Office Space is practically a documentary it's so relatable. I'm so glad they were able to keep in the printer scene and the gangsta rap, it just fits perfectly.
I love that it was filmed in my home State of Texas.....these characters remind me of people I knew and worked with back in Texas. In the beginning of the movie, I laughed because that traffic is representative of MOPAC and I 35 in Austin.

Another little known fact: they wanted Milton’s stapler to be red,only swingline didn’t produce a red stapler so the prop department painted a black stapler red. Then when the movie became so wildly popular demand was so high that they started making red stapler’s.

Bless you for covering one of my favorites! Ages ago I worked for a subsidiary of Tyco International when this movie came out. The list of comparisons to the movie is endless, but my best personal experience was getting a free townhouse for 7 months. True story....I was put there during a trainee/temporary phase while the company decided where to put me. Tycoon laid off everyone that knew I was there, except for me and my boss....but they never looked to see if anyone was still living there. Monthd later, they negotiated their way out of the leases and sent in the movers to take out the rented furniture. Oops! Someone is living in this one! I got an angry call from a corporate lawyer at my desk.....wondering how in the hell I was living in one of the town houses. I explain the situation, who gave me the keys, etc. I was told I had one week to move out or I would owe them for the cost of the townhouse lease and the furniture. I went from a two bedroom townhouse with no bills to living on a co-workers couch 😂
My speech teacher from NEO in Miami Oklahoma was the secretary who walked away and let Milton into Lumbergs office! I still have the tiny red swingline stapler she gave me 20 years ago ❤❤❤

That scene was totally awesome, but Peter’s dream courtroom scene where where Samir and Michael are sentenced to federal, pound-me-in-the-a** prison had me laughing so hard, I honestly thought I was going to pass out in the movie theatre
He was also great playing a dick in the Vacation remake with Ed Helms. When he says to Helms who plays adult Rusty "Why don't you and your and family go fuck yourselves?" I just couldn't get enough of it and I LMAO so hard I was crying. His delivery of that line and the way he says it is spot on perfect.
Yes! When anyone is hired into our department we tell them to watch Officer Space or 90% of our jokes will go over their head. Especially when our boss tells us we have come in on Saturday.

I just bought one this week. I was excited to find one while replacing my crappy hand me down, no longer working stapler. Bought it as a novelty because of this movie but it has proven to be a good sturdy stapler so far.

One of the funniest bits to me was when Peter told Michael that he was getting fired, and Michael Said "I actually told those fudge packers I liked Michael Bolton's music." And Peter say, "Aw, now that just isn't right" as if that was really the worst thing about it. I actually saw a video here on YT where the singer Michael Bolton actually reenacted scenes from the movie playing the Michael Bolton character making cracks against him. I am not a fan of Michael Bolton's music, but the fact that he did that, to me anyway, shows he's a good sport. Besides, he's not the only singer to be made made in to a running joke in a comedy. In the movie, License to Drive, Frank Sinatra was butt of many jokes.
I still use the term "assclown" to this day. Apparently the term was suggested by David Hermans wife at the time. I am eternally grateful. It's just such a beautiful insult.

We watched this a LOT once it finally came out on DVD. Oddly enough, it became our (then) 8-year-old son's favorite movie. I have no idea why he related to a movie about being stuck in a dead-end job, but he was a unique child. He would watch it over and over. We had to cut him off when he got into trouble for swearing at school, but were very happy to let him have it back once he had proved that he could control what he said in public. And in front of his grandparents. That has proved to be a VERY valuable lesson.
The road used in the opening scene is the exact road I am about to take to work right this minute. I also had a friend that lived in Peter and Lawrence's apartment complex. This movie is legendary.

What I like about both Office Space and King of the Hill is that the humor is more subtle rather than just being all out raunchy and being reliant on sex jokes or gross out/bathroom humor like most 90's comedies. I heard the character, Lawrence who was Peter's neighbor in the movie was inspired by a friend Mike Judge had back in Texas, who was a part time mechanic who made more money than Mike did at Silicon valley.
And you see, that's something that society/media never tells you, that you can make great money in blue collar work. My parents pushed me to college, because they fell for the big lie. I'm making fairly good money now, still not six figures, but it only took over 30 years to get there (+4 for college).
Surprised you didn't mention the sculpture outside the front door of the building. It's subtle, because the camera never dwells on it, but it's literally a square peg being driving into a round hole.
A colleague and I went out and bought red Swingline staplers which we put in prominent positions on our desks. Just a little bit of a warning not to mess with us, cuz we'll burn the place down. Most people never got the joke, but the expression of delight on the faces of those that understood why there was a shiny red Swingline stapler on my desk were priceless.
I used to hear different people I worked with, quote Office Space, but I hadn't seen it. Every time that I asked was it good, they would say no. But they'd often quote it some more with workers later. It normally got smiles and laughs. Many years later, when I'd hear it quoted, I'd ask if it was a good movie. Now they say yes, it's a classic. I finally saw it and now I know what they meant. It's not necessarily what you usually go to the movies for, but it hits a lot of the beats you see in common work life. It's classic.
As someone who worked in a couple of those 1990s "cube farm" tech companies, I appreciated this brilliant parody right from the start. I can understand, though, how the humor would be less accessible to those without that experience.
I watched Office Space and immediately become a huge fan. I can't imagine a world without this movie. In my opinion all of the actors were perfectly cast. Every single one of them! Mike Judge is a creative genius and the world is a better place with him in it! Glad to see that the real Michael Bolton took it all in as just some good humor at his expense. I loaned the first copy of the movie that I bought to a family member and never saw it again. So I bought a second one and a friend borrowed it and I never saw it again either. I am currently on my third purchase of this movie which I watch when I need a pick me up. Thanks Mike Judge!!

I was pumped to see this in the theater when it was released just based on Mike Judge. I swear, in the US, it only showed for maybe 2 weeks, so I missed it. The first time it was available on PPV, I recorded it and shared it with all of my friends.
I worked for an IT company called Inacom when Office Space came out. Admittedly, I didn't hate my job but the similarities were uncanny. The name of the company, of course. We had a supervisor named John Wood who would walk around, making everyone feel uncomfortable and always had coffee with him and would set it down before going off on some story nobody wanted to hear. We had a guy named Horst that kind of reminded us of Milton. We lost about about 15 people to a competing company so when the stories of Office Space motivating many people to leave the jobs they were unhappy with, that was definitely the icing on the cake. Absolutely LOVE Office Space!

I started my career in IT in 1995, and my first job was in a building layout so much like the one in the movie. I went to this movie in the theaters and even took my teenage brother to see it, and we both loved it so much (he went into IT as well). And for a movie made in 1999, it still holds up very well today, though it helps that several on the cast became pretty well known since then.
Not that it matters, but as a point of clarification, the opening traffic scene is filmed in Dallas - specifically, the stretch of 635 between 75 and 35, a route I used to begrudgingly drive daily back in the day.
Saw it in theaters and loved every second of it. I worked temp and IT jobs in Silicon Valley from 1994-2008, so much of this movie hits home right down to the TPS reports.
And actually, Peter wasn't even assigned the reports, just the report COVERS! Talk about companies' priorities being so out of whack! I've seen this - mostly in the govt. sector but also in the private sector - a lot of organizations are more interested in process than results.

Gary Cole is a criminally underrated actor. He's played roles that are all over the place in terms of the character types and he does them all so well that when you see him in other movie you don't even recognize that he's the guy you saw in that other movie.
Also, as I was going to business school when that movie came out EVERY business professor LOVED this movie...some with extreme passion at how accurate it was.

The whole story of the Red stapler is a cool story in itself. The fact that Swingline didn't make a red version, but after the movie it became their biggest selling stapler of all time.
During my second tour of Afghanistan i discovered this movie after several days of the same thing. Watching it daily for months changed my whole outlook on life. The message sunk in I was able to let things go. My whole outlook became more positive because i didn't harbor ill will or retain bad feelings. This movie will always be on my favorites list.
I worked in Silicon Valley for 20 years. I have worked at inefficient companies like Initech. Nike being most like Initech (I had 3 bosses). Also, my day was usually done by 11AM and I would just online shop or space out. I bought my Compaq laptop in 1999 with a DVD player just so I could watch Office Space while I flew to Washington D.C.
No joke the destruction of the copy machine inspired 2 of my friends to start destroying old electronics and tvs and stuff with baseball bats. They made videos of it. Also we live in Texas. Love the movie coupled with Fight Club and the Matrix it really inspires a certain way of life.

Yes! When anyone is hired into our department we tell them to watch Officer Space or 90% of our jokes will go over their head. Especially when our boss tells us we have come in on Saturday.
Another interesting point. Swingline never actually made a red stapler. But after the movie came out, they started selling red staplers, and even made an “Office Space” Special Edition stapler.
I just bought one this week. I was excited to find one while replacing my crappy hand me down, no longer working stapler. Bought it as a novelty because of this movie but it has proven to be a good sturdy stapler so far.

One of the funniest bits to me was when Peter told Michael that he was getting fired, and Michael Said "I actually told those fudge packers I liked Michael Bolton's music." And Peter say, "Aw, now that just isn't right" as if that was really the worst thing about it.
I actually saw a video here on YT where the singer Michael Bolton actually reenacted scenes from the movie playing the Michael Bolton character making cracks against him.
I am not a fan of Michael Bolton's music, but the fact that he did that, to me anyway, shows he's a good sport.
Besides, he's not the only singer to be made made in to a running joke in a comedy. In the movie, License to Drive, Frank Sinatra was butt of many jokes.
I still use the term "assclown" to this day. Apparently the term was suggested by David Hermans wife at the time. I am eternally grateful. It's just such a beautiful insult.

Mike Judge is an absolute legend in my book for creating two of my favorite shows: Beavis and Butthead & King of the Hill.🎂
I'm firmly in the target generation for Beavis and Butthead, but I liked King of the Hill more. Season 1, Episode 1, Hank Hill believes in climate change.
And man, he's a regular Mel Blanc in creating all those unique voices!

We watched this a LOT once it finally came out on DVD. Oddly enough, it became our (then) 8-year-old son's favorite movie. I have no idea why he related to a movie about being stuck in a dead-end job, but he was a unique child. He would watch it over and over. We had to cut him off when he got into trouble for swearing at school, but were very happy to let him have it back once he had proved that he could control what he said in public. And in front of his grandparents. That has proved to be a VERY valuable lesson.
My oldest daughter loved this movie too. She started watching it when she was 3 - we had no idea why.

One of my favorites is a lil Mike Judge movie called Idiocracy.
What I like about both Office Space and King of the Hill is that the humor is more subtle rather than just being all out raunchy and being reliant on sex jokes or gross out/bathroom humor like most 90's comedies.
I heard the character, Lawrence who was Peter's neighbor in the movie was inspired by a friend Mike Judge had back in Texas, who was a part time mechanic who made more money than Mike did at Silicon valley.
And you see, that's something that society/media never tells you, that you can make great money in blue collar work. My parents pushed me to college, because they fell for the big lie. I'm making fairly good money now, still not six figures, but it only took over 30 years to get there (+4 for college).
Surprised you didn't mention the sculpture outside the front door of the building. It's subtle, because the camera never dwells on it, but it's literally a square peg being driving into a round hole.

A colleague and I went out and bought red Swingline staplers which we put in prominent positions on our desks. Just a little bit of a warning not to mess with us, cuz we'll burn the place down. Most people never got the joke, but the expression of delight on the faces of those that understood why there was a shiny red Swingline stapler on my desk were priceless.
I used to hear different people I worked with, quote Office Space, but I hadn't seen it. Every time that I asked was it good, they would say no. But they'd often quote it some more with workers later. It normally got smiles and laughs. Many years later, when I'd hear it quoted, I'd ask if it was a good movie. Now they say yes, it's a classic. I finally saw it and now I know what they meant. It's not necessarily what you usually go to the movies for, but it hits a lot of the beats you see in common work life. It's classic.
As someone who worked in a couple of those 1990s "cube farm" tech companies, I appreciated this brilliant parody right from the start. I can understand, though, how the humor would be less accessible to those without that experience.

I watched Office Space and immediately become a huge fan. I can't imagine a world without this movie. In my opinion all of the actors were perfectly cast. Every single one of them!
Mike Judge is a creative genius and the world is a better place with him in it! Glad to see that the real Michael Bolton took it all in as just some good humor at his expense.
I loaned the first copy of the movie that I bought to a family member and never saw it again. So I bought a second one and a friend borrowed it and I never saw it again either. I am currently on my third purchase of this movie which I watch when I need a pick me up. Thanks Mike Judge!!

I was pumped to see this in the theater when it was released just based on Mike Judge. I swear, in the US, it only showed for maybe 2 weeks, so I missed it. The first time it was available on PPV, I recorded it and shared it with all of my friends.
I worked for an IT company called Inacom when Office Space came out. Admittedly, I didn't hate my job but the similarities were uncanny. The name of the company, of course. We had a supervisor named John Wood who would walk around, making everyone feel uncomfortable and always had coffee with him and would set it down before going off on some story nobody wanted to hear. We had a guy named Horst that kind of reminded us of Milton. We lost about about 15 people to a competing company so when the stories of Office Space motivating many people to leave the jobs they were unhappy with, that was definitely the icing on the cake. Absolutely LOVE Office Space!

I received the Office Space Deluxe DVD box set, which I think came with the mug. Either way, I broke mine and am very sad about it.

Mike Judge is a low key genius and someone that would be great to have beer with.
I started my career in IT in 1995, and my first job was in a building layout so much like the one in the movie. I went to this movie in the theaters and even took my teenage brother to see it, and we both loved it so much (he went into IT as well). And for a movie made in 1999, it still holds up very well today, though it helps that several on the cast became pretty well known since then.

Not that it matters, but as a point of clarification, the opening traffic scene is filmed in Dallas - specifically, the stretch of 635 between 75 and 35, a route I used to begrudgingly drive daily back in the day.

Saw it in theaters and loved every second of it. I worked temp and IT jobs in Silicon Valley from 1994-2008, so much of this movie hits home right down to the TPS reports.
And actually, Peter wasn't even assigned the reports, just the report COVERS! Talk about companies' priorities being so out of whack! I've seen this - mostly in the govt. sector but also in the private sector - a lot of organizations are more interested in process than results.

This is a perfect movie. It is funny and unique with a relatively unknown cast. Plus, it encapsulates a moment and place in time that resonated with office workers around the world. The movie still resonates. Office Space remains one of my all time favorite films

Gary Cole is a criminally underrated actor. He's played roles that are all over the place in terms of the character types and he does them all so well that when you see him in other movie you don't even recognize that he's the guy you saw in that other movie.

The whole story of the Red stapler is a cool story in itself. The fact that Swingline didn't make a red version, but after the movie it became their biggest selling stapler of all time.
During my second tour of Afghanistan i discovered this movie after several days of the same thing.
Watching it daily for months changed my whole outlook on life. The message sunk in I was able to let things go. My whole outlook became more positive because i didn't harbor ill will or retain bad feelings.
This movie will always be on my favorites list.
I worked in Silicon Valley for 20 years. I have worked at inefficient companies like Initech. Nike being most like Initech (I had 3 bosses). Also, my day was usually done by 11AM and I would just online shop or space out.
I bought my Compaq laptop in 1999 with a DVD player just so I could watch Office Space while I flew to Washington D.C.
The Michael Bolton thing reminds me of how Beavis and Butthead basically killed Winger by having Stuart wear a Winger shirt.

No joke the destruction of the copy machine inspired 2 of my friends to start destroying old electronics and tvs and stuff with baseball bats. They made videos of it. Also we live in Texas. Love the movie coupled with Fight Club and the Matrix it really inspires a certain way of life.
