    I have a lot of 45s. Several thousand. I'm from the age of 45s. I started getting them when I was 4 in the 50s. I love The Coasters! Man Or Astroman is great. I have 2 LPs and a few singles.
    Love 45s and I'm glad you are promoting them!

    You hit the nail right on the head. My love for 45s / 7” records mirror all your points. There are bands/groups who don’t last long enough to make a full length, and I’ve found (next to cassette demos or cassette only releases which I also love/collect) that most versions of songs on 45s that are later re-record are far better versions; this is true for most genres. Or, maybe there’s a song (like ‘Under The Milky Way’) that you can just throw on and spin to your heart’s desire without having to find the dead space between cuts like on LPs. I like Led Zeppelin, but prefer Dead Moon and first having explored them through the 45rpm format I probably wouldn’t have gone much further or have known of them (pre-internet) at all. Awesome way to discover the less prominent, yet attention deserving artists who fly under the radar. Great segment. Essential consideration for any vinyl connoisseur.

    Hi Sam 👋 - I was in alternative marketing for Arista in the 80's & the success of the single Under The Milkyway & album Starfish is my proudest achievement as it was so unexpected & so deserved by The Church. Their 🇺🇸 representative made sure I got a Gold Record which I treasure. If you ever see a Sex Pistols 45 of God Save The Queen in a plain A&M sleeve .. you are looking at a $25,000 Record ! There's a few out there .. somewhere. ✌️

    I agree. 45s are fun to collect, and sometimes you get a different edit or mix, sometimes you get a song on the flip side that's not on the album, and there were always some regional or underground artists who only did 45s and never got around to giving us an entire album. And yes, a lot of times the sound of a 45 can pack more of a punch than the album track, especially the old ones that were cut to sound good on jukeboxes and AM radio.
    There's a store in San Francisco called Rooky Ricardo's that specializes in 45s, especially 60s soul.
    also Techmoan did a great video a while back about how LPs and 45s were competing formats in the beginning (circa 1949)

      Definitely want to try and go to San Fransico in the next few years. I'm gonna have to add Rooky's to the list of places to see there. Thanks for recommending Techmoan's video I will have to check it out.

    If there’s a collection I’m going after, I’ll always keep hunting for 7-inches as a completionist. But I don’t think I’ve ever mail-ordered a new 7-inch on its own. I’ll toss it onto an order with an LP from the label. Labels have been pretty vocal about 7-inches being wastes of money to press lately. BUT… It’s still the best item to get from a band at the merch table.

    • @ts_vinyl
      @ts_vinyl  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Totally agree, especially with all the delays at the pressing plants the last few years. I can see how that would be a labels last priority. But like you said they're a great thing to get if you go see a band.

    I think 45s are more popular among collectors who are into more marginalized genres, like punk, metal, or reggae, since we're chasing after bands that didn't have label support or recording budgets. Man or Astro-Man is a great example! I think this is the first time I've seen anyone show that Harvey Gold 45, what a cool piece!

      @xcratchy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I concur. It’s major label backing vs. a D.I.Y. ethic. This could include other genres, though, such as indie rock, country, pop or what have you. I don’t think it’s exclusive to just punk, metal or reggae. But the majors put out killer stuff on 45s too.

      Also there’s a huge huge market for soul & funk 45s, especially for DJs and producers of the hip-hop world. Even the consumption & production of rap 45s has been on the rise for a while too! This reissue label Get On Down has put out some killer stuff on a 7”

    I grew up in the era of top 40 radio and 45 rpm singles. We always had our ears glued to the radio and they only played the hit singles, so naturally as a kid you bought the single, especially because you probably didn't have enough money to buy the album. And the album usually had one or two hits and the rest was covers or filler material anyway. Also, producers would find a song they thought would sell and record it with studio musicians (boring old people) and then create a fake band of attractive young people to market the record and lip sync on television. So there were a lot of one hit wonders who never had albums only 45s.

    7” are the best. Back in my analog days those 7” 33 eps were so prized by me. An album on that format made it feel more unique and special. I gave Mr Gold a listen. Akron Ohio was such a rich environment. Cleveland too! I really liked it. What you said about him and that kind of music is so true.

    Great stuff Sam,thanks for bigging up the humble 7"/45rpm 👍👍👍
    I show a fair few on my channel,a lot of them aren't particularly rare or expensive just good rockin tunes that I love to listen to etc...
    Sometimes I really cant be bothered with LPs and I'll quite happily sit down by the stereo and just flip through boxes of 7" singles,playing them and having a great time🙂
    I'll have to do a video featuring my fave singles and why they're an important part of my collection .

    Aloha Sam,
    Great Subject matter, hearing 👂 your reasons why you collect 45rpm's brought back memories, I remember in the late 1960's early 1970's my sister and I would purchase (5) 45rpm's about every 2 weeks, from Gibson department store here in Hawaii it would cost me $4.00 for 5 of them $0.77 each + 4% tax = 0.80 ea. We would make sure we didn't buy the same songs because we played it on a shared Phonograph record player yep, "Phonograh" not a stereo lol...over the years I stayed away from 45rpm's because I was listening to more hard rock music and jazz no longer listening to top 40 music. But I recall in the mid 70's buying a few 45rpm's, because the artist had a Acoustic version, John Mellencamp "Pink Houses" Acoustic Version only on the flip side of a 45rpm.
    Here in Hawaii we hardly saw picture sleeves, by the time our stores received their allotment of 45rpm's all the first pressing were done with so here in Hawaii we got 2nd pressing & up, and these didn't come with picture sleeves. Thanks for a great Video Sam. Looking forward to seeing your next video.
    Mahalo Ed

      @ts_vinyl  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Ed! You bring up another great perk of 45's with that John Mellencamp example. That some 45's offer a song or a version of a song that may not be found anywhere else.

    Collecting 7 inches can be really fun. Many times the B Sides are not found on albums or Rarities style albums. Some genres like punk, some smaller bands only released 7 inch records. Lots of times 7 inches can be less expensive than a 12 inch record.
    So two schools of thought on the 7 inch records. The first one is a customer can buy the song they really want without buying the more expensive album and save money. The second school of thought is that it is a great way to collect songs an artist wrote at a certain time in their career.
    One band I collected was Aztec Camera where I picked up everything I could find around their first two albums. In addition to the 7 inches I also collected the strange 10 inch and while there was a considerable overlap of the regular albums, the 7 inches and the 10 inch, there was enough songs that did not make it on one or the other. Sometimes 7 inch records or even CD singles had different remixes that were only available on that release and not on the album.
    Another great reason to collect 7 inch records is to really round out a collection once you have their regular albums. Sometimes a 7 inch will have songs that do not appear on any albums. I got an advanced promo copy of Jake Bugg which the songs on the 7 inch did not appear on his first album. Also the songs were very different style than what was on that album.
    It is also looking into 10 inch records too as sometimes they have songs that only appear on that EP. Depending on the band and their contract, 7 inch and 10 inch EPs were ways to put more music out there quicker for the public to consume between albums. This depends on the historical era too.
    Fun fact, albums were in fact book sized holders were a collection of 7 inch or 10 inch singles were held together. Especially before the 50s, most artists released music as singles as the 12 inch album was not commercially viable at that time.
    Long and short, collect the records that intrigue you regardless of the size. Also don't be afraid and sell or trade albums you no longer listen to or turned out to be duds. That's how you got all the used albums you own in the first place. Go for a collection of killers vs a bunch of filler albums.😎👍✨

    I don’t have a lot of 7” records. Most of them I purchased in the 70’s when I was a teenager. Standard rock tunes. I do have a Hey Jude/Revolution in the original Apple sleeve along with a Long & Winding Road / For You Blue, also in the original Apple sleeve, both from 1970. I also have a Beatles copy of Twist and Shout / There’s a Place on Tollie records from the early 60’s. I picked up all of these at a garage sale around 1976 for 10 cents each.

    Hi Sam
    45s are pure GOLD for me !
    i mean ,except 78s that i ve never known ,you need a phonograph & the sound is more than noisy,45s it's my generation format but it's the beginning of everything for the music of the modern era,i could say
    45s is specially the A side,and if it's the first single,the artist has to be right on the money,if not,his career is over before it has started,so it's magic
    when i held in my hands,Love me do/ The Beatles or These boots are made for walking / Nancy Sinatra,i know i held a piece of music history in my hands
    Some of them are real milestones in a music career,Good Vibrations/The Beach Boys is not on Pet Sounds album,Need you tonight/INXS is on Kick album but this single made the band real superstar in US & all over the world
    Morever it's a very cute,sexy item;it's the cupcake of the record industry lol
    The only problem,as treats in general,you become very addicted,there are millions & they could be outrageously expensive lol

    Hi Sam, I enjoy your channel. I grew up in the 80’s. So 45’s to us we would walk to the mall after school and dig through the 45’s. It was usually in one long box and was the top 40’s at the time. They were cheaper than buying the entire album and most importantly we would make mixed tapes with them. I’m looking at a mixed tape I made that is labeled 84’ and it has Purple Rain, Rebel Yell, Like a Virgin, 99 Red Balloons, etc… we would play the mixed tapes in our Walkman’s and cars. It was better than taking off of the radio top 40 with casey kasem and cheaper than buying the entire albums of artists. Anyways that was my experience with 45’s. I don’t collect them anymore but still have mine from when I was a kid…

  • @stack_of_records

    In the 60s people bought 45s much more and knew those songs instead of the album. Remember the juke boxes in bars and cafès... Nice one the J Mascis/Kim Gordon single. Am a Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr fan! II was a teen in the 90s... Bands like Shonen Knife, Babes in Toyland, Polvo I was heavily into too.
    Have about 500 45s... Lots of obscure punk, psych, soul and funk ... Some do need a clean. I was a year ago real lucky a musician (garage rock) had over a 1000 45s for sale... All killer and most of 'm were like 5 or 10$ and killer stuff. Rare funk, mod punk, psych you name it. He home delivered all.

    One of the reasons I don't collect 45's is because lack of cover, only US imports had cover art back in the day, no 45's manufactured here in my country had a cover. And because US imports were expensive only LP's made it into record stores. So the nostalgic value is missing. Same as today, discogs is expensive because you have to pay shipping and taxes inside the US and then again, shipping and taxes here in Guatemala, so if you spend money on discogs you only get LP's, just not worthed to get 45's. But I always get any 12" single or EP I can by my favorite artists, everytime I found those cheap, in part because of the cover art.

    MOAM for 5 bucks is a wicked deal, I saw them early on in 93, it was just OK live. For 45 positives I’d say 1/-value as far as rarity/ likely of repress vs cost. 2/- 45 RPM sounds better just because the faster speed and 3/- 45s from 70-90s were often mixed louder to cut through bar/ skate rink/ Pizza Hut noise lol I think one of the big obstacles is Store owners seem to not like them and not push them, and the modern furniture is sold to house LP size releases

    I'm a sucker for 7" records with picture sleeves because, while not rare, they were fairly uncommon in my country compared to 7" records with standard paper or plastic company sleeves. But I HATE when a song is shortened for a single. For me, a 7" record must have either the album version or something that makes the single version unique, like the 7" version of Blood, Sweat & Tears' "Spinning Wheel", which has a guitar solo not present on the album version.
