How To Paint Motorcycle Parts At Home - Like A PRO!

- Painting motorcycle parts at home, or DIY auto painting, can be a disaster if you don't know what you are doing. We partnered up with Matthew Means of Anaheim Rod & Custom (www.anaheimrodandcustom.com/) to pain one of our famous Custom Peanut Gas Tanks for the Honda Shadow. If you are going to paint a motorcycle or paint motorcycle parts at home, you're going to want to know how to do it well, and Matthew breaks it all down.

And below is the step by step breakdown for how to pain custom motorcycle parts.
Step 1. Clean the metal
Step 2. Sand all the surfaces
Step 3. Remove dust and wipe clean
Step 4. Make sure you have a decent protected area to paint in
Step 5. Apply first coat - sealer! Wear an organic vapor mask
Step 6. Apply the base coat #1
Step 7. Apply the base coat # 2
Step 8. Apply Orienting Coat
Step 9. Apply Clear Coat -2 layers

I mean. I did it with a Rust-Oleum rattle can in my barn. It came out amazing but seriously be prepared to spend a lot of time sanding with various grits of sand paper. And then to spend the time waxing and polishing after you sand your clear coat. (And I mean like. A LOT of time. Days, weeks even. It's a work of patience if you wanna be cheap like me)
I forgot I had a professional well ventilated paint studio and spray gun in my house

Thanks for the video. If I do any plastic parts that flex do I need a different paint than I would use on the tank or is there an additive that I should use? I want the bags and your pack to match the fenders and tank.

I live above my garage and will plastic off the garage to try and control for dust. I plan to paint with the door open and then close late at night. The only fumes that should linger should be while waiting to cure. Thoughts?

All you need to do is gently rough the surface with a scotchbrite pad

iirc you can put them over the clear coat, or before. allowing the paint to gas out and cure first is key.

I do not understand the different coats. Are you using the same cans? are you mixing them with other colours? If so what is the ratio?

I and other professional painters will actually use Rustoleum etching primer. Works great. Great for bare metal. For plastic us their Primer with sealer.

Your guys didn't make the covers of motorcycle mags (when they still published them before internet) and are award winning painters like guys I know. I DONT use degreaser or brake cleaner. I use water with alcohol mix (much cheaper) and then wax and grease remover made for pre paint. I always like to etch prime before primer even tho its dtm, or epoxy they say is best for full raw metal pieces. Nice vid tho I love to see diff ways people do things.

Do you put a clear over matte black?
if youre going to mix your own paint, you can spray a flat clear at the end of whatever color you painted.
How and when would you apply say a Harley logo on that? Before the clear coat?
you can do before or after, ive seen both.
Will you wet sand and buff the last clear coat ?
