Can you believe this song is over 55 years old? I love the effect it had on you. As a group, you're young, vivacious, and full of energy, yet the song brought out the stillness in you all. Music is a universal language and it's incredible to see this song still effects people, young people in the same way it did over half of a century ago. Bravo, boys.
As a 60 year old woman I too am very impressed with their patience.. kudos to you all. So much beauty in life and music is dismissed and overlooked because of the need for instant gratification. Some things are worth waiting for. 🙏
This was my Dad’s favorite song. We lost him in August. Really made me smile (through some tears) to see you guys discover it too. Keep listening with open hearts on your journey through music.
This song was released when my mother was in junior high school. As a kid, she told me how beautiful she thought it was. I am now 45 yrs old. This song is ageless and timeless. Here we are enjoying it in 2023. My mother is now almost 70. Art never gets old. ❤
Based on when you posted, if your mother was a junior in high school (11th grade), when this song was released in1967, your mother is going to be 74 this year (2024). If, as you stated, she's almost 70, she was in elementary school when this song was released. This song came out 57 years ago as a junior she would have been 17 years old, which means she will be 74 years old this year (2024).
I'm proud of you young men for opening your minds, hearts & appreciation for ALL genre's of music...Your reaction to this song melted my heart... Thank you & God Bless....
Thank you Gary Brooker and Keith Reid for writing a simply unique piece of music. This song could be played in 100 years and it will still be timeless and totally loved and appreciated. It was released in May 1967 and within 3 weeks was number 1 and stayed there for 6 weeks. RIP Gary Brooker, you've left this world and yet your magical voice will live on forever.
Growing up with music such as this was magical. It heartens me to see younger generations listening and being as affected by the amazing sounds we listened to. I'm 73 now, and I still rock on and rock hard
I personally think this is his best rendition of the song. He not only still had his voice then, but it had a character in it that a younger voice doesn't. Rip, Gary Brooker.
I am 71 years old. I remember when Procol Harum released this song in 1967 on the Procol Harum album! It was one, and will always be, one of my favorite songs of all time. Gary Brooker had so much soul. God Rest His Soul! RIP Gary!
Thank you, gentlemen for letting the song play most of the way before commenting! That decision let the song's power come through. Gary Brooker's voice had a twinge of Ray Charles voice. Lots of heartfelt soul! I agree with you that this entire piece would make a great homage to a Guardian of the Galaxy scene.
I remember when this came out in 1967. It was awesome combining it with Johann Sebastian Bach's "Sleepers, Wake!" and "Air on the G String." No boys not that knda g-string, giggle! They later did this stunning version at Ledreborg Castle in Denmark. They are an English rock band and this live performance continues to stun audiences to this day. So soothing and harmonious but Gary Brooker's vocals which are even better than in the original are simply beyond measure. Unfortueatly he passed in February of '22. Bring it back boys...bring it all back. I love you guys loving this. Show's you know good music when you hear it. Keep on keepin' on boys!
I was born in 1953 this is the music we grew up to. Timeless songs great memories. So great to see your reaction and appreciation. The lead singer is Gary Brooker and sad to say he passed away in February 2022. One of my all time favourite songs. Love from Canada. And your all so gorgeous you must be beating the girls off with a stick lol
This song reaches down inside and takes hold of our souls. That's where I feel it, every time I hear it. I'm a 50 year old man and to this day I get tears in my eyes hearing this. Thanks Cartiers. Fantastic choice.
This song reminds me of being in my dad's S10, in the fields, checking fence lines and feeding cows. It's his music. And it was ours. We didn't know any different. My dad is 71, and I know that some day, his music will make me cry. I just want more time before that happens.
Bravo. You guys get it. Imagine for a moment all the classics you study now with historical perspective being released practically every day on the radio. We were so blessed to have this music firsthand. I am so happy when I see young people like you totally into our old classic rock. Your reactions now were our reactions then.
I remember when this song was released, there was nothing else like it, I was totally blown away! But so much of the music back then was like this in that respect. Everything was brand new, and it was ours. Our parents, for the most part, couldn't comprehend it. It was also the beginning of FM stereo radio, and portable tape players, car stereos...., in many ways it was a brand new world. Bye the way, Percy Sledge sang When a Man Loves a Woman, I loved that song the minute I heard it.
I was born in '68. My folks listened to all kinds of music. Thankfully, that left an impact on me ,my brother, and my sister. After seventy years, this tune still raises the hackles on my neck. The music and lyrics still capture new followers after all these years. Something mystical!
You can truly understand that when you have an orchestra back you up this is it! His voice is excellent for having sung this 50 years ago! I see the intensity of your reaction to this song! Love you guys!
Keith is a good friend of a dear friend of mine and he retired after writing this song, he made so much money from it. He literally didn’t have to work again. Amazing song.
I'm a 75 yr old woman and have always loved this song. (Production) it mays me cry every single time I hear it. Love you guys, and I am so happy that you liked it.
This is quite literally a classic. Gary Brooker said of his composition in his interview with Uncut magazine: "If you trace the chordal element, it does a bar or two of Bach's 'Air on a G String' before it veers off. That spark was all it took. I wasn't consciously combining rock with classical, it's just that Bach's music was in me".
I’m almost 64 from Pennsylvania and I LOVE that you are listening to the great music I grew up on!!! Keep on going through these years, so so much great music!!! Rock is here forever!❤️. I loved your reactions!!
Dear Cartier Family, That was an emotional reaction from all of you listening to this beautiful and almost haunting song. I don't know your individual names, but one of you (in the back row and left side) looked as if he was wiping tears away. Understandable, this performance by Gary Brooker was epic - and unexpectedly I had a few tears. Anyway, also check out the original video with the entire Procol Harum group performing. Unfortunately Gary Brooker passed away February of 2022. As others have mentioned Conquistador is another hit from Procol Harum you should check out.
Dear Carter family , Loved your appreciation of Gary a superb vocalist ,( when a man loves a woman) is by Percy Sledge a brother to you all , you should do a reaction to it . From Ireland .
I was fourteeen when, in summer 1967, this song reached no.1 in the UK charts and stayed at the top four six weeks. It also reached no.5 in the US Billboard Charts. A half-century later, Gary Brooker's voice could still melt butter - and hearts. Glad that you like it guys! In the sixties, this is one of very few songs that outsold many Beatles' hits.
We skipped the light fandango Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor I was feeling kinda seasick The crowd called out for more The room was humming harder As the ceiling flew away When we called out for another drink The waiter brought a tray And so it was that later As the miller told his tale That her face, at first just ghostly Turned a whiter shade of pale She said "there is no reason" And the truth is plain to see But I wandered through my playing cards Would not let her be One of sixteen vestal virgins Who were leaving for the coast And although my eyes were open They might have just as well've been closed And so it was that later As the miller told his tale That her face, at first just ghostly Turned a whiter shade of pale And so it was that later

This is such a beautiful performance - by an incredible artist. You guys would also LOVE You're The Voice by John Farnham. His live concert performance with the Melborne Symphany Orchestra.

Another comparable song to this would be The live orchestral version of Nights In White Satin by The Moody Blues.pretty spectacular performance done before two of the longtime members passed away.

Glad to see these youngsters today still touched by this song.. Timeless and forever beautiful.
If you can still sing a song like this so perfectly 50 years after you released it, you are a special person and this was a special concert.
I agree; he's amazing. Rest in Paradise, Mr. Brooker.
Amen!!
Awesome song 💞👍
His vocals are out of this world to sound so pristine and full!
Can't remember which, but vocal chords either tighten or slacken with age, which makes Gary's performance all the more impressive
This was my Dad’s favorite song. We lost him in August. Really made me smile (through some tears) to see you guys discover it too. Keep listening with open hearts on your journey through music.
So sorry for your loss.
my deepest sympathies on your loss.

We skipped the light fandango
Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
The crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
The waiter brought a tray
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale
She said "there is no reason"
And the truth is plain to see
But I wandered through my playing cards
Would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open
They might have just as well've been closed
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale
And so it was that later

He sounds as good in 2006 as he did in 1968. They were a rock band Procol Harum, I was 18 when I first heard this song in 1968.
Another comparable song to this would be The live orchestral version of Nights In White Satin by The Moody Blues.pretty spectacular performance done before two of the longtime members passed away.
One of my all time favorite songs! Here's the list and the lyrics:

Lyrics
We skipped the light fandango
Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
The crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
The waiter brought a tray
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale
She said "there is no reason"
And the truth is plain to see
But I wandered through my playing cards
Would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open
They might have just as well've been closed
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale
And so it was that later

A wonderful rendition of this song. Its funny how most of the musicians weren't even born when this song came out. Great music knows no age.
