    Going with the Vorpal Swords, and when I read the lore of them I knew I needed to start an army of them as a side project (I'm an ork fan at heart). They and 19 other chapters were found to be found wanting by the judgement of Saint Basillius the Elder. Each chapter volunteered for a penitent crusade into the Eye of Terror for redemption (The Abyssal Crusade). They emerged hundreds of years later, the only chapter to survive or not be corrupted by Chaos, having purged over 400 worlds within the Eye. The "Saint" that had started this all was declared a false idol, and was executed.

    I would say:
    - Flesh Tearers, because of Gabriel Seth,
    - Blood Ravens, because Blood Angels + Raven Guard + Thousand Sons,

    1. black dragons - so much potential for an amazing model and intrigue on its parent chapter
    2. astral claws - have some of the best rules on the table top and became one of the most powerful traitor legions (also was extremely powerful before)
    3. carcharodons - awesome look and cool rituals for battle
    4. minotaurs - nice chapter theories and i like the idea of a greek themed chapter with potentially a custode leading it.

    • @theinsidioushat7543
      @theinsidioushat7543 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jamesashcroft8170 While that is fair, they often perform their actions because they are needed. The High Lords are diffirent then the inquisition, the majority of the actions of the Minotaurs is putting chapters in their place. For instance, they have spared chapters that yielded with no concequences, it is only when they are challenged by wayward chapters that they brutalise them so that no one else will rebel.

    Flesh Tearers - the flawed, badass, and resilient sons of Sanguinius
    Raptors - a professional special operations force when everyone else is screaming with a chainsword
    Blood Ravens - Our favorite mysterious, badass nerds!
    If we want to go a little further:
    Doom Eagles - They may be emo but they are also heroes
    Guardians of the Covenant - mysterious, intriguing, and full of style
    Marines Malevolent - they're dicks and we love them for it

    Number 5 - Minotaurs
    Honestly, the only thing I ever see as a detraction for them, the only issue with the Minotaurs is that they're the lap dogs of the Council of Terra, and even then, they're a damn hard as nails. I personally love the idea that they're chimeric gene-seed of Iron Warriors and World Eaters. Could also be Night Lords, upon some more thought.
    Number 4 - Grey Knights
    Alright, so here is where we argue, because the Grey Knights were not a Legion, and are technically successors to the Knights-Errant. That said, holy crap do they have some awesome characters, with psychic might and some of the coolest looking models in the Space Marine range, sans their rules on the table top, what isn't to love?
    Number 3 - Flesh Tearers
    Honestly, I love that their chapter master told Dante to get bent when he suggested reforming the Blood Angels Legion. Gabriel Seth is such a badass. Making proper use of the Black Rage and Red Thirst, embracing their curse and making it their greatest blessing, that is the kind of story I can get behind.
    Number 2 - Celestial Lions/Emperor's Spears
    I have a tie here, technically a three-way tie, but Number 1 gets that spot since I actually play them on the table top. That said, these boys have some of the coolest lore and work with what might be my favorite chapter of all time. That said...
    Honorable Mentions; Lamenters, Howling Griffons, Storm Wardens, Wolfspear, and Star Phantoms
    Number 1 - Black Templars
    All of their named characters, their aesthetic, their fighting style, the Land Raider Crusader, so many things going for the boys in black, Helbrecht is by and away one of the most badass Chapter Masters, and tactical (it has always been his playbook to drop fire from the skies on the enemy before sending in his Crusader Squads). Grimaldus is by and away the single most badass Chaplain in the entire setting, bar none. Founded by THE Emperor's Champion, Sigismund, and the first to fight against the Black Crusades, and with how Sigismund died telling Abbadon the Despoiler to go choke on his own top-knot. Beautiful.

  • @TheWasteOfTime
    @TheWasteOfTime 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Hahaha, "we all have our favorite gene sire." I mean hands down I've always loved Sanguinius. When I made my custom chapter I styled them after the Blood Angels, but made them Ultramarines successors because I wanted as much of a blank slate as I could get and didn't want to have to deal with the bullshit of the Flaw (plus my fandom of vampires kinda faded out after high school).

    • @madmoody100
      @madmoody100 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Obvious answer for this is Lamenters.

    • @TheWasteOfTime
      @TheWasteOfTime 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@madmoody100 Hahaha, oddly enough I HAD considered something in that vein, but lore wise I wanted to pick something that didn't buck the established trends of a chapter or the canon so I could slide whatever I wanted to do around it. Had I done something like "oh, they're a BA successor but they don't really wrestle with the Flaw, they're murderous assholes because they CHOOSE to be." there could be a whole thing of "so your chapter is what the Blood Angels have been trying to pull off forever and no one's fucking heard of them?"
      So instead I wrote it in that the Chapter was founded by an Ultramarines Assault Captain called Severus Kage (who I admittedly created to just be a Space Marine version of Kratos) who had palled around with a Blood Angels Captain during the Great Crusade, met Sanguinius during the Imperium Secundus shit and when it came time to break the Legions up into Chapters, Guilliman gave him command of one as an excuse to get rid of the unruly elements of his Legion and sent them far, far away. Since his moniker was the Knight of Hell and he was deeply influenced by the Blood Angels, he made his chapter all red and called them the Hells Angels.
      It was a fun exercise to make it so this dude was in the background for a bunch of important shit, but was never involved or important enough to be mentioned.
      I also toyed with a Dark Angels origin for them as well as making them originate from a Loyalist group of World Eaters, but the Ultramarines origin caused the least ripples.

    1# Carchardons Because I love their lore and that they are basically loyalist Night Lords
    2# Blood Ravens DOW games are what got me into the hobby
    3# Flesh Tearers Because Gabriel Seth is a BAMF
    4# Black Dragons a very interesting and unique chapter also their book states that load bearing walls are heresy.
    5# Black Templars Because not putting them on this list is heresy.
    Also when you talked about the tactics of the Silver Templars it kinda put the image in my head of them fighting the Alpha Legion being 40ks version of whacka mole.

    3. Steel Confessors (secret admech made chapter)
    4. Death Watch
    5. Exorcists
    I'm surprised at how almost similar this list was an appreciate you putting your fanboyism aside to highlight others. Outside of the fact you seemingly have a penchant for [GLORIOUS MELEE]ᵀᴹ chapters.
    There's a lot of interesting bits about the Carcharadons (yes, you pronounced it correctly (Car-care-ah-dawn, it's latin it doesn't have to make sense grammatically) and you have summed up what they're famous for, brutal melee and absolutist tactics from the Badab War. "Oh, there's traitors there? Ok, good luck everyone else, we've just set the nuclear power cores of the hive cities to explode." I'm going through Red Tithe and Outer Dark now and its fantastic. Wish Forge World would get off their ass and make some updated models.

    My top 5 successor Chapter are the Following:
    1) Blood Ravens. I like this chapter because me watching the Cutscenes of the Dawn of War 1 game is what got me hooked on Warhammer 40K. This was around 3 years ago and since that first watching of the cutscenes I have fallen deeply in the the Lore! It also did not hurt that I watched the story of Dawn of War 2, and the DLC's Chaos Rising and Retribution and found each appealing. I loved the characterization of them and how they work with each other. The Imperium and its many Adepti are well-known for their desire to keep the truth of the Galaxy from the masses as it helps maintain some control over a species spread out across the Galaxy. This coupled with a directive of preventing learning and betterment of just about every formresults in plenty of arrogance and ignorance. Which made the Blood Ravens stand out as a Chapter that chose to collect knowledge and store to defeat Chaos and the myriad array of foes that beset the Imperium astounding. That they still exist as a chapter raises volumes of why the Imperium even allows this. To say nothing of speculating on who the Blood Raven Gene Sire and Legion was. I finally was able to put together a probable answer two, but that can go later on this comment.
    2) Flesh Tearers. The Imperium and its many Adepti are not known for tolerance in most forms. You do not accept the Emperor of Mankind as a God? Heresy! Kill, torture or mutilate the poor fellow into a slave servitor. Most kinds of mutation, slay on sight! (Psykers capture as they will be turned into astropaths, battle psykers, Inquisitors, or fuel for the Astronomican and Emperor of Mankind who resides on the Golden Throne. Possibly worse than death.) Slay accidentally more than a certain quota of unaugmented humans? Imperial Guard, civilians, Ecclisiarchal cultists, (I have deep grudges against these ones!) and other poor saps that die too often near Military force. Traitors! Eliminate them for slaying Loyal servants of the God Emperor!
    So a chapter that has to deal with Sanguinius' twin curses of the Red Thirst and Black Rage that lead to an unending thirst for blood, and tormented by seeing your Primarch die in the most cruel and terrible way possible, to still be Loyal to the Imperium? You bet your bolter I would like this Chapter! It also does not hurt their likability that in dealings with the Inquistion they come out alive! Their Chapter Master Gabriel Seth sold me even more on what an incredible chapter it is! They are almost universally hated and feared by the Imperium entire for causing numerous casualties to their own allies if their blood lust is not satiated by the foe, as they have turned on those that they fought alongside. See account of Honour's End and the Flesh Tearers role in the 3rd War for Armageddon. They are not the smartest, fastest, or psyhically powerful Space Marines you will read about, but they will be blunt, honest, and determined to bring about the Foes of Mankind to extinction.
    The book you are referring to is called "Trial by Blood" by Andy Smillie and this pretty much sells the point of why you should respect this chapter of Space Marines. Read Devastation of Baal for even more Flesh Tearer juicy bits. In the latter you will find my 6th favorite successor Chapter, the Knights of Blood!
    3) Crimson Fists. They are loyal to the Imperium and have proved their loyalty 3 times over in hunting down Adeptus Astartes Chapters. Something that many other chapters dislike them for. I read the novel "Rynn's World" by Steve Parker and absolutely fell in love with them! The steely will that is characteristic of the scions of Rogal Dorn, Hatred for the Ork race, and their notions about honor and duty to the Imperium is brilliantly seasoned with care for those they are charged with protecting.
    4) Lamenters. Another chapter that has lineage from Sanguinius and his Legion it suffers the least from the Red Thirst and the Black Rage, but suffers terrible luck in battles. This chapter is unique as it is one of the few surviving Loyal chapters created during the 21st Founding. Better known as the "Cursed Founding" as Adpetus Mechanicus Adeptus sought to improve upon existing gene seed samples to create better Astartes that did not exhibit the flaws of the original geneseed. Majority of chapter founded were either eliminated by the Inquistion for Numerous mutations or converted to Chaos to avoid annihilation. This chapter endures about as much suffering as your average Imperial Guardsmen regiment, which is to say they suffer staggering losses that would have broken many other chapters. They genuinely feel sorrow for failing to save normal non-augmented humans, something that is quite rare in Space Marine Chapters. "For those we cherish we die in Glory!" See the sites I posted to convince you of why they are so special
    warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/Lamenters
    www.fanfiction.net/s/12862798/1/Lamenters-and-Redeemers
    5) Emperor's Scythes. Garrisoned on the World of Sotha from the Horus Heresy, They later became the chapter known as they are today. They guarded the world that acted which had xenos technology that acted as a teleporter, conduit for emotion, and as we now know was the beacon that shifted the Tyrannids attention to the Milky Way Galaxy. This chapter along with the Lamenters took the worst lossed suffered by the Adeptus Astartes during the 2nd Tyrannic War. After losing over half of their chapter, along with their chapter homeworld of Sotha to the Tyrannids and nearly their 2nd homeworld shows me that their is hope for the Imperium with Chapters like the Emperor's Scythes that can survive and adapt.
    Yawn will post later need sleep.

  • @herkamer6390
    @herkamer6390 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your list is a little closer to mine, but mine have some Dorn Chapters:
    5. Blood Ravens - I'll probably catch some flak for this, but these guys are pretty cool. Not knowing who their primarch is (nor which Chapter they derived from), having some heretical relics, and one of their Chapter Masters was a psyker, this Chapter has an odd build, but that's the charm. The fact they have a few more psykers than the normal Chapters out there makes it even better. Plus their Chapter went through those hard times play out in the Dawn Of War series and having one of the coolest Chapter Masters, Gabriel Angelos, there's so much that you can't help but love.
    4. Black Templars - I love the knightly feel of these guys. Kind of disappointed GW retconed the size of the Chapter, but it's kind of minor. Anyway, their origin story was very interesting. First Chapter Master was actually the first Emperor's Champion, how they decided to not follow the Codex Astartes, and the way the whole Chapter is structured. It would be interesting to see how a Primaris Crusader Squad is formed.
    3. Relictors - Now this is a peculiar bunch, and one that, I think, deserves it's own rules. The fact that these guys are seen as heretical because of their collection of Chaos artifacts, not fighting alongside the Imperium's forces, almost being wiped out by the Grey Knights, and all the while having good intentions on fighting against Chaos and protecting the Imperium (and changing their name from the Fire Claws to the Relictors), I don't know why these guys aren't their own codex. GW needs to revisit these guys with serious consideration of making them an army.
    2. Flesh Tearers - One name, Gabriel Seth. Okay that's not all to this army, but Seth does represent who they are to their fullest. The fact that these guys have a BIG force of marines in their Death Company says it all, and Seth is trying to save the Chapter while remaining as true sons of Sanguinius. They're even going as far as pushing back a little on Guilliman that they're that devoted to THEIR Primarch and HIS legacy. That's how dedicated these guys are.
    1. Crimson Fists - The current marine army I play and one of the most intriguing of ALL the marine successor Chapters, IMO. The Chapter being crippled in one blow, fighting off hordes of Orks, struggling to rebuild their Chapter (unlike the Black Templars where recruiting is not as big of an issue), their veterans playing a bigger role in their survival as an army, and still answering the call whenever the Imperium needed help. Pedro Kantor has led his army well. Most other Chapters in this situation would have been wiped out, but these guys toughed it out. Fighting against what would seemingly be impossible odds, but coming out on top in the end. That is what makes this Chapter awesome and why, I think, they are the best successor Chapter in 40k. FOR DORN!

    The Silver Templars have understood the most basic way to deal with orks that the imperium failed to understand for thousends of years: kill the warboss! In fact i seriously belive theyr tactics should be in the codex astartes under "how to deal with ork waaagh".
