They got their name "The Righteous Brothers" from black Marines from the El Toro Marine base who used to visit the local Los Angeles night clubs. When they saw the RB perform, they loved their sound so much they started calling them righteous brothers. At the end of one performance a black Marine stood up and shouted, "that was righteous, brothers". And the name stuck.
Actually, the club and the base were in Orange county, not Los Angeles. Calling them righteous brothers wasn't a one-time event; it was an ongoing thing. The played at that club for several months. They needed a name when recording "Little Latin Lupe Lu" as a duo (without the rest of the of The Paramours). They had to put a name on the record so Bobby suggested they use the name the marines were calling them. Edited to add the name of the club. It was John's Black Derby in Santa Ana.

God, yes! We certainly loved the Motown sound, and before that there were the likes of the Platters, etc... all great Black musicians! Our music IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST, no matter who was playing it or what color they were! :)

YES. We cut our teeth on Motown.. and we loved Blue Eyed Soul. I am so happy to see these young people love what we loved so much.
The Righteous Brothers appealed to YOUNG people when they performed. The reason we OLD people love them so much is because we fell in love with them when we were young.
I was born in the 80s and I love this music. I love all soul and Motown. I'm English btw. I used to listen to club, house music when I was young in the 2000s but I think when I got to about 28 I started listening to Queen, soul, every genre basically. I love a lot of early 80s and 70s stuff that I totally missed out on and I've decided music on the whole is no where near as good as back in the day. My mother was born in 1954 she’s 71 today and I’m 33. I grew up with all of this. The greatest memories when she’d blast these oldies. Gives me chills watching others hear this for the first time.

@@willzimjohn In an interview, they said something like Spector was wearing them out, but they didn't mind because they could see each time it was getting better. When Spector had a concept in his head, he wouldn't quit until the singers got it. Too bad they couldn't get inside his head to understand what he wanted in the beginning of the sessions. The wild high "please" near the end was a Bobby ad lib as was the ending of Ebb Tide. Spector was always waving guns around. Don't recall which recording session it was but Darlene Love just refused to sing until the guns disappeared.
No autotune, indeed, but a very special, new kind of recording stuff for that time! It's called "wall of sound". You might wanna check this stuff on wikipedia.

Fun fact: the producer for this song was Phil Spector, famous for his "wall of sound". His assistant was "Sonny" Bono who included his girlfriend at the time in the backing choir. Her name, Cherilyn Sarcassian, later known only as Cher
Exactly. This all happened before Phil went down the tubes into crazy land. Remember too this was shot from one camera and no changes made once it was filmed. One straight shot and take with natural voices of all the background singers as well as the brothers. Also the guy with who starts the song was the same singer that was in the lead song in Dirty Dancing with his daughter. There was so much great music that you guys missed so keep looking.

Hearing Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield for the first time is like seeing the ocean in person for the first time. Nothing will ever replace it. Great reaction fellas. I saw it moving through you.
They were known as "blue eyes soul". Bill and Bobby blended so well together, Bill is a baritone; Bobby was a counter tenor. Bobby did solos, unchained melody, ebb tide, summertime and other songs as well. No autotune, just pure talent. Bill is still with us, sadly Bobby passed in 2003. He is dearly missed, but we still have his 🎶.
Check out his version of the classic Ella Fitzgerald "summertime", you will be pleasantly surprised. He puts his own spin on this classic, it definitely shows his octave range. Also take a look see at "ebb tide" very well done, only the way bobby sang a song whatever genre of 🎶 it may be. Can you imagine time goes by quickly, he has be gone 20 years, dearly missed. What a blessed individual with such a "gifted" voice.

I'm 72 grew up in the 60's to this music and still love it above all else. Check out Otis Redding's "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" if you haven't heard it.

They were both in their early 20s in this video. Bill Medley was 23 and still kicking today at 81 years old. Unfortunately we lost Bobby Hatfield years ago!

The Righteous Brothers are my favorite group to watch people react too, for obvious reasons! They called them the Blue Eyed Soul because for some skinny white dudes, they could *SING*. Growing up in Metro Detroit I was raised on a steady stream of Motown and oldies. I remember the first time hearing this song as a little girl and getting goosebumps. I get them every time I listen to this song.
It was a black DJ in Philly, Georgie Woods, who coined the term blue-eyed soul just for them. (They both have blue eyes.) He would call them "his blue-eyed soul brothers" when introducing one of their songs.
Am in the process of moving back to Metro Detroit after 47 years in NYC. We grew up on the same stuff (which included CKLW, WKNR, and WXYZ).

Righteous Brothers, Chubby Checkers, Aretha Franklin, Aerosmith, Journey, Pink Floyd, just to name a few. You guy's seem to like music and I feel bad that you actually missed those years!!! In 1965 my high school sweetheart & love of my life, Sharon, and I, saw them at the Community Concourse in San Diego. The place was packed. Black & White folks were there. They came out in tuxedos & had an orchestra. WOW. After the first song the whole crowd was looking at each other like they couldn't believe just how good they sounded. When they sang Little Latin Lupe Lou, people were standing and dancing in place. Everyone was smiling & singing along. It was a night i will NEVER FORGET. After the concert Sharon and I went to our favorite parking spot. Back then everyone had a favorite place to oo and. hmmmm. .MAKE OUT.😁 That was the icing on the cake. I went into the USAF. & off to Vietnam. She got married & I got married but we ALWAYS kept in touch..We had that special FIRST LOVE you never forget. Her husband recently died & I am divorced. We are in different states but when talking on the phone, it's still there. God maybe has a plan for us to be together after all these years. She still is so beautiful to me. I am still in great shape after being an athlete & gym rat my entire life...& don't need viagra either. Our plans aren't always God's plans. Aee shall see soon when we meet face to face again. I was 13 when this hit the radio airwaves in ‘64. The Righteous Brothers were HUGE!…and we absolutely screamed when their 45 played at the sock-hops. They were most definitely swoon worthy.

I'm an 80 y/o white male. I grew up in Anaheim, California. Hatfield attended Anaheim High School, where he was student body president. My sister-in-law and brother were fellow students of Hatfield. They say he was smart, friendly and popular. He was also a little clowish and prone to breaking into song, high-pitched, loud and not always at appropriate times. When the Righteous Brothers duo came to be and started showing up on the charts in the early/mid 60's, I had all the pre-sets on my little 6 transistor radio set to the 4 AM radio stations most likely to play the Brother's current hits. These guys were the only white artists I liked at the time. No 'Rock Around The Clock' for me. At age 10 (yeah, really) I became and still are, an incurable black 'R and B' fan. When Medley formed his new duo, after Bobby's passing I tried to like them, but.... However, when Chris Stapleton hit the music scene, he and the Righteous Brothers, along with many black R and B artists and traditional black regae dominated my Spotify faves. Blue-eyed soul works for me. Thank the heavens for modern electronic technology that allows us to enjoy all the fantastict music regardless of which side of the dirt the artist is on.

Hey Guys! you mention the Ruffins, I knew Jimmy and David Ruffin. I have met and jammed with Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield. I was born and raised in Detroit. I was always a really good drummer and percussionist. I have jammed and worked with hall of famers. The Righteous Bros have that MOTOWN sound for sure. I was born in 1950 guys. I feel 30 in my mind but somebody went and put mirrors in my house so I scare myself back to reality. We listened to AM Radio, no calculators, no color television, no internet. We played music and were awesome musicians honing our craft. I had a '63 split window corvette, a good job, and owned 2 homes by the time I was 28. $$ went farther.
There are thousands of great musicians you never heard of that are 10x better than most today. No auto tunes, no lighting or special effects to be proud of BUT WE had great fun. Riding bikes in our pre teen years, no gangs or fear of violence. I saved my money from working at the corner store. This was before the fast food craze. You could send your kid to the store with a couple dollars and not worry about them. It was simpler, sweeter, and a more wonderful time that I wish we could get back in the USA today and for our children.
