    Can we do a decent paint job on our fancy new bodywork with rattle can spray paint from the local hardware store (DIY store for you Brits)? Mr. Moss is very OCD with his painting process, Mr. Williams not so much... like, not a whit. Can this marriage be saved?

    For next time, you can spend a little bit more and buy some automotive paints in a can instead of enamel. That stuffs a pain to sand down later! You can buy automotive paint at any auto body supply shop with whatever color you like they can mix it for you in a can. Buy a 1k high build primer sand that with 400, 600 then spray a basecoat, and then spray 2k clearcoat. You can have them mix a single stage color and clear in one can aswell, if youre not confident in your painting skills.

      Good job on the panels... It is better to lay the clear on thicker, and not start and stop. Start the spray before you hit the panel and run the length and return n on a 75% overlap. Coat the edges and hard to reach places first.... Hell, at 100mph, if someone is worried about how glossy your paint looks, then racing isn't in their blood .

    JIS screwdrivers are essential to remove stuck "phillips head" screws on japanese bikes, because of their taper they stay in and do not not try to came out as "traditional" screwdrivers would.
    They saved tons of almost stripped screws from my 2003 SV650... The previous owner was a loctite enthusiast, he put that stuff everywhere (like on the seat screws), good luck taking them off.

    As a professional bodywork and paint guy, soz to say you are much better at tuning suspension than you are at paintwork Dave....but I tell ya what....if you are ever over in the UK, I'll paint your bike if you set up the suspenders on two of my bikes!! Fair swap Sir? hehe.

    I use rattle cans a lot. I find gently warming the workpiece with a heat gun drives of any moisture and lets the paint lay really well. I also put the cans in a bucket of warm water for ten minutes. The paint becomes less viscous, let’s the rattle mix it easier and it lays better with less risk of blobs. It’s worth wiping the nozzle every half dozen passes.
    Enjoyed yer video n keep them coming 👍👍

    JIS vs Philly debate?
    Well, I was removing the "filter sock assembly" on my fuel pump on my 09' Kawi Ninja 650R. Screws had the lil dot mark. Used a Phillips, stripped one. Stopped and remembered about JIS. Bought 4 piece JIS set off amazon same Hozon brand. The JIS screwdriver removed the stripped one pretty easy and finished the project. That was 4,000 miles ago and never looked back! JIS ftw on japan bikes! :)

    When I first started racing in the early 90’s I’d prep and paint all of my fairings! It’s a hell of a lot of work! Then by the mid 90’s I was lucky enough to be sponsored by a car smash repairer, who had all the modern paint facilities available! So not only did they end up supply a professional job, they also repaired and repainted damaged ones! Much better! 👍😎🇦🇺

I personally am more the stickler type, so I see the struggle when it comes to the "good enough" attitude, but that also keep it balanced. Well done Daves. • @CatalystReactionSBW
      @CatalystReactionSBW  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dave Williams, editor, replying here. I feel compelled to jump in here with some additional info. Rattle can spray paint is uncatalyzed, compared to proper automotive paint with hardener etc. For our epic hypersport tire test I rode the bike 8000 miles (13000 km) during Spring and early Summer in agricultural areas of CA. The bodywork became an insecticide of course. I found the bug juice was acidic enough to actually melt the rattle can spray paint finish and it became all mottled. Vinyl wrap suffers no such degradation. It holds up more like a proper automotive paint job. If I remember correctly, someone posted that you can find clear coat catalyzed rattle can spray paint these days. That would be the next test in the Spring of 2023

    Why would you need to SCUFF plastic parts? It is not paint....if you scuff it you will see no change in color or paint coming off.....I'm not scuffing anything and I am sure it will be fine
