    Amazing what can be done with such a limited palette. Beautiful colors!

    I thought colours from the second palette looked familiar and it dawned on me when you started to tone down the basic flesh colours with them. They have these as makeup primers to correct redness and blemishes in skin colours! Now I know where they came from

    Also love your theory of “black” highlight. Contradictory as it sounds, it is convincingly scientific in applying coal black according to its cool nature. Marvelous.

      I think the biggest gift I was taught in college colour wise, was the only colours you could use was primary colour (Acrylics). it was the first time I ever picked up a paintbrush too. I was used to spraypaint/graffiti. We had these terrible plastic palettes to use with water in old coffee jars etc. but I'm thankful looking back, It taught me how to mix colour in a limited pallet without think about it, The only issue I have now though is a bad habit of using the same brush over a painting in oils. but my main pallet now is not far off this "zorn pallet" I just add cobalt blue hue & Vandyke brown. I'd just wish you good luck Kathleen, I good teacher will test their students. & thanks for this video, I've sub'd & liked + saved yr video, I look forward to watching more vids. Cheers man.🎨

    What a great criticism of those almost “superstitious “ opponents against the use of black. Right on the head. Thank you.

    Very good video. Just an FYI... it is a misconception that Zorn didn't use blue, but he actually did. He used cobalt blue and several tubes were found in his studio after his death. Anyway good video and I've been using this pallet for several years. Thanks

    Why not use Paynes gray instead of the black? Never seen “cold black” per se anywhere. Maybe you sell it?

    Really great demonstration! I wonder if there is any way you'd suggest to get a cool black without buying a new one? For example would mixing a ivory black with some blue do the trick? If so, what kind of mix you'd go for?

    • @RyanDelgadoArt
      @RyanDelgadoArt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure. The black I use is called "Cold Black" by Williamsburg oils, and it is basically a combination of ivory black and ultramarine blue pigments.

    I have just discovered Williamsburg oil colours and they are already my favourites. They are every bit as good as Langridge, Old Holland, Maimeri, M. Graham and William Harding, which are also excellent.

    Thx Ryan. My cousin recommended your channel. Just getting into oil painting, or painting in general. I think I've inherited some talent but a newbie. Tell me what your palette is made of.. plastic or a clear finish over wood? Appreciate your efforts

    Question: How do you keep the oil paint from seeping into the wood palette boards? i find that wood annoys me because I cannot scrape off the dry paint. Please explain. Thanx.

    • @RyanDelgadoArt
      @RyanDelgadoArt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Before I use a new wood palette that hasn't been treated, I treat it with linseed oil a few times. I've had these palettes for a long time, so the oil from my paint and medium has gradually finished the surface over time as well. Also, cleaning the palette after every painting session so you never have to worry about scraping off dried up paint.

    could one not mix one's own cool black ( burnt umber and ultramarine blue ) ?

    • @RyanDelgadoArt
      @RyanDelgadoArt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The goal for me here is to keep color mixtures as clean as possible, in other words to mix as few colors together as possible to create the tones I want. The more colors you mix together, the muddier they become. Cold black functions perfectly when using it in flesh tones, for instance. However, I probably would use something like an umber/ultramarine mix for areas of dark accent in my painting where I'm not mixing it with any other colors.

    • @eriksoderholm5889
      @eriksoderholm5889 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you look close at what the color cold black contains it is two pigments, it is a type of black and ultramarine. The same pigment code pb29 is in ultramarine.
      Wich means that its no wizardy you get a blue tone from that black color. Ofcourse i think this demonstration is great!
      Just wondering what the original black that Zorn used contains.

    • @RyanDelgadoArt
      @RyanDelgadoArt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the second pigment is Pbk9 (ivory black), which was Zorn's black of choice.

    The freaking impressionists started this nonsense about not using black.

    • @RyanDelgadoArt
      @RyanDelgadoArt  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, yes and no. True, "black" as we understand it doesn't exist as a natural pigment, but not all black pigments are cool. Some are more neutral than others, while some are noticeably warmer such as some brands of bone black or mars black. So it's important to know what type of black to use in your paintings for a given purpose.
