It's always nice to watch someone who is at the top of their craft. Great video, thanks for making it.
making 1600 pawns for 100 chess sets would be a nightmare...
I am from India punjab
I make all pieces and special knights
Great idea, I’m needing to practice making duplicates and this would be a great opportunity, thanks so much
عمل متقن الى ابعد الحدود.... صراحة كلمة فنان قليلة عليك .. واصل ابداعك
Thanks, Colwin, and the entire Axeminster crew for a great video, learned so much that can be applied to other turning items.
Thanks Peter, glad you enjoyed the video
Wish you had made this video before I made 2 sets of chess pieces! great video.
Hi Dave, You can never have too many chess pieces?! Thanks for the feedback
Great to see someone using sharp edge lathe tools as they should be used. Excellent video.
Finally someone who can actually turn wood when making films!
Never used a lathe before but a friend has offered to teach me and another friend has made a metal form to use on making the pawns. This video is more than just an introductory course. Axminster has some skill!
Thanks! I’m currently turning a set and found your tutorial very informative.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching
Very nicely executed. Great choise of shapes. Good video and audio.
Thank you 🙏
Here you show again that you’re a Wood Master - simply impressive performance 🍻
What an excellent demonstration of skill!!!!
Bravo good job
Great Master
Lovely work on the chess set. I just made a board and posted it on TH-cam and hopefully one day I will have a go at a chess set and this will be the video I am saving to get inspiration.
Many thanks

A pleasure to watch. A bit out of my depth but maybe one day 👍
You can do it! It is a great beginner skill builder.
Very nice chess pieces! I will try them on my new CNC lathe, once I make the CAD...thank you for sharing!

Thank you so much for making this very informative video. Please tell me the name of the calipers you use in this video and where one may purchase them. Thank you.
Hi there, the calipers can be purchased here www.axminstertools.com/axminster-spring-calipers-external-150mm-201107
Good day Mate. Is there any way to watch your you tube videos in order. I have only resonantly discovered your videos and would like to watch them from the start . Cheers Mate
Hi Terry, Great to hear you love our videos! If you click on the Woodworking Wisdom playlist, that features all of our videos. Scroll to the bottom to find our first live Woodworking Wisdom broadcast, which was Turning Fruit with Colwin Way. Hope that helps.
What is the sealer you are using? Thanks for the video!
In this video Colwin is using a cellulose sealer bit.ly/4c0Gsno, which will be followed up with a spray lacquer.
Great video 😊 do t suppose you have a lost of sizes of each piece please
Hi there, here is our step by step blog on how to make the chess pieces completes with materials and sizes www.axminstertools.com/ideas-advice/chess-pieces-how-to/ hope this helps!
Top man fantastic, thank you 😊
When sanding, is the speed of the lathe determined by personal preference or by the density (type) of the wood you are using?
Hi there, the speed is determined by the size of timber, the balance, the task and the ability of the turner. Hope this helps
@@axminster Thank you
It's easier if one set was black as far as color goes or a different color than on the board as far as cnc x concerned
Hmm, whoever set up the board has an alternative idea of placing the pieces.
We like to keep you on your toes! I think someone is trying to cheat.
The board itself is correct, the right square nearest the player is white (white on right), then inwards it goes Rook, Knight, Bishop and the easiest way to remember what way the King and Queen goes is that the Queen always starts on its own colour square (white Queen on white square).
roughly how long did it take you to turn each piece? im thinking of making a chess set for a school project but i just need to ensure i will have enough time, thanks :)
Hi there, it will depend on how accomplished your turning is and the chess piece. Colwin took 10-15mins per piece, not including preparing the blanks. Some of the more complex shapes may take longer.
What brand Chuck are you using? Does it have several sets of jaws? Love that Chuck!
This video features the Axminster Woodturning Chuck - specifically the Axminster Woodturning Evolution SK100 Chuck bit.ly/3lyVDj0 available in a variety of thread sizes and with a huge range of jaws available too bit.ly/47RPSzq
@@axminster I have a Jet 12-21 vs lathe, would this lathe handle the axminister that is used in this video? Read something that this may be a little heavy for the mini lathes??
Yes this particular chuck would be well suited to this lathe. Hope this helps
@@axminster thank you, I’m located in Little Rock AR, any venders close by?
Sure, our US distributor is The Woodturning Store www.thewoodturningstore.com/axminster-woodturning/

The chess board is freaking me out
Wooden pieces are easier to tell the difference if they are painted
It would depend on the wood. You need enough contrast in either value (light to dark), hue (color), or graining.

Thank you!!
