John O’Groats to Lands End IN RECORD TIME in an Electric Car!

  • Well this was a long day, but not because of the car or charging. It’s just a very long way! Over 850 miles End to End
    The End to End challenge has been on my list of to-do for a while, so whilst the weather looked good and I was in Scotland anyway I decided to give it a go at the last minute.
    Setting off from John 0’Groats at 0500 how long will it take to travel the length of the UK to Lands End? The records to beat include;
    1. Total Driving Time
    2. Charging Time
    3. Energy used
    4. Average efficiency
    Can a 2019 Tesla Model S beat the previous record set by the team at NetCarbonZero who used a Tesla Model 3.
    The model 3 is smaller, lighter and can charge faster than this Model S.
    But I give it go anyway and in fact ended up only using V2 Superchargers only.
    Hopefully if nothing else this goes to show how covering massive distances is perfectly easy in many a modern EV And really doesn’t need much charting time at all. Your bladder will need to stop more!!
    It can be beaten again another day with cars that go further and charge faster and when there’s even more choice of chargers, but for now I think this is the new record!

      I've had my EV for 18 months now and I wouldn't dream of deliberately letting mine drop below 15 %. Accidentally when delayed or diverted, sure, it's my buffer that's what it's for. But to PLAN to go below 15%? I'd be bricking it.
      It doesn't help that my EV doesn't actually display the capacity numerically in percent or kWh. The best it does is a bar graph with a red bit like you'd have on an ICE.

    Ace video !! I have done Lands End to John o Groats... Total time was a bit less than yours ( because we set off in the evening and for some strange reason we had no roadworks !) in a Model S 75 - 2017 - so we had more charging stops but we worked it so we hit the charging sweet spot at each charger and only charged enough to get to the next main charging point. The thing I remember most was that the charger at Lands End wasnt working and it was a nightmare getting charged to set off with 95% charge !!
    Oh yeah, you get a form stamped at the hotel at Lands End and at the pub at John O Groats with time stamps on it to "prove" your time....

    • @RWBHere
      @RWBHere ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you become distracted by anything whilst driving, including operating the infotainment screen, or turning to reply to a passenger, you can still be prosecuted for driving without due care and attention. This can mean up to 9 points on your license, and up to a £5,000 fine (not just £1,000), even if you don't cause an accident. It's a very grey area, especially with the imperfect levels of autonomy which is available in cars at present. FSD is not what some people believe it to be, and requires constant vigilance from the driver.
      My infotainment screen gives a clear warning about misuse of the system, as did my satnav before it.
      Another bugbear is the number of cyclists we see on urban roads who use mobile phones whilst riding, or who ride with both hands off the handlebars. The root of the problem is that the Highway Code (= the Law) is often not enforced, and that leads to abuse by some road users.

    • @Taylor___

    Excellent effort. Brave to do it during the day time with increased traffic and the summer holidays! And it goes to show an EV which can do 250 miles is more than enough to do such long trips as long as you have plenty of choice of fast chargers- which are coming for sure. I know the Tesla Model S can do more on a "tank" but 200-230 miles is enough in terms of driving in stages.MM

      @@colinwiseman A diesel ICE vehicle would have done it with just one stop, 10 mins at most to fuel up and toilet break.
      Would have had minimal impact on CO² modern diesels produce barely a whiff of emissions with cleaner fuels, DPF, EGR, advanced engine management systems and ECO modes etc
      The Tesla is charging up on predominantly electricity generated by gas fired power stations, which is supplemented by coal fired back up power stations in winter and imported fossil fuel generated energy!
      Not to mention where the chemicals in the battery are mined and refined, battery manufacture plus transport etc all by diesel powered machines and vehicles⚠️
      Take into account all the charging infrastructure and how that impacts on the environment, extra copper wire and it's production etc
      I watched 4 charge points being installed in our local huge tesco carpark, trust me there is nothing green about the diggers and machines they used plus the gas fired bitumen heaters they use for the surface and white lines etc
      Ah but it's cheaper you say? Not if you take into account the huge depreciation on an average EV.

    Hi mate love the channel.
    I just watched another Lands end to John o’ Groats EV v’s Petrol by @geoffbuyscars claiming it would take an extra over 4 or 5 hours in an EV yet from my calculations he took an hour or so longer than you?
    He was driving against someone in a Taycan that clearly didn’t have the knowledge you do.
    As an EV neutral car guy I would love to see a collab between someone like you as a pro EV guy and @geoffbuyscars as an EV hater do a head to head road trip where we get to see both sides of the coin. I think it would make a great video 😉 Fight Fight Fight haha

      He took 'longer' due to huge traffic hold ups which would always make these challenges difficult to directly compare unless done together like they did at the time. If Geoff had been on this same trip he'd have been 1 hour and 20 minutes in front. Since this video was done EV ownership has gone up more and competition for charges and demand on the grid is all increasing. It's not the EV itself that's the issue but the infrastructure isn't being increased in line with demand. Unfortunately it's that aspect that is putting people off and ultimately will see EV ownership suffer if they don't get a handle on it.

      I know geoffbuyscars hates EV’s so you should watch the MacMaster instead because he owns the EV in question. The poor man was reduced to tears because he had so much grief every time he tried to charge his car, it is not in his interest to lie after spending £120,000 on an EV. There are just too many EV’s for the amount of chargers that are available and when there is one available it is at a reduced current because the electricity supply can’t handle it at that location.

    Can't believe the difference one year makes. This same journey has just been done by a TH-cam collaboration between Geoff Buys Cars & The Macmaster in a Porsche Taycan and BMW 3 Series diesel. Both had an awful experience with roadworks, and Lee in the Taycan had absolutely horrendous problems with charging. As sales of EVs have increased, the charging infrastructure for non Tesla vehicles has been overwhelmed and simply can't cope with the demand. If the government want everyone to switch to battery powered vehicles by 2035, they're going to have to invest in more adequate charging facilities. What staggers me is the lack of canopies over the chargers. Leaving people to deal with high voltage electricity in torrential rain is crazy. It can't be safe. Anyway, great video, and great roadtrip 👍
