Mike, so nicely done. Your pieces are the only ones that are close to a classic chess set. Thank you so much for being part of this 4Ways group. I always learn so much from each of you. Thank you!
Lots of useful stuff for making your first chess set. I really like the way you mount the blanks on the mini screw chuck whilst making space for the weight.
Thanks, Richard. Certainly grabbing with a chuck maybe a bit faster but does not provide for that extra weight. Aand as you have shown in the past, a screw chuck can be a great way for chucking a variety of projects.
Very interesting 4 ways project this month. Yours is the third I've watched so far and each of you have taken very different approaches to the project -- I love that! Now off to watch Sam Angelo's entry. Thanks again to all of you for this extremely engaging set of videos.
Very nice video …. Nice lines on your pieces! I thought your comparison of learning to use a skew chisel to learning to ride a bicycle was the best I’ve ever heard. Tomislov did a great video on the skew chisel that really helped me. The four of you that are involved in the four way projects have helped my turning learning turning curve tremendously. Thank you 🤠🇨🇱
An excellent video with some very good practical tip for the novice turner to keep on plan. Liked the small sunken/tapered screw chuck in the hole for the pennies. Thanks for another informative and entertaining video.
Hi Mike, I finally got to watch all four of your chess piece turnings. I always enjoy seeing the process you each use. I have to tell you though that your process fits my style better than the others do. I really appreciate the in-depth historical information as well as the detail techniques you describe. I used to teach and have used the “informative” instructional technique in business. That’s probably why I appreciate yours so much. It could be though that I’m just hard headed and require multiple exposures to the information. Keep up the good work. Don’t telll the guys that you’re my favorite. 😊 Thanks. Tony
It looks like Sam really set you up for this challenge. You already have a lot of practice doing these. Of course Richard kind of overwhelmed the challenge with sheer size. Have a Happy and Prosperous 2024.🙂🙂
I like the pieces you made I want to make a hole set the I don't have any idea how to make the knight if you could send me information how make it I would appreciate it I like your video's thank you stay safe and look forward to seeing more video's
I suspect some posting error or inventory is out on the Woodturning Store site. Highland WE has them. www.highlandwoodworking.com/record-power-sc1-mini-geared-scroll-chuck.aspx I prefer the direct threaded SC2 with slightly more jaw traverse.
I really enjoy your channel! Mike I was wondering what kind of chuck are you using? The second question is what kind of dyes work best for light colored woods like hard maple? Thanks Mike! Happy New Year!
You can't beat a story board ( stick). I use them when making multiples. I think it was you from a few years ago.. I also have a cheap set of spanners ( wrenches), which I use very frequently as my set size callipers. Now on to no#2 of the challenge partners.
Your appearance is frozen; sound is OK but the picture doesn't follow the sound. Gremlins? As the video progressed, sound and visual were much better. That is one big pawn! Edit #2- Were the designs on the chessboard done by pyrography? If so, I have a project for my wife and her new pyrography set. Thanks for the video.
The project is great. However it is distressing to see you wearing a watch and ring while you are turning. It is a potentially dangerous practice and not responsible to demonstrate.
Good project for any turner Mike, all the best for 2024👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😎😎😎😎😎😎
Great chess set Mike.
Glad you like them!

My pleasure!
Making chess is a very painstaking job that requires a lot of patience and accuracy. An excellent result. Thank you very much for the video
I like the clean, simple lines of the king. They are accentuated by the turning quality and wood choice.
Thanks. Picking a design is an important step.

Grandmaster video. Nice job. I love the screw chuck you made to hold the piece. Very clever.
Thanks, Ken.

Thanks! 👍 That is good to hear.
I am a sucker for good jigs and such and special mounting chucks. Thanks for the video and God Bless
May God bless you as well, Edward.
Very nice Mike! Enjoy watching your precise techniques.
Take care, Dave
Thanks 👍
Thank you for sharing Mike. Four completely different approaches, expertly delivered as always.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Good info provided as you worked. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
An excellent video with some very good practical tip for the novice turner to keep on plan. Liked the small sunken/tapered screw chuck in the hole for the pennies. Thanks for another informative and entertaining video.
Thanks for that.
Thanks Mike really appreciate the spindle turning aspect.
I need to learn the duplication aspect.
You can do it!
Thanks Mike always a good lesson ... holly works well for the light wood too.
Yes it does! Not always an easy woood to find in quantity around here.

Yes he did. Richard certainly surprised us.

Watch the playlist I have in the description area for more chess making videos including the knight.
Mike , I love it, you really showed in depth what it takes to properly make chess set.... Awsome job 😀
Thanks, Tomi. I think this project caused us to head 4 different ways more than usual. Lots of fun.
@@MikePeaceWoodturning indeed, this project perticular..... 🤗
nice video, lot of cool techniques, however I went to look at the SC1 mini chuck and don't see it anywhere except on the RP site.

yea but I think I like the longer length of the SC1-mimi thank you for the info @@MikePeaceWoodturning
Let me say first they all look very nice! I was just wondering why the turner with the smallest lathe turned the biggest piece ?
He has the most skill.
He's a badass
Bonjour Mike. Champion aussi dans cette catégorie de tournage ,cela vaut le coup de regarder cette vidéo . Avis au amateur...que je suis...👍
Merci!
I really enjoy your channel!

These are the chucks th-cam.com/video/a7lZ7MNLLvY/w-d-xo.html There are several dy companies - Transtint, Chestnut etc. I like Chroma-Craft pre-mixed.

Yes, spanners make great calipers. Happy New Year.

An editing glitch I did not catch. Yes, pyrography Zentangle.
Many thanks for this video and others! Just what I need, something else to do! Edit: I like the idea of the story boards. @@MikePeaceWoodturning
I'm sure this was an interesting video, but I had to stop 2m in. The "upside down" camera angle was turning my stomach.
Sorry you could not stomach watching my video. Never had anyone else complain about looking over my shoulder camera angle.
@@MikePeaceWoodturning Thanks for the reply. Dont get me wrong; I like the idea. Maybe just not quite so far over.
The project is great. However it is distressing to see you wearing a watch and ring while you are turning. It is a potentially dangerous practice and not responsible to demonstrate.
Thanks for sharing your safety concerns. We should all take safety seriously and mitigate the risks we feel need mitigating.
