This film has been always a Gem for me, due to it saving my birthday party.
The year was 2020, i was 16, and it was my birthday, i had all my friends in my house, we we're playing fortnite in my ps4, but suddenly the internet connection went down and we couldn't fix it, we decided to watch a movie instead, and i found this one laying around, i put it in, and we had the blast of our lives, we laughed at the outdated computer effects, but we also had a great moment discussing the deep social commentary of the film.
Since that moment i've been referring to it as "the gem that saved the party". Thanks, Lawnmower man.

Was it the blu ray version by Scream Factory? I've heard that one is great. And glad that you got to appreciate it as a 16-year old in the annis horibilis of 2020. I do remember when the movie out in 1992, although I think it wasn't until a few years later that I saw it and then another decade when I watched it. I'll have to watch it again given the return of virtual reality into the public consciousness.

Nice to know that The Lawnmower Man has some love. It developed quite a cult following in Post-Soviet countries. I've personally always considered it a bit of a comic book style supervillain movie and it also has the exact pleasant type of early CGI I enjoy as an art form in itself rather then just a visual effect. I also quite fond of sequel, which is worth checking out if for Matt Frewer's performance alone and.. I somehow had no idea it was originally written by Grant Morrison but that makes perfect sense: both movies are oozing comic book style.

There was a book written by Daniel Keyes way back in the 60s called Flowers for Algernon about a mentally handicapped man named Charley Gordon. He is bullied and tormented by his peers at the factory they all work at. A doctor comes to Charley telling him he can make him smart with a brain operation. Soon Charley becomes a super genius. In the end Charles reverts back to his former mental capacity but remembered what it was like to be smart. I always thought that Lawnmower Man plagerised that story quite a bit. There is no VR and Charley does not turn into a God like character but the similarities are striking!

The removal of 40 minutes worth of subplot that only builds two extraneous characters just to brutally kill them is a good thing in my opinion. I agree that Caroline's murder would have made Jobe just an outright villain and destroyed the compelling Dr Frankenstein/The Creature central conflict of the movie.
Also I love this channel! Among so many critics nitpicking and ranting, it's refreshing to watch Minty just being positive and enjoying sharing knowledge about movies he loves.

Another thing about Rockstar Games is that the main brothers who head the studio actually came from Scotland (Dundee to be exact), when the game company was known as DMA Design and made games mainly for the Amiga and Atari ST, such as Turrican & Lemmings. Weirdly the special effects for this movie were actually rendered on Amiga computers (using 3D rendering software called Lightwave, which is still being made to this day), several A4000 Amigas were used in a render farm to generate the effects. I read all about it at the time in an Amiga magazine, which hopefully someone still has, as I got rid of all my Amiga magazines.

The effects were also used in one of The Mind's Eye CG movies produced by Steven Churchill of Odyssey Productions and Miramar Productions. The order of these movies is as follows:
The Mind's Eye: A Computer Animation Odyssey (1990)
    Beyond the Mind's Eye (1992)
The Gate to the Mind's Eye (1994)
Odyssey Into The Mind's Eye (1996)

    # 5. There are two versions. I clicked this video to see if this was mentioned. It was.. Good job.
I found the second version by accident years ago.
I was watching TV, Cable, think it was cinemax or something. I knew it was lawnmower man, but didn't remember any of the footage.
What the hell, what the hell, is what I kept saying. I watched the whole thing.
The directors cut with the 40 extra minutes makes the movie entirely different, and way better than the theatrical release. Completes and details the story better.
If you are fan of this movie, you owe it to yourself to find this director's cut and check it out. Good luck finding it.

The computer effects in Lawnmower Man are mindblowing and true works of art. Johnny Neumonic is another one like it. (anyone know of any more? I'm always looking out for them).
