Worth noting, before the actual Issue #1 released, there was a 4-issue Sonic miniseries produced by Archie that established backstory that is in no way canon any longer, but also featured a version of their history where Robotnik and Sonic were both raised by Uncle Chuck and lived together as children. It was super weird.

@@SurisVidya look up the Archie Original Sonic miniseries issues #0-3. They're a trip, I assure you. All of that canon was written out entirely later on, but it makes some of the earlier comics make more sense I think.

@@SurisVidya Yes there is the original Archie Sonic 4 issue mini series that released in 1992. Its actually on Mega collection plus.
And while not entirely canon a lot of its elements are from being referenced in latter flash back issues, over elements from it returning (like the inciting incident of the Tails Mini series is a direct sequel to one of the original miniseries stories, Rotor's submarine also originates from there, Sally still being blond there is referenced twice in the main book ones as a joke early one and latter again with a more serious explanation that chemicals from Robotniks factories keep messing up her fur color and it took her forever to wash it all out)
The only 2 major things that didn't do the cut to the main series was a massive change to the crown of Acorn and the idea that Sonic joined the Freedom fighters first when he was already a teen rather than since he was a young child as seen in the many Sonic Kids specials.
I was actually surprised you didn't mentioned it but that explains it.
I initially thought the character you didn't recognize might have been a Prince Valiant parody based on Sonic's "valiant" pun. But it's actually Magnus, the Robot Fighter, who was being published by Valiant Comic at the time. Regardless a weirdly spesific pull.
I always preferred the STC comics... and yes I am British... I kinda thought the American comic was very weird... and STC had Super Sonic as an evil alter ego.
Though over all I'd say STC art is more consistently good. I think someone from judge dread worked on it?
I also remember the Chaotics lived in the special Zone and was lead by Vector. They were thr defenders there or something. Which I think is more interesting then what the games are currently doing with them.
Also Robotnick was far more... consistently sinister in STC... he felt far more evil and threatening. He really was persistent in trying to hunt down the Emerald Hill folk. Also Brutus was a neat villain. Very Doctor Doom like to me.

I don't want to know the details, but... which issue has the _other_ "Robotnik loves Sally" moment? ._. I just want to know how many issues I'll have to go through.
My thought is that the great forest grows at an amazingly fast rate, and it's choking the world, and Robotnik is just trying to stop it from choking the world!
The great forest sounds like a pyromaniacs wet dream one day you light the forest on fire and then you go about your business go to sleep wake up go back to the forest and start another forest fire seven days a week every morning first thing. Also that would be a very effective and efficient way to cause global warming single handed by an individual on what ever plant The Great Forest is on.

I had sort of the opposite experience with the Archie Comics - I heard of them due to all the weird things they had (the romantic drama, the N%%i Echidnas, the in-universe reboot and other miscellaneous oddities) and one day I finally "snapped" - I decided to get into them, starting from the very beginning, similar to you. And while I had a bit of a rough time starting it, once I turned to MegaBeatMan and his reviews of each issue, I got absolutely sucked in. I had suprising amount of fun "reading" (if you can call it that) those early issues, especially considering that earlier I heard about how much of an unfunny slog they are. I _did_ however get sick of them after rewatching them for the 50th time (because MegaBeatMan didn't necessarily review episodes in order - he tended to jump around and as such, there were a lot of "holes" in the playlist, and I refused to skip issues). I eventually got sick of waiting and started watching Charriii5's streams where he reads the comics. Today, I'm in the 40s of the issues and have just started getting into the ridiculous Knuckles comics. :)
Funnily enough, while you initially believed the Sonic comics to be canon to the games, I for the longest time thought the same about the Archie _Mega Man_ comics. I thought they were describing what _really_ happened during those games, like a revision of old lore (as it was pretty simple back then). It wasn't until later when I found out they weren't canon.
_(side note: it was also through Mega Man - or MMKB, the Mega Man wiki, rather - that I found out about the Archie Sonic comics. "Worlds Collide"! Too bad I had absolutely _*_zero_*_ clue who all those funny animal characters were 😅)_

@@JDxY-2 well I read everything except for the Knuckles spin off. You could just read the main book but if you want a more complete experience you should read basically everything. As of numbers I have no idea how many issues there were but definitely A LOT. I advice that if you want to read Archie Sonic you should just start doing it while keeping an eye out for the one offs and stuff like that.
