- What is an Illusion? Something that's wrongly interpreted by the senses, a distortion of the senses? Can beliefs be illusions, can ideas? How much of the magic in George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series is based on illusion, and what part have illusions played in the roles of mystics and charlatans in their world. The world of "A Song of Ice and Fire," is full of illusions. When hearing the word, most people tend to think of visual illusions, but illusions can actually happen with any of the senses. And anyone no matter how perceptive can have trouble seeing through some illusions.

What you say about how the faceless men might essentially truly become another person for a time sounds to me awfully familiar to how greenseers and wargs are able to possess someone or something else for a time, truly becoming one with the other entity, but if they keep it for long enough then they can end up forgetting who they are.
Perhaps the ability to change faces works in a generally similar way
Thematically, I always thought magic was connected to the illusion of power. You think your weilding it, but maybe it’s possessing you?
No offense to Quinn but I'd rather look at some art whilst listening. It's a bit weird the way he doesn't blink or show any emotion and also this is not the right format for using a face cam. Its like expecting that people want to see the face of the narrator while listening to an audiobook. If you want your face to get famous or w/e why don't you just pop in a bit in the beginning like an intro.
Man I love that you explore your possibilties, but I kind of prefer the old "voice in the background and artwork upfront" video style.

this might be my personal opinion but the camera being right in your face and the intense staring is a bit much. feel like im being held hostage watching this video not watching someone discuss their ideas. its off putting to me. i prefer images/quotes elsewise i just dont look at the screen.

Just to add to this: The Iron Throne, like many kings in the past, has no standing army. He pretty much relies on soldiers from every other region in Westeros. If at any point all the people wanted to stop following the king, they could and he could do nothing about it. And yet, people persist in following him anyway. At the very least, Aegon could claim to have three fire breathing lizards to back up his claim, but after they died off, the kings have ruled with the emperor's new clothes. In fact, the only reason they seem to follow is because they don't want to plunge the continent into a prolonged civil war.

Interesting that the remark about knowledge being power was so infamously given to Littlefinger in the show. Especially since Varys was raising the question of who was actually responsible for the death of Ned and many fans think Littlefinger is the culprit.

You voice is full of emotions but your face betrays it. Damn no facial expressions, now I know how I look to other people they keep saying my face is too non expressive.
A potential illusion that intrigues me is Melisandre referencing finger bones when discussing glamours. I took this as a dog whistle for the reader, because as we know Davos wore a bag of his finger bones to bring himself luck. But they were lost during the Battle of Blackwater Bay. So either Melisandre somehow got them once they fell off Davos, or she switched other finger bones w/Davos's before the battle and plans to use his in a glamour later if need be.
The videos were better back when you didin't show your face. It was more mysterious

I could be forgetting parts of the books, but is there a "wise enough" person that can see past Melisandre's illusions? As you stated, belief in her magic/religion of the Lord of Light didn't save Renley or Penrose from the deadly aspect of her "magic". I wonder what type of wisdom is necessary to see through her illusions? I feel like Davos and Varys both could be that wise man, but both see the desired effects of her illusions?
I don’t think it’s necessary “wisdom” that allows men to see through the glamour, but more along the lines of “men see what they expect to see”. She required the lord of bones bone armour to strengthen her glamour on mance and allow it to take full effect
No-one sees through her glamour.
I was actually musing more than thinking of an actual person. Esoterically, do you think there is a person/character who will see her glamour yet see what is the truth, versus seeing what they want to see...
Aww, I favored the voice over format better because there was mystery and legend behind your identity and not just another TH-camr in their room with poor acoustics.
I think he could still do a bit of work merging the two.

@@deliardd tbh, I'm not sure I would do it quite like that. If I were Quinn, I'd bring back the old style of openings that he did, with the logo, music, and a brief interlude into the subject of the video, and then transition into on-camera from there.

This sounds goofy but I wonder if this is true in real life. Our mind sees what it wants to see, it fills in the "gaps". If you want an example of this look up: "auditory illusions: hearing lyrics where there are none"
Melisandre"s ruby reminds me of the whisperjewel from "Dying of the Light", and "Nightflyers". Me suspects that it works in a similar manner. Same goes for other things such as a nice pair of boots.

I have a tinfoil theory that Mance actually DID die and that Rattleshirt was glamored to look like Mance, and not the other way around. One would be as difficult as the other when alone with Jon and Melisandre, right? And yet it would me much more difficult, I suspect, to glamor someone even as they turn into a crispy critter over a roaring fire. There's also the matter of R'hllor--the whole idea of sacrificing kings' blood to him was hers, right? So why would she set up a king-burning that she herself wanted to skip out on? It seems MORE likely to me that she actually killed Mance and convinced Rattleshirt to play Mance than that she killed Rattleshirt and convinced Mance to be Rattleshirt.
I really appreciate the format evolving, yet I would suggest to avoid the sort of self lip syncing when you use the face cam. It's really jarring. Rather much use a jump cut if you have to re-record something. I appreciate it's a learning process, but one thing I always loved about your channel was your narrating voice. Please don't compromise that!

Tori Amos was raped and she did a song about it that went "you and me and a gun at my back" which made me realise, in rape (etc) there are three things, the thing which means death (which can be just throttling hands but is often a weapon or bindings or both) which is why the women 'obey' the rapist en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Me_and_a_Gun (in the 80s, the defence of 'she'd had sex with other men and she liked it rough' often worked - you'd have a bit of a shock if you went back and read some of the newspaper articles, it would be like 'she was lying because she didn't resist and she'd had casual (ie unmarried) sex before and it's his word she liked it very violent against hers' that was quite normal).
It also reminds me of Bravo Two Zero, where the soldiers set off across the desert with, as luggage each, a big gun, loads of ammunition and a big plastic suitcase full of water. Which i realised made sense: with that amount of guns and ammo, you don't need money to go shopping, you can just take.

I'll use my Catholic upbringing as an example. Started me too early to know to ask questions, and as I grew older, all those illusions and beliefs were changed, questioned, defied, etc. It is all about power. That's a great conversation. talking about glamor, i do believe wasnt jon snow who got stabbed in the last book, and that actually melissandre used glamor on him, so the one who ot stabbed is not jon snow, but someone else, but jons conciousness is present, thats why he could sort of describe what happend, but was not in his physical body... maybe was tormund who got stabbed and melissandre glamor jon and tormund. so jon snow didnt died.
