- New for 2022 Ruger reintroduces the Marlin 1895 Guide Gun. I wanted the Marlin Trapper model, but missed out on getting it. Luckily, my local shop got in this latest release from Ruger - The Marlin 1895 GBL (Guide Big Loop). I'm just calling it the Marlin Guide Gun. I'd been wanting a 45-70 Govt for a while and I really like Marlin Lever Guns. Since I am a Ruger fan and they purchased the Marlin line during the Remington sell off, I could not wait for the quality of Ruger to be expressed in the Marlin lever guns. I have a fine example here with this big bore lever gun.

Nice! And most people don't realize how hard it is to keep up with everything while trying out a new rifle and filming. I can't count the number of times I've forgot my ear plugs on the first shot!
LOL Yeah, I tend to do that kind of often. Like you said with the filming it is a lot to keep up with. The first 4 shots that I loaded in the gun I did not have either of the cameras recording. They were on, I just forgot to hit record and shot all four rounds. Oh well, I made up for it with the next three. I was happy too that I hit the plate a couple of times with iron sights and off hand like that. Thanks for checking it out. Deer season is upon us. 🦌👍🏼

@@BuckIt00 I was trying to film a hunt but that feel apart. I went in by boat and 2 guys were already on the point I wanted to hunt so I ended up fishing. The downside to filming like that is if I don't end with anything to make a video out of there's no video. But I did catch a few bass!

Just bought a Trapper this past week as I was lucky enough to find one online for only $1237 from De Leon in TX. It was their last one in stock and it's supposed to arrive @ my FFL tomorrow. I had subscribed to several stores to notify me when back in stock but when I got notifications there prices were like $1700! Anyhow, don't have any regrets, that's still a beautiful lever gun you got there, and I doubt you'll lose much money on it if you ever decide to sell it!

I have this rifle, the GBL, brand new. My hammer does not drag on the bolt. The rifle is wonderful, it exudes quality. I installed a Nikon African 1X4 scope with Warne QR rings and two piece steel Warne bases for the same reason, I cannot see to use open sights. The rifle functions perfectly.
Awesome, I'd love to have that base and QR system you have. I just picked up a Marlin base at Academy and used some Weaver rings that I had on hand to mount the scope. I have it sighted in and can actually hunt with it when ready to use it. Thanks for letting me know about your rifle. I know you'll love it as I sure am loving mine.
I absolutely love 1x4 scopes for deer hunting! Well .. anything inside 100 yards!
Even at the range.. 200 yards is not an issue using 4 power!
The idea of scoping a lever action doesn't make sense.. until you try your setup both ways. Having QR mounts gives you the option to remove it easily!
I'm been looking at the xs rail.. for this very reason! However.. mine currently has Williams peep sights and I love those vs buckhorn sights.

I hate the look of a scope on a lever, but I hate my old eyes more. It's your rifle so as you wish. I've got an old marlin/glenfield 30/30 with original glenfield scope. Both 1972 year. Bought it on a whim and didn't like the look but tried it with the scope, and it does wonders for my accuracy. Amazing what you can hit when you can see it. Nice rifle there.
Same James!! My old eyes just aren't what they used to be. Plus I've found that it is easier to hit what you can see. I especially notice this with my .22lr that I shoot targets with. If I can really zoom in on the target I tend to be able to get better groups. I like that 72 Glenfield you have especially with the original scope. That is or at least will be a collectors item. @@cervus-venator honestly I just picked it up one day at a pawn shop for almost a steel. My intention was to use it as a back yard vermin gun and take off the scope. Then I just shot it with the scope. Still hate the look, but I can knock the hell out of some ground hogs now.

howdy! I recently picked up their shorter stainless, threaded, model at a local shop. It looks good and it seems like ruger stepped it up a notch with the quality control.
Thanks for stopping by and I agree as I'm a Ruger fan and would expect nothing less from them. Yeah, I went for the Trapper, but just missed it to a guy that walked in right in front of me. (small local shop with limited selection) That's why the shop owner contacted me on this one when he got it in. I'm liking this Guide model just fine. Man I love shooting these big old rounds at some steel.
I need to get a large loop for my Henry
I'd like one for my Rossi 357, but that is another day.
Nice review, and thanks for the mention! Don't sweat the anti-scope zealots. People have been putting scopes on Marlin rifles for more decades than you and I have been around . . . combined. I put a scope on my 1959 model 336. It sure is helpful in the Deep woods. Just saying . . .
Thanks!! I've been watching your videos for a while now. I always love to get your perspective on a lot of guns you present. That makes me feel better about the scope. Yeah, I didn't mention that my 336 in 30-30 has a scope on it as well. I lucked up on that gun. A 100 year anniversary 1970 production that I got from a guy at a gun show a few years back for a value price of $300. That is my - just go out and have fun - shooting gun. As well as maybe shoot a wild pig every so often gun. Thanks for checking out the video!!

I can relate to forgetting hearing protection...hey, it happens. That is way you pretty much always see me with the fitted inner ears even when I have my muffs...just in case. The .45-70 is on my list of calibers I still need to shoot.
Yeah, I seem to forget my hearing protection more and more these days. With trying to get everything set up, running and then shooting there is bound to be something I'll forget. I also thought this round was going to have more punch than it did. Neither of the two types of rounds that I shot seemed to be bad to me.

I know this is about the Marlin 45-70. That is a great looking rifle. The stock and fore grip are very well designed. I like the large loop lever. I recently purchased a Henry 45-70 brass side gate. I am very pleased with it. It is a beautiful rifle and fires straight and true. I did attach a red dot sight to mine. It took me a while to find one that was just right for me. I do like the recoil pad on your Marlin. Mine is brass. I did however add a leather cuff that holds 5 rounds on mine and in the installation it is designed to add up to .5 of an inch of high density foam. That took a lot of the bite of the recoil out. That being said great video and I am open to questions about my 45-70 .
Cool Russell, I like Henry rifles and they really took their customers to hart when they added the side loading gate to their rifles. There were a lot of gripes about not having this. Personally I like loading through the tube. However, Henry was innovative and kept the tube loading option while adding the side gate so that should make everyone happy. How long is the barrel on your Henry rifle and do you know if they come in varying lengths?
@@cervus-venator The barrel is 18" and I don't believe that the 45-70 brass side gate has a barrel option.

Just found a Trapper this week. Long story but it is a nice looking firearm. Action appears real smooth but I have not shot it. Got it for MSRP.

That's a beautiful rifle and I'm going to get one myself. I've watched many of his videos to. Like George I'm going to get the medium sized lever to put on the rifle. I'm really not to partial to the big lever. Congrats sweet rifle.
Thanks!! Yeah it wouldn't have hurt my feeling if they would have made this with a medium lever. I don't mind the big lever, it is the only lever gun I have that has one. The standard size levers are a little small for my liking so a medium would be perfect. I may look to get one of these for my Rossi R92. Thanks again!!

@@iamcondescending I hear you and yes I agree, get your wife a good hunting rifle that she will enjoy using and get that precision rifle. I built one long range 7mm Rem Mag as a precision rifle, but also bought a Ruger Precision Rifle in 308. Certainly these are not top of the line, but they sure are fun to shoot. I think you'll really enjoy it especially having a local PRS Org to go to. Good luck with these and hopefully the Marlin will come along soon too. Thanks!!

I have a old marlin 45/70. Bought a remlin cowboy 45/70. I'll admit the remlin shoots better than the original. This is the next one on my list. Soon as my gun money pile heals. Nothing wrong with puttin a scope on one my friend enjoy your new rifle.

That's a great looking gun and I too would opt for a scope but shoot it with stock sights first to make sure . Try putting your ear pro on stock while setting up stuff , may help...lol I watch Target Suite vids.

Held a couple of them traps today at a gun show. Im going to wait on the 336. Fingers crossed 🤞 they start the line. If not ill revisit and not be so closed minded.
I think, not sure, but I think the 336 will be the next one to re-introduced. If you go to the Marlin web page and look under lever guns they show the 336, but it states not currently in production. It is the same for the Model 1894.
Now then Cervus, you're gonna have to spend ten or fifteen grand going to Alaska and hunt you a "bar."
I'm too chicken to hunt a bar. I'd shoot a big ol bull moose though.
Got new GBL, and had the same problem with hammer and bolt contact. They would not send a new hammer. Had to send it back to Ruger/Marlin. Still on its way.
Wish they would have just sent you a new hammer, but I guess they also want to see what may be the root cause as well as verifying that the hammer is put in by their tech. At least you'll get it back corrected. Thanks for the info!!

I think they are getting close. I have a 1970 - 336 in 30-30 and love it. I can't wait to see the new 336 when it comes out. I think you'll really be pleased with it.
The Remington made Alaskan guide model I believe had the 16.25 inch round barrel with the gloved barrel loop. It also had the hardwood stocks painted with the black spider paint impervious to the elements. I really love that beautiful forearm and butt stock on your lever gun. Is it a 336 model? Mine had just the dark walnut stocks with the 18.5 inch octagonal barrel. These 45-70 Marlin lever guns are so much better than these modern sporting rifles. A cannon compared to a pea shooter. Forget those plastic firearms, I’ll take one of these any day.
I'm not sure what all Marlin lever actions Remington actually made. I do know that they have not made any rifles since 2020 when Ruger purchased the Marlin Arms division that Remington had. The new Ruger made 336 has not been released yet. What I have is the Model 1895 Guide Gun. Check out the Marlin web page under Marlinfirearms and then click on lever actions. You'll see what all has been released by Ruger and what is scheduled to be released. It sounds like your gun with the walnut stock and octagon barrel may actually be an original Marlin made rifle, but I have no idea for sure as I stated I do not know what all Remington made using the marlin name. If you still have yours I'd hang on to it as it is likely a great gun.
Gonna give a hit to Ruger, and its the machine shop on making quality parts, as in deburring, and smoothing sharp edges. Qualty control should kick that info back to them. I see the same on the ruger revolvers too, along with tooling chatter marks, even on the barrel by the cylinder. Beware

Man, that is a nice rifle. I’d like to have the same weapon with a 14.5” octagon barrel with a 1.5” pinned and welded muzzle break/ flash suppressor to make it a legal 16”. 💥🇺🇸

I've heard that Remington tightened the tolerances for quality later in their production, but I really have no idea if they were good, bad, or the same as I never really looked at a Remington made Marlin other than the little Model 60 that I have. All that matters is if it works for you, which I am sure it does. Thanks for checking out the video. I'd love to see a Remington made Guide Gun.

I bought a brand new one last fall it wouldn't eject the first shell had to sent it back to ruger-marlin they put a new ejecter in it send it back and it works fine now

Thanks!! My Marlin 336 in 30-30 has a scope on it as well. The only lever gun I do not have a scope on is my Rossi R92 in .357. I have put the scope on the 45-70 and man I can smack some plates with it now. Again, thanks!!

Yes Scott, they are not cheap by any means. I'd been wanting a Marlin 45-70 for several years before I got this one. As state in the video i really wanted the Trapper, but there is something special about the traditional blue and sights on the Guide gun. I saw an old Rem Marlin in 444 at the guns show. He was asking 1600 for it.

Too bad they didn’t release an actual Marlin guide gun with the straight walnut stock and polished blue finish . This is a bit disappointing .
Yeah, I'm not sure they will to be honest. I think they are following what Remington was putting out only with slightly better fit and finish. I did look at their sight and the 336 is due to come out and it looks to have a laminate stock as well unlike my original Marlin 336 produced in 1970 that has a walnut stock. There is also the 1894 that should come out soon too and it looks to have a straight hardwood stock, but I can't say if it is walnut or not.
Why can’t they add the extra inch to the tube and make it even with the barrel?
Because the barrel is threaded to accept a muzzle device. If it wasn't then the magazine tube could be even with the barrel end. If I take the thread protector off to put on a suppressor I need that space below the barrel for the can to fit. I guess marketing research determined that more people were interested in having a muzzle device than an even magazine tube. Good question and thanks for posting it. 👍🏼

@@damrgee8279 I'm with you on what feels right to you personally. If that is a deal breaker for you then that is what you should stick with. In other words, it's a lot of money and it if isn't to your liking 100% then you shouldn't get it.

This has to be a wonderful Remington made model because Ruger has only made two SBL models so far.
Yes the only two SBL that Ruger has made are the Trapper with a Skinner Sight, 16" barrel and a Black Laminate stock. The other SBL is the Model 1895 SBL with a Ghost Ring rear sight, a Picatinny rail and a Gray Laminate stock. What I have is the Marlin (Ruger Made) Model 1895 Guide Gun not stainless, but blue finished. Rear sight is semi-buckhorn and it has a Brown Laminate stock. These are the three Big Loop lever guns in 45-70 that Ruger has released as of 2022. The 336 has not been released yet nor has the Model 1894.

Why's that Vincent? I doubt I could put and use a pistol scope on a rifle, but I've already got the shotgun scope mounted and sighted in. To be honest I can't tell any difference between this scope and a rifle scope. Now if you are referring to the Bullet Drop, then yes I agree in that I don't think that will work, but I want to test that. The BDC for the shotgun scope is designed to be zeroed at 50 yard and for slugs with a muzzle velocity of 1900 fps. From what I am seeing the 45-70 projectiles have a similar weight and muzzle velocity. We'll just have to see, but as stated it is already mounted and zeroed so it is working at the moment. If you have any more insight please let me know and thanks.
@@cervus-venator supposedly a shotgun scope recoil is the exact opposite of a rifle all I'm saying what I heard and what I've been taught all my life you cannot use a shotgun scope on a rifle or a pistol

Nice. But am I the only one who thinks the laminate (plywood) stock with the wild flat-sawn grain is UGLY? Marlin's legacy is being sold with a barn board for furniture. Looks cheapo.
I wouldn't think you are the only one. I personally like the laminate for a couple of reasons, but I like a solid walnut stock too. There is nothing wrong with liking one thing over another. I used to hate plastic stocks, but now I like them for specific reasons and in specific situations. I wouldn't say I like plastic on everything just like I wouldn't like laminate on everything.
@@cervus-venator Yes, I see your point, and suppose your right that there's various aesthetics and reasons for the laminates. I have firearms with polymer furniture that I find both aesthetically pleasing as well as very functional. I suppose Ruger's Marlin laminate stock is very durable and has dimensional stability. As a collector of relic firearms, I see military arms using laminate furniture in a pinch with wood shortages. I recon I should buy that Marlin and see what time tells us about the laminated stock. Those Ruger M77 MkII with the Zytel boatpaddle attached for a butt stoock looks really good now and are collectible!
@@joelpeterson8424 Yeah Joel I just did a search on GB for the Ruger MkII and the boat paddles appear to be going for more than the others. I also found a wood Mannlicher stock type that is only about $500 at the moment, but it still has two weeks of bidding to go. I used to hate the Mannlicher stock types, but I've changed my mind over time and actually admire them for their historical significance. I used only like wood stocks, then found the importance of synthetics with the weather as well as the durability of the laminates. After getting a couple of laminates (green/grey) for some .22's I really like the camo aspect in addition to the durability. These days I think I like them all for one reason or another. You can't beat a beautiful piece of Walnut or tiger stripped Maple, but for a good strong utility gun that will get exposed to all kinds of conditions, give me stainless and synthetic. Of course this is all just my opinion on stock types.
@@cervus-venatorRegarding durable field guns: Funny, even though I've purchased rifles to be "beater guns" that I won't have to worry about scratching and denting up, and maybe will paint camo on it some day, I've never been able to treat a firearm roughly and I cringe with any little scratch. I coddle them so and keep them as nice as possible, and haven't gotten the nerve to paint them or lay in the mud with them no matter how inexpensive they are. It's something I can't seem to bear doing. i'm silly that way at this point in time. The Marlin should take whatever someone dishes out, but I'd be wiping spots off it in the rain!
@@joelpeterson8424 I understand completely. I have a couple of shotguns that are pretty much safe queens because I can't stand the thought of getting them scratched. Now I have one shotgun, a Stoger sxs that my friend laughed at how rough I treat it. Tossing it in the boat during duck season and such. I had the barrels camo dipped to knock the glare off of them. The finish on the stock is about warn off. It has even been under water in the beaver swamp before. So that gun is the prime example of a beater and when I got it, it was like new. I look at like this, if that gun is taking the abuse, then the others are nice and safe at home. Even with my hunting rifles, I was complaining about the finish on my Ruger American Predator in 308 just the other day. I was deer hunting and it was raining. I could see light rust coming up on the barrel from being wet. I gave it a good oil wipe down, but still it makes me mad that a hunting rifle can't take a little weather. I'll likely have the barrel dipped to prevent that in the future. As far as the Marlin Guide Gun, I'll be treating it with kid gloves. Too new and expensive to treat it any other way. Just my opinion.
I have a scope. My marlin is older and has real wood furniture. Look into reloading, save yourself some money. Peace
I have an older one too. It is the 336 in 30-30 anniversary 1970 edition and I have a scope on it as well. Back when they put real Walnut on them. I've been in the market for a 444, but they are hard to come by. Reloading is in the plans. I've already picked up some cast bullets and I have plenty of brass. I just need to get the dies and powder if I don't have some that will work for it. Thanks Joseph!
