- This EPIC Challenge just KILLED The ELECTRIC CAR forEVer!! John O'Groats to Lands End EV vs DIESEL! Burn in HELL EV!! In an era where we are all having Electric Cars shoved down our throats and being given no choice but to purchase and EV we thought it was time we put the Electric Vehicle to the test and show what a totally ridiculous idea it is as a mode of transport. So we set off from John O'Groats in an Electric Car and a Diesel car to see how each of them handle a long journey and also who has the least stress and financial implications. Follow the MacMaster in this EPIC journey through the UK in his Porsche Taycan Electric Car. Also head over to Geoff Buys Cars and see his experience in his Diesel BMW.

My entire TH-cam consumption for the last three days has been Lee and Geoff. Best collaboration ever. brilliant stuff all of it.
I think EV's are going to bankrupt the car manufacturers and the Banksters and their Governments and us.
I think they are now realising it. But because the government's are holding them to ransom and forcing them to become net zero they have to bring out new hideous looking creations.
Definitely us. Unless you're a lottery winner who could stomach the horrendous losses, yet the EVangelists continue saying that they save money. Unbelievably blinkered.
It will bankrupt those who run there businesses badly and produce poor EV's.
And rightly so.
Banksters create money from thin air and they use that power in order to enslave the people. A slave has not the right of unlimited mobility and therefore a car is of no use
It's to force as many of us off the road onto public transport as they know most people won't be able to afford and run an electric car.

How anyone could think this was ever going to be close I cannot understand. Lee has to stop several times to charge up whereas Geoff has only got to stop once.
He would have beaten you in his grandma's Morris Minor, time and cost.

A gas station with 8 pumps can recharge 48 cars in an hour. A charging station with 8 charging points can charge 8 EV's in an hour. So however many gas pumps we have at the moment, we need 6 times more EV charging points to keep up .
And 3 more nuclear power stations.

Given that EV average range is 200 miles and diesels are good for more than twice that, there need to be 12 times as many EV chargers…
We've mentioned previously that the EV dream is about control and this highlights it,it's not that the powers that be don't want us driving internal combustion vehicles, they don't want us driving at all. It's a classic "bait and switch" offer great incentives until enough people take it up, then switch,charging costs go up,road tax exemption ends, etc. You're probably aware that all new home chargers now by law have to allow the grid remote access and control, so the scenario you encountered with ionity not have enough grid capacity would mean that the grid could lock out your charger until they see fit...control,control,control 🤬
The only EV that are fun are the one's you see at fairgrounds. They have unlimited electric power and if you crash into another one it doesn't instantly write it off.
Poor Lee such a demoralizing journey that really was , even getting there was a challenge in itself. 👏👏👏
I cannot fathom who buys these really expensive supposedly long range EVs to suffer this amount of hassle (which i have experienced first hand this week trying to drive my e-Up to London and back in a day - 200 mile round trip). Surely an expensive large car like this plays the role of main car in household? But how can it when it's so compromised?!
The Porsche Taycan is not a long range EV. Its real world range is circa 220 miles. There are better, cheaper, longer range EVs around.
I can never get an EV, can't afford the coffee and chips.

Thank F**K, I am 63 , disabled and in terrible health. I WILL NEVER BUY A EV CAR ever! I don't fancy buying a car with a dodgy Chinese Battery, where there is even the slightest chance that my last moments involve burning to death because I don't have the physical ability to exit the car quickly enough.
As much as this trip proved painful for you, watching both yours and Geoffs side of the story has been top entertainment. Hope you’re recovering from the ordeal though!

The one thing that struck me was how preoccupied Lee was in trying to work out alternative strategies, taking into account distance, range and availability of unoccupied chargers.
Sure, all long journeys whatever the car should, so far as possible, be planned to be economical, but the EV seems to add many more variables.
This mental arithmetic must take a driver's attention off actually driving.
These things become the focus, when you should be able to just get in and drive. It takes freedom away from the driving experience.
Brilliant video. Have already watched Geoff's videos and really enjoying this one as well. One thing I find in your video over Geoffs, is "recharge anxiety" all the way almost. It may of caused the nosebleed.

'Charge up and catch up' more like. They say that we spend, on average, 30% of our life waiting...make that 60% for a person that owns an EV. Interesting journey Lee.

Petrol pumps can fuel 30 cars per hour, charging stations 2. Even if the grid could support it where would we get the space for 15 times as many refueling places as we currently have. EV is nonsense brought about by innumerate politicians.
The hub at the NEC M42 junction had 180 chargers.
I'm an ev driver with a Taycan but am not an EVangelist .... my next car will be a petrol hybrid or pure petrol ... the futures not electric

If there's not enough power capacity in the grid to charge up electric cars, isn't it FRAUDULENT to allow the sales of electric cars? Shouldn't it be banned, or at least suspended until the grid can catch up?
Unfortunately EVs are not meant to be practical or replace our existing cars , they are it would appear, another step in the direction of getting us out of cars full stop with the less affluent first to suffer.
Trudie Harrison who was a transport minister said two years ago we intend to move away from the outdated idea of "privately owned" vehicles. Note the word "private" .

Answer to your question- The national grid could not cope if we went all electric. We lost 3 nuclear power stations this year (Dungeness B, Hinkley Point B, Hunterston) and nothing has been added or will be in the near future.

I had an EV..id3 first edition. Big mistake. Had exactly the same issues on long journeys so sold it after 12 months and went back to diesel. And that was before electricity prices rocketed and when there were gewer EVs on the road.
When I first saw a ID3 in real, I tought it's a chinese fake or something. Did yours also have those hilarious grey-beige leather (?) seats which look like they're from a 90s KIA or Daewoo?
All these charging breaks are great for the coffee and junk food industries. Not so great for The NHS budget, though.
Imagine going to the gas station and having to wait an hour for them to fill up your tank. I'd go crazy and you have to do this every time you charge your car. Crazy
That would be awful. Fortunately it's not true for either type of car. Nothing crazy.
Imagine charging at home over night in a real EV with 300 to 400 mile range all full when you wake up...and then spending only 20 mins to put 80% back in the battery.No need to imagine my mentally challenged one, get a Tesla
Fortunately that's just your imagination, then. Now imagine the reality. Every day you come home in your EV, plug it in, and get on with life. In the morning it's full ready for action again. Never need to visit a fuel station of any sort, or spend more than seconds plugging your car in.
If you go on a long trip and have to use a public charger, you pick an ultra-rapid, and your car gets up to 80% (the optimum charge to minimise waiting time) in half an hour (less if it's an upmarket model), which is just nice time to go to the loo and have a snack and avoid driver fatigue.

I drove from FLorida to Hoboken NJ a few years back, I reckon I should try it in a Tesla.
Let's be honest EVs are only any use as a short distance commuter car hopeless for any journey much over 200 miles
Evs are not for everyone but we go to France 3 times a year in our etron, a trip of around 1500 miles and charging issues yet , to be sure the journey requires more planning I just repeat the same plans each time
I’ve done a 3k road trip around Europe in mine and it’s a dream
BTW charging to 100% unless you are at home / hotel is idiotic
@@timfielding5735 Road trips are fine if you are on holiday/relaxing and have not time pressure. Try having to drive 400+ miles to meet a deadline/for work etc. In the real world people don't always have the luxury of taking there time.
Glad to see you have your coat on when it was cold outside, but if you were too hot, you must have had the heating on in the car, which uses a lot of electricity. Turn the heating down or better still off all together and increase your range.
They introduce electric charging points but with no canopy to protect you from the rain .that's progress for you
When I was a kid I used to daydream about time travel and wondered whether we'd be able to do it when I grew up. Amazingly we can! Charge an EV and time slows down and seems to go backwards.

How many vehicles go through a busy fuel station per hour during the major traffic hours. Lets say it's 100 for arguments sake. That means that to replace petrol and diesel with electric charging points they will have to have at least 50 bays. I've based this on a average charge taking 1/2 an hour which is being generous - so 50 bays could process 100 electric cars in an hour. Add to that the tremendous amount of current that would be required to feed to the charging points and the tremendous drain on the grid during the day. It is just not going to happen. I would buy shares in Costa.
And to add to your portfolio, shares in big oil, as the likes of Shell, BP, Total and others are buying up EV charging networks faster that you can charge an EV.
That's why the UK is going backwards economically. Forcing all this inefficiency on the economy, forcing all government bodies to use them etc. for some religion is absolute madness. Meanwhile China was building 350 coal fires power stations two years ago (I haven't checked the recent figures) and Australia's massive coal exports went up 10% last financial year. Brits are never told all this eh. 🇭🇲
Exactly what you just said. My local Tesco (near a motorway junction) has 16 pumps, and a queue, 2-3 cars deep at every pump all day and night.
It takes me under 3 minutes to fill my car 70 litres, but let's be generous and say it takes and average of 5 minutes per customer, that means they are serving nearly 200 cars an hour, so double everything you said above

I have both a Tesla Model 3 Performance and a Porcshe Taycan 4S with the performance plus. From my experience you get the same range in both. The Taycan is a better and more luxury car. But EVs only work if you can charge from home and never need to use public chargers.
So, if you charge at home, avoid public charging structure, in order to enjoy an EV, the, we can conclude that, EVs are for people that drive within Town, just like macmaster says.

@@dayoadeosun1520 No, just that the majority of trips are done easily within the range or not much more than and that's all cheap. So what if there are a few more expensive trips? This is no different than cooking food at home and going to a restaurant or getting take away delivered once in a while. Same idea. If you didn't have a kitchen or fridge at home, you'd be eating out every night.
That said, a Tesla using exclusively Superchargers, i.e. public charging, can still work out at about the same price as diesel but the Taycan isn't a Tesla and the rest of public charging isn't Tesla Superchargers (which are about half the price).
Pick what works for the individual though, that's all that matters. For some either vehicle works best.
@@djtaylorutube Most trips that most people do are within the range your car can do with an overnight charge. I keep reading that all cars need an 800 mile range. But nobody drives all day without a break - its bladder anxiety that dictates my range, not the battery

Because we enjoyed our trip to a Switzerland a few months ago (effortless) in our Model Y, within a few days we had already booked up for Italy, Spring 2024 but to cure lack of road trip depression, are doing a quick trip to Brugges in a couple of weeks for a Christmas market. Apparently, none of this is possible.

And this doesn't yet include the tax that's on petrol/diesel. The government is too used to that income and will undoubtedly find a way to collect it from EV charging; then the costs will be eye-watering!

You had to stop twice before you got to the Lakes - he had to stop once on the entire trip. He was never going to lose on timing. Surprised at how much it cost you though.

Geof's few off 3 minute p155 breaks versus your 4 off up to an hour each, twiddle your thumbs waiting for some electrons, breaks. You never stood a chance time wise. Only question was cost. End result is frightening; for the EVangelists.
Just watching your video. Very interesting. Low charging is not a problem with the grid, the problem is how many chargers are trying to use and share a limited amount of power going into the charging station.
With a petrol or diesel car you can carry extra fuel with you
In my EV I carry a diesel generator and two cans of diesel on my passenger seat, with a lead to the charging port through the window, it gets a bit smoky inside the car but I have range for days 😂😂 sorry to ruin your comment, I do agree with it but I felt a bit silly 👍
Your nose bleed may be due to electromagnetic irritation. You are sitting right on top of a huge battery that has a lot of power in it. Be careful!
I read a post about someone wanting to travel in Canada between Calgary and Vancouver through the Rockies,in an EV !,and were asking about charging points ,the replies all said there was about 2 charging points in the whole 800/900 mile journey !
People on both sides argue about EV vs ICE cars, charging points, costs, planning your journey etc but I think there's one bug problem with EVs we are overlooking that doesn't actually involve the physical car itself. That's the electricity grid. There just isn't the capacity in the grid to charge millions of EVs even if we did have enough public chargers and charge points at home.
For the last two winters we have been warned of power brownouts and the possibility in winter if our houses being plunged into darkness due to electricity demands being virtually electricity generation capacity.
As a side note, where I work was recently told that our operations would need to be converted into a greener process to meet net zero targets. This change means using far more electricity than we currently do to eliminate chimney emissions. When we asked managers where we would get this extra electricity from they replied "The grid". To which we naturally asked "Have the grid been asked and if so, what did they say?". The reply was "Yes the grid has been asked and they say there's currently not the electricity generation capacity in the grid to feed those new demands.
Some people will say, "Oh but we are putting up wind turbines and solar farms all the time". Yes but we are also building thousands of new houses per year to home our ever increasing population. So that leaves us back at square one.
I believe 2030 being moved to 2035 on cars will keep moving back. The can will get kicked down the road as it finally dawns upon the politicians that with all good will, hey I want to live in a cleaner environment, but some things are just not achievable or at least not achievable as quick as people would like.
Your argument assumes all EVs want to charge at the same time if all the ICE vehicles wanted fuel at the same time the queues would be enormous. But don’t worry there are strategies to avoid that.
We passed peak grid demand more than 10 years ago, mainly due to low-energy light bulbs, LED TVs and things like that.
Hi, this is Bob from the national grid. To answer your question, while there are not enough chargers available today, more are coming on line every day. This is in answer to the enormous propaganda that is flowing out. The only problem we have is that there isn’t enough power in the grid, and to his end we are experimenting with several new and exciting technologies. The first and probably quickest solution is to build more coal powered generating plants which we are doing at this time. As you know our country is blessed with coal and these are easy to build. We are also experimenting with natural gas and regular gasoline to burn to produce steam to produce power. Our third option is to develop charging stations powered by rats. The rats will run on wheels which will spin a generator and this would be attached directly to the charging station. We are currently breeding rats…well…..like rats and this may work out to be the best solution and we will offer rest stations and small shops at each rat charger. We will also offer rat burgers and ratkabob at all these locations. Have a swell day motoring…or er…uh …..electroning!
What the National Grid actually said "According to National Grid’s project director, it is expected that electricity demand would increase by 10% if the entire country switched to EVs overnight and started charging.
Some might argue that 10% is a huge increase. However, increased reliance on off-grid energy sources such as solar panels has helped the country to rely less on the energy grid. In fact, the UK’s peak demand has fallen by 16% since 2002.
Basically, if we all started charging our cars today, we’d still be putting less strain on the energy grid than we were 19 years ago!

Can't believe Geoff was saying at the start he would not stop at crappy services.....yet books rooms at Killington Lake!! A small amount of planning could have taken you to Tebay, just 20 miles before Killington, where you have the best services in the country and a proper hotel.
Personally I think someone would have to have a screw loose to spend £120k on an electric car.....
The range is probably no better than a £40k-£60k Tesla or other electric car. For £120k you could buy a seriously good ICE car.
Quite happy with my 3 litre BMW which I get 400 miles out of a tank even despite it's performance. 0-60 in 4.8 seconds, 313bhp and 630NM of Torque four wheel drive, for a big saloon car that isn't bad at all, beats most cars off the line and even kept up with an S3 the other day which has slightly more power and a lot less weight. Oh, and economy?
35-40 MPG if I'm "having a bit of fun" or 40-50MPG when on a motorway cruise.

Lee, you absolutely carried on through, Heavy Rain, very Bad road works, car accidents and you drove through Floods. I thought the Tycan was going to end up as a Boat on the Loch. I do not think Batteries like water. What is it, with your car Smoking?? Driving your car should be a Joy and Peaceful time. EV's have taken away that Enjoyment and Pleasure. I’ll be buying an EV…. Just after I’ve gouged my eyes out with a spoon.
Especially with the styling they give these EV's. It really does make wanting to be blind. We called the Austin Allegro or Ssangyong Rodius ugly as cars, most EV's now make them look pretty.

Only half way through and already decided I will never have an EV.
A few years ago I rented a Zoe for a week in the outer hebrides.
Fun experience, but totally impractical. 1/3 of the chargers were broken. And there aren't that many. Often the charging cycle stopped for no reason, so it was important to check every hour on the car if it's still charging.
Yes I rented a Citroen c3 for the Nurburgring total waste of my time .what a moron!

My 1986 porka 928 5 litre v8 does 22 mpg at normal pace . 900 miles equals about 42 gallons. That’s about £280 for this journey which I believe is less than lees taycan cost on electric. Slower acceleration ,higher top speed , 450 mile range. Zero depreciation.40 years of progress ?
36:00 Postponing charging with 1 mile range left. No way! I don't like EVs, but if I were forced to drive one, I'd want at least 20 miles left. It's not like a petrol vehicle where you can walk or get a lift to a service station with a can. An EV that runs out will have to be towed.

never, in nearly 40 years of driving I have never found a petrol pump that did not tell me how much my total spend on fuel was. They have always shown me penny by penny how much was going into my tank. So why on earth should EV's charging stations be any different at all? Absolutely no reason why that could not be shown. And 67p per kwh?? - over double the standard domestic tariff at the moment, just goes to show that how EV drivers are going to be fleeced. And again it will be the less well off that get fleeced the most - those that cannot afford a house with a garage or drive, where they can take advantage of cheap overnight electric rates, the ones that will have no option but to use charging stations. I have even heard that some charging stations will vary the price depending on the time of day, something else I have never come across at a petrol station.
Most chargers do show the total price. But really, how arithmetically challenged are you? 50 litres at £1.50 a litre too hard for you?
You are however right about the double standards. The people with their own driveways (or chargers at work) are sitting pretty. People in flats and terraced houses with no driveways and no work charging are being fleeced, and it's not fair. But that's hardly the fault of the innocent cars.
With the range, you can’t really let it get down to last few % due to slow mode, where as in ICE car you usually have a bit left once the light comes on. Having lived in England and visiting Scotland yearly, I could not cope with all those stops. Now living in Australia and doing longish trips, same deal.
Driving is meant to be enjoyable and a privilege,that’s why you have to pass a test that gives you that privilege. These EV cars are nothing but stress every time you get behind the wheel.
It seems to me ev ownership is not just range anxiety problems, but your whole life being consumed by charging or charging availability if there working or not ,cost of the various outputs it's like it's took over the entire adventure, I think every politician should be forced to buy one every month do a challenging journey a member of the public may have to endure😂
No. EV ownership is about never having to worry about fuelling up your car, because it charges overnight while you sleep, and you wake up to a full "tank" every morning as if the house elves had done it. It's also massively cheaper even than diesel that way.
Lee is only highlighting that the infrastructure isn't as good as it should be yet, for people who are out on a long drive. How many days do you drive more than say 200 miles? Because that's the range you'll get from even ordinary EVs - then back home for another overnight charge. You'd hardly ever need a public charger.
And the infrastructure is getting better. It's getting harder and harder for Lee to keep finding slow chargers and broken chargers and busy chargers, which he needs to keep his act going.
Nope, come home, put car on charge...go to bed...wake up full battery at 1.4p a mile. Simple really

Not everyone lives there life in an itinerary format! Being free in like a feather in the wind where you land you land ,I'll bet it'll be easier too fuel Petrol or diesel to get home 🏡, the Mcmaster tried to tears too make it work ,(and gained my sub in doing so)I agree some electric cars look great and perform amazing but it starts and ends there.there inflexible and waste valuable time and your tethered like a horse on a line .Thats in my opinion anyway
