    I finally took the time to go for it yesterday, and everything worked out great. That aggravating clattering noise I used to get when I went over bumps is gone, and steering feels firm. It might have been easier if I’d dropped the steering column, but I wanted to avoid the potential issues others have had with that. So, I followed this video's process.
    It took some work and persistence, but I’m glad I did it this way. It took me an hour and 45 minutes, a little sweat and $1.20 for the part. Thanks to everybody who contributed info and advice on this!

    It cost me $500 for a simple fix. None of the local shops were willing to do it because they thought it was a complicated process. Thanks

    Oh my... Thank you x 5 gazillion. You have saved my sanity because that noise has been driving me insane for a little over a month with every bump in the road and every turn of the steering wheel. I've had someone tell me the steering column needed to potentially be replaced to fix the issue. That I'm sure is not cheap repair. I was actually lurking the Veloster Forum for the fitment size for dual transmission gear shift knob for 2013 Base model when I coincidentally ran across a reply that shared the link to your video. So freaking stoked that I clicked on that link. My husband will be in total disbelief when I hand him the part in a couple of days, share this video with him & tell him all he has to do is replace this one small part on my Veloster to make me the (even more so) happiest wife in the world. I've already done the most difficult part.... Identifying the problem & ordering the correct part, of course you really deserve all of the credit. So again thank you for taking the time to create informative videos that make auto repairs easier for those of us that aren't (auto) mechanically inclined but can follow well given instructions. Can't donate a whole lot right now but hopefully every little bit will help.

    Love these “do it yourself” videos. My 2013 Elantra had same problem. Hyundai said it was NOT covered. Your video points out a few “hidden” screws I would have missed, and I would never have known about the torque 30 tool needed until after you have dropped the steering column! My Elantra has adjustable steering column so it was a little different at back. One large bolt the column pivots on. The “hook” is in back. Unbolting the fuse box helps you get to the motor easier, but I did NOT unplug anything. You don’t need to. The less you disturb the better! Don’t forget to center the wheel BEFORE disconnecting the battery. Thanks again you saved me $350

      This is a long shot but if you happen to read this: Any chance you can go into more detail on the last bolt that lets it drop in your model? I have the same model and it doesn’t drop all the way like in this video but I think I saw the bolt you’re talking about when I was under there. I was too worried to remove it though.

    I am a hyundai technician, just a little heads up. There is a warranty extension for this coupler, to 100,000 miles.
    Also, there’s no reason to remove the cluster or the smart junction box (fuse box). Just remove the two 12mm bolts and two 12mm nuts to drop the steering column. Way easier and faster. Take care.

    Great video, and very helpful comments from others. My daughter owned 2, 2011 and 2014 Sonata Sedans. Both vehicles had this issue after about 90K miles and 110K miles. Hyundai covering the costs of this repair for vehicles under warranty up to 10 years after purchase or 100K miles is negligent. 100K miles is sparse on today's cars that can easily have well over 200K miles with proper maintenance.

    I did mine a few weeks ago all by myself. I have to drop the whole steering assembly to gain an easy access to the motor. You will also need a jack to assist you in lifting the steering assembly to its original mounting spot. It was well worth my time to replace a $3.00 part.

Then the problem got so bad we were afraid to drive the car. Take it to the dealer and tell them to fix or you will sue them. Worked for us. My 2012 Elantra allowed me to complete 90% of the disassembly as shown in the video....however, the steering column refused to drop to the seat level...... the motor part hindered by a cross a/c conduit piping running horizontal behind the instrument panel. The conduit prevent the column from dropping far enough to allow me access to unscrew the (3) T-30 bolts .... smh! Perfect video. I'm second owner so of course it isn't covered and going to have to try this out myself. 1 question... At the same time I noticed the side to side clunking I also noticed there is a vibrating/rattling sound coming from under the steering wheel. Any idea of the two are related? Just weird to me that it happened at the same time. I have no issues with ball joints, shocks/struts, steering wheel(drives straight) so not sure what the sound is. It only occurs sometimes when I drive over rocking road and but not when I hit dips. Sounds to me like there is something loose underneath and just banging around. Either way appreciate the video.

Is there any way to check to see if the dealer is lying about whether it is covered. I used the NHTSA website to check the VIN for recalls, but none were reported. However, I keep seeing people saying that their Hyundai dealer covered the repair. Mine said it would be $350.

    What is the part number for a Kia Optima hybrid 2011?

  • @zichragland8880
    @zichragland8880 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just got off the phone with the Hyundai dealership and they will replace this free even if you are not the original owner as long as the vehicle is under 100K miles. The wording he used when reading it out loud was "and subsequent owner." Use this link - autoservice.hyundaiusa.com/TXX7/MicroSiteTemplate/MicroSiteTemplateVINValidate/2687 to enter your VIN # to see if your car qualifies before you call the dealer.

    I have the same clunking noise in my steering wheel when i turn it left to right on my 2011 KiA Optima so i know this part is what i need. Question: i also have a very bad vibration in the steering column when i hit any bumps or potholes when i'm driving. Is this vibration because of the same worn part or is there something else i need to look for while i have all of this torn down?

    • @OzMechanics

      Yep that little part causes the vibration as well

    Definitely have this issue with my 2012. I also have a slight front tire shake when driving above 60mph. The shake gets worse above 75 so I tend to ease off on the pedal when it does. It's also way more noticeable in temperatures above 30 degrees F. At first I thought it was due to unbalanced tires, but now I'm not so sure. Could this one flexible coupling cause both issues?

    • @doublebulbing
      @doublebulbing 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      put your front tires on the rear and see what changes

    • @aaliyahscravings7938
      @aaliyahscravings7938 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had shaking when going over 60mph and it was because I needed a mount and balance along with a wheel alignment. That fixed the shaking whEn going over 60mph but there’s still a steering shaking problem when turning the wheel and going over bumps so it’s a separate issue.

    Is this a manufacturer defect, recall, or under warranty?? I have the same problem, I have a 2011 Sonata with 37k miles, please help! Will the dealer cover this and how do I get them to do it, I only have 37k miles, this should not happen, this is a safety thing , my steering! :-(

    • @gentoolive

      I also have a 2011 Sonata. Be aware that the 2011 Sonata has a Engine recall, my engine blew at 109000 miles. Dealership had to replace for free even though it was out of warranty.

      Rina it's not a safety issue but you can have it replaced for free under the extended warranty Hyundai offers of 10 years 100,000 miles. Just contact your local dealer. If they give you a hard time, tell them to refer to service bulletin 17-ST-001.

    I have an Elantra and I have the exact same problem and was told it was my intermediate shaft and and I replaced it for nothing... Ok my question is would I need to align the column or steering or something when replacing the coupler and do I need any special tools?

    • @OzMechanics
      @OzMechanics  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      just make sure when doing the job to not rotate the steering wheel full turns when its off. and for tools what makes the job easier is having smaller hands and arms. no special tools needed

    Great video. I have the same steering knocking sound on my Hyundai i40 Cw 2012, 1.7 CRDI 116 HP . It would be interesting to see what repair solution will give me the Hyundai Timisoara Service: to replace that rubber absorber( 15 $ ) or to replace the whole direction column ( 1000 $ ) . I'm afraid that the more expensive one will be the solution proposed by them.
