James. I binge watched all of your videos today. For not ever having done a chess set before you did an amazing job. You have inspired me to bite the bullet and buy myself a bench lathe. Thank you very much for sharing your videos. Tim White - Aberdeen MS
Hey James. I realize this video series is quite old now, but I just started turning my chess set today and decided to see how others are making the pieces to draw inspiration. I really enjoyed your videos and some of your methods will help me utilize my time much more efficiently. Thank you for taking the extra time to video the process. Cheers from Nova Scotia, Canada.
I recently found the chess pieces I had started to turn many years ago. I did all but one of the pawns, one of the knights. I also turned two kings. The kings don't have the cross on their crowns, just a curved top. I now have this idea of making it a 'Hebrew' chess set, so the kings will be fitted with a Mogen David star instead of a cross, and the 'bishops' will become 'Rabbis' and instead of the crock hat will wear a skull cap. The other pieces will be ok as they are. Never mind the total weight of the pieces, you want their center of gravity to be low enough so they won't tip over easily.
This was a very informative and interesting group of videos. Thank you for sharing and taking time to teach me. You have inspired me to make a set for my son. Do not let the nay sayers get you down. They are just upset they can't do it. Thanks Stanley Langford Beaver Creek Creations
Well I've watched this for ... over a year? It feels like over a year. Glad you finished, and the time it took you tells me how long it would take me if I decide to tackle the same project. Good job James!
Beautiful set Mr. Werner. The design is very unique. I have quite a few chess sets and I really like how your pieces are chubbier in the middle section. I would call them Botero style chess pieces, alluding to master painter from Colombia Fernando Botero, who’s paintings sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars and even millions. Were you inspired by some other design or did you just came up with it? I really love the very unique design, and the fact that the pawns are wider on the base than regular sets makes them match all together even better. The only thing that I think would make it look better is a larger chess board. Of course a nice wooden board would be nice but I am referring to the size of the squares. The one you used on the video seems too small for the size of the pieces. Larger squares would make the pieces be a little less close to each other and won’t look it to crowded. I loved your chess pieces and the video. I appreciate you making it and sharing it with us.
Thank you Manny for the very kind words. In the process of planning an additional set soon. And the board will be of appropriate size. Thanks for watching!
Well done James! Hard to believe you are a beginner! You make it look very easy.... I am all set to try my own set... just waiting for my chisel sharpening equipment to arrive so I can get started on mine, beginning with the pawns! Great inspirational video and like you I am a former IT professional (22 years) so perhaps there is hope for me yet! Well done and thank you, really enjoyed your videos!
I agree with you about the size of the pawns, they look great. The pieces are already size differentiated height ways and by design. Besides, big pieces allows you to build a large, custom board to play them on, hint, hint.
The pawns do look a little clunky to some other sets but I like the way it all turned out. It reminds me of 1950 Dubrovnik chessmen; kind of toy-like but it is a game after all. Wonderful set
These pieces are THICC! I like it, but I think they need a bigger board. When I play chess, I like to be able to slide the bishops and the queen between other pieces when moving diagonally, but I don't think there is room for it on the board you showed them on due to the size of the piece bases. Something to keep in mind when you make the board, hopefully you eventually make board for them!
James, you have a great talent for woodturning and for explaining what you do and how you do it. I'm in Ireland. I was wondering about the dimensions of the pieces as I'm gonna turn a chess set. Thanks for your videos, they care wonderful.
Hi James, yes you are correct that the sizes are wrong, however they are very well made so congratulations on your work and if it encourages game play then its a grand set! Well done.
Hi James Love your chess set, take no notice of negatives, if you like it its the way to go. I would suggest you make a nice wooden board to really finish it off if you have the equipment to make it.
The weight differences show why you needed the sanding sealer in the white pieces -- lots of air cavities in them not in the dark pieces, including lots of open pores on the surface that needed plugging for proper finishing.
Hello JamesThank you for posting your videos. They are very inspiring.I want to get started turning shortly and your videos have been great to watch. The pieces look great. I am thinking I will get same lathe and was wondering was wondering what chuck you are using? Thank you again for sharingAll the best. Chris
Hola James, buen trabajo, se nota que tienes experiencia por la facilidad que cortas en el torno. Dime: vendes las fichas? cuanto el set completo (mas una dama de cada color)? Gracias y sigue adelante.
Say Mr. Wagner I'm back to revisit the question of you selling this set if you ever have it on hand or made another? Just state your asking price if you might consider a sale. Thanks...G.Rosado.
On 11:40 I think the board should be bigger for this type of peaces. heavy peaces should take no more than 75% of the square and pawns no more than 30%
Where did you get that thick felt, and was it precut into circles or did you cut it yourself? If you cut it yourself, how what method did you use to get perfect circles?
I would but consider: each piece takes between 4 and 5 hours. So even if I charged only slightly more than minimum wage, the set would start at $1,800.00. Thanks for watching!

Beautiful chess pieces. Like!
Very nice, great job!!
The weight differences show why you needed the sanding sealer in the white pieces -- lots of air cavities in them not in the dark pieces, including lots of open pores on the surface that needed plugging for proper finishing.
I think the size is fine you only need to put one piece to a square so as long as they are not too big to fit on 1 square they will do nicely
Thanks for watching!

What substances are in the shine juice? Will and can you discuss what does constitute this formula?
You can get the recipe straight from Captain Eddie himself.

Great video. I just watch it for a second time. May I ask, how were you able to cut the felt so perfectly round?
Where did you get that thick felt, and was it precut into circles or did you cut it yourself? If you cut it yourself, how what method did you use to get perfect circles?
I show that in a later video. Thanks for watching!
James, Any idea when you will post the felt detail?
If I wanted to order that chess set...
