I have and will always love Doctor Who. I've really not been happy with Doctor Who. After Peter Capaldi and Steven Moffat left, Doctor Who really went downhill. Series 10 was a sign that Doctor Who that was starting to run out of ideas. Chris Chibnall's bad writing, lack of fresh new ideas for the show, retconning and his questionable poor decisions not only let the show down, but also let Jodie Whittaker down too. When Jodie Whittaker was announced I had mixed feelings. I never liked the idea that The Doctor being a woman and it concerned me cos it may not had worked and it could ruin the show and it would not be Doctor Who anymore and it didn't make sense. However, I gave Jodie Whittaker a fair chance and I actually hoped she would a great Doctor Who. How wrong I was! I realize now that it's not Jodie Whittaker's fault and that at the end of the day it is Chris Chibnall's fault. Chris Chibnall cast her and he lazily wrote the character of The 13th Doctor. Most of Whittaker's acting and performances weren't fantastic, but in some episodes she did give very good performances and I think she tried to be better in the role in Series 13. "The Timeless Children" the Series 13 finale made me so angry and it convinced me that it was time to take a break from watching Doctor Who. Chris Chibnall really went too far especially with screwing up the mythology of The Doctor and the Time Lords and revealing Time Lord society was all built on a lie and that The Doctor (The Timeless Child) has unlimited Regenerations and this really made the rules that Time Lords can only regenerate 12 times and the 2013 Xmas special "Time of the Doctor" redundant. If The Doctor has unlimited regenerations why did the Time Lords give The Doctor a new Regeneration cycle on Trenzalore? Pointless! Like the finale of Game of Thrones in 2019, "The Timeless Children" is one of the worst finales/season finales of a TV show ever. Giving Doctor Who a break wasn't a easy decision to make. Hopefully, if Doctor Who doesn't cancelled and if I heard Doctor Who will start getting better again, I may start watching it again when the time is right.
This series had Russel T Davies' fingerprints all over it. He wrote fully eight of the thirteen episodes of the first season, and in general probably had more control over the show than any showrunner has had since. And he was determined to keep the show faithful both to its roots and to *his* own filmography. That meant the usual RTD mix. Soap opera influences. Social commentary. An abundance of Welshness. And of course, meaningful LGBT representation in Captain Jack, which we may take for granted now, but fifteen years ago, on a mainstream family programme ("think of the children!") was a bold and even transgressive statement. The funny thing is that none of the elements above were particularly synonymous with classic Who. The idea of "Eastenders in space" had never really been done before, and the overtly political turn the show had taken in the Sylvester McCoy era had ended in cancellation. It's pretty amazing that the revival got greenlit. (But I'm so glad it did.)
Completely agree, never really cared about rose as a companion but that’s just personal preference. Brilliant season with great acting, writing and production value. An invaluable foundation.
Richard Whinnett I thought she was fine in season 1, and I didn’t have a problem with her in season 2 (at the time) but it annoyed me that she overshadowed both Martha and Donna in the subsequent seasons despite not being present for most of it, and having just rewatched season 2 I have realised how annoying she was there as well. I conclude that she was the perfect companion for Chris Eccleston's Doctor but didn’t really work well with David Tennant.
@@intergalactic92 I can accept they kept Rose for series 2 to give new viewers familiarity after the regeneration, as Rose was going through the same thing as the viewers. Rose could have left after that, and not return in series 3 and 4.
I have so much nostalgia for this season. I was about 10 years old and came across Doctor Who on Netflix and started watching from the beginning. It was so good coming back to it.
Just been rewatching nuwho from the start, just finished series 2. You really do forget how good Chris Eccleston was as the Doctor, and his relationship with Rose was great. Yet as good as Rose was in season 1 I have discovered with some regret that Rose in season 2 is annoying. Where she would call out Nine for his brashness she basically hero worshiped Ten, which makes the relationship less interesting. And then she would metaphorically stamp her foot whenever she didn’t get her way..... I guess what I’m saying is that ten and Rose is not the great engaging relationship that I remember.
I feel like 9 and rose were more of a contrary’s that worked well together, but rose and 10 were almost too similar? So they fed off each other’s carefreeness and there wasn’t as much of a balance.
As someone who has only recently started watching this series, I don’t think there’s could of been a better beginning to sell me on this show. I’ve heard and saw great things about all the modern Doctors, but I believe Eccleston will remain my favorite.
Series one was the best, Eccleston was the best, can’t believe when people say to skip him like how could you be a fan in saying that. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
"it put the Who back in Doctor Who, reinstating the mistery of his past" yep that's what Davies wanted to do. I was reading a joint interview of RTD and Verity Lambert, and he was saying exactly this, that he wanted to capture that feeling of freedom and endless possibilities of 1963 It was quite interesting, I suggest you check it out
Series 1 was a revelation to me, and the thing that really made it work was definitely the writing. I went into it thinking Doctor Who was something that was probably better off left alone, with nothing to sully my memories of the amazing treasure that is Tom Baker. But by the time I had gotten through the first 10 minutes of "Aliens of London", I was sold, and I knew I would have to see everything. I won't try to list all the things that make that series so special for me or I'll end up doing my own video - but I will say that Christopher Eccleston definitely gets my vote for the most interesting of all the Doctors.
I remember seeing a news article not too long ago where Christoper was talking about his time as the doctor. He mentioned suffering with anorexia (the eating disorder) quite badly during the filming of the first series. Props to him he’s an amazing actor and glad he’s gotten better
i wonder if that why his jacket was so big? i remember watching Fathers day for the first time and being shocked at how skinny he was, i really didnt expect it cos his oversized leather jacet hides it so well. i didnt expect him to be build like Capt. Jack.. but also didnt expect him to be as skinny (or even more so) than tennant
The current show runner should look at this and learn. The show was written by Doctor Who fans, who paid attention to the lore of Doctor Who and tear it down.
I loved all the Doctors in the T Davies and Moffat era and would probably call 12 my favorite but I have the most respect for Eccleston. He was the Doctor and he remained the Doctor after the director said "cut". His reasons for leaving the BBC were (rumored) to be involved with the treatment of others that he would not abide. Can't get much more Doctor-y than that. Oh and of course, he was "fantastic" but that part is obvious.
@@HarboWholmes - there's a lot to cover, but all of it interesting. Especially the format wars! As you said, Russell, Paul, Mark and Steven were prominent writers in The Wilderness Years, but did you know they only wrote for New Adventure novels? Robert Shearman is the only Audio writer to date to write for the modern show. There were all kinds of Doctor Who formats but, essentially, New Adventure won.
I absolutely agree with you about the importance of Rose. RTD was fabulous at fleshing out the companions during his time as show runner. It’s one of problems I had with Moffat. Other than Amy, no other companion seemed like a complete character. Chibnall has the same problem. I actually like Jodie as the Doctor. I am board to death with her companions.
This is the only perfect season of Doctor Who ever. No bad episodes, all have something that makes them worthy, no boring ones. All have character moments that disappear in later seasons.
Rewatching the series made me decide it's my second favourite series. I really appreciate these videos you make every week m8 - always fun before I rewatch a S1 episode 😝 - G
I just realized that if Doctor Who ended with series 1 it might end up becoming whole new reboot instead of continuity of Classic Series. Maybe series 1 wasn't even planned to tie up with classic series.
I was a Doctor Who fan as a child, the new series from the first episode had me hooked as I live in Cardiff & the shop Rose worked in & was blown up was a department store I worked in during college & hated, so big cheer from me.
When Doctor Who returned 15 years ago I really thought it was a reboot and Doctor Who had been started all over again and it had nothing to do with the classic series or the 1996 TV movie. From my point of view, Christopher Eccleston was William Hartnell and Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) was his first companion to travel with him in the TARDIS and instead of leaving Gallfrey to explore Time and Space in the TARDIS, The Doctor would be the only surviving Time Lord and is left wandering when Gallifrey is destroyed in the Time War which The Daleks would later be revealed to be the alien race The Time Lords fought against in the Time War. I later realized it wasn't a reboot and it was a sequel series and a direct continuation of the classic series when Elisabeth Sladen returned as Sarah Jane Smith and John Leeson returns as the voice of K9 and nods and references to the classic series and Sarah mentioning to Rose some of her adventures with The Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker). Thanks to Russell T. Davies, the revived series of Doctor Who was huge success and Doctor Who became more popular than ever before. "Rose" which introduced The 9th Doctor and Rose Tyler was a good start to the revived series and it was fast paced and it reminded me of the classic TV show "The Avengers". Christopher Eccleston was a good Doctor and he was across between Tom Baker and Sylvester McCoy. He had good chemistry with Billie Piper. Such a shame it was his only season in the role. But, it worked out for the best. David Tennant (The Tenth Doctor) is my favourite Doctor and he was brilliant in the role and when David Tennant took over from Christopher Eccelston, Doctor Who really became a more popular TV program and gained a new generation of fans and viewers. The revived series of Doctor Who is not a reboot, it is the new adventures of The Doctor and the show was brilliantly modernized and Russell T. Davies successfully brought Doctor Who into the 21st Century. The revived series really improved with the acting, pacing, writing, storyteller, character developments, special effects, makeup and the change of format. 2005 was the right year and right time to bring Doctor Who back to TV screens.
Don´t forget: The REAL reason why Doctor Who came back was the character of Oliver wearing a sweater with the words "bring back Doctor Who" written on it in season 4 of the BBC show Coupling! (written by Steven Moffat!)
SERIES 1 is FANTASTIC! What a way to bring back the show. Your video nailed it on the head. It's my second favourite series of Doctor Who with not one episode being "bad" to me. It close to perfect. Well done RTD, well done. Also, love these videos and can't wait for "Christmas Invasion" now.
i’ve been rewatching from the start of new who too, clearly going much faster then you aha you really do see how far it’s come and i would’ve loved to see eccleston do another season or even two more !
Defo one of my fav doctors, the storylines of the early series are far superior to the ones we have now. Will forever cherish Ecc for introducing me the the doctor who franchise.
This is my favourite NuWho series. It has always been a step above the ones that followed. Christopher Eccleston is one of my favourite Doctors, alongside Patrick Troughton.
Eccleston was my Dad's favourite but I was born in 2001 so I thought he was from classic Who bc like Doctor Who was about Martha Jones as far as I was concerned at the time
I never saw Doctor Who in the classic Era, but I did see the movie. I had no idea that it was supposed to be a children's show! I just thought it was good sci-fi!
Through the luxury and convenience of streaming services, I've been able to understand and accept that I'm only interested in watching episodes from the classic series indirectly, because of my love of the show since the '05 revival. It took me a bit to come to that realization, but once I did, I opted to not actively attempt to watch the old show. If not for what came later, I would never have attempted to watch any of them. I didn't think it was BAD or anything. But it's like the show I would come to enjoy so much......"wasn't done cooking yet."
So my friend is thinking about starting doctor who. I absolutely love the show and I've seen all the episodes so many times I can't count. But I still don't know where I would reccommend for my friend to start. My personal favourite doctor is either 10 or 11, 11 mainly for nostalgia. I don't want my friend to start on Eccleston and then not like it and be discouraged to continue watching. But then again, it's a great series for information about doctor who as a show. What series would you recommend for a beginner? (Modern Who)
I was so confused until I saw the war doctor after the 8th doctor and that he fought the war and then regenerated into the 9th doctor, it’s so weird cause I thought all time lords were wiped out since the first doctor...
Correction: Christopher Eccleston, wasn't force to leave... he chose to quit ,because of the fear of being type cast, but the mean reason was due to him falling out with some of the production team at the time that were working on Doctor who
Remembering Jackie and Micky both went out of their way to get Rose back to save the Doctor when they both had good reasons to want him out of their lives 😭😭
Do comments with "que*r" automatically get taken down now? Cos I've tried to recommend RTD's Que*r as Folk *three times now!!* (on different channels.) Well, check it out. And The Writer's Tale!
@@alfiethomas5632 - I don't even bother trying to put into words how much I love it. You just *know* those characters. There's barely even any plot, watching it is just you and Russell revelling in how quickly you understood them.
How far the series has come from “a ordinary man being alive” being the most dangerous thing and crashing the entire universe, to the doctor having been involved in creating at least three immortal(-ish?) entities to my knowledge when I stopped watching the series.
Even with only 1 series The Ninth Doctor ended his ark perfectly. He would have been The Best Doctor even with one series. But later episodes destroyed this. 1. Tenth Doctor still mourning over time war when nine already accepted that. 2. Nine not being the one who destroyed Gallifrey. 3. Gallifrey is actually okay and turns out Nine is mourning for nothing.

The best series of New Who for me. Christopher Eccleston is awesome
I love how session one feels grounded and I think it’s the most underrated season in new who
RTD was a fucking genius reimagining the Doctor in this way, combining a serious take, drama, romance. ROMANCE?? mental
And soap!! An absolute genius, yeah.
I only recently watched Series 1 and I was blown away of how good it was.
I have so much nostalgia for this season. I was about 10 years old and came across Doctor Who on Netflix and started watching from the beginning. It was so good coming back to it.
This is my favourite series of new who. Even though I was only 2 when it came out I still grew up constantly watching the box set.
Can you do the same treatment that you gave dr who for Sarah Jane smith adventures?
Yes, I would love this
Dewit
As someone who has only recently started watching this series, I don’t think there’s could of been a better beginning to sell me on this show. I’ve heard and saw great things about all the modern Doctors, but I believe Eccleston will remain my favorite.
Series one was the best, Eccleston was the best, can’t believe when people say to skip him like how could you be a fan in saying that. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
"it put the Who back in Doctor Who, reinstating the mistery of his past" yep that's what Davies wanted to do. I was reading a joint interview of RTD and Verity Lambert, and he was saying exactly this, that he wanted to capture that feeling of freedom and endless possibilities of 1963
It was quite interesting, I suggest you check it out
Series 1 was a revelation to me, and the thing that really made it work was definitely the writing.
We love some Harbo Holmes.
That time monster clip was not a useless bit in the episode it was a great world building clip.
On discord, I challenged Harbo to use a clip from the Time Monster so don't blame him
Woah. So I'm not the only one who loved this series and thought Christopher Eccleston was the best then?
Does this mean you're gonna do a review for each episode of the modern show?
If so, then this gets me bloody excited.
Yes
I'd love a video exploring The Wilderness Years! *Bizarrely, I consider it to be the most interesting era.*
Ooh, that could be fun
@@HarboWholmes - there's a lot to cover, but all of it interesting. Especially the format wars! As you said, Russell, Paul, Mark and Steven were prominent writers in The Wilderness Years, but did you know they only wrote for New Adventure novels?
Robert Shearman is the only Audio writer to date to write for the modern show. There were all kinds of Doctor Who formats but, essentially, New Adventure won.
Actually, was it Virgin Novels they wrote for? Or Target? Well, one of 'em.
Actually Gatiss wrote (and starred in) a lot of Big Finish stories :)
@@HarboWholmes - well, only two, I think.
“I’ll tell you what it will be...”
Fantastic?
“A trip of a lifetime”
My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.
Hey, Bill and Nardole are so great.
Love this video, I am planning to start my own review channel and you're a massive inspiration to me
That was an awesome series of videos, good job man. Looking forward to series 2!
This is the only perfect season of Doctor Who ever. No bad episodes, all have something that makes them worthy, no boring ones. All have character moments that disappear in later seasons.
Best series are 1,4,8 and 9. I like 9th series the most
How don't you have more subscribers. Your videos are amazing. So well thought out and edited perfectly. Thank you
Rewatching the series made me decide it's my second favourite series.
I really appreciate these videos you make every week m8 - always fun before I rewatch a S1 episode 😝 - G
I'm glad you enjoy them!
I think your favourite series of doctor who is season 1!! Just a guess!! 😂
Haha, well, it's close but it's actually not!
I think its 9 tho lol...probably gonna have to wait a long time for that 😂
Harbo Wholmes I feel like you are subtlety asking us what your favourite REALLY is, so I’ll ask. What REALLY is your favourite?
My favourite is easily Series 9 closely followed by Series 4
@@HarboWholmes series 9? Really? I like series 9 but it's no series 4
I just realized that if Doctor Who ended with series 1 it might end up becoming whole new reboot instead of continuity of Classic Series. Maybe series 1 wasn't even planned to tie up with classic series.
The series that got my into DW and my forever favorite
I was a Doctor Who fan as a child, the new series from the first episode had me hooked as I live in Cardiff & the shop Rose worked in & was blown up was a department store I worked in during college & hated, so big cheer from me.
I thought I was the only parson who thought that the time war had always been a thing
My childhood, my fave doctor, my fave companion and Captain jack was a badass! Plus Eccleston was born in my town so good days
8.50 i thought exactly the same! i assumed he'd been the last of the time lords since the first doctor
i’ve been rewatching from the start of new who too, clearly going much faster then you aha you really do see how far it’s come and i would’ve loved to see eccleston do another season or even two more !
Doctor Who an island of sanity in an ocean of reality shows
Lynda's death will never not hurt to see, it's such an intense and well connected series of TV.
Nice, Harbo completed my challenge
Please can you do a Victory of the Daleks defending the despised episode please?
Brilliant review of a brilliant series. Keep it up Harbo!
#DontSkipNine
i'm glad my friend was insistent that we start at Nine.
I wish I seen it premiere back in 2005 but I was 4 years old and hooked on Marvel movies and Batman Begins and also Star Wars
Yeah, Simon Pegg was way more terrifying than that pimple on the ceiling.
Defo one of my fav doctors, the storylines of the early series are far superior to the ones we have now. Will forever cherish Ecc for introducing me the the doctor who franchise.
I love the fact that I can watch these episodes over and over again and still love them
This is my favourite NuWho series. It has always been a step above the ones that followed. Christopher Eccleston is one of my favourite Doctors, alongside Patrick Troughton.
I think the Nesteen looking bad kinda helps, after all it is a vat of sentient molten plastic
0:30 hmm that sounds very familiar Cough cough dr who season 11, 12, and 13!!
0:32 anyone else see Ten and Rose running on the grass on New Earth (new new new) on their first adventure together?
Nope, I only see five and Tegan stumbling through a shoddy soundstage
@@EditedAF987 yeah I meant they recreated the shot in 2x01 😱
Through the luxury and convenience of streaming services, I've been able to understand and accept that I'm only interested in watching episodes from the classic series indirectly, because of my love of the show since the '05 revival. It took me a bit to come to that realization, but once I did, I opted to not actively attempt to watch the old show. If not for what came later, I would never have attempted to watch any of them. I didn't think it was BAD or anything. But it's like the show I would come to enjoy so much......"wasn't done cooking yet."
"The supporting characters of series one are all really good"
Exept adam
Excellent video, you are very talented!
New Who Series 01 is what turned me into a Whovian and I've never looked back. Love the 2005 series forever!
Fun fact: Everytime now, I hear Britney Spears´ song "Toxic", I think of Rose Tyler.....
A new video! Very Exciting!
9 was absolutely fantastic!
❤️❤️
Do comments with "que*r" automatically get taken down now? Cos I've tried to recommend RTD's Que*r as Folk *three times now!!* (on different channels.) Well, check it out. And The Writer's Tale!
So glad I've seen someone recommend this, it's one of RTD's best creative works and deserves a lot more love and attention
@@alfiethomas5632 - I don't even bother trying to put into words how much I love it. You just *know* those characters. There's barely even any plot, watching it is just you and Russell revelling in how quickly you understood them.
@@alfiethomas5632 - have you seen Bob and Rose? Supposed to be his best, but I haven't gotten round to it yet.
One thing about the TV movie is that we really need more of the 8th doctor, he was so good but he could have been better
The pacing makes classic DW hard for ME to watch.
s1 used to be my emotional support series at.... fourteen I think
Been waiting for this👀
He was indeed, fantastic.
Absolutely fantastic!
You forgot to review Series 1 episode 14 though. Doctor Who and the Curse of the Heaton Park Litterers (2019)
It also stands alone.
How far the series has come from “a ordinary man being alive” being the most dangerous thing and crashing the entire universe, to the doctor having been involved in creating at least three immortal(-ish?) entities to my knowledge when I stopped watching the series.
Awesome and detailed vid!
A TIER = ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC TIER
I could not have put it better myself.
Series 1 is still one of the best
Even with only 1 series The Ninth Doctor ended his ark perfectly. He would have been The Best Doctor even with one series. But later episodes destroyed this.
1. Tenth Doctor still mourning over time war when nine already accepted that.
2. Nine not being the one who destroyed Gallifrey.
3. Gallifrey is actually okay and turns out Nine is mourning for nothing.
Is the series 1 blu Ray good people say it’s 24fps rather than the 25fps it was broadcasted at and it makes it slow and some reviews say the cgi is a bit ruff because the upscaling if anyone reply I will thank you
I use the Blu-Rays for my reviews, so you can see for yourself the image quality lol. I really don't think the slowdown is noticeable and the CGI is obviously not going to be amazing because it wasn't to start with
Harbo Wholmes ok thanks
