I find the Zorn palette endlessly fascinating. In pencil form, this is called "trois crayon." It's white, sanguine, and black. Especially when used on toned paper, this has a similar effect and can produce beautiful results. Also if you use a black that leans more blue, you can get some very subtle blues and greens by mixing with white and yellow. As it is, the portrait's eye reads as blue because it's placed next to the red of the eye socket. So amazing!
I have been drawing like that for ages I didn't realise it had a name. I use grey or brown paper and use graphite pencil to sketch, then white conte and sanguine pencil, (If you have never used a conte sanguine I recommend it, it does not adhere well and needs fixative but it is a beautiful natural rust red the white is great too) and a Japanese black brush pen. I usually add blue too with derwent watercolour pencil, this is nice because you can fade and wash with a touch of water, great for distant scenery and trees.
Wow. It's always mind boggling to me as a non-artist how someone can start with coarse slashes of seemingly random colors and end up with something so beautiful, rich, and nuanced. Thanks for sharing!
With this style it feels a bit like sculpting. Pulling positive and negative space, then adjusting tone around the edge of the larger spaces, then continuing to make smaller changes in detail. It’s like a photograph being exposed, almost, developing over time to have all the intricacy at the end. As a dabbler I also find the big slashes less scary to start with. It’s going to be honed later so the stakes aren’t as scary!
And here's the REALLY amzing thing. I'm a digital artist, and I still find it fascinating that what I started out with seems like nothing, but by the end of it (if I'm lucky and don't foul it up!) is a good picture. And when I say good, I mean within the boundaries of my ever evolving learning about the craft I have chosen, as there is no such as a PERECT piece of artwork.
We know an instructor who says if you're doing it right, a painting should look like you used more colors than you actually did. We don't know if we agree 100% but as we see here, a skilled artist can get a huge apparent range from just a few colors. The great thing about human perception is that the viewer's eye and mind will fill in the missing gaps- the presence of a color evokes its complement!
It's wonderful for me, as a Swede, to hear that a national treasure like Anders Zorn is being celebrated outside of Sweden too. I love his work. They have a very special "feel" to them. Your portrait came out absolutely beautiful! I'm in love!
Painting has always frustrated me being a moderately colorblind person but this is the first time I felt I could revisit it using this limited palette approach. Thank you for posting this.
Please revisit regardless! I've always liked art the most that shows what the artist sees, how they interpret the world around them onto paper/canvas. Impressionist smudges that become sunlight on water or a winking smile. Unexpected combinations of colour or limited palettes that somehow turn into complex skintones and shadow. I think I'm probably not the only one who'd be fascinated to see through your eyes. Art is a journey :)
This video just about made my day! I live on Zorns Udde ("Cape of Zorn"), where he was based when he painted some of his masterpieces set in the Stockholm archipelago. Naturally, his paintings hold a special place in my heart. His palette and way of capturing light - water in particular - was simply magical..! Funny, how your artistry performed half a world away can increase my gratitude for calling this beautiful place home. The wonders of art!
I know about the Zorn palette and have used it once myself, as well as watched videos on it, but it was marvelous to see the grey 'turn' blue once you'd completed the colour chart. It really shows how colours play off of each other.
This is actually the palette of Polygnotus that was used by the Ancient Greeks and also by Byzantine iconographers . All my icons are painted with this palette and it’s amazing with colours you can create. You haven’t even touched the surface of the greens and mauves you can make!
I have been an amateur artist since childhood, now 82 I still enjoy experimenting with different mediums, Recently I invested in 72 Derwent Ink Pencils and 12 ink blocks. It did not take me long to realize that although I enjoy using the medium the number of pencils was becoming a big drawback. You have helped me so much because now I realize I do not need to have them all near me (I paint from an armchair) all at the same time. Following the Zorn method of painting all I will require is white, black, and 3 colors. So much easier to handle! Thankyou!
It's the combination of your talent, knowledge and work ethic that does it for me. Also I need to learn to let go, your brushstrokes feel very unapologetic. I love it.
i keep hearing about using limited color palettes but didn't hear of zorn palette before. knowing which colors to start with is so helpful. your portrait turned out really nicely!
It’s amazing the variety of colors you can mix with just these 4 basic colors, wow. Also, the portrait turned out amazing, you are truly inspiring Jess!!
Wow, this is amazing! I wish I could understand how you (wonderful artists) decide to put lots of weird (really random looking) color blobs and a suddenly a real face is emerging from that and totally makes sense! Whaaat? How come? 😅 Oh, and zorn palette - wow, very inspiring. Thank you so much for your videos!!!❤
Never heard such valuable words, your every single word acts like a beautiful poem, your brush sings a mesmerizing melody on paper and convert your inner soul into your beautiful paintings, the way you have valued the master's precious pallet,i am sure he would be proud to found a disciple like you,you have made his pallet work so aesthetically in your work, I know my words are not able to fully described, how elegantly you have presented this whole process, but i still tried, Sending lots of smiles and laughter, Wishing you a blessed day Our jess 🤗🎨
THE LIMITED PALETTE , I FEEL THAT WITH THE LIMITED PALETTE YOU CAN GET MORE REALISTIC COLORS , THE NATURAL SENSE , RATHER THAN OVER COLORING INTHE EXAGGERATED SENSE , THE MASTER'S OF THE PALETTE OFTEN USED A LIMITED PALETTE , FOR THEIR COLORS WERE OFTEN MADE WITH ORGANIC MATERIALS THAT THEY FOUND BECAUSE PAINT WAS SO HARD TO COME BY !! Jess, you push me the most to create with your gentle approach and making art such a great way to intimate with life! Wordless, You the best! Plus you've GOT to make more Master Studies. NOTHING sparks me to draw than studying our Art Scholars work and technique.
This is ABSURD!!!!! I love the way the “bold” initial brush strokes turn into such a detailed peace in the end. Great video and amazing work! Just won a follower ❤
My medium is colored pencil but just started with gouache. I’m definitely trying this! I think it’s perfect to get to know the medium. Oh, the possibilities!
You can try the experiment and see what happens! Prussian blue is a very strong pigment so I would be careful with the amount you use. Thanks for the support and I’m so glad you enjoyed!
This was fascinating to watch...how you brought him to life...I can't wait to try this out..the range of that palette is crazy...bravo Jess...another masterpiece study!
your art is always amazing from start to an end. I just love your work and you are my inspiration. whenever I feel low while drawing I just watch your videos and all my spirits of working hard rise. yNot a single minute of your videos are boring its as interesting like painting your own art to make it more charming,
I periodically search specifically for Zorn palette videos because it's so fascinating to watch. 👍👍 for your painting! Very awesome use of the palette!
What is great about zorn is that he is master is watercolor and master of oil too. Other than turner one can not say this about any painter. They use do great in one medium only.
Jesse i really want to thank you, i swear because of you I was able to finish a whole sketchbook, looking to your sketchbook tour, you encouraged me alot, i thought it was impossible to finish a sketchbook but I guess you just need to watch the right content, so thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤❤ i would love it if you could look at the sketchbook
Extremely well done. Fantastic art, and I love the cinematic feel of this video, with the music coming in at just the right times. Great job Jess, just enthralling and a joy to watch.
WOW, Jess! Me, everytime with your videos: "Can it get better?" . Next video: "Yes, it keeps getting better". I'm not only impress with your drawings, but the energy, the joy and beauty you share. Thank you so much for feeding this space with so much love and inspiration! 🌹🌈🎨

I am not very good but been painting a while, with water colour and acrylic so far. I’m going to try that colour plan you did, it’s not too different from the colour charts but yet specific for the painting. I feel that’d be a big help to me. The palette is great. Really good video by the way ~ this style I’m going to try as well.... it seems to make things a lot easier for me yet has so much depth. Love it. I am blown away from your portrait. Gouache? Wow. You're a brillant painter. By the way: I love the Zorn Palette. A little hint for those being interested in testing it... if you replace Ivory Black with Paynes Grey you have more blueish pigments.
I absolutely love videos like this so much,!! I like learning about different artists and techniques and it's just awesome. Would love to see more like this from u too ! How cool

Absolutely beautiful. I find it amazing how a piece of art can bring such strong emotion. Watching the painting come to life was truly amazing. Thank you for sharing.
i love the nuance and depth of the piece! beautiful layering, and those warm/cool tones turned out amazing! we just experimented with the zorn palette in my painting class for the figur and it is so fun to work with
It is worth noting in his earlier work Rockwell's use of reddish limited palettes was due to limitations in printing process and as 4 color process developed he widened his palette considerably
I just love your art videos, your skill and talent have just grown with time. You videos are not just about art, but make one feel like they are on an adventure with you! Now to stop procrastinating on trying the Zorn color palette with the gouache I have.👩🏻🎨
It’s such an interesting pallet, it would be interesting to use this pallet but add in the compliments of the yellow and red to mix in those muted colors/chromatic gray but keeping it in the yellow red range.
It is amazing to me how much green and purple is available without a distinct blue! I’m sure that using a blue-leaning black helps with this as well. A lovely demonstration, thank you. :)
Beautiful work. I'll have to give this palette a try sometime. It's difficult for me to lean into muted palettes. I've lately been leaning towards a more high-key CMYK-inspired palette. Actually, I usually try to exclude black unless the colors I'm using together just are not capable of creating a dark enough value. I find it's pretty sly how Zorn utilized a cool-leaning black to help create his blue colors. Thanks for the demonstration.
What is YOUR favorite combo?
What’s a combo
@@Jurassic_Drawings combo of paints 🎨 where you chose your own colors to make your own palette...
my personal favorite color combo is a yellow-orange color and a reder leaning purple, with white and panes gray lots of fun tricks!!!
I love light pastels, such as very light green, lime green, pastel yellow etc..

amazed how those thick brush strokes came together with harmony
Wow, this is a beautiful portrait. Being a Swede I marvel at this, I never knew Zorn used this limited kind of palette.
Thanks a ton Jess :D This answered the question I was having from a long time :D
Thanks!!
I’ve had a note in my journal to try the Zorn palette for ages! This piece is stunning Jess
It’s such an interesting pallet, it would be interesting to use this pallet but add in the compliments of the yellow and red to mix in those muted colors/chromatic gray but keeping it in the yellow red range.
Yes! Definitely. Thanks!
This painting reminded me of Robin Williams and I got a little verklempt. Great video. Excellent instruction.
That was great. You did well! Thanks for the guidance and for sharing.
It is amazing to me how much green and purple is available without a distinct blue! I’m sure that using a blue-leaning black helps with this as well. A lovely demonstration, thank you. :)
Bravo 👏. Riveting i literally just stood on my bathroom for 11 minutes watching you and I wasn't disappointed.
Thanks Jess for another awesome video! I always learn so much from you!
Thank you!!
There is an artist here in Wichita that looks like that guy. He paints lighthouses. Thank you! This is beautiful! I want to try it!
I learned something new from you Jess again! This painting was very nice!
Looks stunning. Love the brush strokes ❤
Thanks for the demonstration.
i love using only black and white with maybe a red or green highlight.
Wow this looks amazing
Thanks!
