    I think Daniel announced that he is no longer adding new videos. That's unfortunate.

      He mentioned that in his YT community section 3 weeks ago. I agree with your comments about his channel. I hope all goes well for him.

      Thank you for taking the time to let me know. I didn't realize. Wow, yeah, I hope whatever is going on gets better. It seems like his amazing empathy has come from his struggles.

    Just discovered your channel and I really enjoy your presentations. After you said “…I’m a horror writer” in the first video I watched, you did a jump cut to you looking like a deranged killer with a bunch of your books. You GOTTA do something like that in every video…loved it!

      haha don't encourage me! I've been worried my intros are too long. Glad to hear that landed, though

    Was suprised Apocrypha was mentioned and even more when it was your #1. It is one of my favorite games and what got me into modern boardgames. I love the art, that it is horror based in the modern world, and that it is not another Cthulhu-themed game (I really don't like Cthulhu anything so I tend avoid games with it as the main selling point.)

    • @JAlanRykerGames
      @JAlanRykerGames  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wow, so you jumped right into Apocrypha! I could see that actually being a benefit, since learning any game would be new and difficult at that point. They just made up so much with it, were so original. I mean, you've experienced the five different ways to discard, each with its own name, so I don't have to tell you this.
      Cthulhu has definitely become a cliche at this point, especially in board games

    Arkham Horror is rereleasing their starter box as 1-4 player. Originally you had to buy two starter boxes for 3-4 player play. The original 1-2 player boxes are going for stupid cheap. I got my brother a box for $6 brand new.

      ha yeah, I have a hard time resisting that sort of liquidation pricing!

    Very good video. I have not heard of a lot of these games. They all look interesting.

    Happy to have seen the Kilforth series get some love, a game which I think flies under the radar for many people. I really enjoy the emergent storytelling that occurs with the keywords as you mentioned and now I got the itch to pull it off my shelf and give it another go!

      I hear you, because It's definitely one of those games that occasionally calls to me loudly from its spot on my shelf!

    Please do a top 5 maps made of tiles. I nominate: (1) Euthia (hex tiles). One amazing thing about this game, is that although you draw each tile at random and it has to be put in a predetermined place, experienced players know they can nurture and develop favorable maps. (2) Magic realm (also hex tiles). A truly amazing map-building phase that has enormous effects on how well the subsequent play will go. -toby

      I have some games in my collection I need to get played before I do, but I'm planning on it!
      Magic Realm fascinates me, but I don't know if I'll ever play it. I've printed out and read a couple of different versions of the rules, though. Did you back that new game that's based on it, Dragons Down?

      @@JAlanRykerGames I have not tried dragons down. I prefer to seek really different games, each time I choose one. -toby

    Thanks for the video - interesting theme. Another game that features cards as a map is 'Grimsligers'. It has it's flaws, but I've always had fun with it. Keep up the great work!

    • @JAlanRykerGames
      @JAlanRykerGames  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks! I've looked at Grimslingers before, because the art is awesome and I love western and weird west themes. Do you think it's worth getting only for solo? It being 4 narrative scenarios made me question the replayability

    • @joetrotta9211
      @joetrotta9211 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The art is awesome. The big complaint is the rulebook - but since I only play solo, I have no problem solving any issues (without cheating, of course 😊). I should have mentioned that the variable map is in the Northern Territories expansion. Sorry I skipped that in my post. The expansion also includes other scenarios. I like the way the expansion allows you to level up and since the cards as the map is always different, you can play them over and over, especially if you play with different grimslingers. As always, it's best to try before you buy - give it a spin if you can - hope you enjoy it. Thanks again for your videos, they are really very helpful. Thanks 🙏!

    Tabletop for one is great!

    - Hand of Fate. I like it, TONS of cards, but those minis are plastic blasphemy (and not in a good way).
    - 7th Continent. Too many 'wild goose chases'. The curses overlap with each other on the map and pissed me off by wasting huge amounts of time following the wrong trails. 7th Citadel better for me (so far).
    - Arkham Horror. Good fun, but removed the auto-fail token because fuck that🖕. Unless there is an auto-success token to balance it out, it will remain on the sidelines.
    - For card-based map games, ,my honourable mentions would be Tainted Grail and Dark Venture.⚔

      The bag in ahlcg is a bit too much for me, so that sounds like a good house rule.
      I'm set to get Dark Venture whenever the second printing ships! Seems like not too long now

    Love your stuff! Which house rules do you use for 7th Continnent?

      Thanks! It's been long enough I'm having trouble remembering the exact rule, but it's about how far you have to go back if you die. I won't start all the way over

    There is of course Adventure of D, dungeon of D. Barbarian Prince, Journey to the Overland.

      I've been wanting the D games. Cutting that many cards has been holding me back
