A real speed demonstration of what the skew is capable of. I hope you enjoy it and if you can stick with it and see the small details at the end well done!
This takes the prize for The Best Woodturning Video On The Web, Steve. I love to watch your talent and appreciate you sharing all your videos. They are a wonderful training course. Salute!
you are definitively a master my friend. I am impressed by how firmly is your left hand during the whole procedure. Is a great lesson for me, thank you!
Steve, it’s wonderful to see you working again! Your undoubted mastery of the skew is a joy to watch! Very inspirational! If you have time I’m sure we would all love to see more projects. Thank you again!
That is the most incredible skill with the dreaded skew chisel that I've ever seen. You made it look so easy but anyone who's ever used a skew knows, it can be a bit tricky. Thanks for sharing your skills with us! 👍🏾
Directly after watching this I went to the garage in my pyjamas and grabbed my little-used skew. A happy half hour I went back to bed, perfectly happy and smelling of AB Walnut. Thanks for the inspiration to practice, practice, practice!
You are by far the best person I've seen with a skew. The only person I know who comes close is now deceased. His name was Rick Reeves and he made over 10000 spinning wheels in the manor colonies in Iowa. I watch your video many times to learn from it.
This video is so addictive and mesmerising. Just watched it again for about the sixth time and realised that I can zoom in on my phone and really see it close up, even more awesome. Love your work mate.
Wood turning videos on Utube are a wonderful way to learn from the very best. Im sure I could watch this video a hundred or more time and still learn something new each time. mJust Brilliant.
Interesting. I'd not have thought these cuts could be done with just a skew. Very nice demonstration. I saw another video recently that showed me where I was screwing up to keep making catches. Now I should be able to put that understanding with this knowledge and get back to using my skew properly. Thank you very much for a target to reach for.
Surely you are the skew master I really enjoyed your dedication of your work which surely will helps a lot how one can use the skew. Well done Steve and thanks very much for sharing your experience with us thanks.
Hi Steve, I have just found you on YT after not having turned anything for a few years due to work getting in the way. I used to follow you on twitter until I fell out with it and I just loved your skill. I am so glad I have found your YT channel and can watch the Master at work again. I do hope that you are still doing what you do best and enjoying it. I have subscribed and will keep a keen eye on your channel. Thanks for sharing Steve and keep up the great work. FromTheLog…
Fantastic job, as always Steve. Always a treat to see your skill level in a way that shows how you cut. Would have like to have had the sound of you cutting the wood there is a lot to be learned from the sound of the perfect cut.
I think I have watched all your videos. Your experience shows. Thank you for sharing them. Helps to see what can be done in a short time. Time seems to be such a lost value to most. Sure would like to see a bowl of 6 inches or bigger turned.
Steve your videos have been an inspiration to me. I have gained so much confidence with the skew and it is primarily because I watched and rewatched your videos. So many practical projects and of course these practice projects are exceptional to see the techniques and skills needed. Do you do live demonstrations for clubs ? Have you considered doing a live Zoom meeting for clubs? I am in Edmonton Alberta, Canada.
You are amazing! I know , I have said this many times but, you are beyond Talented! I love to watch you turn wood. I follow you on the social media’s !! I am a big fan!!
Can you provide information on your skew; size, grind, shape of end, handle length and brand? I am new to wood turning and this is the best skew work I have seen. Motivates me to try it but want the correct skew to work with. Thanks!
Hi It’s a 1” Ashley Iles flat skew. I grind it to 30 degrees included angle and 15 degrees of skew and a straight edge. I make my own handle and prefer a long handle of 18” this is personal preference

Big respect to the fearless little guard ring, attacking that big sharp chisel every time it tries to make a cut. My brain had it running up and down the spindle, yapping like my shitzu does every day when the evil squirrels come to sit on the fence. They might have murdered us all by now if it wasn't for him protecting us 😂
Greetings! I am a 68 yrold "New Turner." I love your Skew video, but have a "New Guy" question. I got a skew in my $50 starter kit and again in another kit that I found in a garage sale. Those and others that I have seen have "flat V" grinds, yet in this video, I see that your skew has (for lack of a better description) has a concave grind to it. Your skew cuts like a hot knife thru butter, while mine are... not like yours. Could you do a video on how you get your skew so sharp?
Hi, I'm new to woodworking and I love your videos. Can you offer some advice on how to form the hunny dipper without chipping the end? I've been trying but with little success
Just getting into turning and actually building my own lathe so I can say that the ships wheels I give all my kids and their kids this Christmas was made TOTALLY by me. What size and who manufactiures this chisel. Does it require a lot of sharpening?
You are amazing! Couple of questions. Is your toolrests height at center, and do you ever look at the top side of the turning while trying to see the form of things? Do you watch your chisel or the wood when you turn beads, shapes etc? Happy turning!!
Wonderful. I'm a skilled woodworker, but new to the lathe & the skew is killing me! You are working off one height; is it high, low, centred? You are a long way from the work; why is that? Are you self taught?
I did a production turners apprenticeship. My family have been woodturners for 300 years. The tool rest is slightly above center. I’m away from the work as I don’t move the rest if I can help it and so once the corners are removing looks like I’m a distance away.
great demonstration, question: do you sharpen the skew by hand on a stone after the grinder? i dont understand woodturners don,t sharpen by hand the chisels have a much longer life i gues
No I use the skew straight of the grinder, no need to hone, if I hone it puts a slight secondary bevel and I don’t like the feel of that. Everyone is different. I hone my standard woodworking chisels
@@woodturner21 ok i understand, because the chisel is hollow because of the grinding wheel and the wood is round. than the bevelhas more support on the wood. it makes sense now. thanks

You completely amaze me with your skill with a skew. Thanks again for sharing!

Is it possible some woods don't allow a smooth finish with skew or any chisel? Or are all woods equal and I just need to improve?
Most woods can be cut clean. But not all woods are equal. Any with wild grain can be tricky and anything going rotten tends to rip up if not careful
How your chisel stay so sharp for so long?
Good steel
