  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Jeremy Frey, a Passamaquody basket-weaver, shares his personal journey through dark times to finding light and hope and the role the Native arts played in his recovery.
Jeremy Frey is a Maine Passamaquoddy basket-weaver. He is descended from a
long line of native weavers and specializes in ash fancy baskets, a traditional form of Wabanaki weaving. His work has been featured in the Changing Hands exhibit at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City. His work is also showcased in the Smithsonian Museum as well as many other prominent museums around the country. Mr. Frey won Best of Show at the Santa Fe Indian Market and at the Heard Indian Market and Fair in 2011. He is only the second
person to win both of these major cultural competitions in the same year and the first basket-weaver to achieve this honor in the Santa Fe Indian Market’s 90+ year history.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
