Had my Seal Premium for about 2.5 months and 4000km’s. Very happy with all of it! Earlier in the week there was an update to improve the driver assistance/safety systems, and today they released digital keys for iPhone/Android
Even if I ignore the quality of the car, I am afraid that if I purchase a Chinese car BYD, my information will be transferred to China. The safety of me and my family is my top priority. Therefore, I will never buy a Chinese car.
@@jihooncha-vs4om What are you scared of? You think the Chinese government will send someone to steal your silver chopsticks or something? Seriously, what information might your car see or hear from you that the CCP could possibly be interested in?
Bruh how is the Chinese government even gonna affect you 😂 NZ is so far away from China, you'd be better off letting them have your info rather than Aussie gov or their daddy America
Well, as long as you keep your Seal until it falls apart in 10-15 years, you will be fine, but if you are forced to sell it for whatever reason, good luck selling it! I believe the Seal had its best month in sales numbers in July, selling 15 nationwide in NZ. The used EV market is non resistant!! July was the best month so far this year for EV sales, not really unexpected, with many of the top selling models having massive discounts, like the Kia EV9 with an eye watering $35k discount off its original price of $135k for the GT Line! And so many ex demo selling for less than half the price of new! One EV that, even with a massive price cut now under $30k, is the Ora Cat, which still can not sell, total sold in 2024 new?? One! Just one!!
I love your reviews so much I really wish they gave your access to more cars so we could hear your humour more =) one of the best modern car reviewers online. =)
Love the Seal, it looks beautiful and the range on the Premium spec is amazing. 490km my bladder wouldn't be able to run that without at least one stop.
--- to me it is! I have been in the Premium since December last year -- and am still in love with it. Wouldn't drive anything else. I like the style of Your Review -- together with the spuds. Love NZ too! Thank You. Adam from Adelaide. Bye.
I've had my Seal Performance since April and it still puts a stupid smile on my face every time I get behind the wheel. Amazing specs and speed for a great price! Having said that the advertised range never meets reality, especially with the heater or ITAC enabled. Also, regarding the audio noise levels, were you using a phone connected via Bluetooth or radio/spotify?

I tested this model for 1 week and I was very impressed. The power is more than enough. I drove it in Eco mode because this gave me a smoother ride. Unfortunately it is too big for me and I don't like the trunk. BYD should make an estate from the Seal.
Courtesy seating is actually really useful for someone short. My wife is 153cm tall, need to have separate preset seating position as her driving position is too close to the wheel.
Nice review, especially since you avoided saying the “T” word by way of comparison. If rumours are to be believed, there is a facelift for the Seal coming. Tweaking things like battery (not Blade 2.0 unfortunately), motor(s) and the interior (dashboard mainly). The Seal is the likely successor to my TM3 although, having test driven the BYD Sealion 6 recently, I might wait to see if the fully electric Sealion 7 is coming to NZ.
In real world, the Premium honestly didn’t have that much more real world range versus the Performance. Hard to pass up the Perf with 390kw. When we were in the market for our first EV, we had to choose the 390kw version. It’s an M3 Killer, and that’s not an understatement. You get genuine leather seats, the iTACS, AWD (always good in the wet and snow) and the real world range was just about 40kms less than a mates Premium. And the heated wheel was a must so, as our BMWs of the past have had this and it’s something we didn’t want to go without.
Did you test drive the Model 3 as well? The Seal is excellent but there are some things Tesla just does better. I'm hoping vehicles like the Seal force Tesla to upgrade things like offering a heads up display and 360 camera.
Yeah I really want the performance but across the pond here in Australia too many rules, I'm 21 but can't drive it due to p plate restrictions, 20 and 19yos can drive it though 🤔
I have to laugh when people say they don't want a chinese car. This is exactly what was said when the koreans entered the market. Now look how much they charge and the loyalty their brands get.
Stats for BYD new car sales in July in NZ if interested. Atto 3: 59 sold new, Dolphin: 23, Seal: 15 and Sea lion Phev: 20. The Atto 3 is having a clear out of the old model, so good discounts. Please not this is not a dig at BYD, all EV have suffered this year mostly because of the introduction of RUC.
Nooooo, unfortunately. But it does come with a mesh solar shield which fits on the inside. In the Performance model video review, I installed one and it attacked me. -Gav
Because the EV market here is dead! I am not sure how they will keep selling the Seal in NZ with a total of 171 ever sold in NZ with just 112 sold in 2024, probably thanks to big discounts this year, thanks to RUC. Of course, it could be worse with just 77 Dolphin sold this year. Or the real loser, the Ora Cat 433 total sold with just one sold in 2024! Lol Even the EV car of the new the MG4 918 cars total sold, but 2024 just 124, again thanks to big discounts. Buy a brand new EV in NZ. You had better keep it! Someone in the Kia group I belong to has ordered a new Kia EV6, a total massive mistake! With a 6 month wait, the only possible reason for the wait is that the car is now made to order and shipped with other non EV shipment. Just for the record will also have an EV6, and after just 1 year, the car is worth half its new price for a trade-in on another Kia!
EVs are in big demand in NZ. Fossil cars are sitting on lots aging. I would love a BYD seal but timings wrong as I will buy with my business to claim back any depreciation. Nicer ride than Tesla but most premium EVs are just crazy good.
Am waiting for the 2025 model that have more things and also even less price, but a tiny tiny bit smaller battery also it get an 800v up form 400v electrical platform. 10 to 80 at 25min
It's new tech. Prices will come down over time... and probably relatively quickly given the economic nose dive industrialised countries seem to be doing now.
The Seal is on borrowed time in NZ! It's pretty much like all EV. July has been the best selling month for EV in NZ, a big thanks to massive price cuts to most EV brands. Even the Kia EV9 sold 31 in July vs. 3 in June, but of course, the sales shot up when Kia decided to knock $35k off the new price! That's almost as many EV9 last month that the Seal has sold in the last 3 months, being 33, and that is total sales nationwide!
Oh and it's not BYD fault or any EV in NZ it's the government thanks in part to the RUC that has done most of the damage, many say it's the cut of the rebate, but now most of the best selling EV in 2024 have savings far higher than what the rebate offered
Certainly like the looks of this model! Does it also come with a free lifetime membership of the china communist party (CCP)? Most chinese car brands offer this in china (via the car app). Just wondering, would give a nice premium feeling to the whole.
Insanely poorly made. Charging this in your garage is equivalent to a randomised house fire. An average of 8 Chinese EVs burn down every single day in China. That we know of...
Absolutely rubbish. In fact latest EVs from geeky are 1000 times less likely to catch on fires compared to petrol and diesel. Safer driving and less insurance as don’t get stolen. I can find a negative except having to listen to uneducated fossil knuckle draggers
@@Chris.Davies haha bollocks - your info is BS but say it was true 8 EVs burn down houses in China based on stats that would make approx 8000 houses burning down by having fossil cars parked in them daily. Still not bad % for a billion people
