    Very interesting! Your take on theme on 100% spot on. It makes us buy bad games and elevates the good ones.

    I am a sucker for a huge stack of cards. I am not talking a deck builder but a game like Terraforming Mars or Earth. Those make for great replay ability. Especially since you don’t need to shuffle between games.

      Oh man, you're totally right about not having to shuffle every game. If I can leave a game on the table for the week and not have to shuffle, that's huge. I'd never thought about that before. That does make for a very different experience between games

    the player has to do a lot of the work as far as getting theme out of most flip/roll & writes. then the other end of the scale, Cthulhu DMD, is so pulp it just oozes theme and suspense. totally agree with the modular aspect. As long as it is easy to add and remove modules.
    My decisions are totally retail therapy, and if it's shiny enough. deal breaker is how good it's solo is. Getting them to the table depends on mood. light/heavy

      Oh man do I know about that retail therapy. My shelves are overfull from my very stressful last job...

    @#5: I don't need no huge decision space from the get-go.
    There are more dealmakers for me than the five you mention.
    1) If a game has preset initial difficulty, initial game mode, that is a big one.
    2) if a game has unlockable cards, recipes, quest, whatevers, big one. It's good to start with half a box unavailable to me.
    3) if a game provides a scoring sheet AND achievements AND roguelite (with a t) I am already practically sold unless the artwork or producer would be dealbreakers.
    Unless I'm very sure about blind testers proofreading everything I'm not backing any first editions. All the good ones get reprints with corrections. May take years but I can live without bugridden boxes.
    Arydia, Xia, Dead Cells, let's hope for the best.

      I hadn't thought about it, but it's weird that I've had to make quite a few scoresheets in excel. I'm a big fan of roguelite as well

    As I listened thought about, uprising curse of last emperor. Enjoy this game solo or group. Challenging and very mix and match

      man, I really wanted this game, but the board is just too big. I love the colors

    The 5 reasons to me not to buy a certain game:
    1. Has no official solo mode
    2. Not using only cards (it's okay to have here and there other components but mostly cards)
    3. Minis? No!!
    4. Euro? No!!
    5. Theme that hate? No!!
    Everything else doesn't matter, it narrows down my collection to 22 games only and I'm proud of it.
    I used to have like 40ish and cut it by half

    I liked this video! But now I’m curious: What are the solo auction games that you’ve seen? I’d love to give them a try!

      thanks! So I was talking about a bidding / bluffing game called The Old King's Crown that has a solo mode by Ricky Royal that is supposed to be excellent. @BeyondSolitaire covered it really well here: th-cam.com/video/0gAoyoPgPIo/w-d-xo.html

    I traded away my Aeon Trespass Odyssey for Oathsworn.
    The migraines have finally subsided and I'm actually enjoying myself again!

    • @JAlanRykerGames
      @JAlanRykerGames  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      haha for a big game, Oathsworn is really easy to enjoy. I have heard things like that about ATO that make me worried about my Kingdoms Forlorn order, but that's a problem for 3 or 4 years from now ;)

      @@kosterix123 I'm enjoying Oathsworn, but I'm also enjoying the absence of A.T.O. lol.

      @@JAlanRykerGames KF is alot more streamlined for sure. For ATO, the amount of rules referencing/fiddly-fuckery was not equivalent to the amount of enjoyment I gained from it.

    Oathsworn??!! OATHSWORN??!! I am flabbergasted and betrayed. What happened to "fits on my table" and "Emergent narrative > explicit narrative"? Just when I thought I had an internet gaming bro! Just kidding, of course -- really just makes me want to take a closer look at Oathsworn

    • @JAlanRykerGames
      @JAlanRykerGames  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      ha! Well if it helps reduce the cognitive dissonance, I'm one of the five people who'll admit to only doing the single-page narrative portion to find out what bonuses I get. I played the full narrative, and honestly, with its maps, it could almost be its own game, but I didn't like taking the time when I just wanted to get to the combat.
      It wouldn't fit on my table without the companions, but I can play two full characters and two companions and it juuuust fits on my table and side tray

    A deal maker for me comes from the judicious use of reviews. After you've watched enough content from a reviewer to see if their gaming tastes match yours, an endorsement from that reviewer seals the deal. The inverse also applies- if Tom Vasel hates a game I will probably love it.

    • @JAlanRykerGames
      @JAlanRykerGames  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      ha! it's nice when a reviewer can provide enough information that you can see that all the things they're saying as negatives are things you either like or aren't bothered by. Some people don't know why they like or dislike things, and those reviews aren't useful
