Salute convention in London has invited me to bring a Pirate themed diorama to display at the convention. I decided to scratch build a scene using simple materials and tools - featuring the doom of a dwarf and the greatness of goblins.

Alex you are seriously one of the best tabletop gaming channels on TH-cam. each video is so personal, and it really feels like as a viewer we are there with you during the journey. this platform is very saturated with creators who put on a "mask" when they are presenting in their videos, and it feels hard to connect. but with your videos it feels like we are watching a close friend. they are always very informative and fun to watch. thank you for your interactions with your viewers through your livestreams and responding to comments and messages on instagram. YOU ROCK!
Yes, seconded!
This is a very heart warming comment AA and I truly appreciate it. Thank you 🙏
Well said. I “third” all of your comments. 😊
the choice between squig and kraken is a nightmare, but it looks great!! The subtle way the wood grain looks like ripples in the water is especially fun :-)
Thanks B 💜 In hindsight - I “repaired” some holes in the top end of the plinth with leftover epoxy putty to make sure the decoupage glue wouldn’t leak down the side of the plinth. But if I wouldn’t have done that, I’d probably have skipped the water effects altogether because just paint bring the wood grain was enough of a cool effect to leave as is.
I've just realised: 52 Miniatures is the Bob Ross of Tabletop Miniatures 🤯🎨
👋 🎨
Yes mate! See you there!
See you in the car! 💜
This video is so darn appealing I even loved the sponsor commercial. I’m always impressed how you create a memorable story in such a compact diorama. Well done Alex.
Thanks you as always Mark. I hope you are feeling better now
@@52Miniatures I’m Feeling great, thank you. I’m 3/4 of the way through one of my 2000 mile road trips. Come to the U.S. and I’ll teach you how to drive. Manual transmission of course. 😉
As charming as ever.
I would say, there is another reason for mixing colors: it creates something very unique. Of course, to replicate this for an entire army is almost impossible, when when you more stick to more individual miniatures or small squads, it's an excellent way to have colors that exist nowhere else.
I was waiting for a Squidmar joke, I must say ^^
Thanks Klug! Things indeed turn a little unique if one lets them.
A new 52 Miniatures video always makes for a good day! I really like how you've mixed lots of different approaches to this diorama to make this viable for all different types of hobbyists!
I’m glad that came across Bill, thank you 🙏
Love hearing you describe my favorite part of painting, experimenting and letting the paint job dictate therules as you go .very enjoyable content as always
What a wonderful piece, have to say I was watching for Oscar to charge across the bridge and hold you at sword point for the bottle!
Bit of a greatest hits, yellow armour - confident use of one of the difficult colours to paint, scratchbuild deck, rail and convincing hull planking and then paint it beautifully with reflected lights, sculpt tentacles from scratch - so easy when you know what you're doing and break it right down, make a sea surface with glue and a straw - what could be easier, edit two files into one perfect pirate - ummmm, totally new skill but look at the model, done!
So many of these elements come from lessons learned by making previous vids and I love that I've been here long enough to pick them out as vids and particular lessons.
The 52minis back catalogue is a real trove folks, no-one as relaxing to listen to when you're hobbying, and an absolute stack of hints, tips and lessons learned to keep.
I still remember the wet blending vid that unlocked it for me as a technique after so many failed tries, and made such a the difference to nearly every model I paint (Gamechanger on bases!)
Aye. Oscar was busy crossing the Atlantic in his own pirate ship (true story). Thank you humbly Phil!
@@52Miniatures Oscar is definitely living his best life!
This is the best painted wood I’ve ever seen
Thank you humbly Alice
I really like t your limited pallette to bring everything together.
A kraken- squig! Someone should make one pronto!
That's is fantastic! My favourite bit is the wood grain showing though the water effects. Just shows not everything needs to be perfect, and you can get a lovely effect by letting the imperfections show
Indeed. And not even imperfection perhaps, just appreciating what you have in front of you as something new and workable
As soon as I saw the thumb nail I thought it was fitting for the weekend's theme 😀!
Lovely job Alex. Hope to see you, and the diorama, there.
Thanks! You too!
Looks great Alex! The reflected lights on the hull, the tentacles, great job!
Thanks W!
my friend glad you did another Diorama and one with Gobbos.
Me too Matt! Unfortunately the video crashed… but I’m heading of to the TH-cam office with a squig onna stick to straighten things out
I love this diorama, what a fun way to use a goblin (and squig)!
Thanks D 🙏
It turned out just beautifully. Great color gradients, it all just looks great!
Thank you so much!
Congratulations on your win!
Such a fun diorama. I hope the dwarf has some friends in a submarine
Yet another masterpiece! Both the diorama and the video production.
Thank you humbly C 🙏
This turned out absolutely wonderful!
Thanks Luke !
Squig on a stick!
Looking forward to seeing this Saturday and hopefully saying hi!
Yay! Thanks Cabe
I realy like the way you used the wood grain to simulate rings of water. Mental note taken and filed.
🙌
That's the reason I like stormbringer. The magazine has given me the basics of stormcast , orks, goblins, slyventh , karadon overlords , ironjaws . So I've lost a lot of storm cast I never got to play with but I still have all these back ups
My money is on the dwarf. Another great video, Alex.
Hah! Backflip Michael!
That unfinished plinth did a great job of looking like ripples. Great use of your materials!
I read that as "nipples" initially and assumed that's the new way the youth say something is good. "New 52 miniatures TH-cam video? Total nipples..."
@@jamiem9490 Let's make it a thing!
Thanks man! It would have been even cooler without the ModPodge, just painted on water
This is so great! Your diorama videos are becoming one of my favourite parts of hobby TH-cam
Wow, thanks H!
Looking forward to seeing this at Salute.
Hope you got to see it!
What a wonderful little diorama! The quality of you videos is amazing. As always thank you for such great inspiration!
Thank you as always man 🙏
The Diorama turned out great, by the way. :D
Thanks!
Looking forward to seeing you and dis boi at Salute tomorrow, bubba!
You coming? Great stuff! Looking forward to it
Haha, killer work Alex! During that veneer bending part I was reminded of my previous veneer bending projects where I used a combination of water, alcohol and glycerin. The alcohol helped it dry a bit faster and, if I remember correctly, the glycerin helped soften it a bit more... Maybe it lubricated the fibers or something
Huh! That’s some fancy veneer bending right there. Thanks Marcus 🙏
I gotta be honest and say I didn't see the vision at the beginning but the end result is just amazing! and to think it started with a piece of laminate and block of wood. I love it! You're video storytelling is truly a joy to watch and learn from. thank you.
Thank you so much!
Beautiful work! If I see it on a train seat on my way to Salute from Stansted Airport, I'll keep it safe for you.
Good backup!
You really are phenomenal when it comes to creating in my opinion out of this world dioramas 😮
Fantastic work!! 😊
Thank you dearly Martyn
I really like the idea for this diorama! The story is very clear, funny ( goblins for me will always be more funny than dark) but also a bit serious ( dwarfs are more serious than goblins). I really like the composition and idea of using a straw to create ripples (I may use this technique someday). Goblin Fantasy pirates, this also sounds interesting!
I appreciate it Prz 🙌
Hope your dio survives the trip, great build!
I’m alive! Thanks :)
Thanks for another great video, I've slowly started dipping my toes in the water with regards to scenery/dioramas , ATM I'm painting Ork Boyz and deciding on what I want to print
Good luck!
Another beautiful video and miniature. Kudos Alex 👏🏻
At first I wasn't sure about your statement regarding goblins as natural pirates... but I can see it now. What a lovely little fellow. And purely by chance this nice set of wierd greenskins landet in my basket. Woops. A few euro less... what a shame. But so worth it.
I would love to see a whole ship - build and inhabited by goblins! Maybe I should unpack my drawing stuff and try myself as an illustrator again. I'm not quite comfortable enough in the diorama building and miniature painting realm to follow your really awesome footsteps here.
It’s a great set of minis! Would like to have added some more, but the simple is nice too. Maybe just start with something small and simple and start from there?
What a great piece! Amazing diorama!
Thank you very much!
Really appreciating your achievable (for the rest of us) painting philosophy. Oh, and I like that you found something useful to do with a GW model. Perhaps one day, I shall attain such heights.😁
Hah! Thanks D 🙏
Really beautifully crafted diorama!!! Love the hand crafting 😊😊😊
Thank you so much C 😊
@@52Miniatures you are very welcome 🤗
Really fun and dynamic result!
Your narration is incredible
I can't miss a single video. And the craft is amazing. You almost make it seem so easy 💚🥰 keep it up! Also comes to show that rule of fun and enjoying what you actually want to paint instead of the meta or whatever is winning tournaments trumps everything else
I humbly appreciate it Sapa
Now I wish I could have gone to Salute!
Would have been great!
Rather than Mod Podge for water, I prefer Fluid Acrylic Gloss Medium, which dries the same way and seals particularly nicely. It's also easy to tint with acrylic paint.
It reacts the same way as PVA/Mod Podge when you're putting it down.
And if you want bigger waves, get one of the gloss media with more structure (higher viscosity), like Soft Body or Heavy Body.
All available from your local art supply store.
Perhaps you're old enough to remember that good old GW, eons ago, made some pirate Orks, that went out of stock, and then quickly out of memories, it was the time of lead white metal, and the writings on the blisters "do not chew or swallow", I always wondered, "why should I chew or swallow my minis?"
Fill up the fillings that have fallen out? I do recall pirates… they tend to stick
Another amazing diorama. Great job.
Thank you very much!
Another fantastic video mate, the music gets me going everytime
Thank you L!
The best storytelling in the hobby by far!
💜 Thank you Ryan
It was great to see this in person and i think it was very successful as a kind of hobby demonstration piece. For some reason the water surface turning into wood is quite satisfying as well. Hope your trip goes well!
Thanks S! Glad you got to see it in person. And yes, I was hoping to do a bit more of a demonstration of what can be done with rather simple ingredients
Great video, every step looked like so much fun and approachable, from figuring out the curved wood pieces, to the tentical sculpting to the wet blend painting. The final result is stunning, I especially love all the water reflections on everything, going to make sure to take more time to experiment while painting my next project. Thanks for the video!
I’m glad that is how this came across, I was hoping it would. Thanks!
It’s a squig on a stick!!! Love this!
Best mini :)
I love your dioramas. The blue reflections on the ship was a fantastic touch!
Thank you very much!
very interesting tto see and hear how you work creating the look of your builds. I feel I learn something from every video.
Glad to hear it!
Great work as always Alex, I'll be sure to look out for the diorama on Saturday. I'll be working at the Warlord Games stand if you fancy swinging by to say hello!
Thanks W 👍 It was a busy day but I hope you found the time to check the cabinets
No not really, I did see you pass by my demo stand at Warlord Games but I was too busy to say hello. A pity. I hope you had a great time whilst you were there though!
Great looking diorama! 😊
Thank you very much!
Great content as ever!
Beautiful piece. You were spot-on about the value of a simple story in presentation, you made it happen. Good luck in your competition.
Clever idea using the rings in the wood as water ripples 👍
Lovely diorama, Alex
Thanks Mr boom!
Love it
very like this, so original
Thank you 🙏
Thanks!
Thank you Em! 💜
Great video as always love the journey, and as always I've added more to my to buy list while watching your videos lol. Keep the great work going your pushing me onwards.
Thank you Isin, I’m glad to hear it inspires you
Squigg...squid...squigd...makes me want to make a kraken with the face of a squigg :P
Have you heard of Lighting Mentor? His work focuses on “painting light” which is the inverse of what photographers and videographers do in “painting with light.” Your previous video, “Using Less Paints Will Make You A Better Painter,” which showcased how slight variations mixing your own colors can provide a much more unified, consistent paint job tonally and thematically. I thought that video was really exciting and motivating and, as part of my journey to paint my first miniature, resulted in me purchasing single pigment acrylics from the nearby university art store. Watching your video reminded me of Lighting Mentor’s “Power in the Grays” which demonstrates how using color relativity, a painter can create the sensation of there being a much larger palette in use. Slight changes to color hue, tone or temperature can make it feel as though an entire 216 pot set was used rather than the very small collection he began with. I just thought you would be interested in this.
I appreciate the recommendation, thank you 🙏
Very kool. 🎉
Thanks man!
Outstanding and inspiring. I hope you do not mind that I take some ideas from it.
That is why I’m here :) please do
My day is saved with a new 52 Miniatures video!🙂
I appreciate it Iron!
Ngl I liked the sound of a squig squid.
Belay, me hearties, tis further high quality and thoughtful 52 miniatures content in a piratical vein, with a restricted set of paints and materials to encourage those without the more expensive hobby tools (no power source for a 3d printer on ye galleon), yarrrr (or should that be waarrrghh)
Yahawaargh!
Awesome!! Just friggin AWESOME!!!
Thanks!!
oh hey, I just bought that gobbo mini for a project :D
Have fun! 👌
Well shiver me timbers, that Dwarf is not enjoying the craic.
I’ve now started wondering if the pirate dwarves are actually underground dwarves that have taken to sea piracy and thus have weird pirate vs miner swearing.
They would be the sort of Dwarves that dug the 'Channel Tunnel' digging, but under water.
I'm a simple man, I see a new 52 miniatures video and I click. I see a goblin diorama and I click faster. I see a pirate goblin video and I threaten the like button with Squigs til it turns blue.
That’s some fast clickin Erik!
Oh my, is Squarespace going to keelhaul your paint set! Have you thought of a less hostile sponsor?
Waitaminute! I think maybe you planted that bottle and staged the whole darn thing! 🤔
I swear I didn’t hide my kid in the bushes and asked him to chuck the bottle in the water…
@@52Miniatures LOL!
lovely diorama! i'm really into goblin pirats at the moment! have you checked out the Moonstone miniatures by Goblin King Games? they have some cool looking pirate goblins! i think you will like them!
Thanks M. I think I did but I’m not sure. So many minis out there!
Rad
I've recently started using Nivea Creme for kneadtite/milliput sculpting (after watching a Modern Synthesist video on the topic - th-cam.com/video/i_i_MIfbHs8/w-d-xo.html) and it's a really nice step in sculpting smoothness up from just using water, and doesn't require washing before painting like petroleum jelly does.
Great tip, thank you!
How do you know a pirate goblin has scurvy? They’re not orange. You’re welcome!
Hah!
Sorry but I'm a little confused. You appear to be suggesting a nasty little gobbo has somehow bettered a majestic Dwarf? Is this some kind of satire? :D great job tho, have fun at Salute - you'd probably be the only person I wanted to say Hi to, if I could be bothered going lol
Well thanks K. Salute was fun 🤩
Beautiful piece of work Alex.
So in July I will be hosting a RUSTBUCKETgb2024 collaboration.
If you look at my Playlist it shows what that is all about and I would be honored if you join. I'm sure you will come up with something amazing.
Till next time.
Thanks Mars! I appreciate the invite but I'm afraid my video schedule stretches quite far ahead.
