    I just had this come up in suggested interests and i have been trying to find more instructional vids on printing and binding pdfs as i dont have the money to buy every industrial printed and bound version of things, hardly any i do that with, as im into crafting things myself anyway. But i have difficult time with finding actual suggestions on what is the best type printer for doing game stuff as im into going back to old vintage magazine games files, such as people post on BGG,and making custom sized versions of games for myself. I inherited a HP printer along with this old pc and its terrible cartridges that have hardly any ink,and the ink runs if it gets any sort of moisture near it,and the density of the printing is so opaque and weak. Id like to know exactly what was best kind of printer. Id seen people saying tank ink printers of some kind,but forgot what exactly they were called. Not laser jet, i dont think, because thats what i already have and its blurry crap production.

    For a more stable front and back cover you can take a slightly heavier paper that still runs through the printer and laminate it. Cut of the excessive transparent part (back to the size of the paper) with that cutter of yours and them bind with the rest. Works for me :-)

    Thanks for the kind words about Game Stamps! I'm intrigued by the way you colored the stamps with markers, rather than using ink pads. That takes more time, but it creates some interesting possibilities. Perhaps you could use multiple colors, coloring the trees in a darker shade of green than the ground beneath them, or using a different color for the rooftops on the towers?

    • @JAlanRykerGames
      @JAlanRykerGames 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's a great idea. It does seem like there's a little time before this water-cleanable marker ink dries where you could add details like that. Definitely going to try it, thanks! And hey, good luck with your product. It's a great idea and looks really nice

    Personally I have nothing against minis. But in this game I felt they are very unnecessary since you really only move over four different spaces. This would look cool if they are painted, but I can't do it and playing with a big grey mess just won't do it for me. In addition the price was very high for something I was conviced I do not needed so I didn't back this game back then. But recently I was very lucky and got a copy from someone who just wanted to paint the minis. So I paid payed a touch over 100 bucks for the game with all gameplay expansions. For the creatures I printed their portrait from the back of their boards and glued them to 95mm wood disks, did the same for the hunters with 35mm disks. And this should have been an option from the beginning. In my opinion this looks better than unpainted minis, there are zero drawbacks in terms of gameplay und you need just a fraction of the storage space. For me the best buy of 2024.

    Writer of your three most recent decks here! The colours of the tiles show either a room, or a corridor. Yellow is Room, White is Corridor. So you should be able to add those Good, Bad & Troll cards into your mega deck (I do this myself!). There's also another deck now (Undead & Buried) which will mix very well into your mega deck. Its based in a graveyard, but has standard door/corridors. I hope you like adding Manic Mansions into your deck though; there are lots of dead end rooms, which should increase the flavour.

    Excellent intro and break down vid. Wayfarers & Adventurers is my favorite expansion, as it introduces character traits, my favorite add-on mechanic (in fact, I combine Milestones and Character Traits to create the backstory, using the Milestone as the explanation as to why the milestone exists). Two other books that add milestones and worth having would be Twisted Traits and Zealous Zouaves. Another great add-on to give it that AD&D1e would be Digressions of the Devouring Dead. Fortress of the Warlord is a multi-part campaign, the first mission includes a miniature hexcrawl. Also, minimal rules on creating hex maps/overworlds is presented in Tales of the Adventures Guild. And a mini sandbox level 1 campaign is presented in Lantern zine 2, that probably could be combined with the overworld/hexcrawl in Tales. Lantern 3 has a pirate ship dungeon, perhaps you could combine it with the pirate themed deck, Dark Waters is also pirate and water themed, all three loosely combined together could possibly create a kind of sandbox / hex/ shipcrawl feel - the two patrons in Dark Water are expanded as full fledged patrons Greedy Gifts of the Guildmasters for truly expanding the world (and off course adding in Treachery of the Troublesome Towns, TTT, to create the port city the adventure takes place in, would be the complete package on how to generate a "Freeport" type setting for 4ad). You should also look into Crucible of Classic Critters to help expand out your forest tiles and encounters, as it can be easily combined with the forest decks you have. The craig tile's expansion, More Mountainous Meyhem, may also be worth looking into for creating above-world sandbox/hexcrawling. Again, excellent vid and looking forward to further 4ad vids and implementations.

    What about the "Dungeon Card Decks" (Dungeons, Mines, Forest, Sewers, Necropolis... I think) with 3 sets each? There are also "Loot Card Decks", not sure if there's something with Armor/Weapons/Equipment. This seems to make the whole RPG a lot better to get into the game, especialy for newcomers like me. No map-drawing, way less details in whatever tables searching.

    Wow! Love your list and your channel. You do a great job of presenting the games, and I agree with what you value in games. I will definitely be back for more content. I have For Northwood, Regicide and Spaceshipped (and agree on all of them) and am close to getting Fliptown. Other solo or solo mode games that fit this list (besides several other Button Shy games, of course) - Cascadia (and now Cascadia Rolling...) - Doppelt So Clever - Maquis - there is a PnP solo mode on BGG for Splendor Duel that is very good and free. - also on BGG free PnP, 2023 in-hand game design winner Fungi of the Phalages Forest by Roshni Patel who has done other good games - any of the Oniverse games - Guild of Merchant Explorers which is just a flip and write with cubes and chits instead of a pen (you could put the maps in report sleeves and write) - Black Sonata might be on this list if the KS ever fulfills (the PnP is too complicated to built for me). - Orchard/Grove/Forage - Dr. Steve Finn games (Herbaceous, Floriferous, Snowfall over the Mountains, Sunset over the Water, etc.) - 20 Strong Anyway, GREAT content! Oh, and in contrast to this list, I just checked out A Feast for Odin from our local public library for the winder holidays to try for the first time. It is actually unplayed and unpunched. I look forward to learning it.

    Best review ever that explains my feelings with this game. Played it when it first came out in 2015. The game’s card text and mechanics were flawed but art and dice play set it apart. Fast forward and Nick has absolutely fixed the game but couldn’t put my finger on why I wasn’t having fun playing the solo. This review helped me feel like I wasn’t crazy. Will try your suggestion of not overthinking the play next time and see if that helps. It absolutely felt like a grind. The rinse and repeat nature of solo games usually bothers me and the solo play-thrus for red rains felt like that. The only solo ones that don’t feel like a grind for me are the legendary encounters games. I think it has to do with the amount of work one has to do for the ai in addition to their own play choices. I love this game but struggle to find people to play it in-person and when I did have people to play it with I usually felt blown out of the water back in the early days. Thanks for this review. Also thanks for mentioning the awful marvel champions mechanic of spending cards to play cards among other things. Was so disappointed in that game. It should have been so much better.

    Do you need the corresponding PDF of the module you have the cards for, or just the cards? I tried playing 4AD with the PDF only, and I didn't understand the hype. The card system looks much quicker and easier. Also, I didn't have any of the expansions. It seems like that is where the magic lies. Maybe I need to give the system another try.

    • @JAlanRykerGames
      @JAlanRykerGames หลายเดือนก่อน

      The only pre-requisite for playing with an adventure deck is the core rule book. If what bothered you about 4AD was flipping pages constantly looking for the tables, then the cards will definitely fix that. If what bothered you was that you don't make almost any decisions, the cards won't fix that. Now, if you might be okay with that as long as it flows quickly, then again, the cards MIGHT fix that for you. That's kind of where I am. There are a number of crawlers that are WAY too much work for a game that almost plays itself. For me, 4AD plays so smoothly it becomes almost a meditative experience, especially with the cards. BUT, I did play the base game quite a few times and enjoyed it before getting the cards. As far as expansions being the key to enjoying the game (the go to excuse everyone makes for the system)... It depends on what your issues are with it. I have a LOT of the books (probably over half of them). Of the top of the head, the only one that significantly deepens the gameplay, rather than changing the theme or adding variety, is Treacheries of the Troublesome Towns (from what I can tell from reading it (haven't played it yet, plan to soon)). Its town creation and exploration and the methods for making the town seem like a living place make it really impressive. Four Against the Netherworld offers a deeper experience, too, but it's kind of unconnected to everything else as it takes place in the afterlife (it is also much more difficult). Otherwise, if you feel the game lacks theme, then a themed expansion will help. If you like the game but have seen everything, then an expansion will help. But it's definitely possible to just not like the game.

    • @milesdurkee4549
      @milesdurkee4549 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@JAlanRykerGames Thanks for the detailed answer! I only have the base PDF. I was having trouble with the gameplay being interrupted by having to scroll through the PDF to look up the results of my roll. Heck, maybe even printing it would help me. The herky-jerky-ness of going between rolling, scrolling, drawing, scrolling, rolling, scrolling, etc took me out of the game, mostly having to put down my pencil to look at my computer screen. I would be in the headspace of exploring while drawing, then have to look up my next move. The cards genuinely seem like they might take care of the issue. I'm going to throw one of the card sets into my wishlist. Then I can say I truly gave the game it's best chance.

    • @JAlanRykerGames
      @JAlanRykerGames 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@milesdurkee4549 it sounds like the cards really could help, then. and it's pretty affordable to try out. good luck! I think castle ravenstein is my favorite set that plays exactly like regular 4AD. I also really like roads of peril, which plays almost just the same even though they're roads and towns. To find most of the card sets, you have to search on drivethrucards, btw, not drivethrurpg

    Ah, Primal. From everything I've seen, it's certainly a very well-thought out game esp. in card play synergy. But this is just a "me" thing, I just feel like when battling giant fierce bosses, I need it to be on a battlefield grid system. It just lacks that spatial aspect to the tactical positioning you would find in a grid arena setting. I do see how it appeals to others in a streamlined form though

To me it is the biggest revelation of the last few years and how well the narrative part can be done in a such small format as well as how its deterministic nature provides superb base for new runs as it creates this tension between known (what the cards do) and unknown (when specific cards will happen, - Order of Silent Berserkers FTW!)

    Love the video and you have me intrigued.... any recommendations on what to get? What not to get? Go for divine wrath? Or 2nd edition? So many options...

    • @JAlanRykerGames
      @JAlanRykerGames หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are a lot of options, especially because there are a lot of entry points and it's not necessarily obvious. You can even play this game with just one of their chapters boxes that has one boss and one hero. As far as to go for Divine Wrath or 2nd edition, I think either would be a solid choice. Check out their site if you go for Divine Wrath, because you could get it now. I don't know about the shipping, though.

    I’ve been looking at this for awhile. The pledge levels are very confusing and it doesn’t really show what is included in each one. That’s my opinion and I’m going to pass on it. It seems pricey for what it is.

    • @JAlanRykerGames
      @JAlanRykerGames หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are a lot of options, and the game has a lot of jumping in points. I never try to talk people into buying something they've found a reason to skip over, because there's too much stuff out there. I'm always grateful when a campaign gives me a reason to walk away. Just to address the pricey part, I agree that it's pricey, but I don't think it's overpriced for what it is, or a bad value. They are a tiny operation working for the love of it, from what I can tell. Now, I'm a customer and have to be smart with my dollars, but I do appreciate that. But I also feel like I'm getting a good value. As far as components, there's a ton of heavy cardstock. I have to be careful lifting my mega box with both the base game and divine wrath in it. You don't get minis and cardboard, but looking at it all, I have to think they've instead "spent" a lot of time developing an amount of mechanically different experiences that is far beyond what a player expects from any game, instead of spending on components. I feel that what I own is a good value from a gameplay perspective. Not at all trying to talk you into buying, but price is something I feel I should have addressed in the video more than I did, so I'm going to pin this.

    Great start, lots of intrigue early on! I've been using Google Docs for my note taking. You might be influencing me to try a scripting software though. Perhaps on my next game. I'm getting tired of typing "Bob said", "said Bob" and "responded Bob". I'm currently playing through a game of Star Trek Adventures: Captain's Log.

    I have the regular and sci-fi apprentice decks. I'm excited to see how you use the decks in your game. I'm jealous you got them for $8! Also, I didn't realize Scarlet Heroes was specifically made for solo adventures!! How has no one ever said it so succinctly?!? Session zero and you're already helping me!

      Thanks so much! When I saw the $8 price tag for those decks, I snatched them all up, except as a writer, I had no interest in writing cyberpunk. so now I had to spend $20 on it instead. Which just goes to show that you should buy everything that's on sale. Probably 2 of them

      @@milesdurkee4549 I don't know of any who use the GMA decks. I do know of quite a few who use the story engine , which I now use to generator the plot concepts of almost everything I write. But that product is more equally aimed at writers and GMs

    Great video, thanks! If the expansion comes with decks, do you really need the base game? I've only got the first edition and heard that you need the second for Red Rains but since it comes with Phoenixborn decks, it looks as if you only need the dice (which I have)...

      Thanks! I'm not sure what the difference is between first and revised edition. They push it, but I'm not sure. I'd say, buy a chimera, and see if it works. If it doesn't, get an upgrade kit. I just looked at the description, and it sounds like they made changes that might not be breaking with red rains, but just a matter of taste: www.gamenerdz.com/ashes-reborn-ashes-1-5-upgrade-kit

    Thank you for the how-to and ramblings! I totally agree with buying PDFs and then printing what you need. My board games already take up way too much space. It's also a much cheaper way to fulfill the addiction of buying more. Question about your printer option: what program do you use for your PDFs because I don't think I've seen all of those on my computer?

    • @JAlanRykerGames
      @JAlanRykerGames 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the kind words! I use foxit pdf. I think the free version gives a bit more control than other free versions of pdf software. Like the textboxes and drawing capabilities. I really like textboxes for whiting out toner-heavy areas. As far as printer options, though, I think most standalone pdf programs will give you access to that true, windows print screen (that's the modal with the printer options. it's base windows). Chrome doesn't let you access it easily, trying to make it simple and in doing so taking away most of your control. Other browsers might, too. But in Chrome at least (not sure about others) you can go to their simplified print screen, then click "Print using system dialog..." This will pop up a windows print modal. Then click "Preferences" to get the advanced options that you saw in the video. Hope that helps!

    This is a great option. I also broke down and got a spiral binding hole punch machine - obviously an option that takes more specialized equipment, but I like being able to fold the pages back, which the spiral allows easily.

      Being able to lay the book fully flat is a great feature, especially for books that have game boards printed in them (I'm thinking of Mike Lambo's solo wargame books). And then yeah, as someone with a small table, being able to halve the space ones books take up is a huge draw. Honestly, I'm going to have to add a spiral punch to my little operation at some point. Thanks!
