    I think this is pretty well done for a budget friendly improvement.
    A few tips that may help next time....when working with bondo on wood or metal, layering is important as you said.
    To make this even better 1. Only mix just enough to allow you to work with it before it begins to harden and 2. try making each layer as smooth and flat as possible BEFORE it begins to dry. It’s VERY difficult to smooth out bondo once it dries if it has big craters and drips. Since the goal is a perfectly smooth finish it makes sense to do that with each layer along the way so the final ones are easier to perfect. 3. Use a larger putty knife so you can smooth a bigger portion at once. Try to spread/smooth it with as few strokes as possible because it gets increasingly difficult to work with as it dries. 4. As someone else mentioned gradual sanding from 80-220 is very helpful. Have to get the rough stuff first then smooth gradually. If you do a good enough job of spreading/smoothing while it’s wet you may be able to skip the 80 and go right for 150, then 220. This smoothing tip can save hours potentially.
    When applying primer/paint... if you cannot do it in a garage consider making a spray booth with a plastic tarp to limit dust and dirt getting on the finish. Clean the driveway and then put plastic on the ground and make a little tent out of it.
    Follow recoat times on can and don’t cheat or it can be a big time waster to correct. Multiple light smooth coats.
    Also very important to sand between primer coats for a really smooth finish. Can use 600 grit or so and spray some water on it between strokes. After it must be thoroughly cleaned after sanding. A microfiber cloth with a little denatured alcohol is a good option to get contaminants off.
    $.02!
    Thanks for sharing.

    Bondo is not meant for structural repairs, you need to reinforce and fill the hole in the door with metal, also the gouge was quite deep there are some glass fiber fillers that work better for filling in deeper gouges, a cheese grater is used to knock down the filler quickly save you some time on that , but I will say, I applaud your attempt.

    • @asama1984

    • @asama1984
      @asama1984  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just a thought. Would a cheese grater be too rough on the surface? considering the bondo is still soft and not fully hardened. If you're putting too much pressure it might cause some splitting.

    Hey Asama, cool video and an interesting project. I am like yourself, a 'have a goer' but I did have some professional body repair experience many many years ago ! I think you did a great job considering you did not have a pro workshop and tools etc. The art in body repair is getting the filler to follow all the curves and lines in a car - not an easy task and it takes time and a lot of experience to learn these skills. Then the paint is a whole different story. You can get spray paint in cans colour matched exactly from Motor Factors who have the paint matching software and a mixing machine - that's a real bonus and helps a lot. The lacquer coat is difficult as you pointed out. If you are spraying from a can in open-air then you have temperature, humidity and bugs to contend with. Not easy. But you did a good job and I am sure your customer was pleased that their car looked a lot better ! Nice work.
