You gotta check out Young & Wasted from this same concert. Originally a Gene song from the album Lick It Up, Eric Carr (the drummer) actually sings lead vocals. Super rad! And War Machine is from the Creatures of the Night album.
"Under The Gun" is from the 1984 album, Animalize, and "War Machine" is from 1982's Creatures Of The Night, an album with perhaps the most awesome sounding drums I have ever heard! The video is from their Animalize tour date in Detroit, Michigan on December 8, 1984. It aired live on MTV as well. Besides Paul & Gene, the band at this time featured Eric Carr on drums, and Bruce Kulick on lead guitar.
Under the Gun: From Animalize (1984), War Machine from Creatures of the Night (1982). KISS dropped the makeup in 1983 when releasing the album Lick It Up. The line up here is Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Eric Carr and Bruce Kulick (lasted until 1991 when Eric sadly passed away).
Before cell phones, internet and the band concealed their faces and no one, no media new what they looked like, they would walk through the crowd before shows and I was young and to me they were like superheroes. The makeup off was a tough time to get respect as a kiss fan. Creatures of the night was 1981 and heavy then soon no make up lick it up was faster and the strongest vocals on a kiss record ….i think the voices to a new level then animalize was where Gene kind of walked away with Hollywood acting and Paul pretty much did everything, they ultimately took the same path they did in the 70s by trying to reach more people with more pop style songs as we got close to the 90s. I love all phases and lineups. Kiss fan for life!!!
dude!!!!!!! this concert kicks so much ass!!! they still had something to prove here, they were tryn to revive there careers here, i bought this back in 85 0r 86 on vhs... and i still have that vhs tape!! lol.... the band was bruce kulick, paul stanley, gene simmons and the late great eric carr...
This is one of the tightest Kiss line-ups ever. One of things that made Kiss so mysterious back in the 70s was that nobody knew who they were. You could be in the grocery store and Gene could be next to you and you'd never know it. The masquerade was incredible. Kiss in makeup is like no other band. It's almost as though you're seeing 7 foot tall monsters/super heroes come to life. Every other band looks like mere mortals by comparison. This is late eighties stuff with Eric Carr on drums. Still amazing musically.
Eric Carr was on the drums. War Machine came from Creatures of the Night (the last make-up album before the reunion). The Rio 1983 show has some awesome moments.
As someone who loves the original lineup the most, It has to be said that every era of Kiss is amazing in its own way. Their staying power is something to be admired. Sometimes you have certain fans that like to fight over certain eras but I say just enjoy them all, they all have something to offer and they always bring it. And as someone in their 20's, im so grateful that Kiss was around for so long to give people like me the chance to experience them live, whicn was easily the greatest gig ive ever been to.
@@poeslanding When this video came out I watched it religiously for about 3 years, I still have my VHS copy of this concert. I always felt that this show should have been touted as KISS ALIVE III.
I was at this actual concert had a camera about 6 rows behind me . This was at Cobo Hall In Detroit late 84 early 85 on the tour for the anamalize album . I've seen KISS several time i even had tickets to the show in Toronto that got cancelled one of their last 5 Shows ever but Paul was sick . My daughter bought me the tickets for my birthday her and i were on our way to the arena when we found out the show was cancelled.
I saw this version of Kiss live in Minneapolis in 1987 on the Crazy Nights tour. Amazing show with White Lion opening. Eric Carr did a solo with synthesizer drums and played a whole damn song, melody and all. It was intense.
Agreed. I’ve watched documentaries explaining that Paul Stanley saved KISS. Gene, and the others were doing their own thing. And, the ever change up of band members. Paul stayed with the music, thus ensuring KISS would be around for 50 years. I’m glad that he did.
Such a great era of KISS, 1982 to 1985. They were amazing, the playing was great. And hard!!! “Under The Gun” is from their 1984 album ‘Animalize’ and the second song (with the awesome riff) “War Machine” is from their 1982 album ‘Creatures Of The Night’. That album is my favorite of theirs. Such a heavy KISS album, and with the greatest drum sound on any KISS record. The drum sound from ‘Creatures Of The Night’ was described by someone as “…the sound of an anvil falling down a staircase”.
When they did this song on The Creatures of the Night tour the drums were on a torrent of a tank gun had fire coming from it. The drummer was the late Eric Caravella
This is my version of Kiss. I became a fan in the late 80's, and while I love the 70's stuff, this is what's closest to my heart. Eric Carr truly was a beast behind the drums. I can wholeheartedly recommend his drum solo from this video. Some fun facts: This was Bruce Kulick's first gig as a full member of Kiss. Originally he was only going to fill in on this tour for their regular guitarist Mark St. John (whose short tenure in the band is a story in itself) who had some sort of problem with his hands. Apparently they decided to give him the boot right before this gig and make Kulick a full member of the band. Most of Paul's vocals where overdubbed in the studio for the video. However, the concert where broadcasted on the radio with the original vocals, so you can find a version where someone has synced the radio version with the video. The original vocals aren't that bad at all, but I guess they wanted perfection, and with all that jumping around you can't do it perfect. And it's pretty obvious, but Gene is wearing a wig here. He had cut his hair for a movie role.
War Machine was off of Creatures of the Night album. KISS wore the make up until 1983 and the Lick It Up album. Kept it off until 1996. I have been a fan of KISS since 1976. I got to see EVERY lineup including one of the few shows with Mark St John. Where he actually played the full show. I have loved seeing them in every incarnation of the band! I saw them 16 times and enjoyed each and every show! The concert you reviewed on this one was from 1984. Keep up the great content!
Although I became a Kiss fan in '77, this was my first tour to see live, in '85, when I was 16. That's Bruce Kulick on lead guitar and Eric Carr on drums. The opening band that night was Black 'N Blue with Tommy Thayer on lead guitar. Still have my "Animalize" VHS tape. "War Machine" was off "Creatures of the Night" from 1982, their last makeup album until the reunion in 1996. They released 7 albums sans makeup.
Animalize got me back into Kiss in the 80’s! A full metal album from start to finish. This was the type of drumming Eric Carr wanted to play from the time he joined Kiss. And he was still a fan of the band till the day he died.
War Machine was co-written by pop star Bryan Adams. Gene’s wearing a wig because this was his movie acting era where he had to cut off his hair for movie roles. Seton Hill, you never disappoint. Keep’em bangin’!
When people say that KISS was nothing without makeup and stunts, I happily refer them to Animalize: Uncensored. Wanna tell me again that they couldn’t play? Lol
Paul Stanley was at his vocal peak at this point. He even said in his book he had found his voice and he was going to go as high as he possibly could knowing that someday he would not be able to recreate and he was right lol But he was definitely in his zone in this time frame.
Saw the Animalize tour in Greenville SC (Krokus was opening act )and a facility work fell out of the ceiling and Died. Concert started about 2 hrs later. Eric Carr and Bruce Kulick took it to another level.
This was Bruce Kulick's first gig as a full member of KISS...oh man, I got this VHS as a Christmas present in 1985 and I must've seen this concert video for over 200 times already. I bought it as a bootleg DVD as well (ripped from LaserDisc).
its Eric Carr on drums and Bruce Kulick on lead . This was the 80s line up . Eric (RIP) was with the band just before Ace left and had his own makeup / character The Fox he passed away in 1991 from Cancer . The band eventually decided to take the makeup off after Creatures of the Night and in the 80s became more of a hair metal band. After Ace they had Vinnie Vincent who wore the Egyptian Warrior makeup , but took it off for Lick It Up , they parted ways with Vinnie ,then a brief Guitarist was Mark St John who worked on Animalize but had to leave shortly because of a health issue and Bruce was their guitarist up to 96 when they went back to makeup and the original lineup for the reunion.
Eric Carr - drummer. Saw these guys at a free concert in Galveston island Spring Break ‘90. They played in Houston that same night as well. Hot in the Shade tour. They totally jammed the hell out of us all on the beach. Sad that later in the year Eric passed away to cancer. But I got to see him hit those drums like a mad man👍Big hair was the thing in the 80’s. Hot pink and tattered clothes
Ot should be noted that Mark St John was the guitarist on the animalized album but had to leave the band during the tour due to health reasons. Bruce Kulick ( younger brother of Bob) stepped in and began a long tenure with the band. Bruce doesn't get the credit he deserves for his guitar skills unfortunately.
Rock'n'Hell was originally written by Jim Vallance and released by Bachman Turner Overdrive. Bryan Adams suggested that they rewrite it for Kiss. Jean Beauvoir played the bass on the album version of Under The Gun. Mark St. John played guitar.
That riff you love in War Machine was “borrowed” by STP on their 1st album on the song Sex Type Thing! I saw STP supporting Megadeth back in the early 90s & didn’t know who STP was. As soon as the riff hit, I looked at my buddy and said “that’s War Machine!”
They took off the makeup in 1983 until 1996,these 2 songs are from a mtv concert. Eric carr was a beast on drums, bruce kulick was a first class shredder. Btw genes wearing a wig. He had cut his hair to do a good tom selleck movie called runaway.
Glad you didn't judge the outfits. Everyone was wearing those clothes. From Def Leppard to Bon Jovi to David Lee Roth. Anyone in rock and roll was wearing those Mick and Keith were wearing those clothes. Roll with the times brother. Let's go!
To great songs by them. They took off the makeup in 1983.👍👍🤘🤘. This is that the eighties Kiss look once they took off the makeup starting with tge lick it up album in 1983.
16:36 When they first started in 1973, the critics said that they were crazy, no one wanted to see a band wearing make up. WRONG! For 10 years, no one saw them without make up. Then in 1983, they did have a big reveal live on MTV, followed by the release of "Lick It Up". Critics now said that nobody would accept them without their make up. WRONG twice! In 1996, they put the make up back on and - YUP - Critics again said that they were done. WRONG a third time. When they first started, they had a real hard time getting booked. Their show was so good that none of the headliners wanted KISS to open for them. Their show could not be topped. But they weren't big enough to headline themselves. They ended up mostly playing small clubs- until. They decided that everyone loved the energy of the live shows, so they released "Alive!" in 1975. This was the break out. They followed it up with Destroyer and the rest is...ah...KISStory!
War machine was released on the album Creatures of the night from 1982 when they still used make up. I think it was Vinnie Vincent who wrote it, the guitarist after original guitarist Ace Frehley. 👍⭐️👊
That's Eric Carr on the double bass drum kit. Yes, he was just a beast on the drums. Under The Gun came from the album Animalize. War Machine came from Creatures Of The Night album, the entire album is incredible from start to finish and is one of their heaviest albums ever. War Machine was co-written by Bryan Adams, believe it or not, along with Vinnie Vincent and Gene Simmons. Bryan Adams has recently released a video of him performing his version of the song, which is still very good. I used to LOVE playing this song and riff.
Two things: 1) “Animalize” was the only album with Mark St. John (RIP) on guitar. He was a shredder and KISS switched to a harder sound for that album and 2) “War Machine” was cowritten by Gene with Bryan Adams (yes, THAT Bryan Adams)
And Brother. The ANIMALIZE Album was one of the BEST Recorded Albums Ever.. I mean LITERALLY. It Will BLOW Your EAR DRUMS OUT.. For REAL. IT IS SO FRICKIN L.O.U.D. .... EVEN THE CASSETTE......
War Machine is from Creatures Of The Night. Highly rated by many. But it was a messy time for the band, as Ace had left, Vinnie was coming in, they were taking the makeup off, and Gene was in Hollywood. Several writers were involved, hence it being excellent lol.
Yes, Eric Carr was doing double bass drum. This was the first Kiss concert I got to go to. It was in Glens Falls, NY. Queensryche was the opening band. You should check out Queensryche.
@setonhillstudios sweet, I need to catch up! I got to hang backstage with them in 2009 before they split up. Great guys! Was so cool chatting with Geoff Tate!
That’s what I love about Gene’s best songs are the hooks/riffs and tough-guy machismo stance he takes on songs like War Machine…God Of Thunder…Almost Human…Larger Than Life…Sweet Pain…Under The Rose…Mr. Blackwell…I…Modern Day Delilah…I Love It Loud…Killer. There’s even some good stuff on his 1978 solo record like Man Of A Thousand Faces. That’s what’s so great about each member of KISS writing from their character’s perspective. So much good music yet to explore. Even the sloppy kisses have some kind of redeeming quality! Turn it up!
Under the Gun is off Aniumalize, War Machine is off Creatures of The Night. Yes Kiss went t7hrough a hair metal phase. It is Eric Carr on drums and Bruce Kulick on lead guitar
War machine is one of my favorites and with each member line up its play differently. The solos and ending. Also just to note black diamond from this same concert is my fav version. You should check it out. Also Bryan Adams just released his version of the song as well.
Also wanted to add if you like bad ass kiss intros check out no no no from the crazy nights tours. Bruce a s Eric carr kill it in this song. Also it's better live than studio
eric carr,.....is the kiss drummer for the entire 80's run through out 83 till 96 the reunion tour they stayed make up free under the gun comes from animalize, war machine comes from creatures of the night album which is the tour that introduced us to vinnie vincent
You want tough Gene songs with strong riffs, vocals and drums? Here are some deep dive cuts that everyone sleeps on… 1. Lonely Is The Hunter 2. Dance All Over Your Face 3. Not For The Innocent 4. Young And Wasted 5. Fits Like A Glove I’m excited for you because I know how I felt when I first heard these songs. You’re welcome. A video concept that would be cool to see is your top favorite songs by each original character of KISS…The Demon, The Spaceman, The Starchild, and The Cat (Gene, Ace, Paul, Peter, of course). Enjoy.
Finally some non make up 80s Kiss! You should really look at I Stole Your Love from Detroit 1990. The coolest stage show they had during those years until the Revenge 1992 stage.

Thanks man you’re a real one!
Appreciate that! 🙏🏻
Eric Carr was the drummer, and this was the second tour without makeup. A funny side note is that Brian Adams wrote War Machine
Gene is wearing a wig here. He got his hair cut for a movie.
Runaway.
He had one which looked like Prince Valiant in the promotional pictures for the Animalize album that was my fav wig of his
War Machine was co-written with Bryan Adams. He just released his version of it last week.
This is the mighty Eric Carr playing double bass drum, he notoriously hit so hard his fingers bled after every show!
War machine was released on the album Creatures of the night from 1982 when they still used make up. I think it was Vinnie Vincent who wrote it, the guitarist after original guitarist Ace Frehley. 👍⭐️👊
War Machine was written by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance. Gene added a lyric to get writing credit.
I used to LOVE playing this song and riff.
fun fact.. Bryan Adams co-wrote war maschine .. he just released a video of him doing it
Two things: 1) “Animalize” was the only album with Mark St. John (RIP) on guitar. He was a shredder and KISS switched to a harder sound for that album and 2) “War Machine” was cowritten by Gene with Bryan Adams (yes, THAT Bryan Adams)
Something to listen to is Within. Gene sings and its dark too. Love it myself. Wish it had airplay but it didn't.
Love Paul Stanley ❤
I've seen Eric Carr for the Hot In The Shade tour.. may he rest in peace forever.. such talent
And Brother. The ANIMALIZE Album was one of the BEST Recorded Albums Ever.. I mean LITERALLY. It Will BLOW Your EAR DRUMS OUT.. For REAL. IT IS SO FRICKIN L.O.U.D. .... EVEN THE CASSETTE......
I like the "Animalize" album....I bought it new, back in the day!
"Heaven's On Fire" is another good, fun song from that record.
War Machine is from Creatures Of The Night. Highly rated by many. But it was a messy time for the band, as Ace had left, Vinnie was coming in, they were taking the makeup off, and Gene was in Hollywood. Several writers were involved, hence it being excellent lol.
Yes! Yes! Yes!
Yes, Eric Carr was doing double bass drum. This was the first Kiss concert I got to go to. It was in Glens Falls, NY. Queensryche was the opening band. You should check out Queensryche.
Same here but I saw creatures at the civic center before this show!
@@jimilove7773 cool!
I’ve covered Queensryche here on the channel! Phenomenal!
@setonhillstudios sweet, I need to catch up! I got to hang backstage with them in 2009 before they split up. Great guys! Was so cool chatting with Geoff Tate!
War Machine was on the album "Creatures Of The Night "
Turn it up!
That was my first kiss concert 1984 Cobo hall Detroit
Eric Carr R.I.P. was the best drummer kiss ever had.
War machine was written by Gene and Brian Adams
eric carr,.....is the kiss drummer for the entire 80's run through out 83 till 96 the reunion tour they stayed make up free under the gun comes from animalize, war machine comes from creatures of the night album which is the tour that introduced us to vinnie vincent
Do this whole show! RIP Eric Carr. 1950-1991 :(
🙏🏻
Right on!!! 🔥🔥 Eric Carr on Drums & Bruce Kulick on Lead 🙌
Eric Carr on the drums here.....And YES DOUBLE BASS DRUMS....I'm 47 & been a KISS fan since I was about 4 yrs old around '79/80.....
and WAR MACHINE was co written with a great Canadian Bryan Adams. He just put out a new video for it the other night
You want tough Gene songs with strong riffs, vocals and drums? Here are some deep dive cuts that everyone sleeps on…
1. Lonely Is The Hunter
2. Dance All Over Your Face
3. Not For The Innocent
4. Young And Wasted
5. Fits Like A Glove
I’m excited for you because I know how I felt when I first heard these songs. You’re welcome. A video concept that would be cool to see is your top favorite songs by each original character of KISS…The Demon, The Spaceman, The Starchild, and The Cat (Gene, Ace, Paul, Peter, of course). Enjoy.
Eric Carr, awesome double kicker!
War Machine is off Creatures of the Night. Their heaviest record and my favorite. And the final makeup album of the original run.
Finally some non make up 80s Kiss!
You should really look at I Stole Your Love from Detroit 1990. The coolest stage show they had during those years until the Revenge 1992 stage.
Listen to Young and Wasted on this same concert, Animalize Live. Eric Carr sings the lead vocals.
War machine was co-written by Bryan Adams
And Bryan Adams released his version last week. 43 years later after Kiss
KISS rules
💯
Creatures Of The Night was the album. Bryan Adams and Gene wrote this one.
