  • The MacMaster and ‪@GeoffBuysCars‬ are on another road trip. A Dirty Diesel versus an all Electric Car, The Porsche Taycan EV. Can the All Electric Vehicle beat an old Diesel Mercedes from the furthest point in North Wales to Barry Island in the South of Wales whilst having to endure the 20mph speed limit that's now in force in Wales. Who will get there first and which will be the most cost effective. The Diesel Car or the EV using the EV Public Charging Infrastructure? Let's find out in this Top Gear Challenge.

For EV charging to be practical we need in the UK -; 600,000km of new cables , 6 new power stations , thousands of new substations , thousands of new pylons.
It's a pipedream, will never happen , another thing is there is not enough copper ,lithium etc in the world to convert us all to EV's

Agreed. I live in a narrow street of mainly old terraced houses - no parking, and nobody has a garage. What is the plan for these folks, I wonder, even if they could ever afford an electric car in this deprived area.

Every time I watch you pull over and use a public charger, I find me saying to myself, more and more, that I genuinely cannot believe people have signed up to this farcical concept of EV’s. It truly blows my mind. The anxiety of all chargers being in use and having to wait ages, the time it takes to charge vs fill up with fuel, the outrageous cost of electricity, the anxiety of the chargers not working or the car system refusing to take charge, the slow clunkiness of starting the charging process, the list just goes on….
How did people fall for this….?!? 🤯

@@knownpleasures I knew that 10 minutes ago, the cut off was supposed to be 2030, then it changed (because EV’s are such a great, flexible idea). Let’s see what the new cut off date will be in the next 10 minutes….
Also, just because our government has made a decision to do something (devoid of logic and common sense, I might add), it doesn’t mean ‘we the people’ have to just roll over and accept it. We can collectively vote with disobedience or even more extreme measures if it came to that, as has happened many times in history.

Nobody has signed up to anything. You can buy an EV or you can buy an ICE, there's going to be tons of used ICE cars for decades. If you can't afford an EV, can't home-charge, or want to do 200+ miles a day, an ICE car may suit you better. For lots of people, EVs are more convenient, that's why people are buying them, they're not being forced into it. Some people don't suit EVs and go back to ICE, as Lee probably should, but most people don't go back.

A power station like Ratcliffe on Soar generates 900Mw, wind turbines vary in size from 2-7Mw but output varies with wind speed so they only generate about 30% of their max output 70-85% of the time. So if they're 3Mw wind turbines you get 0.9Mw from each so you need 1000 to replace Ratcliffe power station, but only 476 if they're 7Mw. Unfortunately you still need Ratcliffe for when it's not windy.

But these are not residential roads. Even in Norway these roads would be 50kph (~30mph) or 70kph (~43mph). It really is poor road planning

The 20mph is carnage, like yours our car gives us the speed’s for the current road. It’s constantly disagreeing with the road signs, causing us to be looking everywhere but the road.
In South Wales, heading west on the M4 passes through Port Talbot. At that point the motorway reduces from 3 lanes to 2. In the spring/summer months, every Friday as the holiday traffic builds up the tailbacks are horrendous. As a mobile engineer we avoid anywhere around there because the slightest accident causes mayhem that nobody wants to get stuck in.
But, the crazy part is, the motorway cuts through the town of Port Talbot literally in some peoples back gardens, they’re actually looking at the concrete stations holding up the road. They have had a 50mph on that part of the M4 for a while with signs telling drivers it’s for reducing pollution to increase air quality. Approximately 300 yards away from the M4 lies the humongous Tata Steel ( the old British Steel ) plant which spews out pollutants 24/7. The locals have had their cars resprayed at Tata’s cost after whatever is coming out of the chimney stacks has landed on their cars and burnt itself into the paintwork.
Port Talbot is known for its polluting the atmosphere, in 2018 it was the most polluted town in the UK, but the politicians ( Stephen Kinnock, son of the famous EU Parliament spongers Neil and Glenys ) ignore that and persecute drivers instead.

This 20MPH speed limit on country roads is absolutely stupid. The people of Wales should take direct action against the people who put this into place. They have to give some time from any comfortable lives to demonstrate in LARGE numbers outside their parliament ,along the roads and outside the homes of the Counsellors who voted for this. Then they would waken up the establishment into doing something about this.Unless this happens I am afraid the Drakeford lot will have won.

      @robhudson1501 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

One difference I had, we had, the manufacturers had was the freedom to choose which system. Betamax was just too expensive and not flexible enough. All manufacturers are being forced into alternatives and the EVs were the cheapest and therefore the first option so there was no choice and increasingly less freedom of choice probably because our politicians are heavily invested in it. New fuels are out there, good, clean and relatively cheap alternatives. But do they fit the political agenda?

The estate I live in has 20mph speed limits, this in the NE of England. On the side roads this is sensible, on the main road through the estate, a bus route, it reduces your concentration levels of driving. At 30mph you would never look away from the road in front, only glancing to the side to check parked cars for children etc, now at 20 mph you begin to notice changes further away from the road, distractions such as building work being carried out on a house. Luckily my car has a speed control that works at 20, provided the car in front is not doing 17mph. but my diesel cars fuel economy drops drastically at 20mph. Mine is not a smoky car like Jeff's.

Some of the roads are very quiet with nobody around and I keep on wondering how many lives I am supposed to be saving. In my opinion Dripford will not change his mind anymore than Sadcant with ULEZ won't, it's dictatorship to stop us moving around. We overwhelmingly petitioned against it and nothing has changed, they won't listen. Just like some people are liking EV's they are liking the 20mph, it's madness. As Clarkson, Hammond and May said when they drove the Transfăgărășan highway (up to 2000 metres above sea level) "The best driving road in the WORLD". If Lee drives his Taycan though he'll definitely need a petrol driven generator in the boot! Oh yes, nobody here observes speed limits either (50kph in built up areas and 130kph on motorways and most dual carriageway roads). You have to be unlucky to get done for speeding because oncoming cars flash a warning at least two kilometres before you reach where the police are parked with their radar gun!

My province Alberta, Canada just made a new law that speed cameras can only be used for improving safety, like located only in loctions that have issues with unsafe driving, no more cash cow cameras. Road speed limits like the 20mph you were driving on does not improve safety, more likely the opposite with frustrated drivers and unsafe passing

Drakeford doesn't drive and instead cycles everywhere, or so it says on the internet. Does he ever get a taxi or get driven anywhere ? It cost over £30,000,000 for the signs and some roads go from 20 to 30 especially at motorway roundabouts with 20 each side, why ? My VAG group car has updated speed limits for Wales perhaps you have to pay Porsche. At least the Welsh speed cameras won't see Geoff's number plate due to the exhaust smoke so he can drive at any speed.

As First Minister Drakeford has a chauffeur-driven car ... Nearly half of the Senedd's fleet of cars are diesel vehicles, and Welsh ministers are collectively driving 375 miles per day ... but they want the people to use public transport. Lee Waters, former CEO of Sustrans, and thus hardly unbiased, pushes cycling for all he's worth - but claimed more than £10,000 in fuel expenses last year alone. He turned up in a car to the launch of the new TfW trains ... Hypocrisy of the highest level. On yer bike, Mr Waters ...

What i see is that EV's are perfect if you charge 'cheap' at home, either on a favourable tariff exclusive to EV owners, or spend £20k on solar for free electric, and then dont go anywhere.
For everyone else they're expensive, inconvenient and stressful.
You've got to be pretty dedicated to the cult to love them.
As for driving in general, the powers dont want you driving. Pretty sure they want you staying at home eating bugs, working and paying rent and taxes till you die. Then they can tax your next of kin too.

60 gallons of lubricants for a wind turbine. Peak power production varies it seems because you'll get different numbers from different turbine's, but seems to average around 9mw per hour because max might be 35-85mw per hour, but the wind doesn't always blow all day and the average is very low accordingly.
Wind turbines produce about a quarter of what demand is in America and we have over 100k wind turbines.
Wind turbine is basically just an engine on a stick. They don't fix the problem they just transfer it.

Loved the challenge, great video (watched Geoff's too), best thing since proper Top Gear! My thoughts on EVs = already obsolete technology (soon to be replaced by water, hydrogen, ammonia, biofuels and ZPE), 50% depreciation within 12 months, charging infrastructure - not fit for purpose, queues at charging stations, numerous faulty chargers, numerous throttled chargers, expensive public charging costs + fees (BP), no canopies when charging 'electric' vehicle in the rain, extra tyre and brake wear costs, no soul, ridiculously high insurance (and rising), garages won't touch them, breakdown services can only recover on flat-beds (if your lucky), soon to be banned from multi-storey/airport/station/ car parks and ferries (many countries have already started imposing bans and restrictions: Switzerland, China, France etc.), terrible for the environment: slave labour/water table sulphuric acid & cadmium contamination/60000 miles before carbon benefits, no scrap value, no recycling facilities for batteries, prices crashing, manufacturers discounting heavily to shift unsold stock, Ford, GM, Toyota etc., cutting back production and postponing targets and investing in alternatives (see above), range anxiety, stress, arguments at charging forcourts, randomly bursting into flames and exploding, locking people inside (and outside), randomly accelerating unable to stop (MG), harvesting ALL your personal data: mobile phone contacts/videos/photos/conversations/sexual orientation/political views etc., tracking and recording your every movement, expensive service charges, long charging delays added to every journey, stepping stone to government control and 15min neighbourhoods, half the people in the UK live in flats and terraced housing unable to fit home chargers, cost of electricity rising, scrape the battery housing on a speed bump and EV is written off by insurance companies, raising the cost of everyone else's insurance (thanks), buy a Chinese made EV and you're directly supporting slave labour and other human rights abuses, incentives and subsidies are being (have been) removed (hence GM & Ford's current losses), road tax for EVs to be be introduced shortly (next year I believe), unreliable/faulty software (e.g. iPace), Tesla's insane parts and service costs, no access to proper service manuals/DIY not possible, 100000 gallons of water required to suppress an EV fire followed by 15 metre isolation for several days, sea water damages battery (don't drive on a beach), very little luggage space compared to ICE vehicles, can't be towed, breakdown services use DIESEL generators to recharge flat EVs 🤣, frozen door handles in winter (can't force them like on ICE cars (pun intended)), quoted ranges are meaningless since manufacturers recommend only charging to 80% from 20% technically using only 60% of available range, Taycans 'smoke' when being charged! Just a few of the reasons why EVs are a huge white elephant - Betamax anyone?
