Flynn himself said to NOT start on issue 160. Instead (if you want something like that), you start 130 when Sonic returns from space after few months of absence. That way 1) you're introduced to everyone as Sonic re-meets them. 2) Yes, you will see some terrible stories. But since Ian is all about closing certain plotlines you will know about Fiona, Mogul, XYL , ADAM, M, Tommy, Finitevus, Evil Sonic, Tails Chosen One Prophecy, Shadow working for Eggman and more. That's A LOT ot context to get better idea what's happening in early Ian issues. 3) You get to see how much better things got.
As someone who just finished reading every single issue of Archie Sonic this is absolutely one of the best videos I've seen on the topic. It's so refreshing to see someone who doesn't just immediately dismiss and shit on anything not written by Ian Flynn, and instead accepts its faults while still acknowledging its merits. Something I've been working on is a reading list that recommends specific stories to skip to make the series less intimidating, as there's so many filler stories that make the series seem far more intimidating than it really is. On my spare time I recently started reading the Archie comics, (Started where story starts to to pick up) i'm going by issues released in chronological order so i'm in i believe knuckles comic issue 4 right now. But like the very reason i'm reading it, and some of my friends called me a mad man doing it, its like I want to see it without any bias on what was the insanity. Like I am just very curious on wanting to know the insanity with my own eyes, learning the shift from penders to flynn and all that.

Sonic fan communities were almost exclusively for the comic, with many people treating it as the true canon of the series. If you ask me, there are two main reasons for this: 1. Most of the story material for the games was not released outside of Japan. 2. There was a huge gap between story relevant games. There were 5 years between Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic Adventure, practically an eternity to a young fan. So what changed? Well, first of all, the Adventure games put more emphasis on story and it basically became impossible for Sega of America to keep their own separate continuity anymore. Shortly after that, Sonic went multi-platform and brought in a huge crowd of new fans that didn't have any attachment to any of the comic books. Then Sonic X came along to introduce a new generation to Sonic the same way that the early 90's cartoons had. There wasn't really much interest for the new fans to pick up a comic book that barely resembled the games they liked at that point.

it's simple sega gave archie writers all freedom for their stories but after the lawsuit they only allow certain stuff in idw so ian can only do so much like he isn't allow to use team hooligan mighty and ray in mordan books
Pre Ian Flynn comics if you want weird stupid shit that sometimes is genuinely fantastic Post Ian Flynn if you want a consistently great comic Post reboot if you want a good comic that doesn’t have all the lore and history of anything prior and is easier to get into without getting confused

THANK YOU! This is exactly what I had been looking for! I have been interested in getting into the Sonic comics for years, but Archie always felt too daunting for me. Now that I'm as good as caught up with IDW, I really want to give Archie another try, as I've really enjoyed Ian Flynn's work both in Frontiers and IDW. I had tried reading a bit of Universe before and really liked it, though the storyline was rather confusing to me. No wonder if it's a comic meant to be read alongside of another comic. I think I'll start at #160 (or maybe #130 like I've seen some comments say is better) and go from there, as I have a general understanding of the main conflict between the Freedom Fighters and Eggman through having watched a chunk of the SATAM series. Can't wait to finally read about characters like Nicole, Scourge and Eclipse who I've been hearing so much of!
This video is a lifesaver! I always hoped the comic was worth starting from issue one but it always seemed so scary. However this video made it seem all the more worthwhile, I can’t wait to hit the books! 📚
Honestly, I hope that some of the sonic live action movies will adapt storylines from the Archie comics if they want to expand on the lore and introduce new characters for those who haven’t read the comics completely or heard of them.
The funniest realization was CoD Zombies Chronicles has same "American Comic Book Energy" as Archie Sonic Comic, with how expansive the whole multiverse is... If you can get through Donald Duck comics, Marvel Comics, DC comics, or CoD Zombies Aether Storyline, you get a pretty hefty headstart on this insanity...

I followed the comic from the Mecha Madness Special all the way to the end. I missed a few issues here and there but aside from some of the last Knuckles issues (I seem to be one of the biggest fans of that series) my collection is complete now.. I was super excited because I loved the SatAM series and seeing the characters from it on the cover showed that this was my Sonic. It was my favorite comic as a child because it just kept going as I grew up throughout the years. And while not all of it worked, I honestly feel that most of the pre-160 stories were good if not great. Sadly, after the universe got reset in issue 252 I felt that the comic lost its heart. Everything felt so unengaging compared to what came before. The only post-252 issues I liked was the crossover Worlds Unite which was awesome. But hey, 200+ good issues makes the pre-reboot series still very enjoyable.
I need to find a comic shop that sells Archie Sonic back issues, but well, that's probably not possible. And hey, if some other fandoms have taught me anything (Including this very fandom, Archie or otherwise), maybe I'd be able to enjoy those warts more than others, or might not get a kick out of those people praise.
If it helps anything, the Unleashed Saga in the reboot DOES get finished, and the following issues can act as a sort of epilogue for the reboot itself.

Well, I already read the series online even though I really miss the design for it why is modern Sonic comics every other character looks like a Sonic forces knock off character or is that just a me problem?
Sage snuff out all the depth and to the point every character has only the surface lever most obvious trait. All real danger intensely in I.D.W. is gone. Also the story is just slow. Bones lessing, is no off panels, and the same character summery takes up a whole page and is the exact same cut out image from a first-time apparats with nothing new to say.
When's the IDW overview video? SMH, me and my crab, Pablo, can't gurgle down chug jugs and play Subway Surfers to you talking about some dusty old comics nobody will ever read. >:[
tbh sally and the freedom fighters where W characters, but if you showed me an image of them with me having no prior knowledge to sonic the hedgehog, I would have no clue who they are. That’s how strange the designs are💀 I mean that one guy who worked on some Archie art who notoriously took all the Archie characters had the strangest art and he made vector this weird muscle man…💀
If you’re referring to that rather infamous panel of Vector dancing with a swan, Ken actually didn’t draw that, he only wrote the issue. Also Ken didn’t take ‘all of them’, a chunk of comic characters were not owned by him and were just casualties of the reboot.

I read Knuckles when I was younger because the amount of Sonic issues there was back then was overwhelming and not in my budget to collecting.
I always feel like Ian’s Archie run is much better than his IDW run. Makes me wonder what happened.
I think it's pretty obvious. Ian had a lot more freedom working on Archie compared to IDW and frontiers which restricted him via Sega mandates
IDW Sonic has the burden of being "canon" to the Sega games. So Ian can't really do much of anything.
