    I just had this diagnosed on my '12 Optima Hybrid. I had to look this up and came to your video and it totally explains this issue THANK YOU! The repair quote was above CAD$500. Not a mechanic so I will consider getting it done for my peace of mind and driving enjoyment. I was told it's not a safety issue. :D

    Thank you for the video was really helpful, My grandsons and myself have just done my 2012 hyundai i40 1.7diesel estate, was a bit of a pain but well worth it no clunking noise now and no steering wobble under braking which i didnt find any comments about in any other threads, so if you have a steering knock and steering wheel wobble you can bet its that part. that wants changing and not the £400 + vat knuckle joint that hyundai wanted just for the part. I just did one of these last week and you don't need to remove the whole assembly. I happen to have the correct tools that made it easy and only took less than an hour. Just take the column loose so it can drop down to access the motor screws.

    I noticed that the '13 Elantra (3rd video) also had the airbag light on. Is that a possible symptom that could manifest from needing the coupler replaced?
    I've been tolerating the steering wheel for some time but just recently did my airbag light turn on when making turns, and only goes away if i drive straight for some time, only to come back when turning.
    When you repaired that Elantra did you happen to see if replacing the coupler also dealt away the airbag light??

    This was helpful, but I have run into a problem on my Right Hand Drive Elantra 2013 AUTO. Got all the way to the pivot pin bolt at the back of the column, got it loose and out about half to 2/3 of the way when the bolt head hits into the brake pedal mounting bracket. It just does not clear past the bracket by a few mm. Did you have a similar issue and have a workaround fix perhaps?

    I have a 17 elantra limited, and im having issues with the steering column, however, the noise isnt as pronounced as it was in the vid, and it feels like a clunking noise coming from WITHIN the column whilst turning the steering wheel with or without moving the vehicle. Based on other video's I was sure its the coupler now I'm not too sure. You are the only video I've seen that addresses the possibly of the issue do to something else. Appreciate it... A questions I have is at the same time I noticed the side to side clunking I also noticed there is a vibrating/rattling sound coming from under the steering wheel. Any idea of the two are related? Just weird to me that it happened at the same time. I have no issues with ball joints, shocks/struts, steering wheel(drives straight) so not sure what the sound is. It only occurs sometimes when I drive over rocking road and but not when I hit dips. Sounds to me like there is something loose underneath and just banging around. Either way appreciate the video.

    • @megatonesilva6546
      @megatonesilva6546 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it's possible.......makes things more frustrating, but definately possible. I've replaced this steering damper bushing on atleast 200 different Hyundai/Kia vehicles. Many different vehicles without taking the steering column completely out of the vehicle. You still gotta unbolt the steering column from the dash, the steering wheel will rest on the seat. Jack up the front of the car so that the wheels are off the ground. Have someone outside the car put their hands on the tires to turn them to the left while you turn the steering wheel AND steering column to the left.......just a little bit. Enough so that the electric steering motor is accessible.
      Another way to do it without having to jack up the front of the car would be to remove the front seat so that the column drops down further with the steering wheel resting on the floor (rather than up higher on the seat.

    How long does a new bushing typically last after repair? Do you have to keep doing this like every two years for the life of the vehicle?

      If you do wheel alignment and balancing every 10k kilometers, you should be fine

    Would be really great full if you can answer this, so up untill I watched this video I thought it was my little plastic coupler I needed to replace but I got under the steering wheel abs checked the uni joint abs it sounds really cluncky in there , how do I fix that problem , you dident seem to elaborate on that

    • @zeRaxx
      @zeRaxx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, I'm having the same exact issue - did you manage to diagnose it? I'm not 100% sure of where the noise is coming from. I have heard another guy on TH-cam say to hold onto the uni joint/steering shaft and see if you can feel the knocking while turning the wheel. I can feel the knocking and it also sounds like it's coming from the lower uni joint but I am not sure. If you hold the steering shaft do you feel the knock? You can also try putting your head next to the pedals under the dash while turning the wheel to see if sound is coming from below or above where the motor is? Let me know if you end up fixing it! Good luck!

      @Jkstudioshq 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zeRaxx hey, I got under the steering wheel and checked out the uni joint, if you focus on where the coupler should be it sounds like it’s coming from there , but also when you look at the uni joint it sounds like the noise is there aswell , I will have to closely inspect it abit more , thanks for your comment!

    • @zeRaxx
      @zeRaxx 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Jkstudioshq Thanks for the update :) Yeah it's quite hard to tell where it's coming from. I think I might aswell just try to replace the motor coupling/bushing today and if that doesn't fix it, then nothing else I can do apart from taking it to a garage to get it looked at/diagnosed... Check out the bolts that keep the uni joints connected, they could be loose and might just need tightening. Did you also try holding your hand on the steering shaft and turning the wheel - was there any vibration? Keep me updated if you find out anything else! :)

    • @Jkstudioshq
      @Jkstudioshq 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zeRaxx will keep you updated , I have a coupler coming in the mail , I will look into if further tomorrow and let you know the outcome 😄

    • @zeRaxx
      @zeRaxx 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Jkstudioshq I fixed it!! Took me a couple of hours as I've never really done something to this scale and struggled with getting the bolt at the back out (that's holding the back of the steering column up) and then putting it back in and getting it to bite on the threads... But apart from that wasn't too hard! Could do it in 30 minutes now probably. Steering feels a lot nicer now though, worth the effort in my opinion! What car do you have - I did this on an i40.

    There is an extended warranty (TSB) for this problem with the MDPS steering coupler 10 yrs/
    100k miles. I just got my 2013 Sonata fixed for free by the dealer. Also for 2015 - 2017 Sonata the warranty has been extended to 15 yrs /150k miles. The warranty covers original and subsequent owners. Just do a search for Hyundai TSBs.

    • @newtnevesyt4641
      @newtnevesyt4641 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's no danger. The coupler isn't inside the steering column, it's adjacent to it, between the column and the motor that enables the power steering. Even if the motor itself were to fall off while you were driving, the worst that would happen is it would take some muscle to turn the wheel -- similar to losing engine power with hydraulic steering.
