My sister and I got denied a dental cleaning because we had lice. We were 6 and 7. My mom told the hygienist that she was going to wash our hair with gasoline and if it didn't work that she would have our father shave our heads. They wouldn't let her leave until she was properly educated on how to handle head lice. I'm so grateful that someone at the dental wrote all of this down for me to find 20 years later instead of brushing it off as a strange interaction.

This story reminds me of a girl who was in my year in secondary school. Her lice were so bad you’d see them crawling on her face. The school never helped her and she was only at my school for a year before leaving but I always felt so sorry for her. No one would be friends with her because you’d literally see lice mating on her head they we’re so bad. . Schools are just as responsible as parents in these cases.

Wow, growing up we always had “head checks” at school every month regardless if anyone was known to have it or not. I always thought it was common everywhere, because even now my son’s school does it. Kids are called out one by one (usually before recess or lunch), that way if one did have lice, it wouldn’t be known because no one came back to class. Several staff members would take the kids into the teacher’s lounge and check them in the restroom there. Once the check was done, they’d send them on to lunch or recess, and if they had it, they would make an excuse for them so other kids wouldn’t start rumors and then call their parents. They’d have a couple days off from school if they had it to get rid of them, and often the school would give them a small kit.
I wonder if it was more common due to population. I’ve always lived in rural areas where the schools have no more than 300-400 kids for elementary and middle schools, high schools maybe 400. Makes it easier to check everyone, I suppose, compared to a school pushing a thousand.
Honestly really saddens me that a child sat in class with lice and everyone knew, enough to never say or do anything helpful. How humiliating for that kid because you know how cruel other children can be.

My first child death in the hospital, was a little girl who had worms so bad that she was in complete failure. When we looked at her records, she had been diagnosed three years prior. They let a perfectly healthy child deteriorate to death over a 14 day prescription (which was free), and no follow-up appointment. They obviously knew she had them, as she was incontinent and her stool was full of worms. I have never wanted to harm anyone, but those two... thinking of how miserable the child must have been all that time... I am not sure I wouldn't kick them off a rocky cliff. I was locked in the room and got head lice and body bugs. My head was so engrossed with bugs that you could see them crawling . I got bullied from teachers and my peers. I would scratch holes into my scalp that got infected. It took 5 years for my scalp to naturally heal after the lice were finally removed. I NEVER got lice during my school years. I am 34 years old now. My daughter got lice while in 2nd grade and before I knew she had it, she gave it to me and I had hair ALLLLLLL the way to my butt. It was one of the worst thing I have ever came across. Thankfully I caught it super super early but I legit put on like 3-4 lice treatments in a week (I was stupid to do that much in such a short time) but it worked. Took me HOURS to comb my long ass hair through that little ass comb. Ugh. My heart goes out to anybody who gets lice without getting treatment. I could NOT imagine the feeling of bugs crawling on my head and just accepting it because nobody would help me get rid of them. That poor baby. 💔💔💔

When my oldest daughter was 8yr old, she got lice from a outbreak at her elementary school. She had waist length hair that was tight natural curls. We did the lice stuff from the pharmacy. Did not work. Dr suggested we use mayo (lots and put up in a cap for a few hours or about the length of a Disney movie) and not only did it work, the oils made is so much easier to comb through it. Thank goodness that was the only time we ever had lice and I never had it as a child so it was gross and stressful for both of us. These poor kids. ❤

My daughter got them when with her dad over the summer when she was 3. He supposedly treated her, but when she got home she had thousands of bugs. After treating her twice and combing through her hair for hours, she still had them. After speaking to my pediatrician's nurse, I followed her instructions, using an oil and vinegar method. After doing this twice, they were gone. Here's what I did:
Rinse hair with vinegar. Vinegar dissolves the nits (eggs).
After rinsing the vinegar out, coat the hair with a thick layer of any kind of oil, like vegetable oil.
Leaving the oil in, pin hair up and cover it with a shower cap and leave it in place overnight. *Make sure the cap isn't too tight, but you want it fitted to your child's head without any gaps. Oil suffocates lice. But they will try to run if they can. (The first morning after I did this, there was a large one that had made it down to her eyebrow. It was so gross! Lol).
After washing their hair, rinse with vinegar again and let it sit for 20 or 30 min before you rinse it out. Then dry their hair on a high heat setting (this can also help kill nits).
After all of this, Use a bamboo comb to comb out the now dead bugs and nits. Be thorough.
You're also going to want to change their sheets daily for awhile and also vacuum around their bed daily.
Bag up all stuffed animals and leave them for several weeks.
Disinfect brushes and anything else they use in their hair. Or just throw them out.
Pillows can go in the dryer with heat, look up the heat setting and for how long.
Like I said, I did this two nights in a row. Don't know if the second one was needed, but I was paranoid at this point and determined to rid her and our house of them for good. I even cut her long hair to shoulder length.
The chemical OTC and Rx treatments can't be used too many times in a row, as they can be harmful. This method has no chemicals, so you can do it as often as you need to. And I'm telling you, it worked better than any of the chemical treatments we tried.
**They actually prefer clean hair. So for girls, whenever you get a note that they've gotten into her class at school, put her hair in a tight ponytail, give it a good spray down with hairspray, and don't wash it during the week. I learned this from my sister who had 3 girls close in age, and my daughter never got them again.
Edit: thanks for all of the positive comments, and to those of you who jumped in and gave some excellent advice! Moms need all the info they can get. And, for whatever reason, most don't seem to be aware it can be treated without chemicals. Doctors should be suggesting this method before chemicals.

When going through it with my school age kids, I did much of what you did. I changed full sheets daily, but also put the comforter and blanket in the dryer for appropriate amount of time on high heat and used tshirts on pillows in the living room and when they got up to move, I’d grab the pillow and take it to the washer and take the shirt off right into the wash tub. I also got a large glass vase at a goodwill and filled it with rubbing alcohol. We would use combs and picks during the ‘Battle of the Bugs’ and between uses, they and hair ties stayed in the alcohol. It’s very effective…I saw many of the little buggers floating! Also, I’d add to not forget your vehicle, it needs treated too. We had them keep coming back after hours and hours upon hours of cleaning and washing, until it dawned on me that we were still getting into the same truck to go to school and get home every day. 🤷‍♀️ugh, lice, bed bugs and fleas…honestly, I’d rather have C0v!d for the 4th time!!

I couldn’t understand why she would neglect them, she would just say that we were crazy and deny they had lice. I felt terrible for those kids. This breaks my heart 💔 I remember being a kiddo and having my hair checked for lice at school. I never had lice and actually found the combing so relaxing. When there was a lice case found at my school, my mom would gently brush our hair, checking for any signs of lice. She'd help us wash our hair with tea tree oil drops. Looking back, I feel so appreciative of my mom and community. This poor baby deserved to be taken care of, deserved to be pampered!!!

Growing up in poverty for me lice was rampant. So many people had these insane infestations, could see them crawling on their heads in class. I’ve had it more times than I can count. We used lice treatments but I knew some families would just cut all their hair off. The school never did anything because it was just “normal” there. This kid was severely neglected, not fed or taken care of. You’ll be fine with bad lice as long as you’re eating properly… clearly she was not… at all

How long ago was this? I grew up in a neighborhood then rife with crime, poverty, drugs, etc. I've never seen anything remotely like that. If anything, I got lice at the age of 10 through a neighbor's kid, who's mother just put a wool hat on his head. And this was a more or less middle class neighborhood with nice homes and a few scatterings of apartment buildings. Because this mother didn't want to promptly treat her son, many kids on the block at the time got them.

You get the same fatty liver (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) from poor diets high in sugars, starch and, especially, fructose, which the liver has problems metabolising in great quantities. The incidence of fatty liver is actually rising rapidly in the US and Australia, at younger and younger ages, probably due to routine consumption of processed foods. It can eventually develop into cancer and it can end in dementia. It frequently is accompanied by Vitamin B deficiencies. It is now increasingly recognised as a precursor to diabetes.

Back in the early 90's when I was in elementary school there was girl in my class who was sent home so much for head lice that it eventually got to a point where they would make her go directly to the nurse every day immediately after stepping off the bus so they could check her before she was allowed to go to class.
It was clear something was really wrong in her home life. She was always dirty. She smelled generally bad all the time. She wore hand me downs from her older brothers, including worn and torn shoes that were like clown shoes on her they were so oversized for her 9 year old feet.
She was so regularly infested with head lice that we rarely saw her in class because she rarely made it past the nurse check in towards the end.
Eventually she just stopped showing up entirely and never was seen in school again.

I've never heard of head lice actually killing anyone before this. When I had them briefly in high school everything I read about them basically said they were more annoying than anything and didn't spread known diseases like the other kind of lice. It's hard for me to even conceptualize the AMOUNT of lice that had to be on her head for them to feed off enough of her blood to make her anemic. And she had fatty liver and liver failure, at 9 YEARS OLD. How does that even happen? This is insane. I hope her surviving siblings end up well taken care of and the mother and grandmother are held responsible to the greatest extent of the law, because they had plenty of time to save the little girl and chose to do NOTHING.
And poverty isn't a good enough excuse for not treating the infestation... Over the counter lice treatments don't always work (even IF you can afford them). What I had to do in high school (because over the counter treatments weren't working) was take a nit comb and slowly and methodically go through my LONG hair, clean off/crush any lice and eggs that were on the comb, rinse the comb and continue the process. (I got them from headphones for online classes at school, no i did not have a choice. I ended up convincing my dad I needed some cheap ones for school so I'd stop getting lice.) The difference is a high schooler can do this with their own hair themself, a parent should do so for a 9 year old. There was so much that COULD have been done to prevent this child's death and its incredibly disappointing that nothing was done in time. Again, I really hope the other children in the house are alright and being taken care of.

When my daughter was in elementary school she came home 3 times with head lice. I remember my neighbors who kids went to school with me and they picked mine up after school was told their kids didn't have lice. I said impossible and checked the kids and they both had it and the school nurse didn't see it. I found the way as a single mom no child support to treat her and the house. You have to care for your child to take care of them and as we know not everyone should be a mom.

My mom is a single mother with 3 girls and she was able to take at least one day off and use her valuable vacation time that takes months to build up in order to do treatment. This mother has no excuse. It’s all about what kind of parent you are.

The best thing for lice I’ve found is actually mayonnaise and vinegar. You smother them with the mayo and plastic. Leave it on for a really long time like longer than you want. Hours. Comb it. Wash it out with the vinegar and comb it until they’re gone.

We did that too and it worked really well. Then we went over our hair with a hair straightening iron and did it every week or so until we were sure. I wouldnt really want to put mayo and stuff like that on an infected scalp though. Maybe antibiotic ointment? Ours never got that out of hand though.

These stories are getting worse by the day.
These children, babies, venerable adults dying at the hands of lazy caregivers, parents, & relatives.
This keeps going on... Not only will more death occur, but they're going to bring back diseases that we've eliminated. All over boyfriends', girlfriends, drugs, alcohol, jealousy, it's disgusting.
Child services needs to get it together.
If I need a license to drive a car, go fishing, drive a boat, fly a plane.....then start making people go through some sort of testing for having children.
Just because you have the parts, & can.. Doesn't me you're a good candidate.
Forgive me..... But when I saw the grandmothers' mugshot....I thought of a Maine Fisherman in a yellow raincoat...I'm going to Hell.

The US has such a stigma against headlice, but sometimes it happens. In the UK where I lived as a child I got lice once or twice in about 5 years as well as my younger brother, but my mom took care of it in only a few days

I'm American and went to school in NY and the girl I sat next to in 5th grade got lice. I wasn't sure it was lice because the bugs were so large. I didn't say anything because how could no one else not notice? Especially her parents. I wasn't friends with her so I didn't know her situation. But the next day a bug fell onto her paper and she squished it. So in my young mind I took that to mean, she knew they were there and didn't care. As an adult, idk how true that assumption was. I told my teacher discretely and he sent her to the nurse's office. The next day we all had to go and get checked for lice. The girl seemed ok afterwards too, she never had issues making friends (that I knew of)

In the U.S, at least here in WV, we have health checks every 6 weeks for the student. We did it when I was in school, after becoming a nurse my first job was working for the BOE and we performed lice checks then and as of last year they were still doing them. The health check consist of a basic eye/sight, ear/hearing, teeth/throat, lice check, as well as give the kids cards where they can ask us any personal questions. I didn't realize it until I became a nurse but the personal question card has actually helped get kids out of abusive home lives.
If a child does have lice we keep it 100% confidential. We make a note of the student, an assistant contacts a parent to come pick the child up and is given RID (lice treatment) & 3 cans of RID spray. If the parent needs help we can offer a dry cleaning service and a one time cleaning service that will do a 3 day deep clean. It's actually a pretty awesome system.

What a horrible, but heart wrenching sad story. :( However, when my daughter was 11, she got lice. Not only are the products you get from the store toxic, they're expensive. I fought it for a long time, and nothing worked. After spending 100s of dollars, I confided in a close friend of mine living in Italy, her husband was stationed there. She told what the Italians do. She said buy some olive oil (not veg oil), drench my daughter's hair in it. I had a special type comb, not the type you get with the store bought products that tear the hair out. She said comb the hair removing as many lice as you possibly can, all that you find. Add more oil, then braid my daughter's hair. Put a plastic cap over the hair, mainly to stop the oil from dripping out and all over the place. Let them sleep over night with the oil and cap on. The next day, apply the oil again, and comb out as much as you can fine. Usually, by then any eggs on the hair has hatched, thus killing the rest of the lice. I was amazed and relieved that it truly worked. And it worked fast, with no toxins. Lice can't survive in the oil. :)

Life provides enough hardships and pitfalls for kids without the people who are supposed to care/teach/love/protect them choosing to instead neglect/abuse/murder them. This is beyond heartbreaking. RIP to that sweet precious little girl💖💖
