The question the interviewer asked was looking for a response like that or saying "yes, he is the new Jobs". I think Bill Gates gave a great answer and was right to acknowledge that the question is way over simplified.

I am of an age and was always a tech Geek, I remember Bill presented someone else's software/OS to IBM and that became the IBM PC OS guaranteeing Microsofts success as any corporate IT or purchasing officer would always be safe buying IBM/Big Blue products.
There actually were far better OS's around such as DR DOS (Digital Research) which was a native multitasking OS unlike the primitive MS DOS.
Office programs became hugely important and Lotus came out with the spreadsheet which MS tried unsuccessfully to duplicate so the Microsoft mantra was DOS isn't finished until Lotus won't go. MS had to purchase a small startup whose product was excell, also MS was hopeless with databases especially relational and did not have a competitive product, dBase was king with an excellent growing competitor that had an excellent relational database FoxBase , MS bought it out and gradually morphed Access into the excellent Foxbase product under the MS Access brand. The same story with the Word processor etc.
So Bill did not invent or develop much in fact copied Windows off Apple after saying Graphical interface's and mice were hopeless and a waste of time.

The cars, solar panels, power walls, etc SpaceX all the stuff made is very well engineered. Really creating good shit! The sheer volume of stuff also is very impressive.
Maybe look up Elons history, he sold his first software at age 12, ZIP2 was his work, even PayPal was largely his work with many patents along the way. Elon had to teach himself Rocket science and engineering. Elons Degrees are in Physics and Economics and he is a genius software engineer.

For as well read as Bill seems to be it seems he has overlooked that Tesla is not an automotive company, its a tech company first and foremost and part of that is automotive and here is the key, an energy company. The cars batteries will feed into the grid and auto bidding software will turn peoples vehicles into micro utilities.

I think Bill is 100% right. Both amazing brilliant visionaries in the tech space, yes. But thats where the big similarities stop. Elon is first and foremost an engineer and physics guy who is buried in every detail of the companies he runs and the products he sells. Steve Jobs was first and foremost a salesman & businessman, and a damn good one. Jobs was great at the big picture, the marketing, the sales pitch, and hiring great engineers and designers. Thats why Jobs had Wozniak. Elon is more like Wozniak, and to be honest, he could really use someone to help handle the business and sales side for him, more visibly, at each of his companies. Gwynne Shotwell seems to be doing a great job at running SpaceX day to day. He needs that trusted person at Tesla too.
Except Musk seems to be thriving in several world class technologies.

You should read his biography by Walter Isaacson - he was very difficult and was very mean to some people. The general consensus was he was not a nice guy. Bill Gates have literally saved millions of live through his donation to build medical and educational facilities in the third world. On top of that he is on the forefront of research of deadly diseases like Malaria and clean energy through his contributions. Heck he have pledged to donate 95-99% of his wealth to charity once his gone. Regardless of what he id to get to be a billionaire (I know of his biography, he'd didn't do much damage at all) he is good person.

Almost no one put their feet on spaceship of Elon Musk except some astronauts. Musk still has powerful opponents in car industry and space industry (such as Blue Origin)

Don't forget that car batteries are also high polluters and they cost as much as 1/4 of the total price of the car you're buying which is a big deal when they fail after 5 to 7 years of usage. That will possible change with the new solid state batteries being developed by John B. Goodenough, but until then, it is what it is.

I haven’t heard any comparisons between Steve and Elon, just between Elon and Tony Stark (which I feel is more accurate) and I agree with Bill, they have different approaches and at the end are completely different people.
Comparing Elon with Steve Jobs is a incredible insult to Elon, Steve was a cutthroat and Elon is willing to gamble his fortune to help the planet
Steve focused on what he was good at while Elon pretends he's good at everything
