The German F4s were mostly F4F. Basically simplified F4E variants because of budget constrains and because they bought it as in interim solution as an interceptor. It was only later on when the F variants were upgraded, which got them on par with the E variant. For example, no sparrows and no mavericks early on. They upgraded the maverick capability later on. The F4 then served for more than 40 years in the Luftwaffe.
@@slowhornet4802the ICE was very good in comparison to the original F (it also had "less" smoky engines), it just came way too late, when others, who had F-15s were talking about F-22s 😂

My dad was on the Saratoga during Vietnam. He always talked about the phantoms. He said that planes would take off and land 24 hrs a day and you would never know below decks. But you knew when the phantoms were spooling up to launch. Powerful machines.
Love seeing the F4. My father served 2 tours in Vietnam aboard the USS America and was an aircraft engine mechanic. He had some awesome stories about the F4.
Dude so sweet. The detail is insane. They did a really good job. I just bought a Su 33, because it was cheap lol. I should be flying tonight I finally got all my stuff lol.
My dad was an F-4 WSO in JG 74 which is the squadron your skin is from. The only differences is that most F-4s there were actually grey and that they did carry AMRAAMs. Also there was a Me-262 production plant and an airbase close to the current JG airbase which is the reason we still find a lot of WW2 bombs.
Ya gotta love the F-4s man. They were chunky and heavy, but they did their thing, and they did it *well*. Beautiful production from McDonnell Douglas for sure
Later models of the F-4E were fitted with a Target Identifier System, Electro-Optical, on the starboard wing, above the inboard pylon. This provided the WSO with a means for identifying enemy aircraft, and ground targets, beyond normal visual range, allowing more freedom in the use of Sparrow missiles. But it could also be used to acquire ground targets for electro-optically guided weapons like the Maverick or GBU-10.
I grew up south of Wittmund Air Base (Home of the last German phantoms until 2013) and saw Phantoms nearly everyday for the first 20 years of my life! I’m so incredibly excited to finally have a proper Phantom in a flight sim. I will live in my sim for the few days after release😅
"I have ample speed. I am going to take straight into the veridical. It's what the F4 likes..." I love those short little call outs! I really liked this one. I loved the F4 Phantom II! It was used by all branches!
I remember those from my childhood in a village 50 km west of the German-German border. The Phantom looked like a suspiciously stable brick in the air that was getting bigger, and then things got really loud really quickly. Scary and awesome. Always liked them, though, and was more afraid of the local farm tractors as they posted a far greater threat.
LOL, thought that as well, the Local Farmers with the Tractors where the "real" Thread instead of the Russian´s next Door.....Watching from a Bicycle one Time nearly got me killed because we both watched the flying Brick!🤣
Gotta say this plane is an absolute beauty of a plane! Especially as someone who lives near one of those airfields who had F4's until 2013 and experiencing them flying and taking of during my childhood, it's really nice to find them again in DCS 11 years later. Really considering buying the F4 to relive a main part of my childhood tbh
Another exceptional mission/video, GS. I really enjoy reading your videos' comments as well. You have a very appreciative and enlightened following! I searched to see if anyone else mentioned this and didn't see it, so I'll ask even though I got here late: I think I recall the F-4 Phantom was nicknamed "The Lead Sled or just "The Sled." 8:24 the German Airforce also used an advanced Version of the Aim-9B, the Aim-9B FGW.2 or Aim-9F. Also the F-4F was able to carry the Aim-9L, so there was no need to only use the Aim-9B
I remember watching a documentary on dogfights over Vietnam, and I distinctly remember the pilots saying they had to use the vertical to fight the MIG-21’s because they just were not maneuverable enough in the turn fight.
Nice to see the Rhino flying. Worked a lot with the german F-4s, espacially with the JaboG 36 and JG 71 during GCI with the airforce in the 80´s. But the german airforce flew the F-4 F version not the F-4E. F-4F was not that capable as the E version until we got the ICE Update. But real cool flying model
As the Eurofighter Typhoon was expected to be in protracted development the Luftwaffe put their Phantoms through an update ICE program as an interim, put simply they fitted Hornet radars and made them AMRAAM capable. Best upgrade of the Phantom in the universe.
German Pilots were extremely good dogfighters they were trained excellent in that role, after upgrading the F-4F during the 90s to the ICE (improved Combat Efficency) standard they then were able to use AIM-120s.
Awesome video and gameplay. I grew up watching the Luftwaffe training with their Panavia Tornados when I visited my grandmas place in North Germany - they also flew Mach 1+ there and I still know how I hold my ears when I was small and the windows shaked. I'm old enough to remember seeing Luftwaffe F-4s all over the American Southwest when they had them stationed at Holloman AFB. they would send one to all the local air shows and tear up the sky.
Hey GS, for something completely different, Eagle Dynamics needs to come out with a livery for the F-16 like the Viper Demonstration Team is using this year. It goes back to the first F-16’s to roll off the assembly line. I remember seeing them back then.

German post ww2 weapons ordering is mostly just cutting budget wherever they could even if hindered the performance of what they were buying by a lot
