    I go through the process of woodturning a Chess King on my lathe. From roughing the blank to wax polishing! The entire process took around 3 hours. The King is one of the more intricate pieces to make, with the knight being the most difficult.

    I have about half a chess set made, but I lost my momentum when I moved house.
    I made mine on my metal lathe, and I have to say I'm blown away by your skill, because working by hand on a wood lathe is way more difficult.
    I'm kot really in a position to offer you advice, but I see a lot of other potential chess set makers in this comments section, so here's my 2c worth.
    Don't try to make all the pawns at once, otherwise the monotony will get to you, and you may end up not finishing the set.
    Instead, for every piece you make, make one pawn. That breaks things up nicely and keeps the enthusiasm going.

    Gorgeous work and a beautiful King! How do you ensure that all the Kings, Pawns, etc. look the same? I've seen those Indian chess craftsmen using custom shaped tools that have the final profile of the pieces already cut into them. Also, have you made a complete chess set that we can see? I don't see one on your Instagram channel.

    Really nice craftsmanship, thanks for sharing. I wonder what it woul look like in Yew? I turned some 6 inch square bed legs from european oak, I was surprised how easy it was to replicate the shape freehand, but perhaps it's different with such a small piece.

    Very nice work! Imagine making 32 of those babies. And the knights are all hand carved 🤔.
    The championship chess carvers make molding profile cutters (like shaper blade profiles, but flat instead of cylindrical) to quickly carve identical shapes on the lathe for the round pieces. Wonder if that would be feasible.
    That cherry was remarkably light colored, almost like sapwood. Again, beautiful work.

    • @archiefieldhouse
      @archiefieldhouse  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes I know how they do it in India. I could get a piece of steel laser cut to the right profile and then hardened, but this method of turning requires almost no skill and I don't have much interest in rapid batch production. If there is a market for these pieces then it's a completely bespoke set in which the customer chooses the style and material.

      The lathe I'm using in this video is not recommended, if you're only making small chess pieces you could get away with a 'mini wood-lathe', but if you think you'll progress onto turning slightly larger stuff a 'midi' would be good for a beginner turner. It all depends on your budget and the size of what you want to turn.
