Yeah D&D really dropped the ball on Arya... I dont think "badass ninja" is what GRRM is going for, I think it's more like an extremely troubled child who's been put through hell getting led down a darker and darker path who might be a psychopath.
Funny that, as he deals head on with all the creepy dark stuff in the books! But yes, there is - it's him, Quinn. Try " the Death of Winter" another vid of his.
Okay so I know this has nothing to do with this video but I just started reading Dune for the first time and I think it might be my favorite book. It is so good. Thank you for recommending it to me. 🙏
Just wait till you read it for about the third time. This is not a joke, and it likely won't happen soon. But after your 3rd, 4th+ readthrough, over the course of years of life and lessons, each chapter will unfold into an entirely new book. If you enjoy it, you'll enjoy it more as you read it again every other year or so, through your life.
I've been a big fan for a while and not much a youtube comment type but I just gotta say that you're killing it, and thank you for the amazing content! also you have a beautiful voice! Thank you, keep it up!!!
Also, what do you think when people say "demons" live in Mantharis? Do you think they are just people that are so wicked that the rest of the world considers them as demons? And what about the demons that live along the river Ash and Stygai? Are those wicked people too, a force of nature like the others and the children, some kind of unknown monster or creature, or maybe something else?
Hey man, I love your channel. I haven’t read GoT or Dune or anything that you cover, but it’s rad to hear a very knowledgeable person talk about their interests in great detail and with passion. Keep it up man, you rock.
Not everyone can narrate. You can narrate. Wow. Your voice and the tone you use. You got training on that? On top of your approach to videos, editing, and ideas. Wow!
Loved the pictures. Having a different depiction of these wonderful characters that is different from the actors in the series helps bring the books alive again after the trauma that was season eight. Thank you for this.
This was a very good video. Specially i liked your observation that not a single character had it perfect. Just like real life. Everyone is beaten by Life in the Story as well. Even Petyr Baelish who is playing so well the Game of Thrones had it served a bad deal in his Beginning... End is still unknown... But the guy is having the most fun as of now. But, the humiliation he must have experienced... The Breaking of his World View , Trust, at a tender age...
Since season 8 I have stayed away from all ASOIAF content just saw this and enjoyed it as I know u are looking further into the story then the idiots D&D
So glad you're back, Quinn! Loved this video. As always you offer such incredible views on the psyches of these characters. Arya seems like one of the most fascinating characters in the books. The show simplified her down so much, as it did with all the characters. Your passion is one of the reasons I want to continue with the books. Thanks for being such a terrific channel.
Glenn Geerlings totally I’m surprised he wasn’t brought up... in Varmyr’s chapter which is skin changer 101 to me they essentially paint a picture of an “abomination” which bran is 2/3 so far so he’s certainly on his way
Hey Quinn, wanted to clarify demons in Christian Theology (specifically East Catholic/Orthodox). In these theologies, a demon is just a form without matter (or just a soul) that uses thought (logissmoi) to assail the faithful with negative thoughts, emotions, etc... Check out the Ikon "The Ladder of Divine Ascent". It sort of captures all these aspects you mentioned.
Really interesting Video! I really like these deep analyses of the text. I honestly think your Videos get better and better in terms of quality even though they already started out as strong!
I love and hate videos like this. I love them because they really make you think about what is happening in the story and hate them because they remind me how the show completely ignored this aspect of the books.
Sir your playlists are very interesting. I am surprised how I could have missed your videos all these times. Today I found it when I searched Dune. Keep up the good work.
Outwardly, getting his face shoved into a brazier is explanation enough for The Hound's fear of fire. Just so, I've always wondered if The Hound heard a voice in the flames (like Varys) and inwardly, that's what truly haunts him. His "demon", if you would. There's a quote from The Hound, I can't recall it specifically, where he tells someone that they don't know how hot hell really is. That aroused my suspicions about something more having happened during Gregor's attack. I was hoping the show would've addressed this after The Hound accurately interpreted a fire vision, like maybe a multifaceted scene where we see The Hound reading the flames from Thoros and Beric's perspective where they hear the flames crackling, then from The Hound's perspective where the hissing flames is actually a voice speaking to him, to be followed later w/a confession to Thoros about hearing the flames speak as a child, but no😪.
You could say that fear of fire puts him on the side of ice and makes him susceptible to manipulation by the Night King (if he was the source of the vision of the arrowhead mountain)
I asked what opinion did you have about demons in one of your live streams over a year ago, bur sadly I think you didn't read my comment. But now I'm glad to finally know what you think about them! Thanks for the video.
Superb editing on this one. Would love to see you go more in depth on characters' inner demons in a podcast or something. For something as integral to the way GRRM tells the story, I feel like people generally don't put enough emphasis on just how pervasive inner demons are throughout the books.
Man I really enjoy your content, been following since I had watched your videos on dune one of my favoriate videos. As a fan of your channel, could you perhaps as well consider exploring into different cultural monsters or legends? Considering how well written and voice acted, I would love to hear you talk about the wendigo or the fae, or hopefully maybe something I've never heard of before. In any regard, thank you for your content, its brought me and my friends much entertainment.
Thank you for mentioning Cersei's demons - one theme I see is the damaged people who are or were motherless children - especially motherless girls. (I see Arya, Sansa, Cersei and even Shireen as motherless girls.)
Quinn: "Demon... What images are conjured in your mind when you. hear that word?" Me: *Flashbacks of Demons in Doom 2016, Daemons in Warhammer, and Event Horizon* "... Uhhh, horrible ones?"
One of the funniest passages I ever read was about demons, in a book by Roger Zelazny, Lord of Light,, I believe.. It went something like: They were not demons in the classical sense, which is to say, supernatural creatures of enormous power and malefic intent. They weren't supernatural.
a book i really really want to read that doesn't exist is one with all the muslim stories but not in weird oldy worldy english nor for children and not the actual koran, because i'm too lazy, so i can understand all the stories like about spiders and the seven sleepers and stuff
Josephine Winter The closest you might get is an updated translation of the 1001 Arabian nights. It’s unfortunate because there’s a lot in Islamic mythology stories about the prophet, Most of them are in hadith [stories about the prophet and his companions]. In countries like India, Pakistan, Morocco, Iran, Turkey, etc. there are countless folklore stories of local Sufi Saints like Al Khadiir ( The Green Man). Fortunately all of it is still largely untranslated.
Another great video! Just a point about the Lhazareen and Dothraki and how they might view sleeping with demons. When the witches originally danced and slept with demons they were originally based on nature spirits (specifically of the gods Pan/Dionysus/Bacchus) and this is where the classic form of Satan comes from and this changed a witch from a woman closely related to nature and therefore frightening in their power but linked to nature, under Christianity this changed to someone who appealed to a 'false god' and therefore someone to be persecuted. Christian theology also disagrees with the use of sex to gain power. Often traditional witches would work in traditional medicine and midwifery (like Mirri Maz Dur) and this could mean the Dothraki fear Mirri's demons not as an evil force as such but as a strong natural one, that can allow an old sheep woman to be on a par with or even more powerful than them Equally, like the Others and ice, the demons of Valyria may be nature demons of fire. Not malevolent but neutral and still incompatible with life The humans of ASOIAF may also contain within them demons that are primal natural spirits. The characters either control these demons or let the demons control them. It could be that magic is linked to demons and that the more powerful someone is magically the more demons they invite into them (like traditional witches but in a less sexual, more metaphorical way). This might explain why Bran has to be continually reminded to not spend so much time in Summer, there is a difference between his basic wants: feeling safe, feeling fed (which he can achieve through Summer) and his actual needs: to keep his physical body safe and fed. The more powerful Bran becomes the less he seems to care and the less himself he becomes. This can be seen to a lesser extent in Arya as well. Trading humanity for power

I look forward to the day when we’ll get long form videos discussing the intricacies of The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring. By then, we’ll all be elderly and unable to remember our own names. In other words, George Martin seems determined not to finish.
Yeah D&D really dropped the ball on Arya... I dont think "badass ninja" is what GRRM is going for, I think it's more like an extremely troubled child who's been put through hell getting led down a darker and darker path who might be a psychopath.
My personal idea of her character arc is it's about her personal identity, and her only way out of her path is to come to terms on what that means.
I think she is only retaining her identity until she can claim the names she’s purchased with it; her identity will be payment in the end.
she didnt train to use swords, kill people and become faceless in the book?
@@lotsapoppa994 d&d celebrate it as badass girl power while GRRM doesnt

There's something wholesome about this channel. Love this guy's passion. Keep it up!
I really love his passion too and it shows it's nice to see people actually doing what they like
I love this channel so much. He's a beautiful soul man. He just enjoys fiction so much.
Funny that, as he deals head on with all the creepy dark stuff in the books!

Sir, you h ave been sorely missed.
I like that you went back to putting pictures in your video!
Me too. Nice subtle touch that makes a big difference
You are the fan that every novelist dreams to have!
Don’t forget the alleged demons in Hardhome. Also in the subtitles during the episode where Mirri Maz Dur resurrects Drogo it says: Demon Shrieking
Damn, I never thought like that of the subtitles before.
Really? Very interesting!
Okay so I know this has nothing to do with this video but I just started reading Dune for the first time and I think it might be my favorite book. It is so good. Thank you for recommending it to me. 🙏
You'll be primed for the movie coming next year 😁👍

See? Demons are real!
sorry wrong thread.
You’re the only man I’ve seen under 50 that make that hat look good
After reading GRRM’s work I get extra attentive when I read or hear the word Others. May the Others take this habit.
The Children and the Others always reminded me of the Seelie and Unseelie courts of Faery.
They're very fairy like. Especially The Children.
Have you read the Meredith Gentry series?

Would love to see you do a video on Stannis. The rightful heir, the one true king of the seven kingdoms.
Seconded.
I really love the music playing in the background

Great job as usual, Quinn.
All characters have their demons...
Except Hodor.
He carries his on his back.
Bran is technically his demon. Taking possession of Hodors body.
His demon is that for most of his life, he knows how he will die, retreating to being a simpleton to handle it.
