    Try Mint Knight in place of Mage Knight. A scaled down version that will fit your table

      I have heard that's an excellent replacement! I think I had been scared of learning the game so scaled down, but since I've learned it with Paladin's Oath, I might get it

    Is actually don’t think Mage Knight is too bad for table space… because most of the space needed is for cards and tokens- which you could actually move around/position on separate tables and chairs quite easily. The modular board can get quite big but other than that nothing else needs to take a big block of space besides the fame track which isn’t a big board. I think MK is doable for most tables.. I wouldn’t give up on that one
    EDIT: I just watched another video and it seems you’ve tried Gaia Project at some point? So for example I would say Mage Knight takes the same or even less table space

      I haven't tried Gaia Project yet. The closest I've come is to play Terra Mystica as an app, but I never understood what that purple resource was doing, bouncing around between the 3 zones.
      I will definitely table Gaia Project at some point. I've just been going through a spell where I'm playing games I already know

      @@JAlanRykerGames ah sorry I misunderstood you other video and thought you had tried it already! I’ll try another one comparison as a reference point… I think I saw Eldritch Horror behind you on another video; I wouldn’t say Mage Knight takes more space than that.. possibly less.

    When I only had a tiny coffee table in my flat, I bought a cheap Ikea table top, stuck little felt pads on the bottom and placed it on the coffee table or a keyboard stand to have a play area. When not in use, it would stand by the wall and take up practically no space at all. Now that I have a bigger, extendable table, I still use it to have a flat, one-part surface to play Flick 'Em Up on. Maybe something like this could help?

    • @JAlanRykerGames

      That's a really good idea. I'd have to play the game in one sitting because neither table is in a space where it could stay up, but still...

    Good video. I use a folding lifetime pasting/camping kind of table. folds in half and fits things like mage knight, iss vanguard, even euthia! 😮 may be an option for you, as its takes up hardly no space when folded down.

    my board game collection took off once i built my own game table. I'm not a woodworker. it was pretty straight forward, minimal tools. made it recessed and with covers. anyway, i can squeeze cloudspire on it, i can also cover it up and forget what a nightmare remembering the rules for cloudspire.
    honestly, the best thing i did for player comfort and enjoyment was build that table.

    I had a small table, but then I wanted to get Mage Knight so bad that I bought a 180x80cm folding table that can easily be stowed in a closet.
    I never do that, though. I leave my huge games set up, always. Mage Knight, Gaia Project, Cthulhu Death May Die, Nemo's War, John Company - to name a few. And more recently, my table became a host to a fungal parasite that is Dungeon Degenerates, which devoured my table with its sprawling (and funny, and epic, and insane) campaign for almost 9 days now. DD might be the best adventure game ever. What a wonderful procedurally driven story generator, it's a true gem (in the rough, also sticky & stinky).
    Highly recommend both a big fucking huge folding table and Dungeon Degenerates.

It's a pretty simple game overall, but with tons of small rules and keywords that you have to constantly reference, so it's that kind of game. Totally worth diving into, though. Well, you didn't even mention The Isofarian Guard. That was a beast but I used a scan of a smaller map. It worked fine but the game wasn't for me.
    As for Fallen Land 2, I could not resist.
    So I scanned in the board, and effectively it is 3x2 full A4 size segments. So you could make an atlas out of it (you know, like sleeping gods atlas), but you would need to track the various mission points across pages. It could work with a little TLC
    Also FL2 features a particular solo variant, the no-map variant. So you could play that to death. Especially given the 20-ish factions.
    Finally, in FL1 bgg file section is a bunch of tuck boxes that if you print on 108% resize they do fit the FL2 box (center row, across). Obviously I made those (2x) and it helps.
    But I'm not sure if I would play it over Salvation Road which does fit on my table and has an awesome campaign I designed for it.

    Uprising so worth it. I have with plays organized and dont need trackers on sides. Use tile for death counts and if you can even use score pad for keep track. Made my own game table initially used for playing star wars armada, so space not usually hiccup

    Great list! Numerous games can be table hogs, yet none of them come close to my #1 - Aeon Trespass Odyssey. It's so big that you need two large tables just to play (and ideally, leave it set up inbetween plays). So much so that I haven't bitten the bullet on that one, although I'd love to play it.

      Oh man, so I made a very silly purchase before I came to my strict table-size rule, of two of the four huge boxes of Kingdom's Forlorn. And then I saw that ATO takes 2 full size tables...
      My hope is that the dungeon generated in the noncombat phase won't be encountered again so it should be broken down, unlike the ATO map.

    My table at home is 2 1/2ft x 3ft so I definitely understand passing on games too large. Just getting aeons end on there is a bit of table hog. I own massive darkness 2 and only played it a few times because after setting up all the cards and stuff it barely fits. I need to 3D print a stand up card organizer that would save a ton of space 🫠.

      Oh yeah, Aeon's end takes up a surprising amount of space, I agree! Basically everything just fits on my card table playing two handed.

    Ugh, nice list. It's not the space that bothers me in such games as much as price 😅 I should say, though, that 33" table is adequate enough for Mage Knight. Its largest part is the map but after couple of games you can unfold it in the most efficient way your table allows. You can ditch fame board (and have it nearby or against the wall - if your table is against a wall 🤣- as reference), day/night board, place cards on top of artworks etc.

    • @JAlanRykerGames

      definitely there's a distinction to be made between games that have a board that holds a lot of things (decks of cards and such), like Witcher: old world, and ones where that's all expected to go around the board. But Mage Knight tracker boards are a full table by themselves, if you've ever seen it laid out

    • @JAlanRykerGames

    I am fearful now as I know you picked up Space Hulk and I too primarily use a 33” card table as my gaming table. Unfortunately, many of the modular maps for these missions will not fit on this table. I have procured a folding 3’x6’ table that I can set up in my garage or other areas when I encounter games that require more space. I also plan to replace the top of my 33” table with a piece of plywood to stretch it to 48”width and 44” depth (my space restrictions).

    • @JAlanRykerGames
      @JAlanRykerGames  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's the thing with games workshop larger scale and modular maps... But I'm thinking about doing a false tabletop. The card table behind me in videos, I can put a false top on it for individual play sessions (because it blocks the entry into the room it couldn't stay up) but I think space hulk would be good for that

    So far I’ve only played Mage Knight on TTS, and I’ve tinkered with Paladin’s Oath. But I have this theory that it doesn’t need as much space as people think, and the reason is because you do so little backtracking in the game. So you could probably remove tiles Langoliers-style once you’ve moved past them, and only keep a handful of tiles on the table at any given time.

    • @JAlanRykerGames
      @JAlanRykerGames  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      ahhh that's a good point about not needing to go backwards. that is the case in paladin's oath, only going back into known territory to cross into the next unknown tile occasionally.
