Bring three gun pods, employ two of them. Almost commit fox-4 (read: lithobraking) by way of experimental rudder-controlled gun dispersion technique (DOD approved). Jettison gun pods into low earth orbit (to be recovered later by Gemini crew). Enter furball (some of that pilot shit). Egress at lawnmower altitude. 7/10 absolutely fantastic mission. Remember next time that landing the plane is completely optional. Welcome to floggit, captain.
From my real world 1980s experience with the F-4E, we didn’t use the SUU-16 20mm gun pod at all. We didn’t even do familiarization training. It wasn’t in our mission profile at that point. The 20mm pods were a C and D model thing. We did have the 30mm GPU-5 and when we did fly them we had them centerline for ground attack. One time we put them on the centerline and both inboards. Let’s just say the one time testing was enough to know... one on the centerline was enough. 🤣 Also, the Phantom is most happy over 400kts and under angels 20.
I worked on E-models in the early 80s, and our MSgt had spent a long time working on them by then. He said that it was possible - technically - to put at least FIVE of those pods on an F-4E. You had to do some hotwiring to get them to fire simultaneously, but it had been done as a test. Apparently, the pilot had some Words about flying the plane with all pods + the centerline going at once, and it was never tried again. (...and you could have put a sixth one on...) The same MSgt also mentioned that they'd done a hotrod version of the F-4 once, with modified engines and a lot of aerodynamic tweaking (including a radome swap for a metal one) and ran it up to almost Mach 3 - for a few seconds. Again, never tried again.
So you mean to tell me I forget where my M4 is for like half a day and the Post gets shutdown, but air force just dumps 3 gunpods over enemy territory?
The pilot crashes his jet: "Don't worry Sir, we'll get you another". The Tanker bends his main gun barrel "Don't worry Sir, we'll get that fixed". The grunt loses his bush hat "Charge that man!"
I was thinking: Damn, the video is smooth! I want his computer specs. “Are we going in at treetop level?” “No, at tree-TRUNK level!” “We’re going in at prairie-dog level!” I don’t even fly the Huey that low at 110 knots! 😂 He literally can’t wait to get a Buccaneer in DCS.
F-5E only has two rather obsolete 20MMs, it would actually make sense to sling a SUU-23 underneath it Except that uses up one of its very few hard points lol
Aussies ordered the F-111C in early 1960s, and we were awaiting for delivery due in 1968, but due to the F-111 wings departing in flight on the early models, along with an extended wait for rectification the US offered a loan of up to a few squadrons worth of new F-4E Phantoms into the mid 1970s. The Aussies were so impressed with the Phantom, that an official request by the RAAF to the current political government was to keep the Phantoms with the new F-111C. I heard it was a very loud performer at air-shows, wish I could of seen one when I was very young kid but this DCS simulator is as close as you can get.......unbelievable creativity in this sim.
I’ve been fortunate enough to see four operators of Phantoms, 3 of them flying. The Luftwaffe, USAF and Turkish AF were the flying operators, with the last one being RAF, in a museum. You would never forget the smoke.
Man, that was a hell of a fight to stay alive, and it just goes to show you, DO NOT GIVE UP! You got to go home to fight another day, and the MIG 21 did not!
The F-4 is the jet I used to see as a kid, but didn't see them much when I was in the USAF. Guard and Reserve units flew them. When I was a young Airman, I used to hear the older guys talk about duct taping AAA damaged F-4's in Vietnam and they just kept flying.
That was easily one of your most epic and cinematic dogfights in a while! I too really thought that Mig-21 was going to be the end of you. The level of anxiety I had while you were flying UNDER tree-top level while setting up the aircraft...Jester isn't the only one that needs a new pair of shorts when he lands!
When I was a kid, the local Air National Guard flew F-4s out of Bradley. My dad would take me to the airport and we'd watch them do touch and go's, then land and deploy the chute... really amazing to watch. Later that guard unit changed to A-10s which were impressive in their own way, and now I think it's converted to an Army National Guard unit with a couple of Chinooks.
Spicy furball! In other news, I was watching a Task & Purpose video yesterday about the F-22 upgrades they're planning and saw that he used footage from GS as some b-roll. Neat!
I don't think I noticed it in other fighters, but at least in the F-4 it's so cool to see a fast jet being flown with analog knobs, and an analog timer for your bombs. That was the first real thing I noticed in the cockpit when you started flying it!
In Vietnam the original F-4Cs did not have an internal gun. The 366th Tactical Fighter Wing got the idea to use a centerline 20mm gun pod in A-A mode, and they scored several MiG kills that way. The squadron got the nickname "The DaNang Gunfighters" as a result. I would really like to see you do a video to replicate this, using the 20mm centerline pod in A-A use instead of the internal F-4E gun. I'm sure the aiming will be more challenging and the drag of the pod won't help either. I plan to do this after I pick up the DCS F-4E myself.
i'm liking the intros more and more! that shot with the canopy closing was a really nice touch! and since i almost always watch to the end, i really like landings for some reason, gives a feeling of relief the plane got home safely 🙂
I was wondering how many gun pods you could carry! A little disappointed you didn't use the gun pods in A2A mode! ;) Can you please demonstrate the bomblet dispensers. (The pods that drop hundreds of mini-bombs out the rear.)
That Fishbed at the end had me genuinely tense. Your POV of the NOE ingress made me kinda uncomfortable, too, but damn, that last fight, especially with Jester shitting enough bricks to build a castle the whole time...
As soon as F4 pilots figure out to take the fight into vertical MiGs are done. Don't do circle fights and scissors against a MiG-21, always go for a high yo-yo to stay behind him but keep your energy up. Thank me later.
I was stationed in Misawa, JN back when the JASDF still flew the F4 and those planes are LOUD! But, so freaking cool to see in flight. It just LOOKS powerful
Wow. Although a favorite of mine, I always pictured the Mig 21 as a low maneuverable missile delivery system. Seems it can hold it's own in a dogfight too. Impressive fight, that was really tense!
Those gun pods violated those ground targets 😂 but man that mig21 was scary, tryna dodge him and the AAA Wizzing by at the same time, man ive never seen anyone drive the phantom like that 🔥

You should consider the MIG Killers campaign by Reflected Simulations when it releases. It's a course meant to emulate the TOPGUN School during Nam and how Navy pilots learned how to properly dogfight in the Phantom.
I remember reading somewhere that there was a group (can’t remember if it was just a flight or a larger number) of F4s that flew with three gun pods doing CAS and ground attack, calling themselves the Laredo Highway Patrol. Don’t know how much truth there was to it though.
GS:"F-4E Phantom GUNPODS & Mig-21 Furball Dogfight" ME: At last! Take that, commie Mig-21s! GS: "I'm dropping the gunpods to save weight..." ME: Wait, WHAT..?
Man, this was the most thrilling DCS chase I've seen in a minute! The tracers audibly whipping by you on either side close to the end was wild. Do you have cinematic cuts of your videos anywhere, like Patreon or something? I tell ya what, I watch every one of these vids put out and it's been a min since I heard a bit of panic in that voice. lol Well done getting out of that last pursuit bud.
Just a minute or two before 13:34 I started thinking "Get the heck out of there before the enemy gets really pissed off and reacts more forcefully to your presence and actions". Seems like we have similar thoughts.
I heard that once, the JASDF spent an inordinate amount of time trying to find some loose rounds that fell out of a helicopter on a training mission. Forget about dropping three multi-million dollar gun pods!!

GS read the comments the past couple of days and said, "You guys want guns? Fine. May I introduce the F-4 Phantom gunship, my dudes!"
