Thank you so much! There is actually an extended warranty for this, 10 yrs or 100,000, Extended Warranty TXX7, For Elantra years 2007-2015. I received the notice in the mail in year 2017 from Hyundai. Made appointment with dealer to get this fixed!
Bruh.. Still dirty from just finishing this job on a '13. This vid is great for the disassembly. Thanks @Stupid! Tip for the column pivot bolt going back in- There's a flat, horizontal piece of metal, center of where the pivot holes are in the column, facing the engine bay. That flat piece mates up to a rectangle hole in the bracket that the pivot bolt goes through. Stick that in and lift the whole steering column up until you can place the TILT bolt in at the wheel end of the column. Then, go back under and get the pivot bolt aligned. I thought I was going to die under there until I spotted that detail.
Great video, just bought a 2014 Kia forte and it started doing this on the ride home. Was pretty scared about what the issue was until I watched this video. Great explaining as well!!!!
@@mattya7023I just did this and it wasn’t easy at all. Took me about 3 hours give or take but I’m no mechanic. Hardest part is getting that steering column back up and getting that back bolt back in. That alone took most of the time.
Thanks from the UK. My electric power steering problem is that I have non whatsoever. I've replaced the steering angle sensor as that is what two different scan tools have shown as the issue ( c1260 fault code ) but it still has no power steering. Further investigation to do
Excellent video, thanks! I replaced the coupler in my 2013 Elantra today after watching this video. The only comment I would make is that I tried to reassemble the forward pivot bolt after putting a temporary pin through the adjuster bolt slot to hold the wheel up. You pretty much have to poke the forward end of the column up into position FIRST and then the pivot bolt hole lines up as soon as the wheel is raised into place. Made all the difference after fighting the column while trying to line up the pivot bolt to the column hole.
Thanks for this video! IMO this is the best video out there for this, showing a more minimal straight forward procedure. Really appreciate it. Just finished successfully replacing the coupler on my Elantra.
2012 Elantra with 17k miles 😂 I knew the car was cheap but a replacement at 17k is wild! Great video, 3 hours later and maybe we’ll get another 20k miles in before the new OEM coupler goes out ;) I’d like to think dry rotting of the plastic may be a small factor due to age?
This should be recalled by Hyundai as just about every Hyundai cars have this exact problem. My 2012 Elantra has the exact problem as well, so thanks for sharing your video. After watching this video, I will go to get that $10 part and will try to install it myself.
That was smart how you explained the reason for the noise. It's not the moving back and forth that is causing it. It is the motor activating and moving in that space that is no longer filled by the coupler since it has basically disintegrated.
I had a hard time getting the pivot point lined back up, and overall took about 3 hours, most of that time being putting everything back together, so a step by step there would be appreciated. But that said, this was super helpful!
I’ve been looking for a video to really help me determine if that was the problem. I like the way you verified and explained everything. I do wish it was the first video that popped up. Thanks man

I am thinking of buying a used car that has this issue. I wanted to see how complicated this project is prior to purchasing. Fyi your calming voice makes me feel that this fix is actually possible for non-mechanics like me!
Its funny you say that because I hate the sound of my voice but I have soo many people comment that its calming and I should narrate a book or something
I know this is about the steering coupler but the real work was putting that steering column assembly back on. the coupler was simple, but the rest of the work was putting that thing back on. You either need to jack it up or have someone working with you who can put in place while holding it up. Also if your steering wheel is out of place after bringing it down (all the way turned to the side) it might be locked in place and you have to put the key in and unlock the steering wheel. The steering column might be out of place too--unlock the steering. But I finally got it down tho. Made sure I checked everything is in place before putting everything back together. THanks for the video.
This is a great video. After watching it, I decided this was just a little more than I could handle, so I took it to the dealer. Hyundai did a warranty extension for this, but you are out of luck if your car is more than 10 years old or has more than 100k miles. The repair cost me $395 plus tax.
I talked to corporate customer service they said this isn't a safety issue. Thats why they didn't have a recall on it. I don't have $400 for dealership to fix it. I wonder if you can drive it without replacing it due to its not a safety issue.

I am having trouble getting the column aligned with the bracket in order to insert the main bolt, and I expect the bracket assembly for the height adjustment will be similarly challenging. This is certainly the most difficult repair I have ever done. I hope I can get it done.
great video, im a little unclear on one comment you made when you placed your knee against the tire. Are you saying that if I move the steering and have my knee on the wheel that I should be able to feel that clunk at my knee? Currently when I move my steering wheel I can visually see my tire move slightly but I do not feel that steering issue transferred to my knee.
So sometimes when an inner tie rod fails you get a lot of movement in the joint. The joint is a ball and socket which can make a noise exactly like the failed rubber piece replaced in the video. If both tires wiggle slightly then most likely it is this rubber bushing because that tiny steering wheel movement was enough to affect change in the tire. If you noticed one tire did not wiggle then a piece of linkage may be worn out.
Thanks for sharing 👍 ❤it. I ask earlier about the elantra electric steering problems. Why steering EPS light comes on. My wife said she was at a drive true and the steering wheel turn 360 degrees and the front wheels did not turn. Your explanation is spot on.thanks must. I think I can fix it...💯👍👍👍

very informative video, thanks for the explanation and tips on what to look out for! 1st, dum question, do you need to disconnect both cables on the battery or just the "negative"? 2nd dum question, after you have reconnected all the terminals, does anything need to be reprogrammed? The dealership told me the price was $800 to replace because some reprogramming was necessary?!! After watching 3 videos including yours, no one mentions anything about reprogramming! Thank you again!!
@@AlbertoSanchez-r4q never heard of that before! It’s no different from having a dead battery. You will have to reprogram your radio stations sometimes. And only the negative is needed
hey sir thanks for the video and was your steering wheel locked when you had this problem? I have the same problem in my 2018 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid car, in addition, sometimes my steering wheel is locked at slow speeds and there is a red steering wheel failure in the dash, when I stop and start it back the engine, my steering wheel works well but the sound continues, mechanic told me that only the parts will cost $2,300. should I try this $10 part?
A recall should be issued for this part because mine was replaced and ever since it was replaced I have a clunking sound when I turn my steering wheel so I am not satisfied with the job that was done to my 2012 Hyundai Elantra limited. So I might have to take it apart myself to see what my mechanic did .
Could a faulty steering flex coupler cause the EPS light to turn on? As I had this issue for a while but one morning I started my car and the light just turned on. Power steering fluid is good power steering works but clunk is always there. I also removed the steering shaft u joint thinking that was the issue only to realize that the clunk was still there. Let me know please.
Okay. So I did this last weekend. Leave in the first bolt holding the locking mechanism and remove the pivot bolt first. The weight makes it difficult to unscrew and eventually rescrew the pivot bolt in such a tight spot. Also, when taking out the steering wheel screws reset the steering wheel back to 12 o’clock. It can the be slowly pulled off and disconnected from the hub/spindle making it easier to remove the hex bolts on the motor housing. This comes with a warning. If you turn the wheel to far left or right, at any point off the hub, or resetting it back on the spindle, you run the risk of pulling or tearing the airbag tape. This will cause the airbag to be no-op and make the light come on. Hence no passing a state inspection but that a whole different video. Also, make sure you have some bearing grease available. You will see where it goes ie spindle, locking mechanism, and floor steering linkages. Tools. Be sure you have a quarter size deep 14mm socket and a T wrench. The big standard socket workers when you start taking off the pivot bolt but as it unscrews it becomes very crowded under the dash. You will need a shorter, smaller wrench to continue the removal. I’ve never done this an it took slightly longer than 4 hours but bear in mind I went to the store to get the deep socket in this time as well. Good luck and happy trails!
My 09 Elantra has been making that noise for a bit and this weekend the EPS and ESC OFF LIGHTS came on. Would that bad coupler be the reason for the lights to come on? And if I understood correctly it's not a safety issue that's going to cause me to lose steering or anything like that? I plan on fixing it but will probably be another week or 2 and just wanted to reassure myself that I won't lose my steering while I'm driving down the road this week. Or at least not because of that part of the steering anyway lol.
My Elantra '13 also seems to need this coupler which I'm looking to replace soon. But, in addition I'm also getting the Airbag light on. I wonder if this could be causing it. As when driving straight, when the electric motor doesn't engage, the light turns off then back on when making a turn.
I got a elentra and i got the same noise exactly the same one..question that problem can make ur car dont wanna turn on because sometimes i got it hit couple times under the wheel for my car can turn on...its that something you got it fix asap??
I think I'm giving up on this one! I took a while to find the 14 mm nut and been trying for a while to get it to budge. It's like it was put on with an impact wrench. I fear stripping or breaking the head from the nut.

Way to go buddy 👍
Thanks 👍
I am not sure about those lights, no lights came on this car for the steering you may have another issue going on.
Thats weird i don't think they should be connected. Maybe a wire or harness or something is moving when you turn and reconnecting the airbag wiring?
Grateful for the video, hope this resolves my issue also!
Fantastic job. TY
Thank you
06:27 where is this bolt ? (thanks for the video)
Get a long handle ratcheting socket wrench for leverage and pull down to unloosen the bolt. You can do it 😅
You should have put the part where you took the wheel adjuster bolt out to show in what order the washers and springs go in.
I agree sorry. Also my wife came out and kicked the bolt and all the washers while i was filming it
How about KIA Picanto 2012. Is it same ?
