One of the most underrated games made by GTA's Rockstar was the warriors. They got a bunch of the original cast to return as voice actors. Just as a fun bit of trivia - at the end, part of the reason for Swan to say, "When we see the ocean, figure we're home" is because it mirrors one of the most important moments in the book that Sol Yurick based his book and, by extension, the film on - the *Anabasis* of Xenophon. When the Greeks finally reached the Black Sea after retreating from the center of Mesopotamia, Xenophon reports that they cried out, "Thalatta! Thalatta!" (lit. The sea! The sea!). It's a symbolic connection to the moment those in the original tale reached safety.

With all the mentions of JOHN WICK I'm surprised no one caught that David Patrick Kelly, who plays Luther, was also in the first two WICK movies. He plays the Cleaner who shows up to remove inconvenient corpses for a big fee.
The character Luther, who shot Cyrus, is played by David Patrick Kelly...who played Charlie, the Cleaner, in John Wick 1 & 2. He was also Sully in Commando, who Arnold held over a cliff with one hand and dropped him down. This was Kelly's film debut, and he's done tons of film, television, and theater. "Warriors....Come out and play-ayyyy." Swan was played by Michael Beck, who made two HUGE flops that I happen to love. The first, he was the leading man, Sonny, opposite Olivia Newton-John in the cult movie musical Xanadu, which also starred Gene Kelly. It's a fun movie with great songs and a very thin plot but a lot of heart. Next, he was in an action-adventure film called MegaForce, directed by Hal Needham (Smokey and the Bandit) and produced by Albert S. Ruddy (The Godfather & Million Dollar Baby), about a phantom army that is run by the UN. He was the second in command of MegaForce, Dallas. The film starred Barry Bostwick (Rocky Horror Picture Show) and Persis Khambatta (Star Trek The Motion Picture). It is fairly terrible but fun. The female plain-clothes cop on the park bench is Mercedes Ruehl, who won an Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for The Fisher King with Jeff Bridges and Robin Williams. in 2023, Lin-Manuel Miranda announced that he was working on a musical based on the original book that the movie is based on.
"Warriors come out to pla-yay-a." Cyrus was a Greek general. His warriors, 10k of them were trapped behind enemy lines and had to fight their way back home.
The gun-toting crazy in this movie is played by David Patrick Kelly. He played The Cleaner in "John Wick." He was also blown up in the car in "The Crow."
The cemetery that they used in the movie is "The cemetery of the Evergreens" in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Bill "Bojangles" Robinson is one of the famous residents there.
Little Trivia: Shooting the boardwalk scene, the director told the actor David Patrick Kelly to do something to get their attention. He found the bottles under the boardwalk and then mimicked a bully he'd had in high school. Total improv GOLD! Also, The Warriors is one of the most fun movies ever made. Can you dig it?!
Smokey The Bear's classic slogan was "Remember - only YOU can prevent forest fires". The poster in the subway plays on the fact that everyone knew that slogan, and was saying "if you don't prevent them, who will?"
The actress playing Mercy was injured while filming the movie. She actually broke her wrist and ended up in a cast. The jacket was added in order to hide her cast.
Based off the Anabasis by Xenophon. Ten thousand Greek mercenaries abandoned in Asia Minor after the death of Cyrus the Young had to march back to their homeland surrounded by a thousand miles of hostile armies. Edit: never mind, George did homework 😂
Beginning in 2014, with the Golden State Warriors playoff run, and subsequent dominance for several years, the iconic Warriors line made a persistent comeback in the Bay Area. We were chanting it a lot at the Coliseum and at BART stations. Great fun!
Never quite figured out who he was talking to on the phone. He seemed to be 'showing respect' to an unusual degree for him. Was it a police handler? Did the cops put him up to shooting Cyrus? (to neutralize a big threat, followed immediately by dozens or hundreds of cops rushing in to shut it all down). It did seem the cops were waiting in the wings for the shot to be fired.
I watched this at a drive-in movie theater when I was a little kid, around the time it was released. The whole experience made quite the impression on young me. Then a little later on I rented it on VHS. Has some iconic lines that my brother and I still repeat today.
I first watched this on pay tv back in the early to mid 80's and I still can't watch anything with David Patrick Kelly in it without hearing "Warriors, come out to playay" with the sound of clinking beer bottles. That is the most memorable line from any movie for me.
This is an iconic movie because it stirred great interest among real gangs. Real gangs were used as extras in the park scene. When this was shown in a Boston theater, a real gang fight erupted after the movie. "Warriors, come out and play- ay" is an iconic comment that orignated from this movie. I believe that the gang leader clicking the 3 bottles together was an impromptu gesture.
This is one of my favorite films of all time. I grew up during this time and the film perfectly capture the vibe and grittiness of NYC in the late 70s.
The fact that James Remar was in The Warriors 1979, 48Hrs 1982 & was Hicks in Aliens 1986 (until he was fired during filming) is a wild run of classic movies to be in.
Since y’all checked this out, may I recommend another Walter Hill film? It’s called Streets of Fire. It came out after he made 48 Hrs. And it stars Michael Pare of Eddie and The Cruisers fame, and also stars Rick Moranis, Willem Dafoe and Diane Lane. I think y’all may like it if you enjoyed this one,
“Hey Warriors, COME OUT TO PLAY. HEY WARRIORS, COME OUT TO PLAYYY” with the little bottles was completely improvised by the actor according to several sources.
I always like to imagine this as a precursor to the world of Escape From New York. We already see that the gangs outnumber the cops. There's even a character similar to The Duke.
Joe Walsh, after he left James Gang, was commissioned to come up with that Outro theme song - IN THE CITY, and before he joined The Eagles. "Trains", as in the R word, existed long before this film. True this - I was working as a weekend security guard at a Suburban Mega-church at night and a couple neighborhood kids on bikes used to try and harass the guard on duty - I found out one of the kid's first name and would taunt him as he lurked in the shadows while I slowly cruised in my ATV, "Niiicholaaaas - Come out and PLAAA-AAAY!" - he soon quit his little games. Just remembered I tapped my memory banks of this movie to do that.
This film drew a lot of inspiration from the actual street gangs that ran different portions of NYC and LA, many of which were just trying to keep their neighborhoods safe.
Since you were drawing comparisons to John Wick, Idk if anyone else has mentioned it but the main "bad guy" in this movie leads the cleaning crew in John Wick. You know, the one they call for a "dinner reservation"😉
That brings back a lot of memories. The movie was set starting out in the Bronx, not far from where I was living at the time it was released. And I knew many of those subway stations, in the Bronx and Manhattan on the No. 4, D and C subway lines. But it was scary when the movie first opened as you could always tell when it let out from the theater about a block away as you could here young guys calling out “Warriors! Come out to Playy-ayyy.” In my neighborhood, we occasionally saw the big Bronx gangs, like the Savage Skulls or Black Spades, but in my neighborhood, local Irish and Hispanic gangs started facing off over turf. It was a scary time when I moved out in 1979.
The movie was pulled from theatres after just a few weeks because of violence, both inside the theatres (someone was stabbed to death at one screening), and outside afterwards, as groups of 'young toughs' assaulted each other and passersby. I've also read that actual gangs would show up during the filming, taunting the actors and challenging them to fights. The police escorts for the filming told them they had to be out of certain neighborhoods before dark or their safety couldn't be guaranteed.
@@GK-yi4xv I remember it was released in winter, so the streets weren't as packed and scary as they would be during the summer. But I do remember the controversy about the movie encouraging gang activity. Plus, NYC had a big blizzard - the Blizzard of 1979 - shortly after it was released, which further cut down on street problems. Everyone was too busy digging out to get into trouble.
I live uptown right by Riverside Park. Walk the paths around where the opening scene with/where Cyrus was shot all the time. And it makes me smile every single time.
The fight with the Baseball Furies was also referenced by Scott Pilgrim! It's the fight with the stunt doubles, with skateboards instead of baseball bats, and the music is a clear homage too!
Just wanted to add, that the Poster, the Bear is named Smokey and his Catch phrase was "Only You, Can Prevent Forest Fire", focus on the burning forest in his Eye, as a Tear Drops. Also "If Not You , Who" was also a revised phase. Loved being an 70s-80s kid. My uncle took me to watch in a small theater on the Latino side of town, where there were still some gangs, and Loved it.
The New York City subway system is super easy. There's a map on every platform so you always know where you are and where you have to go. Simone was right about the Smokey the Bear poster, George. Smokey Bear is an American campaign and advertising icon of the U.S. Forest Service in the Wildfire Prevention Campaign, which is the longest-running public service announcement campaign in United States history to date.
I'm glad y'all screened the original version of this film ... there is a director's re-cut which adds some additional (un-necessary) footage and the director used some really weird "screen-wipes" between scenes where it freezes the action and cartoon/comic-books the action on screen and then transitions. To me, it interrupts the flow of the story and makes the film feel less "real" (this original cut is actually harder to find nowadays as most DVD/BluRay versions are only the Director's Cut - much like Lucas' original Star Wars -films)
The re-release was a terrible idea. Tony Scott (Ridley's brother) was preparing to re-make this move, set in modern day L.A., when he jumped off a bridge and the project was scrapped. Supposedly, over a hundred thousand actual L.A. gang members had agreed to call a temporary truce to appear as extras, because the original is such a cult classic with them.
"Only WHO can prevent forest fires? You pressed YOU, referring to me. The Correct answer is YOU!" One of my favorite Simpsons lines haha. That poster was Smokey the Bear who was a mascot for forest fire prevention :D "If not you, then who?"
Lynne Thigpen had the golden voice as the DJ. She went on to play the voice in Carmen SanDiego tv series, along with many other roles. And yes, those who did the music for Wick, with the lady playing the DJ took it from this movie.
Me and some friends went to the local dive cinema to watch it, we were around 13 years old not gonna get in right, some local bikers showed up and bought our tickets for us and got us in. Best afternoon ever, itwas a double header Enter the Dragon was second show.
1. When this came out many of the larger cities didn't run it. They were afraid it would lead to gang violence. 2. Late 70s soundtrack. 🤩 3. My favorite character is Luther. He's f-ing nuts. 4. Skates may look cool, but would suck in a fight. 5. "Warriors, come out to play" was ad lib. The director told David Patrick Kelly to come up with something menacing, and he looked back to when he was a kid and a creepy old neighbor used to torment the kids. 6. NEVER take off your colors. If you do it's the same as not having them. 7. End it with Joe Walsh.🤩
This movie actually caused a fear of gang riots at movie theaters when it was shown. The 70s up to 1990 were a period of increasing fear of urban(i.e. black) violence; then crime rates unexpectedly started to drop, until now. Also the bit when the girl looks at the flowers dropped by the prom girl you can see she is expressing a bit of longing and envy for all that that world represents, which makes the leader picking up and giving her the bouquet a little more meaningful.
Cmon George, you should know who Smokey is from the Simpsons reference: "Only who can prevent forest fires? You pressed you, referring to me. That is incorrect. The correct answer is: you." 😊
Fun facts: David Patrick Kelly who plays Luther in this also plays Luther in 48 Hrs which was also directed by Walter Hill and also featured both James Remar (Ajax) as Ganz and Sonny Landham (subway cop) as Billy Bear. All 3 actors appear in many of Hill’s films throughout the 70s/80s/90s. James Remar was originally supposed to play Hicks in Aliens but was fired due to his drug problem and replaced with Michael Biehn, by producer Walter Hill and director James Cameron, and never worked with Hill again
Fun trivia: the female cop on the bench is a young Mercedes Ruehl, who would win an Oscar in 1992 for _The Fisher King_ & later played the mom in _The Last Action Hero._
Rockstar made a video game in 2005 on this. It served as an adaptation to the movie's story and mostly a prequel to it in a Beat em up style......it's great and one of my favourite games of all time. The had most of the cast reprise their roles through voice acting and brought back the soundtrack (with extra songs)
Every 80's and 90's beat 'em up (Final Fight, Double Dragon, Streets of Rage...) owns everything to The Warriors, from the gangs themselves to the stages (subway, park, pier...) to their structure (cross the city from point A to point B).
To shoot a scene in a graveyard, you apply for a permit with the city's Permits and Licenses office. My dad was the Foreman of a cemetery in the Vancouver and the point of contact with the crews.
One thing this movie did bad was how little screen time Cleon received, he ended up getting mauled by the Riffs due to mistaken perception. But thanks to Rockstar making the Warriors game in 2006, the backstory of the Warriors and other gangs was beautifully well written.

He was also Sully, the guy that Arnold dropped off the cliff in Commando.
@@jculver1674 and was in twin peaks!
He's wonderfully creepy as Sam the Sleazebag in the delightfully cheesy The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, as well.
"Warriors....Come out and play-ayyyy."
Swan was played by Michael Beck, who made two HUGE flops that I happen to love.
In my headcanon, The Warriors takes place in the same universe as A Clockwork Orange and Escape From New York.
That's a pretty messed-up universe. But stylish.
I like to think that's how New York City is in Batman's universe.
Excellent call.
Thanks!
I'm from the Bronx - I know every scene in this movie. My friend Farrel Tannenbaum (RIP) played the leader of the Irish gang.
The main antagonist, the guy who who actually shot Syrus. That's the waste management guy in John Wick. He's the one who collects the bodies.
That's a cool bit of trivia. 👍
The gun-toting crazy in this movie is played by David Patrick Kelly. He played The Cleaner in "John Wick." He was also blown up in the car in "The Crow."
Simone trying to explain Smokey the Bear to George was hilarious!
Do they have Smokey the Bear in Canada?
“Only you can prevent forest fires”
" The Wanderers " is another Must See from the same era.
You can also hear Walter Hill's voice saying "Patrick go" before David Patrick Kelly starts with the bottles 😉
The way TH-cam sorted the comments for me, there's a completely different explaination for were he got that from just above you.
I once heard a theory that Luther was an informant for the police and he was given the order of kill Cyrus for preventing the take over for the city
It's Too Close for Comfort.
Great that you mentioned D&D! I saw this film during its controversial theatrical run, and my buddy whispered, "This is just like D&D!"
Based off the Anabasis by Xenophon. Ten thousand Greek mercenaries abandoned in Asia Minor after the death of Cyrus the Young had to march back to their homeland surrounded by a thousand miles of hostile armies. Edit: never mind, George did homework 😂
Fun fact the rogue is Charlie the cleaner from John wick lol
I stumbled upon this movie on late night t.v and absolutely love it i watch it whenever possible i love when people react to it
@3:02 He was in "Harry Morgan" in Dexter. & You called it, he was the troublemaker of the group in the movie
Beginning in 2014, with the Golden State Warriors playoff run, and subsequent dominance for several years, the iconic Warriors line made a persistent comeback in the Bay Area. We were chanting it a lot at the Coliseum and at BART stations. Great fun!
One of The Warriors that gets handcuffed to the bench was also in " 48 Hrs " & a horror movie.
Luther single handedly prevented a gang take over of new york and in a way is the true hero of the movie.
He is an infiltrate
the line "Oh Warriors, come out to PLAY" is from this movie, the references of the line was heard in many different films and TV shows
And yet I never heard it until this video.
@threadbomb- thats on you bud. That line is one of most iconic libes all of movie history. I wouldnt go bragging about not knowing it lol…
Breeeaaast milllkkk
You make my daaaayyyaaayyyy
And a Twisted Sister video
I watched this at a drive-in movie theater when I was a little kid, around the time it was released. The whole experience made quite the impression on young me. Then a little later on I rented it on VHS. Has some iconic lines that my brother and I still repeat today.
I first watched this on pay tv back in the early to mid 80's and I still can't watch anything with David Patrick Kelly in it without hearing "Warriors, come out to playay" with the sound of clinking beer bottles. That is the most memorable line from any movie for me.
The actor who plays the bad guy is a trained Shakespearean actor. Saw him play Puck once, brilliant.
Georges delivery and timing of "kith" was perfect 😂😂😂
This is one of my favorite films of all time.
I grew up during this time and the film perfectly capture the vibe and grittiness of NYC in the late 70s.
If you’re wondering who Swan looks like; check out Andy Gibb, younger brother of the BeeGees...... 💯
" Warrios Come Out To Play " wasn't in the script. That was improvised on the spot from the actor.
I want a phone alert with Simone saying "Totes!"
Apparently the actor had a really creepy neighbor who lived across the street, and would say something similar at night as a taunt.
I always like to imagine this as a precursor to the world of Escape From New York. We already see that the gangs outnumber the cops. There's even a character similar to The Duke.
The baseball furies have the best style. My halloween costume every year. 👊😁
I am so happy George picked up on the John Wick call back! I felt like I was the only one in the theater that got that reference!
The female cop who handcuffed the Warrior to the bench was Academy Award winner Mercedes Ruehl.
As seem in The Fisher King! (also starring Robin Williams, Jeff Bridges, Amanda Plummer, directed by Terry Gilliam)
The Baseball Furies look is based on the band KISS.
I was born in NYC in 1979. I lived most of my life near Coney Island. I can smell this movie when they are on the trains.
RIP Andrew Laszlo, Lynne Thigpen, Marcelino Sánchez and Roger Hill.
And David Harris (Cochise).
Along with Edward Sewer and Paul Greco
The fight with the Baseball Furies was also referenced by Scott Pilgrim! It's the fight with the stunt doubles, with skateboards instead of baseball bats, and the music is a clear homage too!
The electric eliminators. That's the Amish gang.
Underrated comment
Just wanted to add, that the Poster, the Bear is named Smokey and his Catch phrase was "Only You, Can Prevent Forest Fire", focus on the burning forest in his Eye, as a Tear Drops. Also "If Not You , Who" was also a revised phase. Loved being an 70s-80s kid.
My uncle took me to watch in a small theater on the Latino side of town, where there were still some gangs, and Loved it.
7:16: this is film making in NYC in the 70s… You don’t George… you just film it, and run! 😂
Think they call it guerilla filmmaking.
@@musicaleuphoria8699 maybe so lol
The Correct answer is YOU!"
One of my favorite Simpsons lines haha. That poster was Smokey the Bear who was a mascot for forest fire prevention :D
"If not you, then who?"
James Remar, living legend, reduced to "Richard from Sex and the City"...
And the original Corporal Hicks in Aliens (fired by James Cameron for drug use)
He was originally cast as Hicks in "Aliens", but had drug problems back then and Biehn took over at the last minute
@@congoliab He's still in a couple of scenes in Aliens where you don't see his face (so, no need to re-shoot).
Lynne Thigpen had the golden voice as the DJ. She went on to play the voice in Carmen SanDiego tv series, along with many other roles. And yes, those who did the music for Wick, with the lady playing the DJ took it from this movie.
Sometimes I drive around with three bottles on my fingers
😅
Who doesn't?
Me and some friends went to the local dive cinema to watch it, we were around 13 years old not gonna get in right, some local bikers showed up and bought our tickets for us and got us in. Best afternoon ever, itwas a double header Enter the Dragon was second show.
1. When this came out many of the larger cities didn't run it. They were afraid it would lead to gang violence.
2. Late 70s soundtrack. 🤩
"Warriors! Come out to play!" And Joe Walsh at the end are the best parts
Check out “Streets of Fire;” another movie by the same director with a similar quasi-fantasy vibe.
Aim high 😎
I don't know if this movie would make the list as well , but I'm putting it out there : Eddie And The Cruisers
The correct answer is: you." 😊
ooooooooooooooh! that guy! okaaay!
I loved her in Married to the Mob. And she was the mom in Big as well.
The main guy who shot Sigiruss Was in the crow He was the one Blown up in his own car .
And of course Sully from Commando
Every 80's and 90's beat 'em up (Final Fight, Double Dragon, Streets of Rage...) owns everything to The Warriors, from the gangs themselves to the stages (subway, park, pier...) to their structure (cross the city from point A to point B).
To shoot a scene in a graveyard, you apply for a permit with the city's Permits and Licenses office. My dad was the Foreman of a cemetery in the Vancouver and the point of contact with the crews.
@@jasonmcewen436 oh, so there *was* permits and parleying after all
One thing this movie did bad was how little screen time Cleon received, he ended up getting mauled by the Riffs due to mistaken perception. But thanks to Rockstar making the Warriors game in 2006, the backstory of the Warriors and other gangs was beautifully well written.
" why'd you do it. Why'd you waste Cyrus?"
"I don't know. I just like to do things like that"
I like the implied plot that Luther is working for someone. I always wondered if he was a police plant.
@@LordVolkovthat would make sense.
This movie had swag and also spawned one the best movie based video games ever made.
"CAN YOU DIG IT?!?"
I grew up in Coney Island. Everyone there loves this movie 😆
