Kirk has never made a bad album with whatever lineup he chooses to record with, just some that are better than others. Literally a Top 10 band of all time for me.
Dude speaking of great singers - I just saw Green Lung in Columbus Ohio last Friday - for their first US tour. The lead singers voice is awesome, not to mention freak backing vocals and keys. Great band!
NOLA and When the kite string pops two of my favorite records…Sewn Mouth Secrets…Soilent Green would be in all time southern sludge albums…that Windhand album is absolutely brilliant there is magic in those songs for sure. Inter Arma to me are a flawless band they are monolithic and one of the best live bands they rattle my cage in the best possible way…heady brutal psyched out and you never know what’s coming next , massively underrated
I had a long drive ahead of me, I listened to this episode them chose the Kylesa album to listen to based on this recommendation and it was awesome. Thank you. Also listened to the Spectral Wound album based on the emailer and liked that too. I remember getting the Matando Gueros album by Brujeria around the time I got out of college, mostly because I heard Faith No More was involved somehow, honestly the cover freaked me out and the music kind of scared me even as a 22 year old. I need to go back and give them another chance.
Your right on the money with saying eternal return is at least spiritually a grunge album. Both guitarist cite smashing pumpkins as big influences on their playing and it shows.
6:08 Sludge is the metal genre equivalent of that one junk drawer that everyone's got in their house. A little bit of everything goes in there, and there may or may not be any real criteria for what does and doesn't belong in there, but if it's in there, it goes in there.
The only time I've ever been to Texas, during a holiday to the US in 2018, I came across that third Deadbird LP in Waterloo Records in Austin. Very glad I bought it.
I remember seeing the Crowbar video to 'All I Had (I Gave)' on M-TV back in 1993, and I immediately went out and bought their self titled album, and I have loved it ever since. Objectively Crowbar perhaps has made even better albums since (not a weak album in their entire discography), but for nostalgic reasons, the self titled album will always be my favorite Crowbar release. The track 'Existence Is Punishment' in particular is one of the most heartfelt and moving metal songs ever made; a testament to the inimitable songwriting skill of the great Mr. Windstein.. 👌👌
I remember making my poor Mum get me that debut Brujeria album (with the censored cover) for Christmas. What with it being requested along with a GG Allin album, it was an anxious ol' Yule for her.
Hey, just out of curiosity, is there any story behind that camel/metallica poster behind you. I mean is it the “Camel” I’m thinking or is it something else!
I lean heavily toward the orthodox definitions of sludge, but not gonna quibble with what is still a great list. Definitely agree with the EHG, Crowbar, Weedeater, and Down picks being their best albums. Not sure where they were from, but Mugwart and Rue sure had that southern sludge sound, and were pretty rad bands. Would love to see a "best of" orthodox sludge list - EHG, Noothgrush, Grief, Iron Monkey kinda template!
Since you mentioned overseas for church of misery , a favorite sludge band i love is Demonic Death Judge especially seaweed, it reminds me of Southern sludge for sure from Norway
I got the Bandcamp notification of yr project to be released Nov 1! Since your name is not to be found anywhere on it, I'll wait to see if you're ready to talk about it before I share anything else. I eventually get fatigued with sludge, so I'm not a huge expert, but I agree all your picks are great. The ones that made my overall list regardless of geographic region are Acid Bath, Deadbird, U.S. Christmas and Inter Arma. I'd add Floor even though when they morphed into Torche, they weren't quite metal, hence the sludge pop term. As far as originators, I'd say Black Flag's My War (1984) and Melvins 10 Songs EP (1986) had important elements, though they of course touched many styles. I consider Windhand the best band that followed the Electric Wizard template. Italy's Ufomammut is perhaps my overall favorite, leaning into the cosmic doom sludge, recommended to anyone who likes U.S. Christmas.
Crowbar's early stuff to me is mix tape stuff, because songs like Planets Collide, The Lasting Dose, To Build a Mountain, Odd Fellows Rest are just top tier, but then some of the other songs don't really hit for me. But some of their newer albums Like Sever The Wicked hand for example hold together as album's better. I don't know if that makes sense. But I feel that way about early Sabbath too. Other than Master Of Reality, I tend to listen to them in mixes rather than play a whole album. Maybe I'm weird. But as for your picks I think they are solid. But I'd say that the second Down album is more adventurous than the first one so I'd probably put that one over Nola or they are tied for me. I remember having Nola on cassette that album got worn so bad that I had to get it on CD a few months later. Acid Bath is a great pick too. I hope people check that one out. Windhand is a solid pick too. Soma is my go to for them. Honestly I think I have heard 90% of the albums you mentioned. I'll give Rwake a listen and that other band you mentioned from AK too. Thank you !
Curious if you've listened to Sunrise Patriot Motion - Black Fellflower Stream and thoughts if so. Very much dissimilar in genre to Windhand but has that mesmeric quality.
I saw an interview with Mustaine where he talks about eating a small bag of plain lays potato chips- supposedly the oils in it coat your throat. I just sniff glue myself.
@@BornTooNate Yeah def some black metal in their sound. That's too band, I think they are one of the best American bands doing Black /doom/sludge, whatever in some time. worth it to revisit!
Superjoint ritual are definitely on the top shelf of southern sludge. The first two albums are just undeniable. The third album is ok but those first two are perfect. I think the circumstances at the time of that band are unfortunate since it’s the band Phil quit pantera to be in but all that aside the music is amazing. You could even call them a supergroup. Supergroup ritual even
Dig that first one and aspects of the 2nd. Sorta defies classification, I always looked at em as black flag worship through an extreme metal lens. But yea that first record in particular SLAMS

Agree 100% ya boi is god tier

Did you see Castle Rat ?
Yeah man they were great, bought the record, CD, a shirt and sticker. Totally sweet stage show.

Sewn Mouth Secrets rules! That one would be hard to justify as sludge, but not impossible. Definitely an all time great heavy record

Talking about bands with an air of mystery and blanketed in myth, two quite different ones spring to mind - Sun City Girls and Deathspell Omega.
BTW the No Quarter cover by Crowbar is amazing. Ditto the Dreamweaver cover.
NO KAH WUARTAAAH

I think a great mention though they’re not from the south or the US is Iron Monkey.
Band rules
Yes. Watch that Garza pod interview! It’s very good.
Dude is an excellent podcaster

@@BornTooNate 'Odd Fellow's Rest' is also up there for me..

Great list, I always thought that Windhand album had grunge vibes, especially First To Die is like a Doom version of AIC
That song ruuuuuuuules!
@@BornTooNate Hell yeah it does, def my fave on there

What about Cobalt? I know they are not really southern, but definitely great Sludge! Eater of Birds, gin and slow forever are all amazing!
Never liked that band. Always thought they were considered black metal? Either way, not my thing

Crazy Brujeria story. Didn't Type O also have a weird marketing thing? Like they were from Iceland or something.
VINLAND
Give me that worst interview! :D
Maybe. I might have deleted it? I’ll check
