The speed actually has more power and torque than the mt-09..
The MT09 just delivers it in a more bonkers way Speed Triple does def have more torque though :D. The Speed Triple RS 1050 is where it is at though, I love that bike more than the new 1200 RS :)
I had the 2011 Speed Triple then I got the 2012 R. I loved both of the bikes but the 2012 R was by far my favorite. I did some track days, took them both to US129, road Moonshiner 28, and took some epic trips on both bikes. The Speed Triple is by far one of the best bikes out there. Period.

I test rode a Speed 1050 recently (my everyday bike is the '13 Street Triple R) and I actually felt the same as you - the bike is a little weighty and the tank is very wide. Not so much criticism as it's still pretty goddamn fast and handles well (however I didn't ride the R version, so can't make a direct comparison but I did experience some negatives). My video of the ride will be up soon.
As for on track, I fell in love with my Street all over again. The handling due to it's light weight was amazing and thanks to the torque of the triple engine I shit you not, I was faster on corner exit speed than every other bike in my group aside from a Ducati Motard 900 (which blew me the fuck away). What let it down was top speed - I was really running out of steam at ~130+mph which is where I was left behind. In the short sprints, chicanes and twisties though it was fantastic. Not a fully-focussed track bike for sure, but as you said 'if you have one bike'. I rode to the track, spanked it, rode home and not once was I uncomfortable or frustrated.
I will never sell it.

Why are you twisting the throttle while starting it? You realize it's computer controlled fuel injection and ignition right? Not some old CR80 dude :) I own an '11 Speed Triple BTW.

For the record, I believe those HP Corse pipes were known for actually dropping the power on the Speedy, compared to stock pipes.
when paired with the street db killer and an improper tune, there is a power loss. However, with the race db killer and a proper tune, people claim to gain 3-4 hp. not as much as with most other pipes but still a small increase in power.

Test rode a speedy RS 2018 then a MT10 back to back.
The speedy is way more refined and torque is useable from low rpms. Just a superb ride.
The MT10 has a seriously twitchy throttle to the point it's dangerous in slow traffic.
Serious fun and power but the torque isn't all through the rev range like the speedy! It's a tamed R1.
I'm selling my GIXXER 1000 for a speedy R or S and the build quality is amazing !
The suspension on the speed triple R is in a whole other world from the FZ09. That's probably why it just goes rather than the wheel not being able to stay down. The suspension is so soft on the FZ09 it can't absorb the energy from the torque... That would be my expectation for what you experienced.

Ive owned a Street Triple and I've ridden a Speed Triple and those triple engines are no joke. So much fun with enough power to scare you all day.
i have owned both the MT09 and the Speed Triple and agree, the MT09 feels more aggressive with a sharper throttle. Probably accentuated because you are sat more upright and its a lot lighter. It is also mapped to give a lot of grunt low down the rev range but it soon tapers off. However, the Speed is much more planted and has far better handling. The speed is the quality option of the two bikes. horses for courses.

the fz09 make about 65 torque compared the Speed Triple 81. but do to the extremely soft suspension on the fz09, it makes it feel like it has a lot more torque due to it squatting the rear end.

I just bought one. Previous bike was a CBR 1000rr. Its definitely quick for what it is. It will come up off power in second easily.
I love the looks of the speed triple but cant stand the light they need to fix that... But otherwise a pretty sexy bike :)
I'm very pleased I went with a Street Triple rather than the Speed. For the mountain passes here the Speed is a bit too heavy with only a small power boost.

If you get a Benelli TNT , you have to prove it, I have it and has an incredible torque. And it does not have any type of electronic aid

I had a 2007 Speed Triple and just bought a 2015 Speed Triple. Had sport bikes my whole life. Since purchasing my first Speed Triple I will never own another bike again unless I buy a sport tourer for more wind protection but I will still keep my Speed Triple. These bikes are unlike anything else on the street. They are a grown mans SS.
I think I'm going to go with the FZ-09 because the style and look of the bike is so much more appealing to me than the Triumphs.
I'd love to see a Street Triple first ride! I ride a ninja 650r right now, my first bike and I've had it over a year. Soo ready to move on to a bike I don't have to shift as much, basically need a little more power. The street triple is my first choice, but sometimes I think I could handle the speed triple. Anyway please do a first ride with the street triple!

why did you give it some throttle at the startup? most bikes with fuelinjection it says in the manual to never hold the throttle when starting it up? even a local dealer and mechanic told me that.
heck even one person gave my bmw some gas and whined it didnt start properly, i just turned the key waited 2 sec for all electronics to settle in, then turned it over and started it without issue.

i really wish more bikers knew more about engine configurations. im not saying bikers dont know, im just saying more should know. that inline 3 cylinder engine sounds so beautiful. this and the fz-09.
You should try the BMW S1000R that bike is totally awesome ride.
This is prolly the best sounding bike/exhaust sound I've heard so far. Do any of the subsequent Speed Triple or Street Triple make this noise?
Follow up: I test rode a new 2016 Speed Triple R about an hour ago and it was the smoothest most comfortable bike I've ever ridden. I also rode a Ducati 959 Panigale, and a 2016 Monster 1200S and they were just uncomfortable and super snatchy respectively. Granted my FZ-1 has more power than the Speed Triple, but the Triple just seemed so refined and very enjoyable to ride. Like baby bears porridge. At some point power isn't everything. This bike is very nice.
what's the difference with the R model?? and in this video what was the displacement of the bike?
The R model gets Ohlins suspension, Brembo brakes and Pirelli Supercorsa tires. The new one also gets some carbon fiber bits, and a few dressed up parts as well as red stitching on the seat. Same motors as the regular model though.

My favorite bike reviewer, as usual, awesome review. I'm pondering getting another bike to join my CBR600... Double Rrrr(CycleCruza Reference). I've been thinking about getting a Fireblade for a few months now, but your reviews of the Yamaha FZ-09 and this Triumph have me conflicted. I went to look at the Yamaha the other day, an orange one, it looked spectacular. Plus I saw one that has some addons on it and it looked even better. Chase, any advice?

hello!! bikes with modern injection engines do not require you to open the trottle while starting them. that could be why the bike was so reluctant to fire up. hi from germany
SMO has a Street Triple R, which is the smaller cousin of the Speed Triple R. If you're interested I'd be willing to meet and let you ride mine for comparison. The Street Triple is based on the Daytona 675.

Street Tripple is an in line 3, the torque curve has more mid range compared to an in line 4 with the exception of the 636 more or less.

That is one of the best all around bikes (It can do everything well) money can buy.
Currently I have a Triumph Daytona 675R and it is awesome as well.
Next season I'm planning on selling my Daytona and buying Speed Triple or BMWS1000R.

Anyway, I just want to let you know that I had a 2006-2007 suzuki gsxr 600 and now I recently sold it, I am thinking of upgrading and getting either a 2008 Suzuki GSXR 1000 or a 2012 or 2013 Yamaha R1, still havent made up my mind yet, could use some help, do you think maybe you could make a review on both bikes and recommend which is better for street riding ?

i agree completely with smo the street is so lively thans to its lightweight,i love mine. Although that 1050 engine onthe speed is intoxicating, was the same in my sprint 1050 which popped and burbled all the time. nice review though buddy.

Chase the FZ-09 is down 20lb/ft on the speed triple..... But the speed triple is heavier which may be why it felt less torquey.... You dig?
