that if you're ever in the market for a rescue dog, most rescue groups won't adopt out to you if your current dog(s) aren't already desexed! RIDICULOUS
When should I neuter my 14-week golden retriever, I’m a first-time dog owner as well. I just want to make a decision that is best for him? Anyone advice is appreciated!
You don’t need to spay or neuter your dogs! Be responsible with your pets. This was only recommended because people are irresponsible with their pets to help control population. Just be responsible people! You will keep your pets living longer by not spaying or neutering your pets.
Hi Kay Not at all. The only caveat to this is vets will need to assess health - take bloods etc to check organ function like kidney/liver. Sometimes we pick up other issues that might require treatment prior to surgery or we might need to change the type of anaesthetic.
Wow, I thought desexing is 6mo to 1 regardless of breed. Looks like i have to wait til my german shepherd is at least 2 years of age. How should I tell this to my vet?
Fantastic video, thank you for compiling and summarizing the information from the study!! Now to my question, I have a 7 month old male Australian Koolie(close to 40 lbs), I was planning to neuter him within this next month. Would it be safe to proceed with neutering or should I give him a few more months? Thank you soooo much
Discuss with your vet. Here in Australia we have the same requirements, however a vet can write a letter for you to give to the council advising that it is not in your dog's best interest to desex until 'x' date. I would discuss with your vet and council whether this is possible. Goodluck!

There is no specific research so I would weigh up risk of mammary cancer vs musculoskeletal development issues. If you feel that you can monitor her mammary glands for life then choose desexing around one year. If not, spay before puberty at about 7-8 mths.
What percentage of your veterinarian practice’s revenue come from spaying and neutering animals? I am going to guess a lot. You assume for population control that every pet owner is irresponsible. From meeting 5 vets in 3 practices in 2 states to discuss various health issues of a large breed puppy each brought up that they could neuter my puppy before 6 months, when there were more pressing issues at hand. Does your professional association push neutering at all cost? YOU ALL SOUND LIKE BAD USED CAR SALESPEOPLE. Yes population control of animals is important.
This is an interesting comment that I'm delighted to be able to answer. Yes, many small animal veterinarians perform a large number of spays and neuters, however, it is incredibly rare for them to charge a true market rate for this service. In fact, desexing surgeries are performed at cost or very close to and in many cases below in an attempt to reduce the barrier of price. As you stated population control is very important, and without subsidising the cost of this surgery, many pet owners would be unable to have their pet desexed resulting in the consequences mentioned in the video. We are an online telemedicine service, so no income is derived from performing surgery. As for your point regarding the timing of spey/neuter for large breed dogs - this is relatively new research and it's quite possible that some vets have not yet heard about it. I'm glad you found our video and hope that it proved helpful.
@@YourVetOnline vet should be careful as to how they come across, they lose credibility when they just bring the subject when your focus should be on the topic at hand.
The risks assessed in this study didn't increase in prevalence with early desexing. However, in retrospective studies looking at risk of IVDD there was a greater risk if neutered before 1 year of age.
Hi Karlo Absolutely it is fine. If you have a female this will prevent pyometra, and if a male - prostate problems. Go for it! There are many more positives. 👍
Thanks a lot for this video, I’m a first time pup parent, she is a mutt - 32% chihuahua, 22% poodle, 9% shi Tzu, 7% cocker spaniel, 9% Dacshund, 8% Mimi pin, 6% bichon frise, rest 7% super mutt (whatever that mean). In this situation, to determine if she be spayed at 6 months age or later do we go by her main breeds such as chihuahua or poodle or adjust the timing given that she also has some the higher risk breeds shi tzu or Cocker spaniel ?
You have to really do your research because there are pros and cons to both spay and neutering and pros and cons do not spaying or neutering not Spaiying a female can cause your dog is life there are certain types of testicular cancer your dog cannot get if it does not have testicles on the other hand they do need to be two or three years old so that they're fully grown because they're still developing and growing Andrew spay and neuter before then would be like giving your child a hysterectomy when it was merely an infant or toddler
Please consider hormone sparing sterilization! Look how reducing hormones in humans can utterly mess people up physically and mentally :/ Dogs are not humans, but also dogs mental health isn't nearly as studied as humans, and hormones can play a huge rule in mental health and feeling good.
@@YourVetOnline there is thou... Can easily find it googling, and can also find others including vets here on TH-cam talking about it. Behavior and physical. And then there is just considering sex. There is evidence that dogs do enjoy sex, it's a big drive, removing the hormones removed the drive ... Removing a big way our pets experience pleasure... That's really messed up. I get that you've done this to likely thousand of animals thinking you're doing it for the best, and trying to consider that maybe something you've done is actually harmful in some way is a huge mental shift to do and so you dismiss anyone saying otherwise, dismiss the evidence for it, but ...evidence is there if you look and open your mind to maybe being wrong and maybe having promoted something harmful. Talk to vets that are making the switch perhaps.
@@hefoxed this whole video discusses the evidence around desex timing regarding some physical and disease attributes. As far as behaviour goes...the evidence is slim. But is related to timing of fear response. Not pleasure. Anthropomorphism is not helpful.
@@YourVetOnline Underestimating the complexity of animals is not useful either. This is what contributed to horrid fishing practices due to people thinking fish didn't feel pain because the have different systems than us. Looking to science is important, but our soceity and science has biased -- and biased contributes to bad conclusions. They just found out snakes have clits -- not because it was hard to find, but because scientists just figured they didn't and assumed that sex is just a biological need and not pleasure driven/encouraged. As a trans person, I know what's it like as a human to have wrong hormones, low hormones, and good hormone levels. Some of the "side effects" shown from neutering corresponds to having incorrect hormones, which we know is an issue in humans because humans can talk, but dogs and cats cannot. There are things animals cannot be asked, cannot be said about the effect of removing their hormones and reducing their sexual behaviour -- the understanding around hormones on other systems and health factors is still being figured out in humans and that has been heavily studied for 100ish years iirc -- can you honestly say that the studies on animals has been done in a way to really explore this well, to really determine both the physical and mental health of de-sexing animals? It seems more the focus is on how it's advantages to owners over the animals. Please look into vets that are making the switch and their reasoning. You're not going to listen to me. Also, consider the perspective of folk in places like Norway where neutering is banned due outside of medically necessity for its cruelty.
@@seretx3 That would never happen. Most folks have one or two dogs. If you watch them, nothing will happen. Get educated on the cons of removing a vital organ for no reason.
@@seretx3 Ok. Remove the radiator from your car. Yeah, it'll keep running.. but see what happens to the car in the long run. Don't know why this is even a debate.
@@drewhour ok so what about the dogs that eg have only one ball where it belongs and the other one is somewhere in the belly rotting? That's why it's up for debate. I agree that it's way healthier for dogs to not be neutered but there are so many stray dogs that keep reproducing and a lot of dogs also end up in the shelters which have no choice but to kill dogs in the regular because there are too many for them to handle.

Make sure you choose a vet who has plenty of experience performing these surgeries as they will know exactly what to look for.
Did you see our video that discusses Boas? Here is a link: th-cam.com/video/F_X95hIZxxY/w-d-xo.html
We didn't discuss LATE surgery but that is also an option.

What age should a male shihtzu puppy be spayed/neutered.
Interested in an answer to this also.
Can my dog go in heat after being spayed
I have a 6 month Afghan hound puppy. He's very large. When is the best time to (N) fix him? I'm not a breeder and I have no intention on breeding him. These dogs are very very costly. His disposition is amazing. He's such a gentle puppy.
Sure don't spay or neuter - and if you do, do it later after growth plates close. One problem is that if you're ever in the market for a rescue dog, most rescue groups won't adopt out to you if your current dog(s) aren't already desexed! RIDICULOUS
You don't need to worry about growth plates...that's a myth. Take a listen to the full video and check out the study it's based on.
Do you have information specific to female dachshunds?
When should I neuter my 14-week golden retriever, I’m a first-time dog owner as well. I just want to make a decision that is best for him? Anyone advice is appreciated!
Wait until at least age one.
You don’t need to spay or neuter your dogs! Be responsible with your pets. This was only recommended because people are irresponsible with their pets to help control population. Just be responsible people! You will keep your pets living longer by not spaying or neutering your pets.
Just had my miniature poodle/bichon neutered yesterday. He is 17 months.
Sounds great. Happy NY!
What about male huskies? Mine is a year and 6 months.
Is it bad to spay dogs that are much older?
Hi Kay
Not at all.
Yes can you please help me, what about a 10 month old yorkie female
She can be spayed any time from now.
What about dachshunds and their backs?
What about miniature poodle? Thanks
Fantastic video, thank you for compiling and summarizing the information from the study!!
Now to my question, I have a 7 month old male Australian Koolie(close to 40 lbs), I was planning to neuter him within this next month. Would it be safe to proceed with neutering or should I give him a few more months? Thank you soooo much
A koolie is very similar to a collie so we recommend being guided by the recommendations for that breed.
Didn't know it was bri'eish, exiting
Not sure what you mean?
LA County’s law says 4 months. I have a Very large Cane Corso pups.
Discuss with your vet. Here in Australia we have the same requirements, however a vet can write a letter for you to give to the council advising that it is not in your dog's best interest to desex until 'x' date.
I would discuss with your vet and council whether this is possible. Goodluck!
Thinking about Neutering my male beagle at 6months. Any tips?
I would not recommend fixing a dog at 6 months, wait till one year or two for smaller dogs like yours
My dog is almost 2 years old male can I get him neutered?
Ok, I've waited. Jack is 7 months old. He is driving my female spayed 10 yr old crazy since yesterday. I'm thinking he close 🤔 so I'm getting ready to see what I've got to do. He is cattle dog.
No harm in getting both the dogs desexed.
How about the Bichon?
What about the male shitzu ?
This breed wasn't included in the study, but from experience, around 6 months should be fine.
i have a male German shepherd mixed Pitbull puppy who is 8 months today who weighs around 54 pounds. I am not planning on mating him but i am scared of neutering to due to the health complications he can get later on in his life or it effecting his energy. i would greatly appreciate some help
when would you recommend spaying a malshi? my girl malshi puppy is 6 months 2 weeks right now, she weighs 3kg i’m unsure if i should spay her before her first season or after
Spaying her now will be just fine. Before her first heat.
What about labradoodles and golden doodles ?
Hi Gina
For these mixes we recommend that you take guidance from the Labrador or Golden part of the mix.
How about a Pomsky, when should they be neutered?
Cool 👍❤️
I have a puppy and he's in for his injections and microchip 2moro and i asked about neutering as he's a presa canario and want him calm/stable and sensible and my vet said they dont promote neutering anymore as the cons outweigh the pros and to only have it if its necessary! I really want him to keep his conkers, im a man myself and cant bring myself to do it to him. Any advice please vet lady wud be welcome as im confused now lol.....✌💙🇬🇧
What about female english bull terrier?
There isn't much data on them. But they would likely be fine from 8 to 12 mths.
@@YourVetOnline Thanks. Mine is 1 year and 3 months old. I plan to spay in october, at age 1 yr 5 months.
5 months female lebradog..can I spray her before her 1st heat
Not sure what a lebradog is. If you mean Labrador please check the link to the blog post in the video description, it explains more.
Thanks for your information. How about a female husky ?
There is no specific research so I would weigh up risk of mammary cancer vs musculoskeletal development issues. If you feel that you can monitor her mammary glands for life then choose desexing around one year. If not, spay before puberty at about 7-8 mths.
@@YourVetOnline thanks ! Dr Leigh
Can you please clarify your statement.
@@YourVetOnline from numerous vet I have interacted with they come across with a single focus to push people to neuter their dog. Period.
What about female dachshunds?
The risks assessed in this study didn't increase in prevalence with early desexing.
However, in retrospective studies looking at risk of IVDD there was a greater risk if neutered before 1 year of age.
How about you just leave them alone
is it ok to have a 5 yr old neutered?
Hi Karlo
Absolutely it is fine.
If you have a female this will prevent pyometra, and if a male - prostate problems.
Go for it! There are many more positives. 👍
@@YourVetOnline thank you!
It's a bit of a guessing game with mixed breeds. For her, I'd be okay with spaying around 6months of age.
Can i neuter 3 yrs old small breed dog
Absolutely you can.
Thanks love u all
My boy is a pomchi
Please consider hormone sparing sterilization! Look how reducing hormones in humans can utterly mess people up physically and mentally :/ Dogs are not humans, but also dogs mental health isn't nearly as studied as humans, and hormones can play a huge rule in mental health and feeling good.
There is very little evidence to suggest that this is relevant in dogs or cats.

@@drewhour ok so what about the dogs that eg have only one ball where it belongs and the other one is somewhere in the belly rotting? That's why it's up for debate.
