  • My new boat that I will be collecting after the lockdown is over. It is a Contessa 26! These can be the before photos. It has been sitting for 12 years on a trailer but under all the dirt and mold it seems quite well preserved! Something cool to look forward to after this is all over.....

As a CO26 owner, I can say that these are the sweetest boats to sail. Best of luck! 👍

Good luck in your restoration of this wonderful sailing boat. I subscribe to your channel. I have a Contessa 26 too, and I am in love with it. I am also restoring, but browsing at the same time.

@@navegandolamonthyhuelva7717 You sure your boat is not actually an Invicta 26 designed by E. G. van de Stadt , rather than the Sadler designed Contessa?

It's a Canadian one like mine. I can tell by the longer cockpit than the English built ones.

Yes I think you are right. Hey I notice you use an outboard engine. How do you find it? Mine had an inboard engine that has been removed. I can either find another one and replace it or use an outboard. Which would you recommend?

@@mycrazyboatlife Oh that is a simple question without an easy answer. Here is my opinion (which are like noses, everyone has one): If you know and understand inboards, and can maintain them, and probably most importantly can afford both to buy one and to get it properly installed - then go for the inboard. If you are like me and cannot afford $10K for the engine $5K fior the installation (god knows too those $figures may be light) and have trouble understanding not only the engine itself and how to maintain it, but all the thru-hulls and seacocks and maintenance of those - then a nice new extra long shaft 5-6hp ($2-3K) with a big prop at a low pitch, and a Tenob outboard bracket ($500) has much to recommend. Of course, you could always get a second hand inboard diesel engine, but again, only would recommend that if you can DIY all the maintenance that a second hand engine will probably induce. Welcome to come down to Marina and look at my set up post virus lockdown.

Hi guys! Yes it is a Canadian Contessa for sure. I wonder how she got there? It could be interesting to search her history a bit. Cant wait to see your refiting video Jason that would be an interresting project.

Just watched the other video after you cleaned her up. Man what a difference. Could you put a video of how it is standing up inside. I heard it's about 5'10 ish. The high spot . Congrats on the boat.

Brilliant buy mate, she will clean up great and below she is not bad at all' seen a lot worse. Keep posting videos. I’m in UK and sail a Rival 32 but always love Contessa yachts. The designer a Jeremy Rogers is still building Co32 in Lymington. Do you have mast, boom and any sails? Best of luck. Andy UK

@@mycrazyboatlife Keep this one Jason.. Assuming you don't junk rig her like me, once you have her sailing it will be interesting to see how she sails compared to mine. I'm not into racing but a comparison would be interesting. Whatever I can do to help shout out...I've gained a bit of knowledge of the Contessa over the last four years, and will be redoing the hull / deck joint later this year....assuming no more lock-downs.

Looks to be a Canadian version, would probably be early 1970's.
They had Farymann diesels for the most part which were made up until 2018 or 2019... if you're quick, you may find one that drops right into place. Back then, they were the K34 but later changed names to the 15W which was basically identical. My preference is an inboard diesel, but for simplicity, you can get away with an outboard.
Definitely stop by CO26.com and the Contessa Facebook group. There are lots of active, Canadian Contessa owners that can help you with specifics. I see some non-standard add-ons like the traveler in the cockpit (get rid of that) and the hawse pipe for the anchor rode (keep that).
    Good luck with the rebuild!

p.s. I'm curious to know if there is the manufacturer's plate which should be on the forward side of the transom on the port side. It is caked with 'stuff' so power wash that first. If it's there, it will give you the date of the build.

ill have a look once it is all cleaned up next week and let you know. I think I will use an outboard for a while then see?

@@mycrazyboatlife That sounds like a prudent plan. I'm never a big fan of outboards, but it's difficult to justify the cost of an inboard.
I would make sure to check below the floorboards to see if the fibreglass is bulging at all. The old versions were filled with iron that could rust and expand upon water intrusion. Other areas to check are the wood cross beam under the mast. The hulls were solid fibreglass, so no problems there. But the decks were cored so check for soft spots. It looks like the rails on the bulwarks are raised. I believe there is wood in them, and if the holes were exposed, you may have rot all through the bulwarks... I've never heard of that as a problem, but I've never seen one with all the teak and rails being left off in the state yours is.
Do you have a rudder for the boat? If you need to rebuild one, make sure you add a 3rd pintle/gudgeon like the newer boats, as well as a metal 'foot' below the rudder. These were all later factory improvements for good reason.
