    Probably better a chest harness than having anything solely around your neck like that. Even if it's 'just' elastic I suspect it could do you some damage if you fell and it was somehow caught and tugged.

      Thanks Lambda. Several comments have mentioned this and I have switched to a chest harness. Much better system.

    I would use the shunt as the primary backed up with a micro traxion below it , save you having anything around your neck , it glides through the rope very smoothly also

      Thanks. I agree that a chest harness is a better approach. The elastic around the neck has been very unpopular. Thanks for the comment.

    One of the best top rope solo vids I have seen, love the ingenuity and it seems like you have a really safe setup. nice work, I hope to climb something like that someday!

      Thanks Josh. I do feel really confident with this set-up. I'm working on a new one that might even better. I'll try to get that vid out soon. Be safe.

    This was great--something I've never tried. I have been playing with the idea of having the girls take a few lessons. But--yes, when we start hearing voices, I suppose a bit more water might be in order, lol! Thanks for sharing.

      Thanks Richard. When I can't make time to do an overnighter somewhere heading out to vantage is only a half day trip for me so it's a perfect 2nd best.

    Oh my god! Don’t put that around your neck!! 😳🤦‍♂️ also I would attach each device on its own separate locker draw/ locker.

      Thanks for the comment. It's just the elastic band from an old pair of underware. It stretches so much it pops off very easily, and however, it does seem to draw a lot of 'not a good idea' comments so I'm rethinking it. I did get an over the shoulder chest strap and am working at incorporating that. Safe climbing!

      @@tonyshikes I would highly recommend taking a course from a guide. You can learn a lot and could save your life. You can very be too careful in climbing. Think about things thoroughly before leaving the ground if something doesn’t make sense than don’t do it, it’s not worth injury or death.

    I use a strap around my shoulders in lieu of a loop around my neck as I'm not sure if it could hang me in a freak event.

    • @tonyshikes
      @tonyshikes  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, much better idea Troy. I've switched to the same thing myself. Actually that elastic underware band I'm sure would pop off but it did seem to bother a lot of people. Be safe.

    Interesting video and it looks like a nice place to climb. I was wondering if you would let folks know what it’s called and where it is located. It looks a lot like the Big Bend area of south Texas. Thanks!

    could you have clipped into that bolt you were next to as a safety in case a device or prusik fails?

    • @tonyshikes

      Yes, absolutely! I should have. I didn't even notice it till others pointed it out in the video. Thanks for the tip!

    First of all I'm no expert either, but is there a risk that with the rollnlock and the shunt connected together by the quickdraw that if the rollnlock catches a fall first it could prevent the shunt from activating and catching you??? are they really independent???

    • @tonyshikes
      @tonyshikes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Richard. Hey, first let me say that their are times when the whole thing feels sketchy. I mean it's one thing to lean back and test it while you're on the ground but it's completely different when you're in the air starting to loose your grip on the rock. For this reason I usually only climb 'juggy' sport routes. I never push the envelop. I'm just out getting sun, hiking and probably more 'rambling' that actual 'climbing' (with a rope to be safe). I don't consider myself a rock climber. Just a guy who likes being outside. Regarding your question. They both seem to actuate at about the same time. The whole point is if one fails, you've still got the redundancy. I've never taken a fall on this system because when I start slipping I usually just lean back and weight the rope. Again I stick with very 'juggy' sport routes and minimize as much risk as possible. All the best. Stay safe.

    I don’t get it. If the shunt disconnects (this is a Real possibility) and the rope is not double anchored to the top (meaning each branch of the rope needs its individual anchor point) then you can slide down to the bottom

    • @tonyshikes
      @tonyshikes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The rope is double anchored at the top. You can hang from either side of the rope and it will not move. The shunt slips over both ropes and when you attach a carabiner it cannot come off.

    You are influencing others though, whether you like it or not. You’re suggesting ‘this’ works for you, without training etc. So ‘this’ might work for me. I find it doesn’t, but don’t worry, I won’t sue, cos I’m dead!

      Eric, you are totally correct. It never occurred to me to use my PAS at a bolt. I guess I was saving that for the anchors but I never seem to get all the way up TO the anchors! Thanks for the comment. I'll look into the chest harness thing.
