You guys wanna learn some interesting facts about Larry? He was the founding member of the 50/40/90 club. That means he shot over 50% from the field, over 40% from 3 point land, and 90% from the free throw line. Neither Lebron, nor Jordan ever accomplished this. Bird did this 2 times. He also won 3 straight MVP's (the 3rd player after Wilt Chamberlain & Bill Russel to ever do it)), 2 finals MVP's and 12 all-star appearances in 13 seasons. The 1 time he missed the all-star game was when he only played 6 games before getting a season-ending surgery on both feet. He was a 10-time all-NBA team, (9 time all-NBA 1st team and 1 all-NBA 2nd team). HIs 3 championships come with perhaps the highest degree of difficulty. His Celtics Swept Jordan's Bulls twice. Jordan never beat Bird in the playoffs. Bird also had to contend with the Bad boy Pistons with Isaiah, Rodman, and Laimbeer, the Sixers with Dr. J, Moses Malone, Charles Barkley, and Mo Cheeks . The Lakers only competition in the west was The Houston Rockets who had Hakeem Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson, the twin towers. Boston had to navigate a minefield of good teams. Oh, and you might be interested to know that Michael Jordan, Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, and Magic Johnson ALL have Larry Bird in their top 3 players of all-time.
But I think it was Lakers coach Pat Riley who said it best. "If I could have any player to shoot for me if the game was on the line, I would take Michael Jordan. But if my life was on the line, I choose Larry Bird."

Bird is the GOAT. The man was on another level, and he was untouchable. He came back out, played, and won all with a, literal, broken face. He played hurt, he was tough as nails, and the man had grit to spare. Today’s players would not be able to touch him. He accomplished more in his short career than any of the players today would ever be able to do. Even Jordan couldn’t touch him. Larry Legend lived up to his name. There will never be another.

The era of Magic and Bird was the best ever. Bird won MVP I think 4 times. He won the NBA 3 point contest 3 times. He played one game where he shot left handed the entire game and scored over 40 points. He told Sally he was going to get the ball....take it to the corner and shoot the 3 and there's nothing you can do to stop me. And he did. He was a major trash talker. The one NBA championship game they were down by 1 with 3 seconds on the clock. Everyone knew it was going to Bird. It did....and he made a quick pass to Dennis Johnson for an easy lay up and a Championship.

Larry Bird's retirement happened at a SELL OUT Boston Garden event that DID NOT include a game. The man sold the arena OUT just to say "good bye".
As far as Bird himself, he is by far one of the most "game smart" player to exist. Not just for his own abilities on the court, but knowing the plays, player strength and weakness, match ups in speed and coverage, reading the lanes, knowing when to shoot or pass, seeing openings that aren't there WHEN he makes the pass and yet still end up being successful passes just by knowing the direction/speed and angle of the other player. Not to mention moving on to becoming a successful NBA coach as well as working the "Front Office" (GM position, I think) and recruiting players. The ONLY player to be voted as MVP as a Player, a Coach AND a General Manager.

I’m from right down the road from where Larry grew up and played High School Basketball, when you saw him come out of the locker room he was returning to the game after he shattered his cheek bone and had a concussion, he saw his teammates dropping down in points and decided to go back out and win the game for his team. But just this past week a Junior at his High School named Deion Edwards just passed up Larry’s record and he still has a whole year and a half to keep adding to his stats. Larry is above the league, he wasn’t arrogant, he wasn’t rude he just knew how to get under the skin of players on the other team. Many players feared him. There is a 4 part documentary on TH-cam about what other top players and coaches thought about Larry, it’s pretty interesting and Charles Barkley says that he was scared of Larry, Jordan was intimidated by him, Magic was too but they became very close friends, Kareem said he was the best player ever. Everyone was in awe of him but no one, and I mean no one hated him, they just respected him because he was a great man and a better than great player.

Larry Legend has the highest Basketball IQ to ever grace the court. He always knew where every player was at all times, where the best play was and could set it up. What's perhaps even more crazy than knowing where the players were, was that he always knew where the basket was. It's practically a joke, or something off of the old Looney Toons cartoons, because he'd hit so many shots without even looking, and from all different distances and angles. Flip it over his head, over his shoulder, hook it, reverse lay ups. It didn't seem to matter where he was or how he threw it.
I grew up watching him, and I've seen highlight videos many, many times, and I still to this day can scarcely believe what I'm seeing sometimes. My brain still says "what the hell did II just see?"

And that ladies and gentlemen is Larry Legend. He is top tier. He is the No 1 player to have ever played the game. Listen to other players... even they list him as their most difficult opponent. As the person they'd hope they could play like. Larry Bird had the game figured before he walked onto the court. He was strategic. He was a master at it. I've never seen a player understand the game like he could. Maybe Dennis Rodman. Rodman studied what he needed to do. To be the best rebounder. And he was. Larry's best basketball muscle was his brain. And he used it. "The hick from French Lick" educated the world on how to play ball. And if guys dont see that... well... Bless your heart.

He may not have had the athletism that guy's like Jordan & LeBron have, but he was a better basketball player. Shooting, passing, clutch, hell even rebounding somehow. The way I see it, is if you add athleticism to Bird's game, there's no question. You take away LeBron and Jordan's athleticism and they're no where near top 10 players. He made everyone around him at least 'good', even if they weren't. His full-court passes are unmatched. To understand Bird had stuff no one else did or has since, watch his full-court passes mix-- no one could do it better, more often, with less turnovers. Not Kevin Love, not LeBron, not Magic, not Jokic-- no one was even CLOSE. Bird assisted full-court passes in traffic, amid double teams, and the guys just caught it where only they could and laid in the easy lay-up--and he did it every night. His ball instinct was uncanny~ and it seemed he always knew exactly where EVERY other player was on the court, at all times. I've never seen anyone else do that. The younger crowd can "LeBron this", and "LeBron that", and I don't disagree that he's one of the best players ever~ but the Bird Man was magic.

3 pointers were barely a thing near the end of Bird's career. From 1979-1987, NBA teams averaged less than 3 3-point attempts per game. 1987-88 season shattered the previous record when teams averaged 5.0 3-point attempts per game. When Bird retired, teams averaged 7.1 3-point attempts per game, the most in NBA history since adding the 3-point line. In the 2021-22 NBA season, teams averaged 35.2 3-point attempts per game.
What's crazy is, teams actually played way more defense in Bird's career than they do now, even at 3-point range. I can't imagine what Bird would have done against today's pathetically soft defenses.

Full disclosure, I'm a Bulls fan & my favorite player is M.J. However, Larry Bird was just a 1-of-1. Just like M.J., Bird was must see TV because he always did something I've never seen before on a basketball court. Bird told you what he was going to do & then do it & players still couldn't stop him. He told one player before the game that he was going to play left handed because he was saving his right hand for the Lakers (they played L.A. 2 daya later). That’s so gangster & he put up 44pts going lefty that night. He was clutch in big moments but he was automatic in winning time. That’s what made him special. He made you want to believe that no matter what happened, there was always a chance to win. Bird has to be in the top 10 All Time somewhere. I'd put Bird around 8-10.

Larry was not only an excellent player who could do it all on the court, he was a lightning-quick at planning and reacting as a floor-general for his team. His insane passing ability was because he was the best at knowing where everyone on his team was while also tracking the directions that opposing players were moving. Superior visual-acuity + quick mental processing + fast reflexes + ambidextrous coordination + able to accurately shoot from anywhere on the floor = an unstoppable play-maker and scorer.
At the point of the highlights video when Larry goes to the locker room and then returns to continue to play, he had a fractured right cheek and refused to let his team down by letting it stop him. He was a trash-talker, but he was so tough that his ass could always cash the checks his mouth wrote. Pain meant nothing to him. He plowed through it and kept on playing the highest-level of basketball he was capable of. That was what made him unstoppable and why he's so revered as a legend.

There will NEVER be another Larry Bird. EVER. He’s the Eminem of the NBA. The GOAT. I saw the lakers Celtics battle. I was a teenager and
BELIEVE ME when I say the level of
turned up you got during that time
can never be matched. It was truly
magical and birds and magics relationship was beautiful to watch
    in real time. ❤

im a 60 year old female. as a celtics fan, i watched larry legend in the 80s. as you see it was a thing of beauty - plus watching them play on tv on the original boston gahden parquet floor; that was moved to the current td gahden. he was a trash talker and would call his shots to the defenders. his teammates had to be on always never knowing when and how he’d send the ball to them. as you saw over his shoulder, between the legs of the opponent … it was rougher back then. lt was said in the video he played one entire game left handed just cuz, and they won. he had an unusually high bball IQ as others have commented

Bird played the game in a surgical, cerebral way that no one had or has since. What's insane is because he was such a competitor is that he would be basically telling the guy defending him how he was going to get the ball and what he was going to do with it all night. And his great as his career stats were, consider that he'd do things like that, and much like Jordan, once he got hot, eventually teams starting throwing everyone at Larry trying to stop him. He'd still be scoring with the whole damn opposing team in his face.

One of the most telling clips was the one where he returned to the court to win the game with a fractured cheek. That injury would have sidelined players like LaBron for at least a month.

I can tell you I suffered this same injury just over 2 years ago and it is debilitating and you are very disoriented. Your teeth are bouncing all over the place coz your cheek bone is loose, it's fucking weird. Needless to say, it's also extremely painful. To do what he did, gather himself in the locker room and then come out and win the game for his team is hard to believe. I could barely stand up. When you hear Larry tell stories of his dad pulling his work boots on over a broken and swollen ankle coz he had to go to work, you can see where Larry got his work ethic and his guts from.

    • @ParasitikOne

Not only did he come back out he made the other team look stupid… while most likely being disoriented from a concussion and the pain of having a fractured cheekbone… that is TRUE GRIT!

The 80’s and 90’s were a different era of professional sports. You almost can’t compare. There was such mutual respect for each other back then, but at the same time the game was extremely physical and no one held back. No one sat out games to rest, they played the game because that was their job. There are great players now, but each generation paces the way for the next. Larry and Magic have to be in the top 10 no matter what!

80's basketball was so much tougher and faster than now. The Lakers and Celtics teams were deep and tough, an unbelievable rivalry. Ray was good, Kobe was great, Steph is great, every era has great players, but Magic and Larry were in a league of their own for all around greatness. So lucky to have grown up and been in L.A. in the 80's! SHOWTIME!❤❤❤

NBA basketball pretty much died for me when they started allowing zone defense (because of Shaq's dominance) and then got rid of hand checking. That's led to the crap we have today, a 3-pt contest, not basketball anymore.

From 85 - he retired, Larry played with a broken back. Yet he was still able to dominate and put up stats. In his 13 yr career. He was the FOUNDING member of the 50/40/90 twice. He led the league in 3 pointers twice 85,86. FIRST 3pt contest winner in 86 then 87, 88. MVP 84 , 85, 86. 2 Finals MVPs, 12 All star, 10 all NBA Teams, 3x All Defense selection. It took Bird just two seasons to get his first ring. Larry turned the Celtics around his first season. From a 29 - 53 season to 61 - 21 season. Larry's one of 8 hall of famers to win rookie of the year & be named to the all NBA first team. The only one so far to have those honors after Larry is Tim Duncan. Larry Bird is the only player to win Rookie of the Year, League MVP, Finals MVP, All-Star MVP, coach of the year & executive of the year. Larry is the only player Jordan couldn't beat. 6 -0 playoffs; 17 - 11 reg. Here's some of his highlights.

As a kid growing up in Boston in the 80's and early 90's... and I share his last name (no relation) I literally cried the day he retired, and I was at the gym when I watched it. Everyone stopped working out and there wasn't a dry eye anywhere. I'll never forget (and I wish they showed it) but Magic took off his shirt and underneath he wore Larry Birds Celtic Jersey. Class Act!

I knew when the Lakers played the Celtics. There was always this weird vibe of anger and awe. Then my relatives would be throwing stuff or eachother. Crazy. But you lived there during his career. Wow! Did you get a chance to go to a game? Was there really a 7yr tickets wait list, by Larry's 2nd yr?

@@ldybozz Tickets were soooo expensive! My family couldn't afford it, it wasn't like trying to get Fenway tickets to see the Red Sox. But we religiously watched the games on TV. The whole world disappeared when the game was on because nothing else mattered. Bostonians are VERY passionate fans and Larry was the kind of player that his enemies respected him because he earned it. So we loved him like he was family. Even when we lost to the Lakers, we knew were going to win the following year, Larry would see to it, and he did. It was a magical time regardless of which team you rooted for. We knew it was going to be a hard fought battle, nothing came easy for either team, those wins were earned on both sides. We hated the Lakers, but we also respected them. Unlike the New York Yankees who we straight up Hate and vice versa, lol
