im on a rewatch binge, and i love the detail of ten enjoying christmas dinner with rose, jackie, and mickey. i cant remember which series one episode, but nine was invited to spend time with rose and her family, and he vehemently turns the offer down with what i feel is his own discomfort with that level of intimacy and connection with humans. he doesn’t want to damage himself further. eccleston always has this undercurrent of pain and loss that forces him to play the outsider looking in, while tennant’s first foray into the doctor feels like the character giving that connection and intimacy another go. he finally allows himself to enjoy the smaller aspects of human life, of rose’s life. while this episode is definitely not my favorite, this scene stuck out to me as a great “show don’t tell” development for the doctor.
Ah, yes. My favourite Doctor gets the spotlight now. I'm excited to see your take on him, as he's sadly become in many ways misunderstood in the public consciousness or treated like he's overrated. While Eccleston definitely deserves all the praise he gets, I feel Tennant deserves just us much. Also, the Tenth Doctor really helped me through a very hard time in my life, so I naturally hold him in high regard.
@@blobfish5730 Many feel the same. My point is that people write him off as overrated (much like Batman) to the point that they ignore the parts of his arc and character that are truly amazing. And, in fact, in recent years he's been significantly sidelined, at least from what I've seen. It's probably a side effect of being the Doctor at the time that the show really began to pull in viewers internationally.
The Christmas Invasion was a work of brilliance by RTD that cemented David Tenent as one of the most fleshed out and dominant Doctors of the Who universe.
What also helped with coping to the idea of regeneration, which was missing from your video essay, was the "Born Again" minisode from Children In Need 2005, which served as a good stepping stone between the Series 1 finale in June and The Christmas Invasion in December. It helped give the new Doctor a chance to explain to fans it's still the same character by reminding Rose about their first moment together in a word: Run. It gave us a bit more time to see a different actor in the previous Doctor's outfit so the audience could mentally adjust to the idea of regeneration a bit more, which is why I think the raggedy Doctor worked of 11 still being in 10's clothes for most of the episode. (Same for 13 in 12's costume in Series 11) It's also what starts the idea for new audiences that the Doctor's regeneration process can be wonky before fully stabilising as well as cause the Tardis to crash land in the Christmas Invasion opening.
The Christmas Invasion, although not my favourite Christmas special, definitely does Christmas at home the best - I think it's the only episode, save the end of The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe and small segments of The Time of The Doctor where the story actually places a heavy value on the joy of Christmas at home with family, and you definitely feel that here. I also think that this ties with The Eleventh Hour for the best post-regeneration episode; it has the most obvious 'click' moments where the new Doctor becomes The Doctor - the main one for me is that moment where he swaggers into the Tylers' flat with his new outfit and the scene just screams Doctor at you
Yeah I never understood the critism for Roses Reaction in this Episode. The Regeneration hit her completely out of the Blue, so all the Confusion and Worriness made Sense. Claras Reaction to Smith regenerating into Capaldi was much weirder. She has a similar Reaction to Rose, but SHE allready knew what was coming. She has seen all the Doctors past Faces, she was informed by Eleventh that he had to regenerate and she knew what that meant. So it is weird that she reacts in the way she does. For Rose it made sense, but not for Clara. But I did like Clara a lot anyways.
I think in Clara's case, it was partially the loss of control. She was established to be a control freak and she knew how to handle Smith's Doctor. Also, let's face it, Capaldi did nothing to build Clara's trust, abandoning her during their first adventure together and then doing so again in Kill the Moon. He just expected Clara to do all the legwork in their relationship and even whined at her if she didn't meet his expectations, whilst having the audacity to accuse HER of doing the whining after her boyfriend died and she let the Doctor vent about the incident at the volcano without complaint. Another example of the Doctor gaslighting and projecting his own flaws onto Clara is the "you can't see me" bullshit. That's incredibly hypocritical because the Doctor spent no less than 10 out of 13 LIFETIMES, and just one of those lifetimes could last for centuries never mind all of them combined, being completely oblivious to the fact that Clara kept saving his ungrateful ass.
@@tomnorton4277 oh, their relationship was clearly flawed and you are absolutely right here. But I was specifically talking about her reaction right after his Regeneration up to the Moment she talked with Madam Vastra. It seems very out of place at that point. The control freak Thing makes kinda sense though. I am still not happy about it, because to me it seemed as if Moffat was trying to project the Matt Smith fangirl Problem on Clara.
After watching the 5th Doctor a bunch of years ago, I think this episode was a throwback to his serial "Castrovalva". Mainly because in both "The Christmas Invasion" and "Castrovalva" The Doctor is mostly absent (from the story and from being in control), while his companions try to help him "heal" during the regeneration process and try to deter the threat from escalating while The Doctor" is still spazing out from regeneration. If that makes sense? And I think that's the case because the 5th Doctor is David Tennant's favorite Doctor (and mine too). So in my mind that's a possibility. Also as far as David Tennant's performance, he did really pull it off. Because in retrospect I think at first he can come across as "unassuming" (for some reason) and then he ends up showing his authority (in the role) and it works right from the start...and that helps. But yeah I love "The Christmas Invasion" and I don't mind how random and corny it might be at times. And I also don't mind the Christmas setting, I think it just makes things that much more bizarre. But that's just me. 😕🤷♀️
I also wondered if that was at least in part a throwback to William Hartnell's last episode with his regeneration. He wasn't around for most of it due to health reasons. So, it became more of a companion driven story too.
This was the very first episode of "NuWho" I ever watched. Sure, it's not that great in comparison to Doctor Who's catalogue, but this was my first introduction to the modern show. And as a 13 year old at the time, it didn't disappoint.
8:52 *cough* Maggie *cough* Destroying a ship in retreat is a reference to the Falklands. Even in Tooth in Claw, 10 remarks *"Margeret Thatcher - urgh!"*
Personally I remember being disappointed as a kid how little the Doctor was in it. I think they could have had a little more of the new Doctor without alienating the audience.
Hey, this is a really good review. You make some interesting points, particularly about the groundwork being laid for future series finales; which I didn't notice before! Not that I'm expecting a video about it, but what did you think of the 'prequel' to this episode (the Children In Need 2005 mini-episode)? Did it work as a link between The Parting of The Ways and The Christmas Invasion? Does the latter work without the mini-episode? It would be interesting to know your thoughts. Keep up the good work anyway!
I think the mini-episode is a nice little bonus thing, but it's not necessary to understand anything in Christmas Invasion. I think it's a fun little thing and it's nice to have that added character moment between the two, but it's definitely not required viewing. It is a good link though! Minisodes are always a good extra thing to have in Doctor Who
Once again you mention how well RTD introduced a new Doctor, this time citing how the limited screen time creates greater impact for when he does make a triumphant return, and doesn’t overwhelm us with his new personality, and once again I am reminded of Matt Smith's opening episode which does not do this......
However, I feel like Matt Smiths beginning is the exception to this. Unlike Tennant’s and Capaldi’s first episodes, Matt Smith’s first ep had no reoccurring characters. No same companions or supporting cast. For Tennant’s first ep you relied on Rose, Micky, Jackie, and Harriet to carry you through the episode to provide familiarity. Same with Clara, Jenny, Vastra, and Strax helping you with Capaldi. When Stephen Moffat took over, the show was given a soft reboot with little to no prior context, except for Matt wearing David’s torn up suit and expelling regeneration energy in his first shot. This allowed a new audience to watch the show without feeling left out. I feel like that without those reoccurring characters for the 11th Hour, you almost had to have Matt Smith involved with the entire episode because it’s us getting used to him the entire run. If he had been gone the episode wouldn’t have worked solely relying on Amy and Rory since we hadn’t met them yet. Hope that makes sense.
Hannah Merlino Eccleston's first episode focused on Rose, The Doctor is a side character. But that is the least of the problems I had with Eleventh Hour, I didn’t even realise this until it was pointed out how important it was to limit the Doctor's first appearance here. It’s just another thing on the list.
I think it is a below average episode, that is right until the words “did you miss me?” , that scene is raising the story to a whole other level, and I love it.
Yes. I remember being disappointed that he was sleeping the entire time and then He wakes up, opens the door to the Tardis and steals the whole episode. What a legend.

It's weird how Torchwood (the series) rarely ever mentions UNIT. Was there a particular reason for that like they were disbanded and I've merely forgotten ? One that had various factors and moving parts but essentially what we got was Agent Coulson kool kids gang that completely ignored that S.H.I.E.L.D. even existed. @@JTeenmining yeah maybe if they would’ve shot the ship down earlier in. the episode it would’ve made sense
Lets be honest: Ten being hot, helped a lot!
Why would that help?
@@blobfish5730 Have you seen the success of Love Island? People don't watch that because it's good.
Of course it helped and what's wrong with that?
im on a rewatch binge, and i love the detail of ten enjoying christmas dinner with rose, jackie, and mickey. i cant remember which series one episode, but nine was invited to spend time with rose and her family, and he vehemently turns the offer down with what i feel is his own discomfort with that level of intimacy and connection with humans. he doesn’t want to damage himself further. eccleston always has this undercurrent of pain and loss that forces him to play the outsider looking in, while tennant’s first foray into the doctor feels like the character giving that connection and intimacy another go. he finally allows himself to enjoy the smaller aspects of human life, of rose’s life. while this episode is definitely not my favorite, this scene stuck out to me as a great “show don’t tell” development for the doctor.
And that why I hate Chinball and his explain, explain explain
I feel like he is ridiculously overrated
@@blobfish5730 Many feel the same. My point is that people write him off as overrated (much like Batman) to the point that they ignore the parts of his arc and character that are truly amazing. And, in fact, in recent years he's been significantly sidelined, at least from what I've seen. It's probably a side effect of being the Doctor at the time that the show really began to pull in viewers internationally.
#10thebest❤️❤️
Allonsy!
Eccleston and Tennant made the show great!
I think matt smiths introduction is the best personally, even though he is not my favourite.
Cant believe he didn’t show the best part in my opinion
“Mickey hello! :D” he finally got mickey’s name
The Christmas Invasion was a work of brilliance by RTD that cemented David Tenent as one of the most fleshed out and dominant Doctors of the Who universe.
Meh, Capaldi is more dominant.
(Same for 13 in 12's costume in Series 11)
It's also what starts the idea for new audiences that the Doctor's regeneration process can be wonky before fully stabilising as well as cause the Tardis to crash land in the Christmas Invasion opening.
This episode holds a very special place in my heart since it's the first I watched. It really puts me in that festive mood lol.
I am still not happy about it, because to me it seemed as if Moffat was trying to project the Matt Smith fangirl Problem on Clara.
world is going to end
Doctor: I sleep
Idc what anybody says Jackie cracks me tf up man I love her
Yes!
Thank you for continuing with these!!! It’s my favourite TH-cam series
Incase no one realised Rose/Jackie’s neighbour who was being blood controlled was Paul Anderson, AKA Arthur Shelby
So, everything they failed to do when introducing the 13th Doctor then.
I have a solution for that.... ignore the damm seadon... not worth it...
This was the very first episode of "NuWho" I ever watched. Sure, it's not that great in comparison to Doctor Who's catalogue, but this was my first introduction to the modern show. And as a 13 year old at the time, it didn't disappoint.
Next episode: defending Fear Her
Best birthday present
Happy birthday!
@@amyroberts534 Thanks :)
Its a good episode cause it started the Christmas trend it was a brilliant idea that Russel thought off
5:08 they were there when the Pandorica Opened in season 5
Now you’ve got me in the Christmas mood.
8:52 *cough* Maggie *cough*
Destroying a ship in retreat is a reference to the Falklands. Even in Tooth in Claw, 10 remarks *"Margeret Thatcher - urgh!"*
RTD really doesn't like politicians!
Except that ship was 'retreating' in the same way that a yo-yo goes 'down'.
The Christmas Invasion has my favourite scene in Doctor Who
As an American, hearing Harbo use "homely" in the British manner, to mean "home-like" cracks me up.
Love the intro. Liked for that one ;)
Anyone know why the earlier seasons has that white glare flare filter, it was mostly present in the first 2 seasons, made it look really glossy
Just a cheap look. No clue why.
What a legend.
lmao, that ending was mint.
Actually that's my favorite part of Doctor Who is the Christmas specials including and the first one up is Doctor Who Christmas Invasion. By far was the starting point to every good Christmas special I've ever seen a bride and a few others the first one that came out was with Billie Piper and Christopher Eccleston when they both met Charles Dickens Christmas special so actually that was one of the first Christmas specials the Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper did together before he left the show so my honest opinion that was the first one the second one was the Christmas Invasion but to me I enjoyed it very very much
lol "If people didn't like David Tennant"
You're funny.
Tenth doctor introduction showed how good a British production and effects can be be, unlike Chris Chibnall who has be trying to Americanize the doctor. The greatest tenth doctor production was the 3 part missing earth .
It's weird how Torchwood (the series) rarely ever mentions UNIT. Was there a particular reason for that like they were disbanded and I've merely forgotten ? It makes me think why Agents of Shield failed to grab my interest. I wanted to see a wider more earthbound view of the MCU. One that had various factors and moving parts but essentially what we got was Agent Coulson kool kids gang that completely ignored that S.H.I.E.L.D. even existed.
My impression being that Torchwwod worked because it separated itself from UNIT in name and not just practice.
I had no idea that there was no Christmas specials in the classic series
Can we get a waters of Mars review ?
He's doing all of them in order so he will just not for a while
I really enjoy this special too
would you ever do in depth videos focused on main Classic Who companion? for example i'd love to learn more about sarah jane and ace (i know i could just read the wiki but it's not the same)
DT is my doctor.
This is my go to episode whenever I want some nice comfy, tasty who :)
@Harbo Wholmes his Xmas special was my favourite xmas special , but Matt Smiths Christmas Carol outdoes them all i hope you review A Christmas Carol because its a Masterpiece IMO.
You say that you wish the Sycorax could come back? Well you got your wish, but probably not in the way you expected.
I see that Scrublords opening with Woolie at the beginning.
Who gave you a dislike, your one of the best channels on TH-cam
Gosh I love ten
First time I ever watched this episode, I was unwell like the Doctor. But then again, I wasn't suffering post-regeneration trauma, I was feeling the kind of sick that involved vomit
The blood control what's not magic it was technology as it was explained in the episode
I wish that Scene where the Doctor disown harriet jones and gets her kicked hrom office had more of a consequence on the Doctor that cause people too die which may play on the Doctors Consensus
@Jacob Wood I loved that detail so much
@@Ben-vf5gk - the RTD era is full of stuff like that, yeah. Probably the most consistent and continuous the show's ever been. He just doesn't forget the small stuff, and it allows us to have episodes like Turn Left.
I honestly don't think Turn Left would work in any other era of the show, there's too many inconsistencies and contradictions.
I love it. Listened to the novelization. ☺️
Dr Who would have had series 3. It was commissioned before Tennant even made his first appearance
The Sucorax remind me of the Klingons. I wish they would come back. Only one ship was destroyed. I'm sure there are more of them out there somewhere.
I absolutely agree wholeheartedly Christmas Invasion five stars
Even and talk to who there's a fashion montage pants isn't uncomfortable with it considering I have seen it before on American Dad with an Alien named Rodger last name is Smith which is really weird considering David tens character doctor who goes by the name John Smith you got to watch the family of blood to understand that one I've seen it all of them actually
How many Christmas specials had real snow? Like 2?
Christmas in July? More like Christmas in June... nah doesn’t have the same ring

Hello first comment
The only way I could improve this episode is to have him only say "No second chances". Adding "I'm that sort of a man" just sounds very scripted and unnatural to me.
And later he gives a second change to Davros.
I love Tennant ... he was best doctor for me ... i'm rly sad when someone says Capaldi is best .-. :'(
Because Tennant is the least Doctorish.
Yo Woolie
The mahvel man himself
This is really my second least favourite Christmas special behind Widow and Wardrobe, despite 10 being my favourite Doctor
Actually I love Christmas Invasion it was one and still is one of my favorites but I do have a question why is it the doctor always comes up with either ions equal to have no idea what it means or he's always not liking something he's always complaining that is the TARDIS being round or it's not fair or blah blah blah blah blah blee blah blah blah go ahead and say anymore this is blah blah blah blah blah he's never happy never I've never once ever seen him happy and by him I mean the character any of those different Reincarnation of the doctor not 10 to 9 not 10:11 not 12. 13 not even all of the other doctors before them
The sycorax did appear again in the audios in an admittedly meh episode
Honestly? Harriet Jones, best PM we ever had
sycorax need to return
They have returned in Big Finish
I checked, and they're not too similar, but your intro tune always makes me think of SuperBunnyHop.
I'm not saying to change it or anything btw, I like it, and it's absolutely not plagiarism, just felt like saying it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
That convenient button, that makes that conveniently placed cliff, that the Sycorax leader was conveniently on top of, go off was stupid but yeah
The doctor ending Harriet’s political career leaves a bad taste my mouth, he could of said anything but saying she looks tired sounds very bad. I mean that that’s all the press ask her because she’s an older woman. I think it was cruel of him to be honest she made a mistake which she knows later in season 4 but anything else would of been better then shes tired.
Someone in Doctor Who: *Breathes*
Harbo Holmes: Perfect! It’s a masterpiece
I feel like the 10th doctor is the most liked because David does such a great job at showing all sorts of emotion as the character. I've never enjoyed a doctor more than Davids and probably never will. I mean Jodie just doesn't do it for me, she as the doctor is just awful and not enjoyable in the slightest
What about Tom Baker?
