Neurtering doesn’t change behavior like many people think. I used to think this too, but now I realize that’s not always the case. They will still mark and hump regardless. It’s mainly a behavior issue that can be fixed through training.
It does change behaviour, although not all undesired behaviours. I run a dog boarding business. I see it all the time. The difference is like night and day.
I studied in canada in the early 90 and also „ grew up „ with 6 mnth spay/ neuter. Here in switzerland we leave a lot mire animals inract . In males we have the option of implanting the gnrh agonist ( suprelorin chip - 6 or 12 mnth). This gives us a 3 rd option . It’s not clear ( as far as I know) how much less LH you have circulating compared to the 20 fold increase with neutering but it is self limiting at least. I chipped my 1 yr old with the 6 mnth since my 9 yr old female was in heat but am thinking of eventually vasectomizing him - and yes we were never taught vasectomy in vet school.
Great information in helping to make the best decision for the best interest of a dog and its owner. Solution in finding a good force free trainer and a vet trained in the less negatively impacting vasectomy versus neuter is not easy but it is a worthy pursuit.

I’m in Raleigh, NC where NCSU Veterinary School is located. I’m about to decide upon my 2nd dog after losing my 12 yo GSP (Paisley )6 months ago. I’m searching for an integrative or at least more holistic Veterinarian in the Raleigh area. I definitely want to wait on spaying my next female and preferably have a BTL., IF I do choose to do anything at all. Do you have ANY recommendations for seeking out such a practice? I really enjoy your videocasts and want to do the best for my next female canine!
In our area there is a rescue group that has laser neutering done to all of their dogs. At sometime, could you please address what the procedure actually is, and how safe is it for the dogs health? Thank you!
dr judy i have a boy and girl 1 in half month old what happens if they by accident mate since they bro and sis born same day same dad and mom just curious cause this topic is giving me stress and i am not sure how to prevent like i am so clueless atm and confuse i am not willing to castrate my dog and i am not sure what else i can do to prevent him from not taking his sis wow i sound stupid asking this zzzzzzzzzzzz its my first tme having a boy and a girl i have always raise girls and i dont nutter them but i need advice cause i am lost
Hello. I don't want to neuter my one year old shihtzu but he does have agression at times .. is there anything I can do for this ? My biggest concern is at the groomers he did try to snap at her once .
My dog has an enlarged prostate, and the vet says he has struvuite crystals in his urine. He's in tact. The vet is recommending to get him neutered because it could lead to cancers. What would be true and recommended? Thank you Dr. Judy.
i have such regret fixing my 2 dogs my male got a bout of colitis 1 year after neuter , he has had IBD on and of all his 11 years . and at age 10 Cancer . My Female went from spunky firecracker to a lazy little fart . she has battled constipation all her life even on a high moisture fresh diet ...a spoon full prepared Paradigm is the only thing that keeps her regular .
My new German Shepherd puppy only dropped one testicle. My vet wants to remove his testcles at 6 months. I've never had one of my animals fixed I'm nervous
I'm having a problem with my dog who has never been neutered. I live in an apt There is a female in heat. He wants to go out constantly. And he has none or very little interest in eating. What can I do? It's driving me crazy!
I had the same issue once. Idk where you live but in Germany we have something called a chip that gets put in and either lasts for 6 or 12 months. It's non invasive and gets put in like a microchip in the back of the neck. Maybe you should look into that? I live in an area with a ton of intact female dogs. My boy is getting castrated on Friday and I'm worried because he had that chip in once for 6 months and he turned into a lazy fart that didn't want to walk outside at all and only carried and I'm worried it'll also happen but permanently to my boy so I'm extremely indecisive if I should call off the appointment or let it happen
